On Thursday February 17th, 2022 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will discuss and review the current trend in Fantasy novels involving themes and characters from The Arabian Nights mainly the Jinn which King Solomon imprisoned in his sealed jars. A few weeks ago Poke had been putting together a show dealing with The CITY of BRASS from Burton's version of the Nights, citing it as an inspiration for many classic fantasy adventure stories. But then he discovered that an American Lady author, Shannon Chakraborty, had in fact published a magical novel called The City of Brass in 2017. So he decided to postpone the show until he had read her book. He then discovered another British author Jonathan Stroud who had a series of Jinn fantasies called The Bartimaeus Triology launched in 2003 which he needed to catch up on. And while we are at it we might as well throw in the old Victorian classic Vatheck by William Beckford (1893). So, if you would like to take a ride on a magic carpet, tune in and we'll be off.
Shannon Chakraborty's The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is a journey through magical lands and tempestuous seas with a crew of pirates that you won't soon forget. Chakraborty joins us to talk about creating her unique and vibrant characters, writing about history (and magic), including important themes of identity and religion and more with guest host, Jenna Seery. This episode of Poured Over was hosted by Jenna Seery and mixed by Harry Liang. On the heels of one of the more average fantasy novels I've read recently, I picked up one of the most unique fantasy novels I've ever read. The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty follows the titular character, a 40-year-old mother who is both a pirate and a devout Muslim, as she comes out of retirement for one last job. I spend time detailing the many unique facets of this novel, talk about the pacing, and discuss the role religion played in this book.
Amina Al-Sirafi, the protagonist of Shannon Chakraborty's new novel, commanded the Indian Ocean as one of its most notorious pirates during the 12th century. But when the story kicks off, Al-Sirafi is focused on raising her daughter, trying to live a peaceful life with her pirate days far behind her. The tale pulls Chakraborty's character back to her heyday in the waters – and as the author tells Here & Now's Kalyani Saxena, Al-Sirafi's Islamic faith plays a much bigger role this time around.

Muslim Bookstagram is always on the hunt for authentic Own Voices additions to #MyMuslimShelfSpace - and while we live in an exciting time of witnessing the success of Muslim authors such as S. K. Ali, Reem Faruqi, and Shannon Chakraborty, we should never forget that the stage for unapologetically Muslim fiction was set by other incredible Muslim writers. This episode of the MuslimMatters podcast features an interview with Juwairiah L. Zainab bint Younus was able to track down the author of the classic books "The Jinn in the Clock" and "A Wicked Wazir," sharing her own childhood love of these amazing stories and discovering the rich history behind them! Fans of Muslim fiction won't want to miss this heartwarming interview with one of the most talented Muslim fiction authors of our time.
