The search is back on today for two men who remain missing after a deadly boat crash in the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook. One person died and six others were injured in the crash late Monday night. DEEP officials believe speed is a factor. But officials say time of day, lack of life vest use and knowledge of the area could have also played a role in this incident. We spoke in depth about boating safety in Connecticut with Lt. William Simpson who oversees the Bridgeport Police Marine Unit. Image Credit: Getty Images

Episode #588 is another great doubleheader, featuring interviews with William Simpson and Louis Southard! William Simpson is an internationally renowned artist known for his work on Judge Dredd, Batman, Transformers, Vamps, and Indiana Jones. He has recently released VMT from Renegade Arts Entertainment, which is described this way: “A tale of blood, monsters, and those that walk amongst them seeking to help us all.” We discuss his career in the comics industry, what “VMT” actually stands for, and what else he's working on that is not to be missed! Then everything wraps up with my interview with the return of Louis Southard, who is bringing fans a prequel to his Midnight Western Theatre series subtitled, Witch Trial. It's described this way: “Before the Woman in Black, there was only Ortensia Thomas: a young girl in a wild west filled with threats both supernatural and all too human. With a new cast of characters and her black-clad destiny looming over her, witness Ortensia like you've never seen her before!” Louis updates us on all he's working on and that you need to let your local comics shop know you want this new series before the Final Order Cutoff date of Thursday, May 18! Word of warning: This book comes from Scout Comics, who I help out behind the scenes!

Growing up on a ranch, William Simpson was more than familiar with the habits of ranch horses. He never anticipated that wild horses would be so different. After spending extended time with a herd in northern California, he realized that these horses might just be able to play a role in preventing wild fires. Bill joins Russell and Alan to share how his research and innovative ideas resulted in the non-profit organization, Wild Horse Fire Brigade.

Stephanie O'Neill reports that's the hope behind the Wild Horse Fire Brigade, a non-profit program piloted by William Simpson. Under a 1971 Congressional Act, the Bureau of Land Management has the right to round up wild horses on public lands. Oftentimes, those horses are shipped to holding facilities, where they are kept in captivity and separated from their families. William Simpson wants to change that. He wants to deploy the wild horses across public lands, to live and graze — and ultimately, prevent the worst wildfires.
William Simpson uses geometry to distinguish the differences between a horse's hoof and a cow's.

Important Events May 18, 1048 Today is the birthday of the Persian mathematician, astronomer, and poet Omar Khayyam (“Ky-yem”). In 1859, the British writer Edward FitzGerald translated and published Omar’s signature work, The Rubáiyát (“Rue-By-yat”). In The Rubáiyát, Omar wrote some beautiful garden verses: I sometimes think that never blooms so red The rose that grows where some once buried Caesar bled And that every hyacinth the garden grows dropped in her lap from Some once lovely head. Today in Iran, tourists can visit the beautiful mausoleum of Omar Khayyam and the surrounding gardens. And gardeners in zones 4-9 can grow a pretty pink damask rose named Rosa 'Omar Khayyam.' Over on the Missouri Botanical Garden website, they report that, “'Omar Khayyam' ... is reputed to have grown on the tomb of Omar Khayyam in Persia, [and] was brought to England by William Simpson, an Illustrated London News artist, and in 1893 was planted on the grave of Edward Fitzgerald, who translated the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam into English. According to the Modern Roses 12 database of the American Rose Society, it was registered in 1894. It is a small, dense shrub with grayish-green, downy foliage and numerous prickles. Its clear pink, double flowers are 2 in. wide with a small center eye and 26 to 40 petals. Blooming once per season in late spring to early summer, the flowers are moderately fragrant and in groups of 3 to 4. 'Omar Khayyam' grows 2 to 3 ft. tall and wide.” May 18, 1839 Today is the birthday of the American civil engineer, landscape architect, inventor, and plantsman John Yapp Culyer. John was commissioned to work on parks in major cities across America - like Chicago and Pittsburgh. He was the Chief Landscape Engineer of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, which opened to the public in 1867. During his time at Prospect Park, John invented a machine to help relocate large trees. His impressive tree-movers (he had two of them built) moved established trees and placed large specimen trees from nurseries. In February 1870, the Brooklyn Eagle reported that John’s tree-moving machines had relocated 600 trees - a feat in scope that had never been attempted. To aid with pruning old-growth forest trees, John invented the extension ladder. John’s ladders would stand on a platform and extend over fifty feet in the air. The New York Historical Society shares photos of John’s workers on these ladders, and the images are breathtaking - the danger of working on those ladders is so obviously apparent. Unearthed Words “Beef consommé or purée of spring vegetables," she read aloud. "I suppose I'll have the consommé." "You'd choose weak broth over spring vegetables?" "I've never had much of an appetite." "No, just listen: the cook sends for a basket of ripe vegetables from the kitchen gardens- leeks, carrots, young potatoes, vegetable marrow, tomatoes- and simmers them with fresh herbs. When it's all soft, she purées the mixture until it's like silk and finishes it with heavy cream. It's brought to the table in an earthenware dish and ladled over croutons fried in butter. You can taste the entire garden in every spoonful.” ― Lisa Kleypas, a best-selling American author of historical and contemporary romance novels, Devil's Daughter Grow That Garden Library Paper Flowers Cards and Envelopes: The Art of Mary Delany by Princeton Architectural Press “Each exquisite paper flower in this elegant collection blooms with extraordinary detail and color. Eighteenth-century British artist Mary Delany created each piece by cutting and layering tiny pieces of paper on black ink backgrounds. The fine shading and depth are as intricately detailed as a botanical illustration and scientifically accurate as well. Printed on thick, textured paper, the set features sunflowers, rhododendron, cornflower, water lilies, and more. Perfect for any occasion that warrants beauty and sophistication.” You can get a set of Stationery featuring The Art of Mary Delany by Princeton Architectural Press and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $15 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart May 18, 1872 Today is the birthday of the British philosopher, mathematician, pacifist, and author Bertrand Russell. Bertrand won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950 for his work called A History of Western Philosophy (1945). One of Bertrand’s first works was about happiness and how to find it. He wrote, “Anything you're good at contributes to happiness.” Bertrand also wrote: “I've made an odd discovery. Every time I talk to a savant I feel quite sure that happiness is no longer a possibility. Yet when I talk with my gardener, I'm convinced of the opposite.” And “The happiest person I have ever known is my gardener, who each day wages war to protect vegetables and flowers from rabbits.” As for the cure for anxiety, Bertrand once told this story, “I knew a parson who frightened his congregation terribly by telling them that the second coming was very imminent indeed, but they were much consoled when they found that he was planting trees in his garden.” When it came to the natural world, Bertrand recognized the limits of the earth’s natural resources, and he liked to say, "It's co-existence or no existence." It was Bertrand’s study of happiness that led him to recognize the power of hope. He wrote, "Man needs, for his happiness, not only the enjoyment of this or that but hope and enterprise and change." Bertrand hoped that humankind would get smarter about the natural world and our planet. He wrote, “The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.” Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

