Today, we're venturing into a topic that many of us might not think about — parasite and worm infections. These unseen invaders can wreak havoc on your health, yet often go unnoticed for a long time. And, despite all the supplements and peptide therapies we might be using to optimize our health, we may still be missing something very important: a potential parasite or worm infection. In this episode, we'll explore the signs and symptoms of these infections, how you can acquire them, and why we should consider them even if we're doing everything "right" in terms of diet and wellness. Let's get into it! First things first—what are parasites and worms, and how are they different?. A parasite is any organism that lives on or inside another organism, known as a host, and benefits at the host's expense. Parasites can be microscopic or visible to the naked eye. Parasites can take many forms, including: Protozoa (single-celled organisms like Plasmodium that causes malaria) Helminths (worms like roundworms, tapeworms, and flatworms) Ectoparasites (organisms like fleas, lice, or ticks that live on the host's skin or surface). They usually don't infect other parts of your body. When people refer to worm infections, they are typically talking about helminth infections. Helminths are a specific type of parasite, and they are multicellular organisms that can be categorized into three main types: Roundworms (e.g., hookworms, pinworms, and threadworms) Tapeworms Flukes (flatworms) So, all worm infections are parasitic, but not all parasites are worms. What are the symptoms of parasitic infections? So, how can you tell if you have a parasite/protozoa or a worm infection? Let's talk about signs and symptoms. Signs of a parasite infection can be a bit tricky because they often mimic other illnesses or conditions. You might experience: Diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus) Stomach cramps or bloating Fatigue Unexplained weight loss Skin rashes or itching Nausea or vomiting Fever Visible worms in stools or around the anus Itchy anus (especially with pinworm infections) Coughing or chest pain (in the case of certain lung-dwelling worms) Parasites can also affect your mood and mental health, causing things like anxiety or brain fog due to the toxins they release in your body. While some worm infections can be obvious, others may linger for years without being detected, causing slow, gradual damage to the body. How do you get parasitic infections? So, how do we acquire these infections? There are several ways you can pick up a parasite or worm, and it often depends on where you live, what you eat, and what activities you engage in. Let's break it down: Traveling: Traveling to areas with poor sanitation increases the risk of contracting Giardia and Cryptosporidium, two protozoan parasites commonly found in contaminated water or food. These parasites can lead to traveler's diarrhea, causing symptoms like severe stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and frequent watery diarrhea. In some cases, infections can lead to dehydration and fatigue, making it important to take precautions like drinking bottled water and avoiding undercooked food while traveling. Eating undercooked meat or fish: Undercooked pork or fish can harbor parasitic larvae, such as Trichinella in pork and Anisakis (Anne-e-sakis) in fish. When consumed, these parasites can survive in the digestive system and begin to infect the body. For example, Trichinella can cause trichinosis, leading to symptoms like muscle pain and fever, while Anisakis can cause abdominal pain and nausea. Properly cooking these meats to safe temperatures can kill the parasites and prevent infection. Contaminated Soil: Certain parasites, like hookworms, can enter your body through small breaks or pores in the skin if you walk barefoot on contaminated soil. Areas where you are most likely to encounter hookworms in soil include Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America (especially Central and South America), Caribbean Islands, and Southern United States (especially in areas with poor sanitation). Insects: Mosquitoes and other insects can transmit diseases caused by parasites, such as Plasmodium, the parasite responsible for malaria. Similarly, ticks can carry parasites like Babesia (buh-bee-zee-ah), which causes babesiosis (buh-bee-zee-OH-sis) Close contact: Some parasites are spread through human-to-human contact, especially in crowded or unsanitary conditions (e.g., schools, daycares, campgrounds, public restrooms, and nursing homes). For example, pinworms can be contracted by anyone, though they are most often seen in children. They are highly contagious, and you can acquire them through contact with contaminated surfaces or even from sharing bedding. How are parasitic infections diagnosed? Healthcare providers look for the parasites themselves or signs of them, such as their eggs, in your body fluids or tissues. To check for parasites, your provider might take samples from different areas, including: Your stool Blood Skin or any affected tissue Phlegm (sputum) Fluid around your brain and spinal cord (CNS fluid) In some cases, your provider might also use imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans to help diagnose a parasitic infection, depending on what symptoms you're experiencing. Now, this all ties into a bigger picture. Many people are investing heavily in their health these days—through supplements, peptide therapies, and cutting-edge wellness routines. And while these are all beneficial, they can't always protect us from hidden invaders like parasites and worms. What's more, many of the symptoms of a parasite or worm infection can mimic other conditions, and because we often don't think about these infections, they can go undiagnosed for years. If you're dealing with ongoing digestive issues, fatigue, skin problems, or even unexplained brain fog, it might be time to consider that a parasite or worm infection could be behind it—especially if you've recently traveled. What an absolute mess our waters are in. Drinking water regulator Taumata Arowai has put 27 councils on notice to have a plan and funds locked in to fix their drinking water supplies by June of next year. I was actually surprised that so many councils still have issues with their drinking water. Still haven't put in barriers to protect against the cryptosporidium and guardia that can be spread through drinking water supplies, especially given the Campylobacter outbreak in Hastings in August 2016. More than 5000 people were violently ill and the outbreak has been linked to three deaths. So I would have thought that any Council that didn't have treatment in place would have made it a priority to get those barriers put in to prevent their people getting contaminated, getting sick from contaminated drinking water. But no, here we are in 2023, with