55 years ago today, the movie ‘Downhill Racer' came out, and it starred two legendary actors, Robert Redford and Gene Hackman. The film critic Roger Ebert calls this “the greatest sports movie ever made,” and today, Jonathan discusses ‘Downhill Racer' with one of the greatest American downhillers of all time, Daron Rahlves. Now normally, our advice is that you should watch the film before listening to our conversation about it, but in the case of ‘Downhill Racer,' we think that listening to our conversation first might help you appreciate the film even more, and see why Daron Rahlves & Roger Ebert both love it so much.RELATED LINKSGet Yourself Covered: BLISTER+Get Our Winter Buyer's GuideTOPICS & TIMES:Film Overview (5:32)Robert Redford (11:30)How Race Courses & Ski Racing Have Changed (16:28)Memorabilia, Romance, & Heartbreak (31:25)Gene Hackman (38:02)Most Rewatchable Scenes (44:04)Hahnenkamm Downhill (49:08)Last Scene (57:07)Best Lines (1:03:05)Hottest Take Award (1:13:28)Should the Film Be Remade? Here's Julie's list of favorite sports movies. A League of Their Own This is a Satellite Sister Solid Gold choice. This movie has everything: sisters, baseball, Geena Davis, Rosie O”Donnell, Madonna in center field, and Tom Hanks telling the players,” there's no crying in baseball”. Bend It Like Beckham A wonderful coming of age/cultural assimilation/girl power story about Jess Bijam who wants to play soccer like her idol, David Beckham but struggles to respect her traditional Indian family values. And, hello, Keira Knightley plays Jess's friend and David Beckham makes a cute cameo. Bull Durham It's hard to pick my favorite baseball movie but the kitchen scene with Susan Sarandon and Kevin Costner makes Bull Durham my top pick. The movie is about baseball in a very deep way but also has breezy romantic comedy.  Rocky I loved the original Rocky. It's the ultimate underdog movie and has one of the best theme songs ever. Also, Talia Shire shines in the film.  Hoop Dreams An excellent documentary following two young Chicago basketball prospects trying to use their athletic talents to get to a better life. The two stars face racism, poverty, injury and other roadblocks trying to make their dreams come true. The film left me in tears.  Friday Night Lights Watch the original movie with clear eyes and a full heart. Before there was Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor, there was Billy Bob Thornton and Tim McGraw in a film that follows the coach and players of a high school football team in Odessa, Texas. As a transplant, I am beginning to appreciate what Friday night football means to Texas communities. The film is as much about Texas culture as it is about football.  Bad News Bears Haven't we all been on a team for work or play where you feel like a group of misfits or outcasts? This is a movie about kids who never expect to care about competing or winning. Tatum O'Neal is the 11-year old star pitcher. Walter Matthau as an alcoholic ex-baseball pitcher turned coach is perfect. The ending involves a championship game and a big celebration for the Bears.   Liz's sport movie faves include Robert Redford in Downhill Racer and Bill Murray in Caddyshack! Plus Without Limits, a great T&F movie with Billy Crudup as Steve Prefontaine and Donald Sutherland as Coach Bill Bowerman Lian names the great cycling flick Breaking Away and The Cutting Edge, a skating rom-com that does the sport proud. This week, I'm honored to be joined by not one but two brilliant screenwriters, Larry Karaszewski & Daniel Waters. Larry Karaszewski & his writing/directing/producing partner Scott Alexander are best known for writing unusual true stories such as the films ED WOOD, THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, MAN ON THE MOON, AUTO FOCUS, BIG EYES, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, & the hit television miniseries THE PEOPLE VS. OJ SIMPSON: AMERICAN CRIME STORY. The team has won Emmys, Golden Globes, Producers, & Writers Guild Awards. Additionally, Larry is also a former Governor & Vice President of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences. Born in Ohio & raised in Indiana, Daniel Waters is the Edgar award-winning screenwriter of the 1988 cult classic HEATHERS starring Winona Ryder & Christian Slater. Additionally, the man who wrote or co-wrote the films BATMAN RETURNS, HUDSON HAWK, THE ADVENTURES OF FORD FAIRLANE, DEMOLITION MAN, & more, he's also the writer-director of HAPPY CAMPERS & SEX & DEATH 101.Dear friends & movie buddies since their teenage years in Indiana, in this witty & well-researched ninety-minute conversation, the two champion the incredible '70s run of filmmaker Michael Ritchie. Focusing on Ritchie's view of America in the films DOWNHILL RACER, PRIME CUT, THE CANDIDATE, SMILE, THE BAD NEWS BEARS, & SEMI-TOUGH, before his wildly uneven '80s era, this episode is a must for '70s film fans. #344 - Robert Plomin - Psychologist & Geneticist - What if your DNA could predict your future?