97 years ago, the residents of Burnley were shocked to the core after one of worst tragedies to befall them occurred on a wintery, cold mid-day on the 21st December 1923. Burnley Corporation Tramcar Number 10, which was being driven by 47 year old, William Norris, had been out in use over in nearby Rosegrove before making its return to Lane Head. It had been a relatively normal morning, and just like most other days, no issues with the tramcar had been reported either prior to leaving the depot or during its use that day. Norris had taken over the tram at around 11.15am at Duke Bar, Burnley before making his way up towards Rosegrove, leaving the Burnley Centre for Harle Syke at 11.55am. Outside, it had been a cold morning with snow and ice patches forming on the roads and Norris was aware of the risks posed to the tramcar and therefore, journeys between the stops had taken a little longer than normal due to the poor travelling conditions. Also out that day was 37 year old, Charles Lofthouse, a lorry driver working on behalf of haulage contractors, Messrs. John Stanworth and Bros, and he himself had been having some issues with the icy conditions, also at times being delayed visiting the mills he was delivering too, such as Spen Brook Mill which was further afield over at Newchurch-in-Pendle. Approaching from the direction of Harle Syke, he was driving a wagon that was carrying a load of cloth weighing roughly 5 tons as he turned off Marsden Road and onto the incline of Briercliffe Road. It was just after noon and the area was becoming busy due to some children from nearby schools making their way to the stops to await the arrival of the tramcar. Making its way slowly up Briercliffe Road and towards the junction leading onto Marsden Road, William Norris slowed the tram down as it approached what was known as the ‘roll over'. Coming in the opposite direction, Charles Lofthouse was making his way down the incline on the opposite side of the road. Knowing how poor the road conditions where, Lofthouse was intermittently pressing down on the breaks, trying to keep his wagon from gaining speed, but as the wagon and the tramcar came within a few feet of each other, the rear of the wagon began to waver. Panicking, Lofthouse pressed down harder on the breaks but it was too late. The wagon began to veer from side-to-side. Out of control, it collied with the tram, smashing into the cabin windows on the drivers right hand side. Glass shattered onto several of the passengers and a metal side bar buckled with the impact. Six bundles of cloth where flung from the wagon's flatbed as the vehicle shunted forwards several feet before coming to a standstill, with one front wheel mounting a footpath and the other resting next to the kerb. The impact was so strong that it had managed to push the tram backwards which forced it to slowly roll back down the tracks. Two of the passengers on board where those of Jennie Eastwood and Gracie Whittaker, both of whom were travelling on the lower deck. Immediately after the collision, Gracie shouted over to Jennie, “Come along, Jenny!” but Jennie replied back, “No, I'm frightened!” Norris then shouted to conductor, William Simpson, to, “Look after that child!”.

