"Professor, my dreams grow darker. Does evil come from within us, or from beyond?" We watched a double feature of the original "Nosferatu" from 1922, directed by F.W. Murnau, and the most recent version, "Nosferatu" from 2024, directed by Robert Eggers, and we may need to sleep with the lights on. The original "Nosferatu" is the archetype for not only modern vampire movies but for horror movies in general. Count Orlok, as portrayed by Max Schreck (yes, it's his real name), is so iconic that it's become part of vampire lore. The Eggers film took this century-old material and made it so spooky, so creepy, and so modern that it's sure to endure for just as long. Lily-Rose Depp is a revelation as Ellen Hutter, and Billy Skarsgård is securing himself on the Mount Rushmore of modern horror. Nicholas Hoult and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are easy on the eyes, but the grotesque, eerie performances by Depp and Skarsgård seal the deal. In this spine-chilling episode, Stuart and Jacob welcome Stephanie back to the show as they dive into the haunting realms of the undead and compare the iconic 1922 silent film "Nosferatu," directed by F. W. Murnau, with the 2024 Robert Eggers remake. They explore the eerie atmosphere of the original, characterized by its German expressionism and the unsettling performance of Max Schreck, and contrast it with Eggers' modern take, featuring Bill Skarsgård in the titular role. What elements of horror transcend time, and how does each film reflect the societal fears of its era? Can the dreamlike terror of Murnau's vision hold a candle to the nightmarish intensity of Eggers' interpretation? And how does a hundred years of movie-making impact what audiences find scary? Also featured in this episode are bits on Stephanie's projector horror movie double features, a discussion of Bram Stoker's widow, the importance of soundscape in horror storytelling, and some idiotic fan-casts that'll make your head spin. Last year, director Robert Eggers, who burst onto the horror filmmaking scene with The Witch and The Lighthouse, premiered his remake of the classic 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film. Starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe, the film sees Bill Skarsgård step into the iconic Max Schreck role of Count Orlock. This is adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula bewitched audiences, becoming Egger's highest-grossing film to date, and earned four Academy Awards nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. But as we kick off our month of spooky movies, are our hosts seduced by this symphony of horror. Or, like a bad cover version, is Eggers' take ultimately toothless? Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 silent German horror film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire. Nosferatu was produced by Prana Film and is an unauthorized and unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel Dracula. Various names and other details were changed from the novel, including Count Dracula being renamed Count Orlok. Even with several details altered, Stoker's heirs sued over the adaptation, and a court ruling ordered all copies of the film to be destroyed. However, several prints of Nosferatu survived, and the film came to be regarded as an influential masterpiece of cinema. Today, Karl from When It Was Cool reviews this, very close to the novel, interpretation of Dracula in Nosferatu (1922). Support us on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/wiwcool

Alright, listen up—This week on *The Rotten Horror Picture Show*, Clay and Amanda are diving into F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent horror classic *Nosferatu*, the original unauthorized adaptation of *Dracula* that introduced the world to Max Schreck's eerie, claw-fingered, sunken-eyed Count Orlok. They'll talk about the film's German Expressionist style, its haunting atmosphere, and its place in horror history. And yeah, that's all great—but can we take a second to talk about the *rats*? No one warned me there'd be *this many rats*. Scurrying all over the place, spreading the plague, being generally shifty. And I *know* they're after my cheese. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying *Nosferatu* isn't a masterpiece. I'm not saying it's not one of the most important horror films ever made. What I *am* saying is that this movie has *way* too many rats. And I don't trust ‘em. Not one bit. See, I left a perfectly good block of sharp cheddar in my cooler on the porch, and ever since I watched *Nosferatu*, I can't stop looking over my shoulder. Those little creeps are organized. They see me watching the movie, they know I'm scared, and now they're probably coordinating some kind of tiny rat heist as we speak. I respect *Nosferatu* as a horror film, I do. But I'd respect it *more* if it had fewer disease-ridden, cheese-hungry vermin in it. So if you're here for the horror history, the incredible cinematography, and the discussion of silent film artistry, you're in luck. But if you're here for a movie that *doesn't* make you paranoid about rodents infiltrating your food supply, well… maybe keep a close eye on your cooler. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go buy a lot of traps. Enjoy the episode, not the rats. Rats are gross.patreon.com/thepenskyfile

Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Dive into the eerie legacy of Max Schreck, the man who brought terror to silent film audiences as Count Orlok in Nosferatu (1922). Often described as looking like he just crawled out of a crypt (because he did—on screen, anyway), Schreck's portrayal of the gaunt, rat-toothed vampire left such an impression that rumors swirled for decades claiming he was a real vampire. Spoiler: he wasn't, but his performance was so hauntingly convincing that it blurred the line between acting and the supernatural. Off-screen, Schreck was a far cry from his creepy Nosferatu persona—a theater actor who enjoyed his craft, not blood. Join us as we shine a (UV-free) spotlight on one of cinema's most enigmatic and misunderstood figures, and explore how his iconic role laid the foundation for every vampire to hiss their way onto the silver screen. Perfect for cinephiles, horror fans, and anyone curious about the origins of on-screen terror. Make sure to sink your teeth into this one!

