Happy Valentine's Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared. Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams' eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010. We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don't, and the lasting effect many of Hyams' films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers. There's much talk about Hyams' ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies.  Mike makes the case that 2010 is more watchable than 2001: A Space Odyssey, Conor attempts to get over how corrupt Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are as cops in Running Scared, and Dan sings the praises of Hyams' Narrow Margin. There's extended conversation about Robert Blake, co-star of Hyams' debut Busting, an appreciation of director John Badham (specifically Blue Thunder), and a reflection on the enormity of the production of End of Days. The review of 2024 films are in full swing, but first there is the annual look back at the movies seen last year that were NOT FROM last year. Plus, why did Green Book get so much hate, Eastwood represents (even if he is a d-bag of a romantic partner) and Powers Boothe makes another list. Also... Coming out more than sixteen years after its beloved predecessor (2001: A Space Odyssey), this might have been the very first "Legacy Sequel."  Also whereas the first film was directed by the late great cinema legend Stanley Kubrick, this one was helmed by journeyman director Peter Hyams (Running Scared, Capricorn One, Timecop) who in tandem with the author (Arthur C. Clarke) of the original source material was determined to craft a more conventional story as opposed to the ground-breaking 1968 classic which was much more abstract in it structure and tone.  Picking up nine years after the events of that first film, we follow Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) who planned that previous mission of the USS Discovery to Jupiter where those onboard discovered the mysterious "Monolith."  Dr. Floyd is determined to find out what exactly transpired so he hitches a ride with a Soviet mission there commanded by Captain Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren).   And what they eventually encounter and discover is...."something wonderful?"  Also along for the ride are John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, and Elya Baskin in an epic sci-fi adventure which might not approach the majesty of its predecessor but actually holds up better as pure entertainment, now forty years after it was first released in theaters. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

To mark the film's 40th anniversary, we revisit Peter Hyams' 2010 – a brave follow-up to a literal monolith in science fiction film history. In what was then called a 'belated' rather than a 'legacy' sequel, the film adapts Arthur C. Clarke's novel and features a stellar cast of Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban and, returning from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Keir Dullea and Douglas Rain as Dave Bowman and HAL 9000. Yes, it's full of stars. But it is a worthy follow-up that stands on its own? Or is it a pale imitation and a footnote? Find out! Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky. It's no longer Kubrick Month because we're late recording and uploading this and P4, but regardless, we're here to complete our Kubrickian Odysseys!   Dhruv, Amartya, and Hemant have spent the entirety of July (and will now spend the last week of August and the first week of September) revisiting and discussing 10 (of 13) Kubrick-directed films (the Horror and Noir films will be discussed in October and November, respectively!) plus one conceptualized and obsessed over by him but eventually directed by his dear friend, Steven Spielberg.   In Part 4 (of 4), we focus primarily on the monolith of Kubrick's filmography and hard science fiction itself: "2001: A Space Odyssey." Everything from Ridley Scott's "Alien" to Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" to Denis Villeneuve's "Arrival" to Werner Herzog's philosophy, and most importantly, Michael Bay's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is referenced here, as the three of us try to make sense of Kubrick's enigmatic masterpiece. We go through the film chapter by chapter, detailing our interpretations of each of its mysterious, short-story-like building blocks before leaping its two "real" offsprings—"2010—The Year We Make Contact" and, more extensively, Steven Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence"—to, hopefully, provide some legitimate answers to 2001's enduring, endless mysteries. Madolyn Smith Osborne had the kind of fairy tale show business beginning that most can only fantasize about. While still in school at The University of Southern California, she won her first paycheck with a serendipitous audition before famed choreographer, Gower Champion, when a lead dancer and understudy had to be replaced in the Broadway-bound production of Pal Joey starring Lena Horne.  Madolyn's passion for musical theater as well as her training with beloved choreographers Bill and Jacqui Landrum, prepared her well for the opportunity. A year later, on the eve of graduating from USC's School of Dramatic Arts., her mentor, the late, iconic theatre and film producer and Academy Award-winning actor, John Houseman, launched a swan song of sorts for her with a production of Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, in which Madolyn starred in the role of Helena. Mr. Houseman had invited various industry professionals to see the show in the 99-seat Stop Gap Theater on campus, including his former protege, film director, Jim Bridges, who, upon seeing Madolyn's performance, invited her to play the role of John Travolta's mistress, Pam, in the cult classic, Urban Cowboy. Madolyn went on to give multiple award-winning performances in the L.A. theater scene. Among her triumphs, she created the title role of Emily in Stephen Metcalfe's play of the same name, which was directed by the renowned producer-director, Jack O'Brien, during its premiere at San Diego's revered Old Globe Theatre.  When Madolyn was studying with legendary actress, Kim Stanley, and opera singer, Gloria Lane, she became a founding member of L.A. Theatre Works.  Madolyn also enjoyed a terrific TV and film career in which she found herself starring in features opposite the likes of no less than Steve Martin in All of Me, Roy Scheider in 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Chevy Chase in Funny Farm, Joe Pesci in The Super, and in TV shows like Due South, Cheers, If Tomorrow Comes, and Sadat. But at the height of her powers, all of that was abruptly interrupted by a chronic illness that she fights to this day.Madolyn resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband, former NHL hockey great, Mark Osborne, and 2 adult daughters who live nearby.            For the record, Madolyn and I have known one another for more years than either of us will admit, having met and worked together on a few productions while we were both in drama school at the USC.