The Roy Green Show Podcast - Earlier this week in court in Saskatchewan, Jaskarit Singh Sidhu pleaded guilty to all 29 charges related to the horrific crash between his B-train semi-truck and a bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team. The families of all who lost their lives or were injured in the collision will now be spared a trial, which Sidhu's lawyer suggests is what Sidhu wanted. Roy talks to Scott Thomas, a father who lost his son in the crash. Later, Roy asks Scott Newark what sentence might Jaskarit Singh Sidhu expect, and how much influence will Victims' Impact Statements might have on the sentencing? Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said nothing of significance about Canada's oil industry and energy sector, while in Regina earlier in the week. He also said nothing reassuring to foreign investors who have written to him, urging him to support the oil sands. All the while, there remains the issue of the rights of First Nations, regarding pipeline construction and natural resources development. Our guest argues that the planned convoy of trucks from Red Deer, Alberta, to Ottawa, to deliver a noisy protest against federal policies and legislation placed in the way of pipelines is the wrong approach. Roy speaks with Ken Coates, to find out why he believes there should instead be a massive convoy of tanker trucks, filled to the brim with oil, making their way to Alberta and deliver that oil to Vancouver. Canada granted asylum to a Saudi teen who fled alleged family abuse. The teen's claim is she is being abused by her family and if she had been forced to return, she would have been killed. The UN declared Rahaf al-Qunun a refugee and requested Australia take her in, then the UN withdrew its request of Australia and now she is in Canada. What is the story here? Guests: Scott Thomas, Father of Evan Thomas, who played for the Humboldt Broncos Scott Newark, former Alberta Crown prosecutor, professor at SFU, former senior policy advisor to a federal Minister for Public Safety, former executive director for the Canadian Police Association Ken Coates, Canada Research Chair in Regional Innovation, Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Saskatchewan. Bill Simpson, Contributor to EnergyNow, teaches pipeline codes and regulations for the North American Standards Assessment Corp. Richard Kurland, Immigration lawyer in Vancouver. William Simpson on drug disposal solutions ~ "A lot of people are pulling together to try to find some things that work. The sweet spot of this will be finding a combination of solutions. There's no silver bullet here that's going to help us from an epidemic perspective. . . We need to find the solutions that work. . . DisposeRx is 10 to 30 seconds . . . " Williams Simpson, Director and President, DisposeRx William Simpson: In ten to thirty seconds I'm breaking the chain of abuse, and that's brilliant. Brian Wilson: As the Director and President of DisposeRx William Simpson is passionate about his product. He's also passionate about his team, about preventing addiction, and about educating people on the simplest ways to dispose of their medications. He sat down to share his passion and to talk about a certain kind of medication that people don't often think of as being dangerous. Brian Wilson: How did you come to be associated with this project? How and Why William Simpson Signed on With DisposeRx William Simpson I was very lucky. I got introduced to Dr. John Holiday. Met here in D.C. I was up for a different meeting, and I was told I got to meet this guy. He's got a really interesting ideas - met at a hotel - and told me a great story and an unbelievable idea of how he came up with the idea, the importance of disposal, the importance of doing it from the way that it was, and got me hooked on the idea of site of use, which is, in our opinion, the vial which the medication is dispensed. From that point, started to do research and looked at how important this topic was when you look at medication management, and you look at us as consumers of what we do and the amount of medication that's actually left in our medicine cabinets. About 40% of us have unused medication. Over 600 million prescriptions go unused a year, sitting in our medicine cabinets, so you've got about 125 million households and about 600 million vials of unused medication. Brian Wilson: Families are now coming to understand that having those drugs in the medicine cabinet is such a danger. Unused or Expired Medications Left in Medicine Cabinet can be Diverted for Misuse William Simpson It really is. From a health perspective, from a financial perspective, the value is having medicines that we're on therapy with. And with all the complications of understanding which medications we're supposed to be taking, which medications we're not supposed to be taking, you don't need to have the complexity of adding additional medications to that mix. From that perspective and the dangers of leaving medications unused, not just from a standpoint of opioids, but there's a litany of other medications that are dangerous to leave that can be diverted for misuse. Even think about things like antibiotics. If you think about becoming resistant to antibiotics, and we've all not taken our antibiotics correctly, and we all do misuse medications at times. To do this in the right way and have something when you think about medication management and how we should manage our own, having a disposal mechanism that we can use as consumers at home is very simple. Brian Wilson: The miracle of modern pharmacology is that we have these amazing drugs that can help us. When we have the right symptoms, we get the right drug, we get better. But our responsibility with that drug does not end when we start to feel better. We have another responsibility. That's to make sure it's disposed of properly. Responsibility to Manage AND Properly Dispose of Medications William Simpson Correct. I'm not a doctor, so I don't want to ever tie my doctors' hands of what they can and cannot prescribe to me. That is their practice. That is what they need to know and do.
