The idea to revisit the world of “Evil Dead” had been tossed around for years since “Army of Darkness” was released in 1992 but a direct sequel just never came together. That's when the possibility of a remake started being discussed with original director Sam Raimi welcoming the idea as well as longtime friend and producer Robert Tapert. The same couldn't be said for original star Bruce Campbell, who bristled at the thought of remaking “Evil Dead,” especially if the film would just rehash what had already been done in the first three films. That's when Raimi discovered a young filmmaker named Fede Alvarez, who landed on his radar thanks to an ambitious short film he made titled “Panic Attack.” Raimi actually had an idea to develop that short film into a full length feature but the movie got locked up in development hell and that's when he started talking to Alvarez about potentially rebooting “Evil Dead” with a new film. Alvarez and his writing partner penned the script, which ultimately got Campbell on board as well because this version of the movie didn't introduce a new Ash but instead offered an entirely new kind of protagonist into the “Evil Dead” universe. The finished product was a blood-soaked, horrifying update to the iconic franchise that still featured a wayward group of young people traveling to the woods where they encountered the Book of the Dead… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to make sure the basement door stays locked and the nail gun is put away as we review the 2013 remake of “Evil Dead”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell

Karen takes on Japan! Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss The Grudge, the 2004 J-horror film starring Buffy aka Sarah Michelle Gellar. Spoilers ahead! The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow, created where the person died. Those who encounter the curse die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. The following events are explained in their actual order, however, the film is presented in a nonlinear narrative. In 2001, Kayako Saeki, a housewife living in suburban Tokyo, is in love with college professor Peter Kirk, obsessively writing about him in a diary. Her husband Takeo becomes jealous as he discovers the diary and believes that Kayako is having an affair with another man. Takeo brutally murders her, and their young son Toshio for walking in on the murder, and the pet cat Mar in a fit of rage. After Takeo hides the bodies in the house, Kayako's ghost hangs him with her hair. After receiving a letter from Kayako, Peter visits the Saeki house only to find both her and Takeo's corpses along with Toshio's ghost. Shocked, he flees the scene and commits suicide the next day. The remainder of the Saeki family rise again as ghosts due to the curse, notably Kayako, who appears as an onryō. In 2004, the Williams family from America move into the Saeki house. While Matt is thrilled with the house, his wife Jennifer and dementia-ridden mother Emma feel uncomfortable. Matt and Jennifer are quickly consumed by the curse. Yoko, a care worker, arrives at the house to find Emma alone before she encounters Kayako, who drags her up into the attic. Concerned about Yoko's disappearance, her employer Alex sends another care worker, Karen Davis, to take over the care of Emma. At the house, Karen discovers Toshio sealed up in a wardrobe and later on witnesses Kayako's spirit descending from the ceilings to claim Emma. Sam Raimi's cabin in the woods film par excellence The Evil Dead stands as the paragon of independent, cult, and horror films since it's release in 1981. It's influence is felt in the films of the Coen brothers, Peter Jackson, and Edgar Wright. It's dynamic direction and camera work declared a new and bold style for the 80s and 90s, but it's real influence for independent filmmakers is in it's success story as a bootstrapped production. (0:26) - Intro(5:32) - Trailer(8:19) - Synopsis(14:13) - Review(20:35) - Score(34:48) - Spoilers(1:20:10) - The Evil Dead Trivia Challenge(1:29:10) - Outro Art by Dustin Goebel (@dgoebel00 on Insta) https://youtu.be/NL6mioAlpJk Childhood Friends The Evil Dead launched the careers of childhood friends director Sam Raimi, and lead actor Bruce Campbell, which you probably recognize as Brisco County Jr. from Fox's 90s television hit The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. During and after high school they collaborated shooting short films on super 8 film. This film began shooting right after Sam Raimi turned 20, and he considers it a right of passage in his life. As first time filmmakers, Raimi, Campbell and producer Robert Tapert sought financing by shooting a "proof of concept" short film titled Within the Woods. The strategy worked, and as the result of many rounds of private investment, they were able to cobble together a budget of $375,000. Even Bruce Campbell's family's property in Northern Michigan was leveraged to finish the film and blow it up to the industry standard of 35 mm to be shown in theaters. https://youtu.be/6Ccmkooeo5g?t=617 Sam Raimi Talking about the budget of The Evil Dead Production Initial photography was shot over the course of 12 weeks from the end of 1979 to the beginning of 1980. It was a grueling experience for all involved. The production was shot on location in an actual cabin in the remote woods of Morristown Tennessee. The cabin had no running water, and actors would go days without showering. Campbell described being doused with fake blood so much that he could only ride in the back of a truck to get home. While filming, the cast and crew of 13 actually slept in the cabin. The conditions were so cold that Campbell said that after drying a blood soaked shirt outside, it cracked in half when he tried to put it on again. The ironic part is that Raimi and crew decided to shoot in Tennessee instead of their home state of Michigan to avoid extreme conditions in the winter. As it turned out, Michigan has an unusually tame winter, and Tennessee had one of the coldest winters in 1979. Ingenuity with a small budget The makeup and effects were accomplished by Tom Sullivan completely without CGI, relying on foam latex, corn syrup blood, and stop motion photography. The low budget production was creative in its use of makeshift camera riggings such as the "vas-o-cam" which slid the camera down wooden ramps. One of the most influential techniques was the "shaky-cam" which was accomplished by mounting the camera to a 2x4 and having two operators at each end to roughly simulate a steady-cam. This technique was used for the POV shots of the demons running through the woods, along with the final shot that was accomplished with a tripod mounted to a motorcycle driven by Raimi. The Coen brothers used the shaky-cam technique in Blood Simple after Ethan Coen was inspired as an assistant editor for The Evil Dead. Reception of The Evil Dead The film is so gory that it was unrated, and banned in many countries upon its release. The grueling and plucky production resulted in a unique and shocking film that has since become a cult icon in the horror community. Synopsis It tells the story of five Michigan State students vacationing to a remote cabin in the Tennessee country. During their playful and drug fueled exploration of the cabin, they stumble upon an ancient Samarian tome that is a translation of the Egyptian Book of the De...
