Stephanie Kaplan Lewis founded Her Campus in 2009 with Annie Wang, and Windsor Western as college undergraduates. They saw a need for college women to have a publication made for them by other college women. Her Campus has grown since then as a profitable, growing media business with 85 employees. Stephanie says Her Campus expanded revenue by 50% last year – and did it with an entirely ad-focused business model. Stephanie credits the growth in large part to building a long-term business that works in any environment rather than a specific environment, such as the easy-money era that's now in the rear-view mirror. The twist is that Her Campus is part agency, part publisher, with campaigns leaning on experiential and influencer marketing. This is a path many publishing models will go, as the economics of relying on putting ads on webpages or newsletters grow more difficult. Stephanie and I discuss: The forced discipline of a bootstrapped model. Her Campus has been profitable for all 15 years of its existence. Imagine. Not aging up with the audience. Her Campus turns its audience over by design, as it stays focused on college women. When it started, Her Campus was for millennials, and now it's for Gen Z.  Being part agency, part publisher. Her Campus ends up with other media companies as customers.  Doing the basics well. In the media business, strategy is overrated. Execution tends to play a bigger role in separating winners and losers. That means doing the boring things well: Setting achievable sales goals and hitting them, excelling at client service, collecting receivables and such.

Even better than any story she shares is the way Patrice shares them, and the golden nuggets of wisdom that are woven through each one. She gets so triggered by this that she now runs a business built upon proving all those same people wrong...by helping them uncover their (very much not vanilla) story. Before stumbling into entrepreneurship at the top of 2017 after losing all of her esteem and confidence at a toxic media start-up, she was an award-winning producer at the TODAY show for 6 years. She left at the peak of her career in 2016- the same year she won a Gracie Award for her storytelling -because she was poached by that toxic media startup on maternity leave...and WHO gets money thrown at them on maternity leave? Though that job proved toxic, it set Patrice on the path to building her own storytelling company helping visionary founders and businesses uncover and share the stories that will turn heads and open wallets. Patrice works with brands from Afterpay, Lululemon and Netflix to startups like Parsley Health and Her Campus, helping founders & teams strengthen their storytelling skills. When COVID hit, it forced her online—and Patrice found her groove. She started running virtual workshops, coaching founders on how to craft stories that captivate. Turns out, she loves to teach. And she's really good at getting results for her students. While Patrice's career has taken some unexpected turns, her passion for storytelling has endured. She believes the stories we tell ourselves shape our realities. The stories businesses choose to tell shape how they are perceived. By seizing control of the narrative, you seize control of your destiny. You get to write the story of who you attract. How cool is that. Her favorite social media platform is Instagram (although she keeps trying to date Linkedin) where you can find her giving you a behind-the-scenes look at life in NY & Lisbon with 3 small boys and running a business. —---------------------------------------- Grab our free guide Sell Yourself: https://kristademcher.kartra.com/page/sellyourselfguide Learn more about ACORN: www.kristademcher.com Follow SHE SELLS HE SELLS on IG:: https://www.instagram.com/shesellshesellspodcast

Hannah and Maia try and get to the bottom of this conundrum. Has the 'pick me' always been around or did early 2000s chick flicks do such a number on us that now we have no choice but to clap back? Miranda Perez is a cross-topic multimedia journalist on a mission to highlight and elevate marginalized voices. Evolving beyond the newsroom, she recently joined the team at HBCU Founders Initiative, a nonprofit organization that is engaging rising HBCU students and alumni interested in pursuing entrepreneurship. For those unfamiliar with the term HBCU, it refers to any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans. Perez is playing a critical role supporting entrepreneurs participating in HBCU Founder Initiative's Pre-Accelerator, an 8-week program for early-stage founders who are past the ideation stage and ready to validate a problem and build a minimum viable product. Beyond her role at HBCUFI, Perez still writes about business, tech, politics, social issues, fashion, and entertainment, among other topics. She also consults with businesses navigating societal and technological change. She grew up as an inner-city kid in Chicago. She describes school “as an escape for a lot of the hardships I faced growing up.” She pushed herself academically and became the first person in her family to graduate from college, earning a Mass Media Arts degree from Clark Atlanta University, a top 25 nationally ranked HBCU and Black Ivy League school. During college, Miranda served as the Editor-In-Chief of CAU's campus newspaper, The Panther, and as the President/Editor-In-Chief of CAU's online magazine, Her Campus. During that time, Miranda had her first national byline in The Nation as a sophomore in college. These accomplishments won the attention of editors across the country, and Perez earned and held editor/reporter roles at BostInno, Insider and BuiltIn upon graduation. She's also appeared on programs such as MSNBC discussing education equity for Hispanic Americans. In this episode, we speak with Perez about the challenges she's overcome in life, and her evolution from a cross-topic multimedia journalist into a dynamic branding and storytelling consultant.

