The friend of a woman who died from methanol poisoning in Laos is advocating for increased awareness regarding the dangers of bootleg alcohol. British woman Bethany Clarke and her friend Simone White were among a dozen people who fell critically ill after drinking at a hostel in Laos. Ms Clarke told Gary Hardgrave on 4BC Drive, "I think what the best thing would be is to sort of employ a few scare tactics." "I personally remember at school we watched videos that were scaring you about the dangers of drink driving, drunk driving. So I think that's the idea, creating something that's actually going to scare people into thinking a little bit more about what they're putting into their bodies, because obviously we didn't think we were doing anything wrong." "In this day and age, you wouldn't think anything of it. But unfortunately, it is happening. So people do need to really have it on their radar," Ms Clarke continued.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

City Lights presents Eileen Myles, joined by Fanny Howe, Maggie Nelson, Camille Roy, Laurie Weeks, Simone White, Frank Wilderson, and Jillian Weise, celebrating the publication of "Pathetic Literature," edited by Eileen Myles and published by Grove Atlantic. This event was originally broadcast via Zoom and hosted by Peter Maravelis. You can purchase copies of "Pathetic Literature" directly from City Lights here: https://citylights.com/pathetic-lit/ “Literature is pathetic.” So claims Eileen Myles in their bold and bracing introduction to "Pathetic Literature," an exuberant collection of pieces ranging from poetry to drama to prose to something in between, all of which explore those so-called “pathetic” or sensitive feelings around which lives are built and revolutions are incited. From confrontations with suffering, embarrassment, and disquiet, to the comforts and consolations of finding one's familiar double in a poem, "Pathetic Literature" is a swarming taxonomy of ways to think differently and live pathetically on a polarized and fearful planet. For the season premier episode of Artists On Writers | Writers on Artists, artist Lorna Simpson joins poet Simone White to talk about being in the practice of a practice, whether or not there is in fact a language to describe both Black experimental art and Black life, how to protect one's own interiority so that a person can live most fully, and much more. Simpson's work is currently on view as part of the exhibition “The Double: Identity and Difference in Art since 1900” at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. White's most recent book, or, on being the other woman, was published this fall by Duke University Press. This episode of “Artists On Writers | Writers on Artists” is sponsored by the New-York Historical Society. A pioneer of conceptual photography, Lorna Simpson first came to attention in the mid-'80s for her large- scale photograph-and-text works that confront and challenge narrow, conventional views of gender, identity, culture, history and memory. Throughout her career, she has used the camera as a catalyst to comment on the documentary nature of found or staged images. Her works have been exhibited at, and are in the collections of, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and Haus der Kunst, Munich amongst others. Important international exhibitions have included the Hugo Boss Prize at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Documenta XI in Kassel, Germany, and the 56th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. She was awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal in 2019. Simone White earned her BA from Wesleyan University, JD from Harvard Law School, and MFA from the New School. She is the author of the full-length collections House Envy of All the World (Heretical Texts, 2010), Of Being Dispersed (Futurepoem, 2016), and Dear Angel of Death (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2018), as well as the chapbooks Dolly (2008) and Unrest (2013). Her most recent, or, on being the other woman, was published this fall by Duke University Press. White has received fellowships from Cave Canem, a 2017 Whiting Award, and was selected as a New American Poet for the Poetry Society of America. She lives in New York and teaches at the University of Pennsylvania.
In or, on being the other woman (Duke UP, 2022), Simone White considers the dynamics of contemporary black feminist life. Throughout this book-length poem, White writes through a hybrid of poetry, essay, personal narrative, and critical theory, attesting to the narrative complexities of writing and living as a black woman and artist. She considers black social life—from art and motherhood to trap music and love—as unspeakably troubling and reflects on the degree to which it strands and punishes black women. She also explores what constitutes sexual freedom and the rewards and dangers that come with it. White meditates on trap music and the ways artists such as Future and Meek Mill and the sonic waves of the drum machine convey desire and the black experience. Charting the pressures of ordinary black womanhood, White pushes the limits of language, showing how those limits can be the basis for new modes of expression. Joshua Bennett is joined in conversation with Tongo Eisen Martin, Jesse McCarthy, and Simone White to discuss his new book "Being Property Once Myself: Blackness and the End of Man" published by Belknap Press/Harvard University Press. The prize-winning poet Joshua Bennett argues that blackness acts as the caesura between human and nonhuman, man and animal. This event was originally broadcast live via Zoom and hosted by Josiah Luis Alderete. Joshua Bennett is the author of The Sobbing School, winner of the National Poetry Series and a finalist for the NAACP Image Award. He has received grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, and MIT and was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows. He is the Mellon Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Dartmouth College. Tongo Eisen-Martin is the author of Heaven Is All Goodbyes (City Lights Books, 