Layoffs were a key trend in 2023 particularly for the tech sector, and it looks like this has continued into 2024. Tech industry tracker Layoffs.fyi estimates more than 30,000 employees have been let go this year so far, and while that is a far cry from the nearly 90,000 laid off in January 2023, getting layoffed is never pleasant news.A key theme that has come up with these layoffs, is how they were conducted, whether it was Google last year or more recently Lazada, so today on Resource Centre, we get into how the firing or layoff process should look like, especially for smaller companies, with Anisha Sasheendran, Founder and Managing Partner at One People Team - a HR advisory and training company.Among other things, we'll ask Anisha what should go into these conversations between an employer and an employee, whether there is such a thing as a human or ethical layoffs and if so, what it should look like, and challenges businesses typically face with talent management and retention.

Suzanne debunks commonly held beliefs about poverty and the "thrifty gene" and explores the opportunities for creating a better future through re-learning, knowledge-sharing, consulting with those who hold cultural and ceremonial knowledge, and taking care of marginalized people. She emphasizes the importance of sharing stories and seeing to address the challenges faced by Indigenous communities. Suzanne's extensive experience in advocacy and direct-service positions at Indigenous-led organizations, including the Native Women's Resource Centre of Toronto, the Anishinabek Nation (Health and Environment Program), the YWCA Elm Centre, and West Neighbourhood House, underscores her commitment to serving community members healing from intergenerational trauma and reclaiming culture while facing racism, poverty, homelessness, health issues, addictions, mental-health challenges, crime, and victimization. Find Suzanne Methot at:Website: www.suzannemethot.caFacebook: @SuzanneMethotAuthorLinkedIn: @SuzanneMethotYouTube: @SuzanneMethotBook: Legacy: Trauma, Story, and Indigenous Healing - https://a.co/d/enJ9v78 Discussed on the PODCAST:Book – Trauma and Recovery, Judith Lewis Herman - https://a.co/d/7GiHoVhAnishnawbe Health Toronto – www.aht.caMaslow's Hierarchy of Needs - https://simplypsychology.org/maslow.htmlTurtle Island Creation - http://bit.ly/3FSUSIZBook – The Prophecy of the Seven Fires of the Anishinaabe - https://caid.ca/SevFir013108.pdfSally Gaikezheyongai - https://vtape.org/video?vi=5664Aboriginals Healing Foundations List - Intergeneration Impacts - https://bit.ly/3FVpCZD Learn More:Ready to launch your career as a certified Metabolic Nutrition & Detox Coach? From the people searching on the frontlines, to those who hold Canadians to account and the women who know the solutions, we find power and place amidst the national crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2Spirit people. Winnipeg's North Point Douglas Women's Resource Centre is the home of the Mama Bear Clan. The volunteer patrol walks three times a week in this neighbourhood, the poorest in Winnipeg and where many of the city's most vulnerable have few places to get warm and even fewer places to get food. Walkers like Gina Smoke, Mitch Bourbonnaire and Morgan Fontaine hand out food, winter gear and plenty of love while searching for the missing. There are roughly 1,200 missing or murdered Indigenous women in Canada, although the true number is thought to exceed 4,000. In 2016, Canada launched a national inquiry into the crisis and heard from three thousand family members, survivors of violence, experts and Knowledge Keepers. Its final report — Reclaiming Power and Place — lists 231 calls for justice. Karine Duhamel knows the report well. As the director of research for the National Inquiry which lasted nearly three years, she co-wrote it. Women like Bernadette Smith and Lorelei Williams have been on the ground in their communities, organizing, marching and educating. But our sisters and relatives keep disappearing. So what is it going to take to finally bring this crisis to an end? Bernadette Smith is the co-founder of the Coalition of Families of Missing and Murdered Women in Manitoba, Drag the Red Initiative and No Stone Unturned, and she is an MLA in the Manitoba legislature. Lorelei Williams is the founder of the Vancouver-based dance group Butterflies in Spirit and member of the Skatin and Sts'ailes First Nations.

