Our new correspondent Blayne Alexander is back, and even though she doesn't have an official nickname yet, we are for sure proud Blayniacs! When a beloved young college student is killed, there are a surprising number of suspects: The maintenance man from her building? The guy she was flirting with whose last name is also the creepiest vehicle on the road? Her high school prom date who was obsessed with her and is inserting himself into the case? A troubled teen phrogger? Was it The Running Man (AKA Arnold Schwarzeneger or MC Hammer, or both in it together)? Or was it the ghost of an aquarium fish, out for revenge? Nothing is adding up, and this case goes cold. But there's no case too cold for queen of the pencil metaphors, prosecutor Kelly Siegler from TV's Cold Justice! It's MURDER IN MINOT! Official Description from NBCU: Beloved 18-year-old college student Anita Knutson is found stabbed to death in her apartment; the case takes nearly eighteen years and the undying commitment of friends, family and investigators to reach resolution. College student Anita Knutson is found stabbed to death. The case took years and the unwavering commitment of loved ones and investigators to reach a resolution. Blayne Alexander reports.
The Confessions That Came Too Late They lived together, they argued over an alarm clock, and fifteen years later, one of them is on trial for murder. Anita Knutson was just 18 years old when she was found dead in her bed in Minot, North Dakota. It was June 3, 2007, and the discovery shocked the quiet college town. Anita, a student at Minot State University, had been stabbed twice in the chest. Her apartment showed no signs of forced entry. No valuables were taken. Just a young woman, murdered in her own home—and no one to answer for it. The case went cold fast. With limited evidence and no arrests, it sat dormant for nearly 15 years, until March 2022. That's when the investigation took a sharp turn, thanks in part to the Oxygen TV show Cold Justice. The show had rolled into town looking for answers—and apparently helped point investigators back to someone who'd been close all along: Anita's roommate, Nichole Rice, who was known then as Nichole Thomas. Rice, now 37, was arrested and charged with Anita's murder. She pleaded not guilty. And now, after all these years, her trial is underway. Opening statements began on March 18, 2025. The prosecution told the jury they would lay out clear evidence that Rice killed her roommate in a rage. They argued that the motive was stunningly petty: an argument over an alarm clock that kept going off. According to prosecutors, it was the last straw in a tense living situation, and Rice snapped. But the defense wasn't buying it—and made sure the jury knew it. Rice's attorney, Rick Sand, pushed back hard. He called the theory ridiculous. “Siblings, roommates, they fight. There's issues about an unplugged fish tank, about an alarm clock that wouldn't stop going off,” he told the court. “People like Nichole don't kill their roommates over that kind of stuff. They don't put knives through their sternums.” Sand's strategy was clear: challenge the evidence, point out the lack of it, and call into question the motives of everyone involved—including the Cold Justice team. He suggested the case only reignited because TV cameras came to town, and that investigators were pressured into making an arrest that didn't hold up. But what's turned heads in this trial isn't just the forensic evidence—it's the confessions. Two different people have now taken the stand to say that Nichole Rice told them, years ago, that she killed Anita. First, Kristina Holler. She was a friend of Rice's who testified on Friday, March 21. According to Holler, Rice confessed during a conversation years ago, saying she and Anita had fought and that she stabbed her. Holler said it was over—you guessed it—an alarm clock. She told police back then, she said. Then came William May. He dated Rice briefly and testified that she made a drunken confession at a party in 2008. They were playing video games, sitting on the couch, and someone brought up Anita's murder. According to May, Rice casually said, “I did it. I killed Anita.” He testified that Rice later claimed she didn't remember saying it. May said he called police the next day to report what she'd said. But that's where the story gets murky. Sand pointed out that there are no records of that call. None. And May didn't speak with police again—at least, not until 2022, after Rice was arrested. That gap in time is a big problem for the defense. But so is the lack of solid forensic evidence. On Thursday, forensic scientist Amy Gebhardt testified about the knife believed to be the murder weapon. DNA was found on it—more than three contributors, actually. And because of that, it's impossible to determine exactly whose DNA is on the blade. So while there's DNA, it's inconclusive. There's no direct physical evidence tying Rice to the crime scene. Just the roommate tension, the alarm clock, and two people who say she confessed. The final witness of the week, Michelle Moore, was a classmate of both women. She testified that Anita and Nichole argued sometimes. But when asked directly