Send us a textThe moment I pressed play on Season 3, Episode 10 of Knots Landing, "Three Sisters," I knew something felt different. Five minutes in, it clicked—this wasn't just another drama-filled installment of our favorite primetime soap. This was Knots Landing's bold venture into the supernatural. What begins as a simple road trip transforms into something extraordinary when Laura, Karen, Valene, Lily Mae, Abby, and Ginger arrive at a secluded mansion 100 miles from home. Laura's there on business, tasked with selling the estate, while the others tag along for what they believe will be a pleasant overnight getaway. But from the first unsettling camera angles and mysterious gusts of wind, it's clear this house holds dark secrets. The genius of this episode lies in how it uses paranormal elements to explore profound character truths. Through Abby's research, we learn the mansion's tragic history—three young sisters whose mother was murdered by their father, left abandoned for months before being raised by a governess, never truly growing up as they remained in the house their entire lives. As strange occurrences multiply—windows that freeze to the touch, doors that lock from nowhere, eerie music boxes playing on their own—it's Valene who forms the deepest connection with the ghostly presence. Joan Van Ark delivers a mesmerizing performance as Valene's maternal void (having lost her daughter Lucy years earlier) makes her uniquely receptive to the ghostly children. Her trance-like state and eventual journey to the roof, where she nearly sacrifices herself to "join" the children, creates one of the series' most intense emotional climaxes. It's Lily Mae who ultimately saves her daughter, speaking directly to the spirits and breaking their hold. The final reveal—a Polaroid showing three ghostly girls standing behind Valene—provides the perfect conclusion to this anomalous yet thoroughly satisfying episode. "Three Sisters" stands as bold evidence that even the most grounded dramas can successfully venture into unexpected territory when they remain true to their emotional core. Ready to experience this haunting side of Knots Landing? Grab something bubbly, keep the lights on, and join me for an unforgettable journey into the supernatural edges of 80s television drama. When you're done, share your thoughts—did this paranormal detour surprise you as much as it did me?

Joe Szimhart has worked with more than a thousand people to help them leave cults. Through his experience being in and leaving a cult, he has focused on interventions to free others. During today's episode, Joe helps us understand why someone might join a cult, how money impacts them, and what happens when one decides to leave a cult. He also touches on the physiological aspects of what people must deal with when leaving and what some unsuccessful interventions have looked like. Tune in today to learn more about his work and signs of someone's unhealthy relationship with a group.    IN THIS EPISODE   [1:15] What is a cult? [3:12] Joe shares an example of a case he has been involved in. [7:31] What happens when someone decides to leave a cult?  [9:40] What draws people into cults?  [13:33] How does money attract people or maintain a connection to the systems?  [18:54] How long was Joe participating in a cult himself?   [22:55] Joe talks about the people he has helped in various ways. [24:46] What hasJoe learned from times he wasn't successful in helping someone leave a cult?   KEY TAKEAWAYS   People invest so much of themselves into a cult that it can cause big physiological traps for individuals when they want to leave.  Not all cults are the same in terms of money. For some, money is hidden away, and members are sought for their financial wealth. Other cults don't require members to have money and it's not a factor in getting or staying involved. To leave a cult, an intervention must show the person that they can reinstitute a sense of choice and show them the potential of carrying on their life outside of the cult they are involved with.    RESOURCES:   Beyond the Balance Sheet Website   Joseph Szimhart's Website   Books:   Brain Washing: The Science of Thought Control   How to Think about Weird Things   BIO: Joseph Szimhart has been a Cult Intervention Specialist and media consultant about cults since the early 1980s when he began helping families and individuals impacted by harmful cult behavior. He has a degree in Arts and Sciences from the University of Dayton in Ohio and a Certificate in Painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He is currently employed as a crisis caseworker at a psychiatric emergency hospital in Pennsylvania. His cult experience with several Theosophy-based cults from 1978 to 1980 drew him into cultic studies. He has presented papers many times at conferences, including with the Association of Sociology of Religion and the International Cultic Studies Association. As a media consultant, he provided the story for A Mother's Deception starring Joan Van Ark (1994), and his intervention work was the subject of the feature article “New Age Exorcist” in DETAILs Magazine (Sept. 1991). The International Cultic Studies Association presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He maintains an art studio at his home in Stowe, PA. His first novel Mushroom Satori: The Cult Diary, was published through Aperture Press in 2013. His memoir, “Santa Fe, Bill Tate, and me: How an artist became a cult interventionist,” was released in 2020.