Robert Eggers' remake of NOSFERATU will be stalking movie theaters on Christmas Day 2024, so Bob and Greg sit down with movie critic Matthew Zoller Seitz of Vulture/New York Magazine and www.RogerEbert.com to discuss the previous versions of the defining vampire classic. But before we get into that, Matt talks about his love of Robert Eggers as a filmmaker, and takes a deep dive into THE NORTHMAN (2022), Eggers' retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet as a bloody and ironic Viking tale. We also talk about Eggers' THE LIGHTHOUSE (2019) as slapstick comedy, and different takes on DRACULA, as NOSFERATU started as an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic horror novel. As the only one of us who's seen the new NOSFERATU, Matt dishes about that as well without any giving any spoilers, and talks about interviewing WILLEM DAFOE who plays the vampire hunter in the upcoming vampire epic. Dafoe is definitely a guy who's been in a lot of movies to get stoned to. For our old movies--or the classic films if you prefer--we pair cannabis with the film that started it all, F.W. Murnau's original NOSFERATU: A SYMPHONY OF HORROR from 1922, a film that continues to impact horror movies today despite being over 100 years old. And then we pivot to 1979 with Werner Herzog's NOSFERATU THE VAMPIRE with KLAUS KINSKY as the bald and brooding bloodsucker in a movie that is incredibly faithful to its source material while still being pure Herzog. This is a brisk episode at just over an hour long, so Bob didn't get the chance to ask Matt and Greg who would win in an UNDEAD HELL IN A CELL MATCH between Max Schreck (1922), Klaus Kinski (79) and Bill Skarsgård (2022), although Bob did have that question in his notes at taping time. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 silent German Expressionist vampire film directed by F. W. Murnau and starring Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a vampire who preys on the wife of his estate agent and brings the plague to their town. Critic and historian Kim Newman declared it as a film that set the template for the genre of horror film. They then delve into the production and legal battles surrounding Nosferatu, highlighting the occult influences and the actions taken by Florence Balcombe, Bram Stoker's widow, to protect the rights to Dracula. Despite attempts to destroy the film, Nosferatu (1922) has endured and become a cultural icon. This conversation explores various themes related to the cultural impact and consumption of vampire movies, as well as the legal battles and copyright issues surrounding the film 'Nosferatu'. The discussion delves into the concept of public art and the rights of creators, as well as the influence of popular folklore and the role of travel narratives in shaping cultural perceptions. Errata: Not really an error, but the quote from the Whatever Podcast is, "It's very convenient that women waited until after one of the most deadly and brutal wars to secure their right to vote." The vampire's name in "Nosferatu" (1922) was Graf Orlok, played by Max Schreck. The film starring Willem Defoe was "Shadow of the Vampire," not "Kiss of the Vampire." Craig replaced "Possum Kingdom" with Delta Spirit's "How 'Bout It." It's not made clear, but Nicky Minaj settled with Tracy Chapman. The "Mark" in Devo is Mark Mothersbaugh. Vampire Radu Vladislas Talks Horror, Character and The 2023 Release of Subspecies: BloodriseEvery generation has their monsters and while the 70's and 80's saw the monsters moving away from the gothic castles of Transylvania to the suburbs, there is one monster from the 90's that reigns supreme in the mold of the classic vampires going all the way back to Max Schreck's iconic performance as Orlok in F.W. Murnau's masterwork Nosferatu.Produced in 1991 by genre royalty Charles Band's Full Moon Entertainment and directed by Full Moon veteran Ted Nicolau, Subspecies has become a beloved franchise spawning multiple excellent sequels including series highlight Bloodstone: Subspecies 2 which may be Full Moon's best film. There's a lot