if she believed Rice was capable of murder? She said no. So now, we've got a trial hanging in the balance. A case frozen in time, now thawed by the heat of confessions and cold-case cameras. Whether the jury believes those late revelations—or sees them as unreliable memories from long-ago parties—will decide the outcome of a case that's haunted Minot for almost two decades. #AnitaKnutson #NicholeRiceTrial #ColdJusticeEffect #TrueCrime Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? When Melissa Howard was found dead in her Crestview, FL home on January 6th, 2006, the case left investigators stumped. There was no shortage of possible suspects with motive to kill her. But there was a near total lack of physical evidence. Melissa would wait over a decade for justice, as her case proved impossible to solve until investigators used technology that wouldn't be developed until long after her murder. In this week's episode, Zoey shares the case of Pamela Shelley, a woman from Ashdown, Arkansas. Pamela was found, shot, in her boyfriend's Texas home in 2001 after getting in an argument with her boyfriend, Ronnie. Pam and her two kids were set to move back to Arkansas with her first husband and the father of her children that same day due to friction in the household between Ronnie and Pam's daughter. While Pam survived the ride to the hospital, she died the next day. Ronnie's family told police that Pam had been suicidal because she loved Ronnie and wanted to stay with him, but she was afraid of her children being taken away from her. They claimed that Pam had taken her own life because she felt torn between two worlds. And the Medical Examiner agreed, and the case was ruled a suicide. However, in 2008 and again in 2012 the case was looked into, and due to the work of the TV Show "Cold Justice", the case was open once more. But before we get into that, Robin's Something Southern this week is teaching us about the prominent river type of the south, the Blackwater River. Also, Zoey was laid off in May and she shares that information with us. This is Bed Crime Stories - a weekly True Crime Podcast where your hosts pour themselves a drink and take turns telling one another the stories that keep them up at night! On this episode of Bed Crime Stories, Charlie recounts a recent episode of Cold Justice that covered the murder of Anita Knutson, 18. She was killed at home, in her bed in 2007. True Crime and comedy... Sounds crazy, we know. We add humor to cope with the harsh reality of the stories we tell and alleviate some of the heaviness for our listeners. No one here at Bed Crime Stories are experts, just lifelong fans of all-things true crime. Steve Spingola (best known for his work on the Jeffrey Dahmer case) has another reason to celebrate -- Cold Justice, a show he guest stars on regularly in hopes of solving cold cases, is celebrating its 100th episode in a special two-parter. Spingola has appeared on the show for years as he works with former Texas prosecutor Kelly Siegler on cold cases (that can sometimes be 30+ years old). Spingola is a wealth of knowledge, from the importance of the increase in technology to the smallest detail that can help piece together a solid circumstantial case. When speaking to him (as a true crime nerd), I couldn't help but get lost in many questions about the process, what they do while filming, and what happens when the cameras stop rolling. Spingola spent much of his afternoon speaking to me about the judicial process and what happens when he begins directing a case. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Ashley Pelletier Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: From Executive Producer Dick Wolf, Tom Thayer and Magical Elves, the true crime investigative series follows veteran prosecutor Kelly Siegler, and her rotating team of seasoned detectives Steve Spingola, Tonya Rider and Abbey Abbondandolo, as they travel to small towns to dig into unsolved homicide cases that have lingered for years without answers or justice for the victims. While working together with local law enforcement, the “Cold Justice” team has successfully helped bring about 49 arrests and 21 convictions. “Cold Justice” is produced by Wolf Entertainment & Magical Elves with Dick Wolf and Tom Thayer serving as Executive Producers for Wolf Entertainment and Casey Kriley, Kelly Siegler, Eric Salat, Scott Patch and Ashley Graybow Stelle serving as Executive Producers for Magical Elves. *Cold Justice is currently airing on Oxygen and is available to stream the next day on Discovery+ Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @SilenceonSet and Instagram @SilenceonSetPod

With the continued advances in DNA technology and growing popularity of ancestry DNA, stories of decades old cold cases finally seeing resolution and long-awaited justice have swept across the nation. For example, who hasn't heard about the identification of the infamous Golden State Killer after decades through ancestral DNA. Join us to learn about another case from right here in Wisconsin, that of Traci Hammerberg, that was finally brought to closure through the wonders of ancestry DNA and an investigative team that refused to give up.