This episode explores the capacity for communities to hold companies accountable when their rights are violated by transition mineral mining. Helen Rosenbaum from the Deep Sea Mining Campaign and Manson Gwanyanya, Researcher & Representative for Southern & Anglophone West Africa at the Resource Centre, discuss how examples from the Ok Tedi mine in Papua New Guinea and the Konkola Copper Mine in Zambia prove the devastating environmental and human rights resulting from insufficient access to remedy. Content note: this episode addresses gender-based violence and femicide. On September 22, 2015, Carol Culleton, Anastasia Kuzyk and Nathalie Warmerdam were murdered by their former partner in Renfrew County, Ontario. Three lives were taken on one day. And friends, family, and neighbours were left grappling with the pain of it. On June 28, 2022, a jury at the inquest into these women's deaths recommended that the province declare intimate partner violence an epidemic. And with the help of grant from the Canadian Women's Foundation, End Violence Against Women (EVA) Renfrew County was able to work with legal experts and hold community consultations to make sure the voices of people in the County were included in the inquest. This is a stunning example of systemic change work that happens with grants from Canadian Women's Foundation, all due to generous donors and partners who give toward gender justice. Feminist lawyer Pamela Cross joins us, a well-known and respected expert on violence against women and the law for her work as a researcher, writer, educator and trainer. She works with women's equality and violence against women organizations across Ontario. One of her key roles is as the Legal Director of Luke's Place Support and Resource Centre in Durham Region, where she leads the organization's provincial projects, including research, training and advocacy. Pamela has also been a member of the teaching faculty with the National Judicial Institute, and continues to plan and deliver educational programs on violence against women to Canadian judges. Pamela is the 2020 recipient of the Corry Award from Queen's Law, the 2019 recipient of the Laura Legge Award from the Law Society of Ontario and a 2015 recipient of the Attorney General's Victim Services Award of Distinction for her work on the issue of violence against women. In 2006, she was awarded the YWCA Toronto Women of Distinction award for her work in the area of law reform. She is a frequent speaker at provincial, national and international conferences. She is also a regular commentator on violence against women and the law for print media, radio and television across Canada. EA - Launching the EA Groups Resource Centre by BrianTan

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Launching the EA Groups Resource Centre, published by BrianTan on January 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. CEA has launched the EA Groups Resource Centre - a website with curated resources on how people can start and run a successful effective altruism group. Whether you're starting or running a city, university, or other type of EA group, we think you can find resources that can help you in the Resource Centre. Check it out now at resources.eagroups.org! Marisa Jurczyk, Jessica McCurdy, Catherine Low, and I, with the help of some volunteers, have transferred over the resources for group organisers that were originally on the EA Hub. (The list of all EA groups is still on the EA Hub though.) We've also condensed and updated some of the pages, as well as added new pages to the Resource Centre. The goal is for this website to be an easy-to-search and living database of resources for group organisers, with specific guides on some frequently requested topics. We think it's an improvement on the website before, but we still plan to add more content and consolidate more resources here. For the time being, we still think it's the best place to go to search for helpful guides or resources related to topics you're facing. Updated resources on the Resource Centre In particular, we are excited about updated resources on: Funding for groups Getting EA books for your members Creating a strategy Running fellowships & multi-week programs (with sample curriculums) Why and how to do one-on-ones Why did we transfer out of the EA Hub? The EA Hub is adopting a narrower focus that doesn't include maintaining group organiser resources. It also wasn't as easy to edit or add new resources there, so we moved to this new site. We have set up redirects from all the old EA Hub group resource pages to point to the Resource Centre, so all of the original EA Hub links should still take you to similar resources. The navigation of the Resource Centre is slightly different but should still be intuitive. Feedback is welcome The site has a couple of minor issues, but there may be others we are not aware of yet, so feel free to point them out. We will be improving the Resource Centre in the coming months, and we'll announce in the EA Groups Newsletter when there are new or updated pages. (We hope to make it even more easily accessible and less overwhelming.) If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about the website, including resources you want us to add or create, feel free to submit them in this form. You can also comment feedback below or email them to me at brian.tan@centreforeffectivealtruism.org. If group organisers have any work-in-progress resources, or want to write new ones for the Resource Centre, I can take a look and give feedback on those too. I can also anonymize resources if needed before sharing with others. Thanks! We'd like to thank the following people for their help in launching the Resource Centre: Kirsten Angeles, Jenna Ong, Sanat Singhal, Richard Annilo, Nancy Shi, Helene Kortschak, Alex Berezhnoi, and Sebastian Becker. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.