Poor Historians: Misadventures in Medical History Podcast

As we approach the objectively best holiday of the year in Max's humble opinion, we thought it best to do some Halloween themed episodes for the month of October.  In this episode we'll talk about the link between modern medications and their roots in what were suspected practices of witchcraft.  There seemed to be magic in the salves and potions used by suspected witches of the 12th-19th centuries.  We'll unpack what may have been causing the unusual effects of these treatments as well as some possible reasons for the stigma associated with women as healers during that time.  We'll also figure out what happened when our sentient computer was released to reconcile with her boyfriend, the James Webb Space Telescope.  Things got a little carried away on the previous episode.Lastly our show had a kind mention through an article on Her Campus about binge-worthy podcasts.  Highlights include reference to middle-aged dudes telling dad jokes and gory medical stories.  We wear that proudly.  Article linked here. There's a reason why we rarely speak about the modern day investigation into the Burger Chef. We have no confidence in the abilities of the officer who is currently tasked with looking into this high-profile quadruple homicide. And today, in the interest of transparency, we're going to tell you exactly why that is.Bill Dalton is the current lead investigator on the Burger Chef for the Indiana State Police. Ashley Flowers is a millionaire serial plagiarist who also makes true crime podcasts, most notably Crime Junkie. Together, they came up with Red Ball, a four-part podcast on the Burger Chef murders that ran in November of 2019. It was badly-written copaganda, but the backstory behind the series is even worse. You see, Flowers handed over complete editorial control of her show to the state police. In exchange for this puffery, Dalton allowed Flowers to exclusively read and monetize investigative case files that not even the families of the victims have ever been permitted to see. And the Indiana State Police collectively shrugged their shoulders at the misconduct. In this episode, we'll get into Flowers' reputation within the true crime community. We'll talk to true crime podcasters Robin Warder and Esther Ludlow, who Flowers plagiarized, as well as journalist Cathy Frye, who blew the whistle on the scandal. We'll tell you about all the unprofessional nonsense between Flowers and Dalton that Kevin witnessed firsthand. And we'll break down why exactly all of this should horrify anyone who cares about unsolved cold cases in Indiana.Because, to put it bluntly, the ISP seem to have learned the wrong lesson from this mess.Listen to Esther Ludlow's episode "Let's Taco 'Bout the Crime Junkie Plagiarism Scandal": (shorturl.at/pBDGS)Read Cathy Frye's series "Caught in the Web" about the murder of Kacie Woody: (shorturl.at/lvzI0)Watch Dalton's Burger Chef press conference here: (shorturl.at/aiqsD)Here's Adam Wren's story for the Indianapolis Monthly: (shorturl.at/klD36)Here's the Flowers interview by Tracy Hazzard of Authority magazine: (shorturl.at/eBXZ5)Here's the Flowers interview that ran on Her Campus: (shorturl.at/hoILT)Here's the article about Crime Junkie from Peter White that ran in Deadline Hollywood: (shorturl.at/ajBRV)Here's the recent article on Flowers' business moves from Variety's Todd Spangler: (shorturl.at/ouzHU)Here's Spangler's reporting on the Crime Junkie plagiarism scandal: (shorturl.at/fmxJK)Here's the New York Times report on the Crime Junkie plagiarism scandal from Derrick Bryson Taylor and Christine Hauser: (shorturl.at/jJKV5)Here's the Buzzfeed article on the Crime Junkie plagiarism scandal from Stephanie McNeal: (shorturl.at/qwDJM) Check out the Trail Went Cold from Robin Warder (shorturl.at/evwS4) and Once Upon a Crime from Esther Ludlow (shorturl.at/joxMX) wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow the Murder Sheet on social media:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC .See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