Patreon only pre-pod: mike check, Devon's epic phone and family journey, and only Siths deal in absolutes. Have YOU ever dealt with unreasonable family members? NEVER, I'm sure! This episode contains: We three hosts record on MAR10 day! Ben played so much Mario Kart, not in celebration but just alone, to be cool. Steven's plans to watch comedienne Taylor Tomlinson in Los Angeles fell through. Steven finally played Fallout Wasteland Warfare for real, shout out to Gordon's Good Games! Alliteration! What's up David!? You Fallout Collector you! There's a local Discord for tabletop games, and Steven has found his people. Ben watched 2010: The Year We Make Contact with his son, and that film holds up! It's a hard sci-fi film made for normals (not quite like the first film 2001: A Space Odyssey). It's almost like an entire season of For All Mankind, only filmed in 1984. Why don't they make film versions of 2061 or 3001? Devon managed to survive an Ewok attack, and then proceeds to discuss doors and rooms. Ahem, SECRET doors for SECRET ROOMS! Devon's R2D2 replica will get weathered if he puts it in a secret room for sure. Devon then considers making the ultimate scifi Halloween garage. Hey! Books are smart: Autogenerating a Book Series From Three Years of iMessages. Software engineer Ben Kettle wanted to be able to easily browse through old iMessage conversations from years past, so he developed a process to extract the iMessage database from iPhone backups, query it with SQL, and generate LaTeX source code to create printable books from the messages. How does one pronounce LaTeX? LAY-tek! He made an on-demand printed book containing the longest thread he'd had over three years. He had some issues supporting emojis, but was able to work around it. He split the conversation into three volumes and was able to inexpensively print paperback books through Barnes & Noble Press. The source code is available online for others to generate message books from their own conversation histories. We're not going to make books like this… will you? https://benkettle.xyz/posts/message-book/ Brain matters: Lack of focus doesn't equal lack of intelligence -- it's proof of an intricate brain. A new study provides insights into how the brain coordinates focus and filtering of distractions to pay attention. Lead author and neuroscientist Harrison Ritz has a cool name! Researchers used an fMRI task where participants had to distinguish colors and motions of dots. The anterior cingulate cortex tracks task difficulty and directs the intraparietal sulcus to adjust its "focusing and filtering knobs" - increasing focus on relevant information like color and reducing sensitivity to irrelevant information like motion. This shows the brain coordinates attention through multiple regions working together, rather than a single capacity limit. Understanding these coordination mechanisms provides insights into both effective attention and attention disorders. The research suggests lack of focus does not mean low intelligence, but rather shows how complex the brain's coordination of attention is. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/03/240308122958.htm Patreon only mid-pod: Did y'all finish Avatar: The Last Airbender on Netflix? Ben discusses. Remember Wizards First Rule / Legend of the Seeker?… Ben loved to get drunk and angry at the show. Will they get to do a live action Legend of Korra? That would be cool. 3 Body Problem (Netflix) reviews are out, Devon talks about it. Fallout trailer! What's a good cadence to release streaming television? Book Club: You Have Arrived At Your Destination by Amor Towles. Devon picked this one because he really enjoyed Towles' book A Gentleman in Moscow. The audiobook for You Have Arrived At Your Destination was read by David Harbor. We go over it. Is it about choice? Is it about a multiverse? It's confusing, but not if you apply True Lies logic to it. We discuss predestination: How accurate can the prediction be? What affects the choices we make? If they can be that accurate, how much does feee will affect the outcome? Do we have free will at all? Do our lives fit a three act structure? What act are you in in your life? Is this act structure about what happens to you, or is it about the perspective you bring to your life? Are you just waiting to die? Is that bad or good? Which of three lives would you pick for your child? Ben gets irrationally angry at the possibility of a different structure for the story that is only hinted at. Steven and Devon give it a high rating, but Ben gives it 1/5 of a star out of 4 stars. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/49665863-you-have-arrived-at-your-destination Next week, our book club will be covering How it Unfolds by James S. What's this, a well-regarded science fiction conspiracy thriller which featured an all-star cast and yet no one remembers it?? Well yeah if this film happens to come out the same year as Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind....two BEHEMETHS from this era directed by master filmmakers/household names George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg respectively.  Whereas this was directed by Peter Hyams....who actually built up a nice filmography himself over the next ten years including Running Scared, Outland, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact.  And this being his breakout success which he also wrote, it has ONE hell of a doozy of a plot....Three astronauts (James Brolin, Sam Waterston, O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on a TRULY historic adventure, THE first manned mission to the planet of Mars!  Except they're not actually going to Mars....they're supposed to stay on Earth and ONLY they are to know this.  Hmmm....it's a massive space program conspiracy lead by the late, great Hal Holbrook who is orchestrating it from NASA.  Fortunately there is ONE brave reporter who is out to uncover the truth and he's played by Elliott Gould. :) And of course don't underestimate the crazy aerial hijinks of a crazy crop-duster pilot played by the late, great Telly Savalas too while you're you're at it. :) Admit to yourself that it sounds intriguing. Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

