Patreon.com/thequestionshiphop questionshiphop.com youtube.com/thequestionshiphop Originally broadcast on May 24, 2021. Simply put, Tre Hardson aka Slimkid3 is a legend. Hip hop was forever changed in 1992 when his group the Pharcyde emerged onto the scene with their classic debut album 'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde.' The group brought a decidedly animated and imaginative element to their songwriting and presence on the microphone – and Tre definitely stood out with his distinct melodic voice; you could really even say that a lot of these rappers who sing owe a bit to Slimkid3. The Pharcyde's second album Labcabincalifornia sported a darker sound (and early contributions from the great Jay Dee aka Jay Dilla) that reflected the frustration the group was going through with both the industry – and internally. Tre did one last album with the group (2000's Plain Rap) before embarking on a solo career that also has seen him team up with DJ Nu-Mark from Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, and occasional reunions with various members of his Pharcyde brethren – and today they are back at it (as a trio), touring the world and possibly poised to release new music soon. In this Can't Knock the Shuffle classic, we break down stories behind the following songs: "Groupie Therapy" (Pharcyde 'Labcabincalifornia', 1995) "Trust" (Pharcyde 'Plain Rap', 2000) "King" feat Diamond D and K-Natural ('Slimkid3 & Nu-Mark', 2016) "Life is Love" ('Liberation', 2002) "Pick It Up" feat Dillon Cooper (TRDMRK, 2019) "4 Better or 4 Worse" (Pharcyde 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde', 1992) The Questions Hip-Hop: Instagram Sean Kantrowitz: Instagram Slimkid3: Instagram
This week is a mini-episode where we look back at a Friday night showdown last year on 9-28-2024 on our TikTok and IG. between albums 93 'Till Infinity VS. Bizarre Ride 2: The Pharcyde. The members of Bring The Noise Podcast vote themselves and reveal who the fans had picked as well.
One of hip-hops' most creative and entertaining groups, The Pharcyde, released their classic debut album Bizarre Ride 2 The Pharcyde in 1992. It was an outstanding success, thanks in large part to their smash single Passin' Me By. Rappers Fatlip, Slimkid3, Booty Brown, Imani and producer J-Swift crafted a witty and comical album paired with great beats and rhymes that still rank in the top tier list of rap albums. https://www.tiktok.com/@brandonhetzel996?_t=ZT-8uM9h4rf9Y6&_r=1 https://www.instagram.com/str8_the_clippa?igsh=cTBzNnFhenRkN3Nl&utm_source=qr https://www.facebook.com/share/1QfmJmwwN6/?mibextid=wwXIfr

B. Cox looks back at The Pharcyde's debut classic album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde as it turns 30. In the midst of a genre shift of power over their home base of California, the former dancers turns emcees and producers released their debut album to little fanfare, but would become recognized in the industry for their easy going and humorous style.Produced entirely by group member J-Swift, the group (also made up of members Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Imani) provided audiences of a view of living in Southern California that was noticeably different in tenor and landscape than most of their counterparts in 1992.Using humor, witty banter, clever bars with bravado laced with references of sex, weed and female entanglements catered to an audience seeking an alternative to the party and gangster rap that made West Coast hip-hop popular. The album released two notable singles: the wise-crack song "Ya Mama" and the classic single "Passin' Me By", which has become their more recognizable track to date. While not a commercial success, the album was critically acclaimed and largely credited along Freestyle Fellowship's To Whom It May Concern and Del the Funky Homospaien's I Wish My Brother George Was Here with helping to popularize the West Coast alternative hip-hop scene which helped lead to the success and visibility of later acts such as Hieroglyphics, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples and more.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comSupport The Vault Classic Music Review on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodShow NotesAlbumism: The Pharcyde's "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde" Turns 30 | Anniversary Retrospectivehttps://albumism.com/features/the-pharcyde-debut-album-bizarre-ride-ii-the-pharcyde-album-anniversaryMedium: BackSpin- Pharcyde "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde"https://medium.com/@mediamaven0103/backspin-the-pharcyde-bizarre-ride-ii-the-pharcyde-1992-ca42ce00e88dAnywhere The Dope Go: The Pharcyde: Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde-Throwback Thursday Reviewhttps://www.anywherethedopego.com/the-pharcyde-bizarre-ride-ii-the-pharcyde-throwback-thursday-review%EF%BF%BC%EF%BF%BC/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd
“Oh Shit!”... there's a new episode of Enjoy An Album! You don't need to listen to this one “On The DL”, just “Pack The Pipe” with podcast goodness and smoke a bowl of nonsense chat with “Ya Mama”. The first hip-hop album on the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list gets the E.A.J. treatment from Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Liam Withnail. Fatlip, Imani, Slimkid3 and Bootie Brown teamed up under the tutelage of Reggie Andrews to release this 1992 L.A. alt-rap classic, featuring incredible jazzy production by J-Swift. But does the juvenile humour of thirty years ago hold up in 2021? Join CMB and Liam as they take a bizarre ride to the Enjoy An Album side and talk Rodney King, the Inbetweeners, the Wascals, crack addiction, tripping on acid and Jackass. All this and more on episode 19 of Enjoy An Album.