TW: Eating Disorders Today I am joined by author and Her Campus Deputy Editor Iman Hariri-Kia. Iman discusses how she transitioned from singing and songwriting into working as a writer and editor for a slew of amazing publications, including Teen Vogue, Bustle, Elite Daily, Man Repeller, and now Her Campus. We start out the conversation discussing her time writing and working in the Sex and Relationship space, and how her commitment to writing openly and vulnerably overrode any fears she had about disclosing information on her former sexual experiences. Iman also writes openly about mental health and relays how some of these articles, while initially difficult for her Iranian-American family, ended up opening up conversations that otherwise would never have existed. This episode delves into a lot, but some other topics include the political nature of hair, especially for women of color; how what you do should not define who you are; the dangers of fit and diet teas and how they contribute to disordered eating; and the importance of youth culture and why Gen Zs inspire Iman and her writing. This episode is extremely insightful and satisfying, as Iman is equally eloquent in her speaking as she is in her writing. In todays podcast, we touch on what it means to back up or discount our own desires, needs and wants in order to keep the peace. Where does this constant backing up come from and how we can start to get ourselves out of it. Living a life of constantly discounting ourselves to allow others to feel good leads to a self-loathing and victum role instead of loving ourselves AND loving others. We end up taking a backseat in order to look like a "good girl" or "nice guy" instead of understanding that the second greatest commandment and applying it to our lives; "love your nightbor AS YOU LOVE YOURSELF!" (emphasis mine!) Let's take a look at how we can learn to recognize this twisted up behavior and learn to love ourselves SO THAT we can love others as well! Let’s talk about media, college, and the entrepreneur. When you hear college, media, and startup, you probably think of Facebook. Well, today’s special guest is also a Harvard startup alum who shook up the world of college media catering specifically to female students. She was in her senior year at Harvard when she co-founded and launched HerCampus.com   Stephanie Kaplan Lewis is the CEO and Editor-in-Chief of Her Campus. Her Campus is the #1 New Media brand for female college students, and a 360 degree college marketing agency. Her Campus reaches over 35 million users monthly across the Her Campus media network, and Her Campus marketing clients include H&M, Ikea, Vera Bradley, and many, many more.   Join us for a fantastic discussion on calculated risks, first time challenges, and startup success! Stay tuned to learn more about Stephanie’s journey, the Her Campus community, and going from being a full-time student to a full-time CEO.   In This Episode Stephanie’s Story and Her Campus Launching a Startup Backup Plans and Calculated Risks Challenges Working Relationships   Quotes in This Episode   “I think there's always a question of whether entrepreneurs are kind of risk averse or risk loving or somewhere in the middle. And for us, no question that pursuing our own business was more risky than going a very traditional path.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   “I think there are a lot of benefits to being a young first time entrepreneur, but there are also just so many gaps that you have in terms of pure knowledge and skills and it's really helpful to have mentors and advisors that you can lean on to help fill in those holes.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   “I think vacation is a relative term when it's your own business. So, we're never truly unplugged.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   “We were college students coming out of a liberal arts undergraduate, and we had never worked full time in the real world. And, we've completely bootstrapped the company, as well. So, we've opted not to raise money, and we've funded it entirely through our revenues, and we've been profitable since we launched.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   “I really never growing up saw myself as someone in business, let alone as an entrepreneur. I always thought I was going to be a writer or an editor or a journalist when I grew up. So it's been really interesting to see I guess the evolution of what I'm interested in and what I find fulfilling and meaningful to do in my work day to day.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   “ And I think there's a big misconception out there that you're going to have this overnight success, and you're going to go from nothing to this huge company so fast. And then you're going to sell your business for tons of money or whatever it may be. But really, it's a really long road. It's really hard work. It's sprinkled with some really fun, exciting times, no question. But most of the time you are just slogging through for what feels like an endless stretch of time.” —Stephanie Kaplan Lewis   Resources Stephanie’s LinkedIn and Twitter Her Campus Website Stephanie’s Book: The Her Campus Guide to College Life
