It is a paradoxical and deeply overdetermined text. This troubled young woman was a patient of Breuer's, not Freud's. The prose is exclusively Breuer's, and the approach described reflects his unwavering commitment to hypnosis, the cathartic method, and an associationist model of the mind. But this famous case can also rightly be seen as the beginning of psychoanalysis; indeed, Anna O. herself coined the phrase “the talking cure.” Yet even as the case of Anna O. would come to serve as a kind of skeleton key for unlocking Freud's subsequent sensitivities to listening, transference, and the layered temporalities of psychic traumas, her story would also become an object of mischaracterization and myth-making for Freud and others. Abby, Patrick, and Dan thus begin by addressing the case history as a broader genre while establishing some working distinctions between “Anna O.” as a character in Breuer's text, the real-life Bertha Pappenheim (the person behind the pseudonym), and the subsequent legend of Anna O. as an arch-hysteric whose distress culminated in a (fictious) phantom pregnancy. They walk through Breuer's narrative on its own terms, tackling Anna O.'s many symptoms, especially those involving her intermingling of silence and speech in multiple languages, and the pivotal scene that, per Breuer, represented a breakthrough in the treatment. The questions this all raises – about the limits of knowledge, the contingencies of suffering, and what it means to be healed – set up the next episode, about the story behind the story, and the remarkable biography of Bertha Pappenheim herself. Have you noticed that Freud is back? Got questions about psychoanalysis? Or maybe you've traversed the fantasy and lived to tell the tale? Leave us a voicemail! In Ep. 162 of Earned, CreatorIQ CMO Brit Starr sits down with Emily Hare, Global Influencer Lead and Anna O'Mahony, Global Lead, Content and Innovation at Publicis. To start, we dive into the transformative landscape of creator marketing and influencer strategies. As we chart the course for 2025, marked by significant agency consolidations and acquisitions, Anna and Emily reveal the pivotal role of creators in redefining brand strategies. The duo highlights the necessity of establishing a "center of excellence" in content creation, merging storytelling with journalism to craft narratives that resonate on both global and local scales. We explore the fusion of technology and creativity and examine how agencies are transitioning into comprehensive technology partners, emphasizing a content-focused approach in influencer marketing. Switching gears, Emily and Anna underscore the importance of understanding audience dynamics and maintaining brand consistency while engaging localized influencers. To close the show, the duo also offers insights into the evolving nature of creator partnerships, stressing fair pricing, long-term relationships, and the significance of dynamic playbooks that adapt to market shifts. In this episode, you'll learn: The role of creator marketing is shifting, and brands are rethinking how they collaborate. While influencers can do it all, the real question is where they create the most impact.  Agencies are evolving alongside brands, integrating influencer marketing more deeply into media strategies. The industry is seeing more consolidation, technology adoption, and a shift toward content-first approaches—where the value lies in the work itself, not just the creator's following. Standardizing creator compensation remains a challenge, but brands are getting smarter. With better benchmarks and long-term partnerships, companies are moving toward sustainable, mutually beneficial collaborations.

Anna O by Matthew Blake. A psychological thriller in the vein of things like Gone Girl- Anna O is found unconscious next to the bodies of her murdered friends and it's believed she killed them while sleepwalking. She enters a state known as “resignation syndrome” and stays asleep for the next four years, which is obviously of interest to both the medical world, the police and the victims' families. The government needs her conscious to stand trial and ask a guy who's both a forensic psychologist and sleep specialist to wake her up. It's an extremely risky process as it turns out that before this event happened, Anna was investigating a possible connection between some murders and a government entity who, if they're implicated, might just add an extremely dangerous dimension to this whole affair. It's the kind of book that is likely to be picked up by a lot of readers and spark a lot of debate.  The Wartime Bookclub by Kate Thompson. Set on the Channel Island of Jersey during the German Occupation in WW2, in a place where the Nazis are firmly in control, the small population finds ways to rebel and show resistance. The library becomes the centre of town for many, with young Grace making sure that books and reading are still available and, despite an increasing number of banned books making the Nazis' list, establishes a bookclub which helps protect the heart of the community. Her friend Bea works for the postal service where she manages to intercept letters sent by would be collaborators to the authorities. Against a background of ordinary people trying to get on with their lives in such awful circumstances, and based on real historical events, this is a gentle insight into an extraordinary time.  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Her mission is threefold: (1) provide a loving and safe forever home for farm animals in need, (2) serve as an example for others who want to start a small animal rescue in their community with little-to-no funding, and (3) educate the community through events and social media about the plight of pigs who suffer the consequences of the breeding and food industries. Since she started the sanctuary over eight years ago, Anna continues to carry out her mission by fostering several community partnerships. In addition to the healthy home-cooked food that she prepares for the animals, Anna receives food donations from local grocery co-ops, garden centers, breweries, and restaurants. She works with students in the UNC School of Journalism to create projects that inform and educate the public about factory farming and the need for more microsanctuaries. She also partners with a UNC animal rights organization called Vegans for Peace to expose the community to ethical food choices that promote good health, a safe environment, and respect for animals. Anna works a full-time job as a technical writer in corporate America to pay for expenses at the sanctuary, but she also welcomes donations on her website to help fund her important mission. She's also using her writing skills to create a children's book about the animals and all their whimsical shenanigans at the farm. Anna gives tours of the sanctuary on the weekends and welcomes volunteers throughout the week. You can learn more about Anna in her blog.

Repressed Memories: Can You Forget About Trauma?

Therapy in a Nutshell

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2022 14:51

The idea of repressed memories goes all the way back to Freud, through the 90's when therapists accidentally implanted people with false memories, through the courtrooms, and into today where the idea of repressed memories is still popular among lay people and controversial among therapists and researchers. So today you'll learn three skills for better understanding lost memories, aka dissociative amnesia or repressed memories (or at least my opinion about it). The idea of repressed memories goes all the way back to Freud, one of his first patients, Anna O had all sorts of unexplained physical symptoms, when she began talking with her doctor about her life, previously forgotten memories of trauma came back and as she talked about them, her physical symptoms went away. Freud developed the concept of repression, that current symptoms are all related to something that happened in the past, that we repress the memories to protect ourselves, and that we must analyze our psyche in order to uncover it, integrate it and then be freed from it. So that's where the whole process of psychoanalysis came from, the idea of patients laying on a couch, talking about their childhood. But this concept of repressed memories has become very controversial, because of the way memory works. Most people assume that memory is like a video, your memory records things as they actually happened and stores those memories away, permanently. But memory doesn't work like that, memories are highly influenced by our biases and how we're feeling during or after an event. Even Freud learned that many of the things that his patients “remembered” weren't actual events. Memories can be altered, implanted, influenced, and straight up created under suggestion. Lot's of laboratory experiments have demonstrated that our memories are terribly fickle. If you want to see for yourself how this can work, watch this YouTube video “Take This Test and Experience How False Memories Are Made”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5sk504Yc94 After I filmed this video on repressed memories and dissociative amnesia, the NYT published a very relevant article and two strong opinions on it: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/27/opinion/recovered-memory-therapy-mental-health.html https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/29/opinion/letters/mental-health.html Looking for affordable online counseling? Today's conversation, with two of those good people, focuses on a common issue for clinicians in referring out clients. If you are looking to do referrals in a better way, this session will give you valuable information. Join us to learn more! Our Featured Guests Anna O'Brien  Jim Pasquarella Anna O'Brien and Jim Pasquarella live and work locally in the Philly area as a clinician and commercial real estate developer, respectively.