Ever wondered what it's like to live another person's life but keep your own mind? What makes us so uniquely different? My guest today, psychologist and geneticist Robert Plomin, argues that it's largely due to a 1% difference in our DNA. Research Professor in Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King's College London for 13 years, Robert grew up in a household with “no books” in Chicago, but still excelled at school. It's in the 1970s, at the University of Texas at Austin that he falls in awe with behavioral genetics while studying psychology. Since then, his work - in great part based on twin studies - has highlighted how both genetic and environmental factors are crucial, but it's their interaction that's most determinant. That's why he comes to a fascinating and exciting conclusion: knowing everything about our DNA and our futures could improve our societies. By unlocking the secrets of our DNA, we have the power to tailor our environments for optimal health and happiness, ditching the one-size-fits-all "golden yardstick" that Robert so vehemently rejects. In this episode, you'll learn about: The relationship between psychology and genetics; Austin, Texas in the 70s; Why dreaming about becoming an F1 champion wasn't enough for him to become one; The ethics of genetics and how to handle it in responsibly; Why your children should get to do what they love, whatever you think; How your perception of things is actually a controlled hallucination. Big up to Antoine Freysz for suggesting I meet Robert! This year, she's decided to return to downhill world cup and settle up some unfinished business.  Emily talks about what mountain biking and mountain bikes were like in the early days of the sport, how her career has progressed and what she's learned about riding, racing and herself along the way. She also talks about training and racing as an athlete in her forties, how YouTube has made access to information on race craft much more accessible, and how she's been working to get ready for the challenges of the modern Downhill World Series, where racers tackle some of the most technical tracks on record, reaching incredible speeds.

I personally have a huge history in downhill racing, so chatting about downhill riding got me super stoked. Kailey is not only a rad rider, but she also uses Dialed Health programming for her strength training workouts and that's how we got connected. The conversation begins with us chatting about this huge road gap she hit out in Utah, which to be honest, you rarely see anyone do these types of gaps, let alone a woman. Super impressive. This led us to sharing a bunch of tips on hitting gaps and tabletops, which can also be appleid to any type of jump you're hitting. Then we dive into Kailey's riding, how she accelerated so quickly (only riding for less than 2 years), her training on and off the bike, what PSI she recommends for downhill riding, her favorite bike park, her go-to trail snacks, and a bunch of cool golden nuggets you don't want to miss. At the end of the episode, we dive into Weekly Thoughts with Derek where I chat more about my New Years day Everest. I break down the things that didn't go right and how I made it through mentally because it was the most mentally tough day I've ever had on my bike. And lastly, we get into listener questions where I answer “Should you weigh food before or after it's cooked”  05:00 - Kailey's hot tips for hitting tabletops and gaps 18:00 - How Kailey picked up momentum quickly once entering into downhill riding 22:00 - Recommend PSI for downhill riding  28:00 - Winning National Champions 35:00 - Inside look into Kailee's Riding 1:08 - Listener questions 1:20 - Weekly Thoughts With Derek 1:30 - AnnouncementsGet more content from me daily by following me on the ‘gram: @dialedhealth. Acute Kidney Injury makes a greater contribution to early mortality than acute myocardial