This sequel to Stanley Kubrick's visionary masterpiece 2001: a Space Odyssey is a frustrating, uneven, but ultimately enjoyable and well-done science fiction film that is more about the need for world peace and space exploration than Kubrick's grappling with the mystery of consciousness and what it means to be human. Not the groundbreaking weirdness of its famous predecessor, but still worth seeing. Starring Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban, Keir Dullea, and Elya Baskin. Written by Arthur C. Clark and Peter Hyams, and directed by Peter Hyams.

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for the April installment of their monthly movie retrospectives. This time they're talking about 2001: A Space Odyssey for its 55th anniversary. 2001: A Space Odyssey is an epic science fiction film directed by Stanley Kubrick, who co-wrote the film with Arthur C. Clarke. It opened in theaters on April 3, 1968. In the film the principal characters, astronaut Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and artificial intelligence HAL 9000 (Douglas Rain), travel to Jupiter in search of extraterrestrial life. Though initial reactions to the film were mixed, it received Oscar nominations for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Art Direction, and won for Best Visual Effects. Popular but expensive, the movie only become profitable upon rerelease. In 2022 a poll of 480 directors voted it the Greatest Film of All Time in Sight & Sound magazine.   Aaron and Josh discuss the plot of the film, its effects, and its slow pace. They also briefly chat about Arthur C. Clarke's book series and the film 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Capping things off is a look at space travel and A.I. today. For more ‘60s cinema, you can listen to Josh and Aaron's podcast on The Birds. For another Kubrick film, listen to their podcast on The Shining.2001: A Space Odyssey is streaming on HBO Max.

"My God! It's full of stars! That's right, the Mikes are taking on the sequel to what is widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, which was directed, written, and filmed by Peter Hyams and starring Roy Scheider, John Lithgow, and Helen Mirren. Join Mike Butler and Mike Field as they talk about how this film went up against in possible odds; not just in box office competition (although it absolutely did), but also in that it would always be judged, unfairly, against the Stanley Kubrick classic, 2001: A Space Odyssey. Field and Butler talk about the fantastic acting from Scheider and crew, the fact that this film has a lot of great story to it and tells a story of science and exploration that most films, even today, do not. They'll also discuss how this film, 16 years later, doesn't hold a candle to 2001 special effects-wise and ponder what could be if they continued the series whose book versions have two more sequels. All in all though the Mikes will hopefully convince you to watch an overlooked sequel to a classic that holds up on its own through story, writing, and theme. Special thanks to the Mike's pal, Greg Antonini, who have been pestering them to cover this movie since before they even started recording the podcast. Since the dawn of cinema, sequels have always been a dicey proposition. As the media is oft to tell us, fans are absolute monsters and barely register as human, and as such, can be fickle and unreasonable with how they receive follow-ups to their favourite properties. Some sequels meet even the most jaded fan expectations, and provide quality and worthy continuations of fantastic starts - think Winter Soldier, Terminator 2, and Wrath of Khan. In other cases, you get movies like Last Jedi, Speed 2, and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, all being served by Howard the Duck in a Miniskirt as he squats over your table and colon-dumps onto your plate. However, once in a long while, you get a sequel that not only manages to reach the level of expectation set upon it by demanding fans, but in many ways surpasses the original source material and becomes legendary in its own right. Empire Strikes Back is an obvious example of this, but in this episode, we get to talk about another absolute gem of sequel legend - 2010: The Year We Make Contact. Strap into your command chair and join Jay and Benny as we blast off into Jupiter orbit, and enjoy one of the best sequels in movie history. 2001 is a tough act to follow because of the whole...you know...absolute artistry and generation-defining storyline. However, 2010 inexplicably knocks it out of the park with a compelling follow-up to the events of the previous film, while adding incredible acting, solid storytelling, and themes of unity and camaraderie against all odds. 2010 is a rare gem in the world of sequels for an obvious yet often overlooked reason - it respects and honours the original material, using it as a springboard to continue a story that makes existing fans happy, while providing an accessible journey to new ones. We wish more studious would take note of this *cough Disney Star Wars cough*. Avoid staring directly at the monolith as we explore such topics as: With two minutes of computer mission review text, the viewer is perfectly brought up to speed on the events of the previous movie. If you never saw 2001, these two minutes would have you perfectly positioned to enjoy the movie. Why don't more sequels do this? Russia and the US are close to an all out war, yet the scientist interactions between both nations are presented with the right amount of intrigue and cooperation. The growing friendship between the two nations' crews is one of the best parts of this movie If you're like Benny, and you have an abnormally strong dislike of women with pronounced chin dimples, you're going to HATE Floyd's wife Dave is a returning character, playing a pivotal role in story development. He is a beloved character that is treated with respect and dignity. Last Jedi is absolute garbage Enough good things cannot be said about the growing relationships between space crews. From Floyd's fatherly comforting of a young Russian officer to John Lithgow's buddy Max, the viewer is treated to enemies slowly becoming friends in a universe that doesn't allow it Dear NASA: We get it. There's clay on Mars. Awesome. How about you get around to launching a drill probe so we can all say hello to the sentient squid race under Europa's icy crust? Pretty please?