about Subspecies to admire from Nicolau's assured direction to the stunning location shooting in Romania and the rock-solid performances from Denice Duff and Kevin Spirtas as the heroes but the star of the show is unquestionably the series antagonist, Radu.A centuries old vampire, Radu is grotesque and vile, usually gore dripping from his fanged maw while he speaks in a rasping, decrepit voice. This is not the romantic vampire of Hammer films but a force of evil that will stop at nothing to reclaim his birthright, the bloodstone. He's one of SYG host Kevin Lane's favorite monsters. Radu is played by Anders Hove.A Danish actor, Ander's deftly manages the balance of keeping Radu sinister and menacing but also imbues the character with an unexpected empathy and a haunting past. It's a truly remarkable transformation when you find that Anders himself is a lowkey, kind, thoughtful man.Anders and Kevin Lane talk about his years growing up in Greenland as well as his father's significant political impact, why he thinks there's far more important things to life than being an actor, the challenges of shooting in Romania and how important it is to find the humanity when playing a monster.SYG will have more interviews with the folks behind the Subspecies saga, including Charles Band, Ted Nicolau, Denice Duff and Kevin Spirtas as we all prepare for the much anticipated Subspecies: Bloodrise, which sees the gang all returning after a more than 20-year gap since the last film. The film has been shot and will be released in 2023. Without further delay my fledglings, let there be a bloodbath with Anders Hove.Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the Spill Your Guts Halloween Special! The Man Behind The Masks: Doug Jones Talks About What It's Like To Truly Embody A MonsterFrankenstein's monster, the wolfman, Nosferatu (or Count Orlok to be precise) and the Phantom of the Opera. All iconic monsters of early cinema played by equally iconic actors such as Max Schreck, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney and Lon Chaney Jr. These performances have stood the test of time not only for their inspired makeup and design but because the actors portraying them found the heart in the monster. Whether it's Karloff's touching humanity as Doctor Frankenstein's shunned creation or Max Schreck's spidery skulking as one of cinema's earliest vampires, these are the monsters that paved the way for countless monsters throughout film history. In the current landscape of cinema monsters there is one man who casts a very, very long shadow. He has portrayed so many memorable characters that will endure that it's hard to count. That actor is Doug Jones. For some, Doug's first stand out role will be as Billy Butcherson in the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus. For others, it's Abe Sapien in Guillermo Del Toro's hit Hellboy. For Kevin Lane, it's his dual roles as the Faun and Pale Man in Del Toro's dark fairy tale masterpiece Pan's Labyrinth. And it's in Doug Jones that Del Toro found his muse. Doug's almost supernatural way of communicating through movement what most actors could not say in a monologue has created a celebrated ongoing collaboration between one of genre cinema's best filmmakers and best actors. This episode is very special because not only do we adore Doug, but host Kevin Lane had the opportunity to sit down with Doug in person in Toronto. Listeners of Spill Your Guts may know that most of our conversations are recorded remotely. There isn't a better guest for us to have had the opportunity to speak to in the flesh! Doug and Kevin discuss his childhood self-consciousness about his body, his early mime work and sort of meeting Christopher Walken on the set of Tim Burton's gothic masterpiece Batman Returns, his deliciously evil role as a cannibal in Larry Fessenden's episode of Fear Itself and his many collaborations with Del Toro, including their best picture Oscar winning film The Shape of Water. As much as Doug has portrayed characters in many magical films, there is nothing more magical then the man himself.
