“If people know what you're doing, they will come out of the woodwork. If the commitment's there and you really want to do it, it's definitely possible.” This episode is sponsored in part by Telecom Consultants, Buzz to the Rescues, and Maddie's Fund. Stacy speaks with Carla Betlem, a professor at Rochester Institute of Technology where she has been performing TNR for nearly 15 years. Carla along with several RIT students came together to establish a campus club, Caring Hearts For RIT Cats, which provides care, comfort, and security to the feral cats on and surrounding RIT's campus. Caring Hearts, which became an official college club in 2019[1], has over 400 student members involved. The club operates as a nonprofit entity and has a board of directors, along with various committees and subcommittees. Carla describes how this club was founded, how its members communicate, and the importance of training others to become leaders. She stresses the importance of educating students about the resources available in caring for their pets, as well as the importance of having them involved in caring for RIT's cats. Carla also provides advice for individuals that would like to begin a similar program at their own university. To learn more about Caring Hearts for RIT Cats, visit their Facebook, Instagram, or website. You can also connect with them through email at caringhearts@rit.edu. Photo: Herblock 1963. CBS Eyes on the World with John Batchelor CBS Audio Network @Batchelorshow Consider that Congress wants its Wars Powers back. Sara Burns, Rochester Institute of Technology https://sarahmburns.com The Politics of War Powers: The Theory and History of Presidential Unilateralism (American Political Thought) Hardcover – November 15, 2019 by Sarah Burns (Author) https://www.amazon.com/dp/0700628738 The Constitution of the United States divides war powers between the executive and legislative branches to guard against ill-advised or unnecessary military action. This division of powers compels both branches to hold each other accountable and work in tandem. And yet, since the Cold War, congressional ambition has waned on this front. Even when Congress does provide initial authorization for larger operations, they do not provide strict parameters or clear end dates. As a result, one president after another has initiated and carried out poorly developed and poorly executed military policy. The Politics of War Powers offers a measured, deeply informed look at how the American constitutional system broke down, how it impacts decision-making today, and how we might find our way out of this unhealthy power division. Sarah Burns starts with a nuanced account of the theoretical and historical development of war powers in the United States. Where discussions of presidential power often lean on the concept of the Lockean Prerogative, Burns locates a more constructive source in Montesquieu. Unlike Locke, Montesquieu combines universal normative prescriptions with an emphasis on tailoring the structure to the unique needs of a society. In doing so, the separation of powers can be customized while maintaining the moderation needed to create a healthy institutional balance. He demonstrates the importance of forcing the branches into dialogue, putting them, as he says, “in a position to resist” each other. Burns's conclusion—after tracing changes through Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration, the Cold War, and the War on Terror—is that presidents now command a dangerous degree of unilateral power. Burns's work ranges across Montesquieu's theory, the debate over the creation of the Constitution, historical precedent, and the current crisis. Through her analysis, both a fuller picture of the alterations to the constitutional system and ideas on how to address the resulting imbalance of power emerge.
On this episode of the podcast, Brent chats with Phil Castleberry, Vice President for University Advancement at the Rochester Institute of Technology. They cover topics like the compounding impact of building strong personal and professional relationships; how being from a military family and moving with regularity shaped Phil to be adaptable to almost any new environment; and what it's been like to onboard remotely in his new VP capacity. Phil also reflects on how he received a full scholarship to complete his undergraduate degree at the University of Central Missouri, but never really knew (nor was taught) where the scholarship money came from until the VP of Development asked if he would be interested in managing the student phonathon program. On this episode, Phil and Brent talk about MGO salaries and whether they are proportional to the revenue that they bring into the university; the importance of portfolio transition upon a gift officer's departure; and how cool it is that Phil has his pilot's license and could fly himself to a donor visit.About PhilPhil Castleberry, a 20-year veteran of higher education advancement and fundraising, was named Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations, now University Advancement, at Rochester Institute of Technology in February 2020. He provides strategic vision and operational leadership for all aspects of the university's development and alumni initiatives, including oversight of a team of more than 100 professionals, as well as direction of a $1 billion blended campaign, Transforming RIT: The Campaign for Greatness, which has raised $765 million to-date.Prior to joining RIT, Phil was Vice President for Institutional Advancement at St. John Fisher College for four years where total giving increased from $3.3 million to $12.3 million annually and unrestricted giving more than tripled during his tenure. Phil also designed and launched “Fisher Forward,” the most ambitious campaign in the college's history with a goal of $75 million. He previously served in a variety of progressively responsible roles at the University of Rochester from 2009-2016, concluding his tenure there as Associate Vice President of University Advancement. Other roles in higher education advancement include service at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Missouri – St. Louis, William Jewell College, and the University of Central Missouri.Castleberry holds a bachelor's degree in political science and speech communication from the University of Central Missouri as well as a master's degree in political science from the University of Missouri — Kansas City.

Carl Chiarenza was a member of the second class to graduate from the newly-established bachelor of fine arts program in photography at Rochester Institute of Technology. His classmates included well-known photographers Bruce Davidson, Kenneth Josephson, Pete Turner, and Jerry Uelsmann. In an interview with LensWork magazine editor Brooks Jensen from 2000, Chiarenza discusses the dual influences of Minor White and Ralph Hattersley, two prominent faculty members at RIT during the mid 1950s: Now in the photo thing, as this program is developing, Hattersley was the person—of the teachers we had Hattersley was the person who was directly involved with putting the program together. Minor came into the program when he moved to Rochester and Eastman House, so he came in part-time. Anyway, as the classes got going over the two-year period, we would be bouncing back and forth between Minor and Ralph. So the wonderful thing about this was that we didn't get stuck with a single track. We were not under Minor White, we were not under Ralph Hattersley. We would go to minor and we would learn the Zone System—and how to stare at a picture for an hour and really digest that picture detail by detail, you might say silver halide by silver halide. At the time, we all sorta thought he was really nuts, I mean having us sit there for an hour looking at these pictures, but again, as we’ve all said in retrospect, that was a major part of our education—what a picture is and how you deal with that, particularly in photography, where photographers generally see a subject or an object and say, “Oh, that’s nice, I’m going to make a picture of that,” whether its people or a lamp or whatever it is, and don’t really think about what’s going on behind it, in front of it, to the left of it, to the right of it, and so on. So we really learned to understand that photography, like any other picture, is made up of everything that’s in it. And everything that’s in it is important. On the other hand we went to Ralph and Ralph would say, ‘Well, what’s in the darkroom trash this morning? Is there anything interesting that we can pull out and start with?’ These would be prints that had stains on them that could be developed further. I know this sounds extreme, but it happened! Or he would take us on field trips to New York. We went to New York and we spent a couple days at LIFE magazine meeting people like Eisenstaedt and Margaret Bourke-White and meeting people and going through the whole building, the labs and meeting the layout people and so on. And we would go back to RIT with negatives that he had gotten for us from LIFE magazine and we experimented with them to see if we could do something different from what LIFE did. Or we went to Chicago and we met the people at ID, Callahan and Siskind, and learned about an entirely different way of teaching photography. We walked into—I guess it was the Mees building or Gropius building, I can’t remember—and as we were walking up toward the photo department, up the stairway, and we heard this terrific jazz going on. We make it up a stairway, up a landing, and there’s Chico Hamilton quartet playing, live, in the middle of this space. It wasn’t a concert, it was just in the middle of the building. So it was experiences like that that really opened us up to all kinds of creative worlds. Source: LensWork Interview (2000)