2017) and someone's dead already (Boostrap Press, 2015) and his poetry has been featured in Harper's Magazine and New York Times Magazine. Heaven Is All Goobyes was shortlisted for the Griffin International Poetry Prize and awarded the California Book Award for Poetry, an American Book Award, and a PEN Oakland Book Award. He is also a movement worker and educator whose work in Rikers Island was featured in the New York Times. He has been a faculty member at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University, and his curriculum on extrajudicial killing of Black people, "We Charge Genocide Again!" has been used as an educational and organizing tool throughout the country. He's from San Francisco. Jesse McCarthy is assistant professor jointly appointed in the Department of English and the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. His research is concerned with the intersection between politics and aesthetics in African American literature, postwar or post-45 literary history, and Black Studies. His dissertation The Blue Period: Black Writing in the Early Cold War, 1945 – 1965 argues for a reinterpretation of black literary aesthetics in the early Cold War and for the value of a discrete periodization of that era. He is also interested in modernism, film, poetics and translation. While a graduate student at Princeton he founded a Digital Humanities project based on the Sylvia Beach archives held at Princeton's Firestone Library called Mapping Expatriate Paris. His writing on culture, politics, and literature has appeared in The New York Times Book Review, The Nation, Dissent, The New Republic and n+1. He also serves as an editor at The Point. Simone White is the author of Dear Angel of Death, Of Being Dispersed, and House Envy of All the World and of the poetry chapbooks Unrest and, with Kim Thomas, Dolly. These horoscopes are month-ahead forecasts for each sign for Scorpio Season in 2020. Scorpio Season extends between October 22-November 21, 2020. If you enjoy these horoscopes and would like to explore the energy of Scorpio in 2020 further, you can do so in the Scorpio Season ritual attunement workshop recording. In that workshop I guide you into a felt-sense of Scorpio through its embodied channels and some of its most powerful and intense energetic pathways and offer a breakdown and interpretation of some of the highlights of this month’s astrology in relation to these embodiments. My guest this season, Holland Andrews, is an experimental vocalist, composer, and healer. In the second half of the workshop, Holland guides you into the rich inner dimensions of infinite self-love and offers a simple, yet profoundly healing practice of internal touch through sound and vibration. 50% of all workshop proceeds benefit Radical Rest, a healing-justice pop-up offering free wellness services to BIPOC activists. If you’re looking to make major life shifts or align your work and efforts towards a more equitable, environmentally sustainable future, please join me for Pivot. Shift. Transform - a 3-part embodied astrology intensive where you’ll learn the basics of working with signs, planets, houses and transits. We’ll focus on the major transits of 2020, ‘21, & ‘22 and interpret them in relation to our own charts to divine guidance on how we can best align our plans and efforts with the radical societal reconstruction that is already underway and absolutely essential for a livable future on our planet. This is a pre-recorded online workshop which is suitable for all levels. Access to the recording is available by sliding scale. 30% of all proceeds for this workshop will be donated to Mudbone Grown’s solidarity food shares for Black families. This event is a part of the “GIANT NIGHT: The Poetry Project at 50” platform series. Thought of as the pre-spirit of The Poetry Project, Paul Blackburn gave the first “official” reading of The Poetry Project on September 22, 1966. His poetry, translations, and organization and recording of early downtown readings, exerted a steady and widespread influence across a wide range of aesthetic practices. In his lifetime Blackburn published thirteen books of original poetry as well as five major works of translation. Twelve other books were published posthumously. The Collected Poems of Paul Blackburn (1985) and The Selected Poems of Paul Blackburn (1989) are both available from Persea Books, and a reprint of Proensa: An Anthology of Troubadour Poetry, is due out from New York Review Books in 2016. Join us for this kick-off event in “GIANT NIGHT: The Poetry Project at 50” as we read Blackburn's work. With Kimberly Lyons, Ammiel Alcalay, Simone White, Martha King, Basil King, Jerome Rothenberg, Marcella Durand, Bob Holman, David Henderson, Anne Waldman, Rochelle Owens, George Economou, Mark Weiss, Patricia Spears Jones, Brenda Coultas, Gregg Weatherby, Carlos Blackburn and Joan Blackburn. We will also listen to some tracks from Blackburn's 1966 inaugural Poetry Project reading.

Simone White comes by her musical talent honestly; her grandmother performed in burlesque shows, her grandfather wrote poetry, her mother played folk music and her aunt wrote pop songs. With this kind of pedigree, it is no surprise that White's quirky compositions display the kind of assured quality earned by generations in the arts. Though born in Hawaii and currently residing in California, White's music bears no distinctly American geographical earmarks. Instead, electronic textures blend with hushed guitars to create a prescient sonic palette over which she sings introspective lyrics in a hushed, breathy voice. The effect is vaguely and satisfyingly British, which makes sense given that she is signed to the Honest Jon's Record Company, a record label that is run by the English artist Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz. There also are stylistic nods to artists as disparate as hushed folk hero Nick Drake and boundary-smashing St. Vincent spread across White's four albums, making her music at once modern and timeless - and also making her developing career a respectable contribution to the family trade.