infarction and it's been argued we should consider the concept of “kidney attack” to give it the weight that it deserves. But the presentation of kidney injury isn't as overt or timely as a heart attack often is. While serum creatinine is a pretty good reporter of chronic impairment in kidney function it's very insensitive to acute injury, so for two decades there's been a concerted search for more proximal biomarkers of AKI. The three most promising candidates are neutrophil gelatinase‐associated lipocalin (NGAL), tissue inhibitor of metallo-proteinase 2 (TIMP-2) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-7 (IGBFP-7). Commercial assays for these exist that can predict moderate to severe AKI with a lead time of many hours in at-risk patients. But many questions remains as whether these are specific enough to be useful at point of care whether we have the interventions to respond to the information they provide, and what ‘false positives' might indicate.Guest  Professor Rinaldo Bellomo AO FRACP FCICM FAHMS (Director of Research Intensive Care, Austin Hospital; University of Melbourne; Monash University). author of “Novel renal biomarkers of acute kidney injury and their implications” (2021) Internal Medicine Journal 51;3 pp316-318ProductionWritten and produced by Mic Cavazzini DPhil. Howdy listeners! For Episode 3 I thought it would be fun to have a quick chat with a young aspiring gravity racer. Walter Blackman first and foremost is from Iowa, not a region known for its downhill prowess, but Walter is out to change that. With the chips stacked against him he's making the most out of every opportunity he gets to ride and race. I got to know Walter on a trip he took out to Colorado, here on my local trails as a 13 year old he was hitting lines I had never seen before, but what really got my attention was the playful nature he took to the trail. It was a pleasure to catch up with Walter, and talk about his inspirations, who he looks up to, and what goals and aspirations he has. Walter has quite the level head on him for just turning 16. It was fun to talk mountain bike tech as he had some pretty good pre race tips, his thoughts on the future of mountain biking and his dream of one day competing at the world cup level. I hope you all enjoy this interview with Walter Blackman, sit back and relax, this is Ride On Ramblings! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/brian-buell/message

The downhill momentum of inertia and prior woundedness in people begins early but seems to pick up speed the older you get. In other words, the more time elapses since an early rejection or early hurt was sustained, the more impact it seems to have on you as you age. I keep seeing contemporaries of mine, most of them in fact, in whom what was an idiosyncrasy or "slight defect" in youth or early adulthood becomes more pronounced, and finally, quite alienating. This goes for addiction and over-eating and personal hygiene, but also includes resentments, bitterness, unforgiveness, and obsession. At this point in my observation, I would almost say that a person's temperamental negatives uniformly get bigger and more gross with the passage of time. Barring, that is, the intervention of a forgiving, absolving love that takes the person as he or she is. The result of a sincerely merciful intervention, so counter-intuitive in relation to the world's judgement but so luminously true in the Christian Gospel, is a radical volte-face that we call New Birth and New Creation, or simply hope. In the cast, I reference Led Zeppelin II, that inspired astonishment of an LP from the late 1960s; the relationship of 'Pip' and 'Magwitch' in Great Expectations; and some recent situations that cry out for interruptive mercy. Note, too, the brilliant launch of Tullian and Stacie Tchividjian's new church in Florida. That church is what it's all about! "Downhill Racer" is dedicated to David V.