Donna Mills steps Behind The Rope. One of the most recognized names in Nighttime Soaps, 80s Icon, Donna Mills. Donna is best known for her role as the scheming, manipulative vixen Abby Cunningham, or Abby Fairgate Cunningham Ewing Sumner to be exact, on Knots Landing, one of the longest running prime time soap operas in history. We are thrilled to have Donna here today to chat about her career, and life for that matter, in its entirety. We reminisce about all the glory that was, is, and will always be Abby Cunningham and Knot's Landing including how Donna was cast, co-stars and real life best friends Joan Van Ark and Michelle Lee, the other recognizable faces that popped by the worlds most famous cul-de-sac such as Nicolette Sheridan and Alec Baldwin, and her decision to leave the show way before the world was done with Queen Abby. Moving on from Knots, Donna opens up about the evolution of women in Hollywood from the 1980s when shows like Knots were all the rage to present day, answering questions like how far have we come and how much farther do we have to go. We also chatted with Donna about some of our other favorite shows she has appeared on like Melrose Place, Nip/Tuck, and last, but not least, RuPaul's Drag U (yes we think Mama Ru is a Knots fan!). Of course we had to chat with Donna about her thoughts on Reality TV and actresses like Lisa Rinna who have become Housewives throughout the years. Yes, Donna does know Rinna. Having posed for Playboy herself, Donna chats and shares stories from her illustrious frothy year career about the pressures of aging in Hollywood, the ever presence of plastic surgery amongst The Hollywood Elite, and the #MeToo Movement. Finally we chat with Donna about the current crop of television she has been binging, the current crop of “A List” actresses she puts her stamp of approval on and with reboots running rampant chat, hoping to will into existence, a Knot's Landing Reboot. Ahh, a girl can dream, can't she. And this time out on Earth Destruction Directive, that's not just a general statement, as we take a look at 1979's The Last Dinosaur, starring Richard Boone, Joan Van Ark, and one really big, really mean Tyrannosaurus Rex! "We" is also not just a general statement either, as I am joined by my good friend (and part time Massai tracker) Dr. Bill Robinson as we take a look at this... I hate to say "classic," so let's call it "vintage" US/Japan co-production made famous from it's days on the airwaves as a TV movie. It's got a pantomime triceratops, a crocheted purse, ad libbed technology which would make The Professor from Gilligan's Island blush, and subtext which laughs at the word "subtle." It's one of a breed they just don't make anymore, so download and give it a listen! Be sure to stick around after the outro for the BUNTA SUPERCUT!Feedback for this show can be sent to: earthdestructiondirective@yahoo.comEarth Destruction Directive can be found on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/#!/earthdestruction.directive Please rate and review the show on iTunes! Slip this one in the "better late than never" slot:  earlier in the spring, the glorious actress JOAN VAN ARK returned to the proverbial scene of the crime when she briefly reprised her most iconic and most beloved television role:  that of ever-agitated Valene Ewing on TNT's vaunted reboot of the classic prime-time soap Dallas.  Van Ark was my seventh guest all the way back in this show's nascent early days, and I was thrilled to welcome her back to Brandon's Buzz for a sneak preview of the action, and though a series of crazy events in my life prevented me from getting this interview edited and assembled prior to the aforementioned Dallas episode's premiere, I suspect you'll still enjoy hearing Joan's invaluable insights about reuniting with her television family, about honoring the memory and incredible legacy of the peerless Larry Hagman, and about how it felt to slip back into poor Val's shoes some thirty years after she first donned them.

She has earned six nominations and won two Soap Opera Digest Awards for Best Actress. She also appeared for a season on CBS's The Young and the Restless creating the role of Gloria Fisher.  Prior to her role on Knots Landing, van Ark was also a series regular on the TV sitcoms, Temperatures Rising and We've Got Each Other.  As a director, she was nominated for the prestigious Humanitas Award for an ABC Afterschool Special in which she also co-starred.