In the Bible, First Corinthians 13:4 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” It's actually a pretty good definition of love—the kind most of us hope to have in our lives someday. And it's a definition you'd expect a man of God to live by. A pastor is called to be an example to his congregation. Not to be perfect, but at least transparent—sincere—and a soft place to fall for anyone who's struggling. But for one congregation in Florida, their leader's charm and charisma was nothing more than a trap. Wife and mother of two, Kathy Bonderson's body was found in a burning car, well past midnight, on October 25th, 1987, in New Rockford, North Dakota. 18-year-old Minot University college student, Anita Knutson, was found stabbed to death in her off-campus apartment in June of 2007. Both murders were investigated, and both ended up as cold cases in North Dakota. Until the state's two-person Cold Case Unit was started in 2005. Investigators started to dig into the suspicious death of Kathy Bonderson first, taking the state's Police Department on a wild ride that culminated in the accusations of a greedy, cheating husband, a suicide, and spanned three Western states over the course of 18 years. Investigators also looked into the murder of innocent Anita Knutson. With the help of friends, family and loved ones, and, perhaps most importantly, the TV True Crime Show, Cold Justice, an arrest was finally made. In 2022, only one month ago, this 15-year-old homicide was solved. These are the stories of Kathryn Jean Bonderson and Anita Knutson, two women whose lives ended much too soon, and two women who waited almost two decades for justice finally to be served.Show Notes:https://trakt.tv/shows/unsolved-mysteries/seasons/14/episodes/129https://trib.com/news/state-and-regional/article_a8b5aeeb-ec0c-581a-aec8-aa7a04c4dfb6.htmlhttps://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/03/21/anita-knutson-murder-arrest-nichole-rice/https://open.spotify.com/episode/6sEEEDkBVGrzF4BkE4KILA

This week's episode is about the homicide of mother Nancy Jo Canode. On March 3, 1981 in St. John’s County, Florida, she made a frantic 911 call for help. Nancy begged the operator for help. She said it was an emergency. Her killer was moving in on her and she knew it. Nancy’s last words were “Oh God.”The call abruptly ended. Daughter Suzanne, 15, came home about 3 p.m. She called out to her mother and received no response. Suzanne climbed the stairs to her mother’s bedroom. She saw her mother’s feet lying on the master bedroom floor. Suzanne called the police, then ran to a neighbor. Authorities arrived to find a horrific scene. Nancy Jo Canode, 39, was found with a rope wrapped around her neck. She had been raped, bitten and stabbed with a knife and ice pick. The murder appeared personal and was done with much violence. The knife was left on her back. It’s been over 40 years since Nancy was brutally murdered. Daughters Shuri Sheppard and Suzanne Speight have spent all these years trying to catch the person who killed their mother. Be sure to listen to Nancy's daughters discuss their mother's unsolved homicide. If you know anything about Nancy's murder, please contact the Crimestoppers tipline at 888-277-TIPS. Toby Ball takes a break from refilling the Clorox shot-ski to talk about HBO's ripped-from-the-2004-headlines docudrama, Bad Education, in which Wolverine and CJ Cregg defraud the Roslyn school district -- and Toby and I really liked it, but did it need a stronger or more singular point of view? Should it have embraced its All The President's American Vandals nature more openly? And what is Janney's accent doing? Later, we went back to 2015 for a rather un-Frontline-y Frontline that tried to dig into the murders of Vietnamese journalists by an anti-Communist kill squad. Why does "Terror In Little Saigon" feel more like a Cold Justice than a Frontline? What should the episode have investigated instead? And how does Young Sheldon's grandfather figure into all of this? Lionsgate is very interested in doing a "John Wick" TV show, and that seems very appealing to us, to give those creative ideas to that entity, because I think in TV you could really expand on what that is, and greater than we could in just a two-hour film.” In case you missed it (you know, if you don’t have cable) “American Crime Story: People v. When many of us think of actor and comedian Bill Cosby, we think of the jovial dad, Cliff Huxtable from the Cosby Show. Over the past year, at least 58 women have come forward alleging that Bill Cosby had drugged and sexually assaulted them at different times and in various locations. Amidst a multitude of allegations from these women over the years, now, Bill Cosby faces criminal charges for allegedly drugging and sexual assaulting former Temple University staffer Andrea Constand back in 2004. In this episode of Lawyer 2 Lawyer, host Bob Ambrogi joins attorney Scott Greenfield, criminal defense attorney out of New York, and attorney Murray Newman, a former prosecutor and criminal defense attorney out of Houston as they take a look at the legal issues surrounding Bill Cosby. We will discuss the allegations, prosecution vs. defense strategy, his arrest, the recent criminal charge of sexual assault, the statute of limitations on sexual assault, the impact on his public image, and what the future holds for Mr. Cosby. For more than 30 years, Scott Greenfield has represented clients charged with crimes or the targets of investigations in state and federal courts across the United States. Scott also writes the Simple Justice blog, a criminal defense blog. Since graduating from the University of Houston Law Center in 1999, Murray Newman has handled criminal cases ranging from driving while intoxicated to capital murder. He served as an assistant district attorney until 2008, leaving the Harris County District Attorney's Office as a felony chief prosecutor. In private practice since 2008, Murray continues to represent clients charged with criminal offenses in the State of Texas. In addition, Murray works as a legal consultant for the TNT television show Cold Justice and author of the well-known blog, Life at the Harris County Criminal Justice Center.