This week's interview is with our own co-host Josh Steimle. Josh dives deep into the rebel mindset responsible for his pursuit of learning, change, and challenge. Josh shares how his parents instilled a passion for reading and science fiction, why skating has taught him more about entrepreneurship than anything else, and how he turned down a lucrative offer for his own sanity. This episode will ring true with anyone stuck chasing a career for “money” who wants instead to chase passion, progression and learning.      Highlighted Quotes   “Permission” I feel like so many good things have come into my life because I was willing to take a risk or I was willing to do something that was scary, but I felt like it was the right thing.”   “Advice” Most entrepreneurs understand that nobody understands their business the way that they understand it and it's hard to find advice from anybody else. You kind of just have to figure it out and do your own thing. And that's the same way that skateboarding works... people can give you advice and they can give you tips, but if it's not another skater, or it's not another entrepreneur in the entrepreneurial world. There's just no way to really explain it to them so they understand it and there's no way that they can really get what you're going through in order to be able to give you helpful useful advice    “Rebel”  The rebel attitude that accompanied the skateboard culture also I feel  served me as an entrepreneur... when you're an entrepreneur you're doing things that normal people don't do, because if normal people did it there wouldn't be any opportunity. The definition of an entrepreneur is somebody who seeks out opportunities or reallocates resources from a place of lower opportunity to a place of higher opportunity, which is a fancy way of just saying that entrepreneurs say “Hey,  I can do this”  “I can make money here” or “I can change the world here”... by doing something.   Resources/Mentions:   Hubble Space Telescope James Kickflip 10FT Ledge Jump (instagram) Josh's Dad Voting Pic (Instagram)   Podcast  Episode 59 - Therapist Uncensored  Books The Dark is Rising  Enders Game Foundation Founders Dilemma    Movies  2001 Space Odyssey  2010: The Year We Make Contact  Ender's Game Dune (2021)   TV Foundation    Article 3 Reasons Skateboarders Make The Best Entrepreneurs    Guest Links: Instagram Twitter Linkedin JoshSteimle.com PublishedAuthor.com 7SystemsofInfluence.com   Podcast Links: Instagram: @Hopestrategy  Facebook: @hopestrategy  Twitter: @thehopestrategy Youtube The Hope Strategy

"My God, it's full of stars!" After reading Arthur C. Clarke's sequel to Stanley Kubrick's film, director Peter Hyams was very interested in transforming it into a film. After getting the blessing from Clarke and Kubrick, he set to work. But inevitably, he was fighting an uphill battle – making a sequel to a film that many people consider to be one of the greats. In the end, the film was received well enough and turned a profit at the box office. But how well does it hold up today? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Odyssey series with Hyams' 1984 film 2010. We talk about the struggle with this film and why it is problematic right out of the gate, and why the problems are exacerbated when sitting next to Kubrick's film (even if it does feel closer to Clarke's original vision). We chat about the nature of HAL in this film and debate whether it's okay to have turned ‘him' into a good guy here. We look at Roy Scheider's performance here and struggle with it because of our great love for the man and the films he starred in before this one. And we discuss the special effects throughout this film – largely quite good. It's a frustrating film that hasn't held up well over time, but it still makes for a fascinating discussion. Tune in to this week's show to join the chat. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins!