Mitchell Whitt from the "Morbidly Macabre" podcast found that he was not alone when it came to the appreciation of "Dance of the Dead", a Ghost House Underground feature that was directed by Gregg Bishop ("The Other Side" and "V/H/S Viral") and written by Joe Ballarini ("A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting"). Ghost House Pictures was founded by "Evil Dead" and "Spider-Man" director Sam Raimi and his producer Robert Tapert, so it was only natural to be drawn to a feature their money was behind with humor and ridiculous zombies to fight. This led to a conversation that explores both of our experiences in high school. We discuss the concepts of: how prom really affects teenagers, the importance of trauma to really force us to grow up, and how we both ended up at one point or another in blue shirts with yellow tags. "Dance of the Dead" features characters that reminds all white kids how great it is to be done with public education.

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Dark Discussions has reached their 400th episode and once again we let the listeners choose our topic; at least choose which film out of sixteen cult classics. The movie to come out on top is the 1987 cult classic, Evil Dead 2. This is the film that basically made the careers of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Robert Tapert, Kassie Wesley, Ted Raimi, Peter Deming, ,Joseph LoDuca among others. The true definition of cult and midnight movie. Ash Williams and his girlfriend, Linda, head out to a quaint cabin in the woods. Surprisingly the location appears to have been recently inhabited by an archeologist and his wife. But both now seem to be missing. While playing back a dictation machine, the voice of the professor reads out various quotes from a mystical book, the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, also known as the Book of the Dead. Soon out in the woods, spirits and demons begin to break through dimensional doors resulting in what will be Ash’s worst nightmare. Released to theaters unrated, the film was actually a modest success at the box office. Yet, once it went to video, it became an immediate cult classic and arguably one of the greatest horror films of all time. Dark Discussions, to celebrate their milestone, give their thoughts to this unforgettable masterpiece. Directed by David Slade (HANNIBAL, TV Series), the film was produced by horror icon Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert which was adapted for film from the comic book of the same name. Although production of the film took place in New Zealand, "30 Days of Night" captured the winter dread of Alaska with its near flawless set design and cinematography. The film's bleak setting was counterbalanced with incredibly original blood-thirsty creatures who paint the town red as they pick off the townspeople one by one. Grab your parka and shovel your way through this frigid flick. Then, sit down with us as we plow through the pros and cons of the unique film adaptation of "30 Days of Night"! Vi pratar också om: Within the Woods, Book of the Dead, Sam Raimi, Robert Tapert, Bruce Campbell, Joel Cohen, The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn, Ash vs Evil Dead, Deicide, Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Exorcisten, The Blair Witch Project, Fede Alvarez, Joseph LoDuca, Danny Elfman, Necronomicon, Darkman, De Laurentiis, Spiderman, En enkel plan, The Gift, Drag me to Hell och förstås lite grann om Stephen King. Nostalgi, löst tyckande och akademisk analys i en salig röra.
Following the 2002 release of the Steve Niles Graphic Novel, Sam Raimi and producing partner Robert Tapert secured the rights to the theatrical adaptation of a small Alaskan town under siege by the threat of a horde of bloodthirsty vampires. Bringing on director David Slade to oversee the projects realization. The exhaustive 33 night shoot led to one of the truest adaptations of its source material and on October 19th, 2007 David Slade's 30 DAYS OF NIGHT was released. Modernizing ancient lore for a new generation of moviegoers
After a long run with their production company Renaissance Pictures, they founded Ghost House Pictures in 2002. They've since given us films such as “The Grudge”, “Drag Me To Hell”, and this year's hit “Don't Breathe”. Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Dark Discussions heads to Monster Mania, the Philadelphia suburban convention in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, where such luminous genre favorites as Carrie Fischer, Malcolm McDowell, and the legendary George A. Romero made appearances. Co-host Mike and his wife, Pam, took a weekend in the middle of August to attend and meet some of theirs and our favorite stars. Throughout the hours, Mike was able to interview a number of folks that you may have heard of, may know of, or may meet for the very first time. Included are Betsy Baker and Teresa Tilly of the original 1981 Evil Dead film, Tim Balme of the classic Kiwi film Braindead/Dead Alive, long time Hollywood actor Bruce Davison most recently from The Lords of Salem, and Dick Warlock who played Michael Myers in Halloween 2. Full of trivia and tidbits with actors who worked personally alongside Sam Raimi, Rob Zombie, Bruce Campbell, Robert Tapert, John Carpenter, and Peter Jackson, co-host Mike triumphantly provides both insight and interviews with the actors involved in many classic genre films. In addition, he gets interviews with a number of producers, film makers and authors including Horror Writer’s Association members, Brian Patrick McKinley and Kristin Battestella.