Passions and tensions were high as a citizen-group of commercial fishermen, sport fishermen and environmentalist traveled around the state seeking public opinion on fishery policy. After 10+ town halls, the group -- often at odds -- drafted recommendations ultimately used by legislators in the Fisheries Reform Act of 1997. In this episode, we learn just how personal the political was to the citizens who helped craft the FRA. Thank you for listening to this special series of Lo & Behold: The Fisheries Reform Act, a podcast by Bit & Grain. This series was made possible by the NC Sea Grant Community Collaborative Research Grant Program. Collaborators included Jimmy Johnson of the Albemarle-Pamlico National Estuary Partnership, oral historian and archivist Mary Williford, Barbara J. Garrity-Blake of Duke University Marine Lab, Karen Amspacher of Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center, Sandra Davidson, Baxter Miller, and Ryan Stancil of Bit & Grain, and journalist Susan West. Featuring Discovery Harbor, Stilt, The Summit and Downhill Racer by Blue Dot Sessions The story is told using excerpts from oral history interviews. The interviews, transcripts, and a discussion guide suitable for use in classrooms and public forums are available at https://www.raisingthestory.com/nc-fisheries-reform-act-an-oral-history-perspective/

Aaron Gwin needs no introduction. He's one of the greatest downhill mountain bike racers of all time and he's in the prime of his career. I sat down with Aaron at his home in Murrieta, California, and we discussed things from diet and training, his shelf-life as a downhill racer, his desire to motivate and inspire kids and even a love he has for singing. I hope you enjoy this episode with a truly world-class athlete. If you like our podcasts, don't forget to rate us on iTunes and spread the word about them to your fellow mountain bikers.

Welcome to Vital MTB's The Inside line, a podcast about the personalities in our great sport of mountain biking. We're excited to kick things off with an episode featuring American downhill racer, Eliot Jackson. On December 1st, we met up with Eliot in a quiet, distraction-free house near Santa Barbara, California. He was staying there to focus on training for the 2017 World Cup season. I learned that Eliot happens to be a podcast fan and to my surprise really loves road riding. We discuss growing up racing motocross at a near-professional level with the likes of Ryan Villopoto, how he dropped out of full-time school in 7th grade to pursue racing, the fact he considers himself a nerd who loves reading, problem solving and statistics, his transition from the Pivot Cycles World Cup DH team to Giant Factory Racing for 2017 and just what makes calculated crusher tick. We hope you enjoy getting to know Eliot through this interview as much as we did.

Mark and Aaron celebrate the Summer Olympics by exploring Downhill Racer, an independent film about the Winter Olympics. We draw parallels to what is portrayed in the Michael Ritchie with the actual sporting events that take place today, including the thrills of victory and the agony of defeat. We discuss the groundbreaking cinematography, the nature of winning in an individual sport and the the enduring legacy of Sundance that began with this film. About the film: Astonishing Alpine location photography and a young Robert Redford in one of his earliest starring roles are just two of the visual splendors of Downhill Racer, the visceral debut feature of Michael Ritchie. In a beautifully understated performance, Redford is David Chappellet, a ruthlessly ambitious skier competing for Olympic gold with an underdog American team in Europe, and Gene Hackman provides tough support as the coach who tries to temper the upstart's narcissistic drive for glory. With a subtle screenplay by acclaimed novelist James Salter, Downhill Racer is a vivid character portrait buoyed by breathtakingly fast and furious imagery that brings the viewer directly into the mind of the competitor. The fifth of a ten part series looking at the aftermath of the Pulse shooting in Orlando, solely through the voices of members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Following the shooting, I began seeing members of the community openly worrying on social media, understandably for their lives, but also about the packaging of the attack both by major news outlets and elected officials. It seemed like coverage of the shooting was overwhelmingly formatted as cisgender, heterosexual people talking about members of the queer and Latinx community rather than talking to them. After frustrating hours of fruitlessly searching for perspective from the actual communities affected, I remembered that, in this modern world, I didn't have to wait for any other outlet to have these conversations for me; I could do it myself. As I started thinking about the project, something else became painfully obvious to me: I couldn't wrap my head around the weight of 49 lives lost. I heard about a news anchor reading all 49 names on air, and was surprised to hear that this simple act took seven minutes. That number, 49, by itself, can feel small. 