Slimkid3 was a member of The Pharcyde back in the 90s, bringing us some of the most fun hip-hop at a time when most of the music coming out of New York and LA was so damn serious. Their hits like "Passin’ Me By” and “Runnin’” blew up worldwide, and then everything fell apart for the group. Now Tre is in our studio telling us how he was able to start over and build a career that’s now into its third decade. Today, he’s partners with DJ Nu-Mark in TRDMRK; he’s part of the rock band Backbone, and he’s performing live with his former bandmate under the name Bizarre Ride, as well as tearing up the dance floor as a DJ. A couple secrets to his success: - Just don’t give a fuck. He’ll tell you how things started happening when he learned to stop caring what people thing. - Get lost in the music. Spend time listing to the muse. - Never let someone else define your path. Dig in here and let us know if you dig it, ya dig? BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep 077! Meeks and Doe are taking a well deserved break this week to recharge for the rest of 2016 - but that doesn’t mean the content stops! We have a very special treat this week folks - a guest mix from the one and only DJ @Personify of the Little Big Things Crew! This New-Orleans native who resides in Philly is a beast behind the wheels, no matter the genre. Fellow Little Big Things crew member Case Bloom put us on to Personify via the "Welcome To New Orleans" funk 45 mix he did for Case’s Tucker & Bloom bag company a few years back, and we’ve been hooked ever since. This mix is chock full of joints you know and maybe some you don’t - so don’t delay, press play and always remember we got that #smithsonian #grade! // #download #stream #listen // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #underground #DJ #mix #interview #podcasts #ATL #WORLDWIDE Recorded late June 2016 @ The Bottom, Philadelphia, PA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks @beatlabusa "This Year" - MHz "Gimme That" - Ali-B & Jungle Brothers "The Blessin" - Mood Swingaz "Fakin’ Jax" (Original Mix) - I.N.I. feat. Tre Hardson is "a journalist of the times" who just happens to be a rapper, dancer, musician, and something of a philosopher as well. Best known as one of the founding members of The Pharcyde, his current band is called Bizarre Ride. This conversation covers the long road from South Central Los Angeles to Laurelhurst Park, in Portland, Oregon.

SLIMKID3 (born Tre Hardson) first introduced himself to the world as the soulful, clever vocalist and emcee in the legendary hip-hop quartet The Pharcyde...The group went on to create many classics and eventually split apart. In 2000, SLIMKID3 began to pursue a solo career with his Legend of Phoenix EP, exploring the limits of hip-hop with a full band and live instrumentation. His debut full-length album, Liberation, was released in 2002 through Artist Direct/BMG Records under his given name, Tre Hardson.Since 2009, he has also put his deep knowledge of music and beat production to work as a DJ, co-founding Live & Direct PDX, a monthly party event in Portland, Oregon, featuring live remixing of classic hip-hop favorites.SLIMKID3 stormed 2011 with an arsenal of new singles and inventive remixes, an aggressive release schedule, and a slew of Pharcyde show dates filling up his calendar.