49 cents, 49 seconds. I wanted to understand the enormity, the massive loss of life, by talking to 49 people who identify within the LGBTQIA+ community, to understand that weight. The interviews here are presented chronologically by recording date. I spoke with the interviewees for this episode on June 16, just four days after the attack, and where they’ve given permission, I’ve included their Twitter handles: 21. George Winter @George_HWO 22. Case Files will be a series of interviews with the actors, writers, producers, directors and stunt people who made our two bionic shows possible in the 70s.  First up is an interview with actor/writer James McMullan (SMDM: "The Thunderbird Connection" and BW: "Kill Oscar 3" & "The Martians Are Coming, The Martians Are Coming") Comment on the episode here or write abionicpodcast@gmail.com or call 888-866-9010 or better still use the "Send Voicemail" tab on the left of the page to leave a message via your computer.  Take a moment to rate the episode by using our star system at the bottom of this entry. Growing up in Long Beach, Long Island, NY during the 1950's was a magical time for Jim McMullan. His fondest memories revolved around his friends, sports and making things. He was always creating something, inventing something, building something. That explains why he went off to college to learn more about art, design and architecture. He studied Industrial Design at New York University and Parsons School of Design for a year before enrolling in Kansas University's School of Architecture. For five years he involved himself in the arts: design, sculpture, art history and even theatre. After a girlfriend coaxed him into playing the lead in a college production of "Desire Under The Elms" by Eugene O'Neill, he spent much of his free time learning the craft of acting. Jim graduated from the University of Kansas in 1961 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. On a whim he went to Hollywood in 1961 to visit a friend and, through a chance meeting with playwright William Inge, he was given a screen test for Sam Peckinpah's Ride the High Country (1962) (Peckinpah directed the screen test). The test was sent to Universal Pictures, which put him under a seven-year contract, the start of a successful 40-year film career. During his four-year stay at Universal he made many TV pilots and starred opposite James Stewart as his son in the classic Shenandoah (1965). After leaving Universal he was given the co-lead for eight weeks opposite Vince Edwards in the series "Ben Casey" (1961). Jim has had the lead in a few series, such as "Chopper One" (1974), "Beyond Westworld" (1980), "The Young and the Restless" (1973) and most notably had a recurring role on the popular nighttime soap "Dallas" (1978) as Sen. Dowling, a part that lasted for 18 weeks. In 1970 he co-starred with Robert Redford and Gene Hackman in "Downhill Racer" (1969). Jim has been a respected and highly recognizable actor for the past 40 years and has appeared in hundreds of TV series, movies and commercials. His many feature film credits include "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" (1981) and "Extreme Close-Up" (1973). He has guest-starred in over 150 TV shows including "MacGyver" (1985), "Doogie Howser, M.D." (1989), "The Six Million Dollar Man" (1974), "The F.B.I." (1965), "The Rockford Files" (1974), "Hart to Hart" (1979), "The A-Team" (1983), "9 to 5" (1986), "Stowaway to the Moon" (1975) (TV), "Father Knows Best: Home for Christmas" (1977) (TV), "Centennial" (1978) and "The Taking of Flight 847: The Uli Derickson Story" (1988) (TV).   A few years ago Jim's career expanded into book writing. Since then he has published nine books… Actors as Artists, Musicians As Artists, This Face You Got, Instant Zen, Happily Ever After, Hail To The Chief, Cheatin’Hearts, Broken Dreams & Stompted on Love, Do it Now Book & Clock and Flocks, Herds, Litters & Schools.   In 2002, Jim returned from France after playing the role of Buffalo Bill for four years (1998-2002) in the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show", a 1000-seat dinner theater production, just outside of Disneyland Paris.  - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaJ599XK6Jo   He and his wife Helene have been married 40 years. She is a Life Coach and Jewelry Artist. They have two sons who live in California. Sky is an advertising agency producer and Tysun is a filmmaker/editor.  Jim & Helene  split their time between their cabin in the Sequoia National Forest, near their boys, and a small town on the New Jersey shore where they sail  & meditate. They recently completed a 4,000-mile, nine-month sailing adventure, from New Jersey to Key West, Florida, and back.