a cryptosporidium outbreak in Queenstown. Since 2016, we've also had issues with drinking water in east Otago, although that was lead contamination not Protozoa which is the all-encompassing name for the bugs. We've had issues with wastewater run off again in Queenstown. The Council sought permission in 2018 for untreated wastewater, sewage basically, to continue being pumped into the lakes and rivers in Queenstown for the next 35 years. Those beautiful pristine lakes getting pumped full of literal crap. We've got issues in Wellington with wastewater going into the harbour. We've got people in Inner city Auckland being issued drinking water and dealing with sewage bubble ups as engineers try to fix a huge sinkhole in Parnell. There are other examples. There is an absolute urgent need to overhaul and upgrade our three water systems, hence what the Labour Government was trying to do with its Three Waters. But they made an absolute hash of it. So Taumata Arowai has put the councils yet to do the necessary work on notice. Queenstown Mayor Glyn Lewers was on Early Edition this morning. He believes water regulator Taumata Arowai is undermining the very industry they're trying to regulate, and the costs will be passed on to ratepayers. The bit that concerns me is I think the regulators are probably undermining the industry they're trying to regulate, that's the fear I've got. So what's going to happen is they're all competing against each other now against the scarce resource, and that's the industry resource and also the supply resource. So you can just imagine the consultancy rates and the supply rates are only going go one way and it's up. It just gets passed straight on the ratepayers, so ratepayers can expect a fair increase in rates, I'd suggest. Yeah again, I don't quite follow the reasoning. So Queenstown knows they haven't had a barrier to protect the drinking water for years. They know they've got problems with their wastewater pumping out into the lakes. The other 26 councils presumably know that they have no treatment in place to protect their drinking water. The Campylobacter outbreak in Hastings was in August 2016, so here we are seven years later and now all of a sudden saying, oh man, we're going to have to really scramble for resource. Well, if you'd pulled your finger out and got the job done and prioritised it, you wouldn't all be competing at the same time, would you? So it's no good pointing the didgeridoo at Taumata Arowai and saying, oh, now you're forced us into this position and now we're going to have to compete for a scarce resource. There wouldn't be a scarce resource if you had used the seven intervening years between when there'd been a Campylobacter outbreak that made so many people so very, very ill to do something. Seven years later what have you been doing? You leave it till you run the risk of prosecution. You find yourself competing with the same consultants, the same equipment. The price goes up. That's on you. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Twenty-seven councils have been given until June 30th, 2024 to produce funded plans for installing protozoa barriers on water supplies. Without them, hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders could be at risk of bugs such as cryptosporidium. Christchurch City Council has the biggest potential impact - with more than 168,000 residents relying on two non-compliant supplies. The Council declined RNZ's interview requests, as did Waimakariri and Taupō councils, which could affect 29,000 and 8000 people respectively. Taumata Arowai head of regulatory Steve Taylor spoke to Guyon Espiner.
Several councils and government ministries could be facing bills in the hundreds of thousands to fit essential filters to their drinking water supplies in the wake of Queenstown's cryptosporidium gastro outbreak. There are 60 confirmed cases of the parasite induced gastro, that can cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and vomiting. The national water regulator, Taumata Arowai, has issued 150 compliance notices requiring councils and others to install UV filters to protect the water from Protozoa, an organism that can cause of raft of nasty health issues. The cause of Queenstown's crypto outbreak has yet to be indentified but it's been revealed some of the networks that supply the town with water are not fitted with the compulsary filter. Steve Taylor from the national water regulator, Taumata Arowai speaks to Lisa Owen. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6338287340112

Could the root cause of your health concerns be parasites? On this episode, Jared talks to Dr. Todd Watts, co-founder of CellCore Biosciences. Dr. Todd shares his health journey and what led him to develop CellCore's Roadmap to Health using carbon technology to help others eliminate parasites, Lyme, mold, fungal infections, and to reduce the overall toxic burden on the body. You'll learn how parasites can absorb and hold on to toxins which may explain recurrent and chronic illnesses. You'll also learn about the drainage funnel and how the body's natural detox pathways have to be open in order to detoxify systemically. Did you know there's a good chance you're unknowingly sharing your body with parasites? Sorry to break it to you, but most people play host to those nasty little critters. Parasites can cause a range of symptoms beyond gastrointestinal distress. The two main types of intestinal parasites are helminths, which are multi-cell parasitic worms, and protozoa, which are microscopic, single-cell parasites. Protozoa are harder to detect because they are invisible to the naked eye and may not cause immediate symptoms. Parasite infection can occur through a variety of means, including swimming in contaminated water, consuming unwashed produce or undercooked seafood, caring for others, outdoor activities, and drinking contaminated water. Symptoms of a parasite can vary depending on the type of parasite but often include gastrointestinal distress, weight loss, chronic fatigue, anemia, joint pain, bruxism, and fevers. Intestinal parasites can also be a trigger for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. So they're a pretty serious problem, difficult to detect and even more difficult to eradicate. My guest on this podcast Chervin Jafarieh has developed an incredible solution for parasites called ParaX by Cymbiotika (use code BEN to save 15%). Though in the past, I've mostly recommended a biofilm disruptor and oil of oregano combinations, this new formulation beats that, hands down. It is one of the most impressive parasite eradication protocols I've ever come across. ParaX is a diverse and comprehensive approach to balancing the gut microbiome, enhancing detox pathways, fortifying the immune system, and providing whole-body wellness. Encapsulated within powerful ozonated, oxygen-infused oils, ParaX utilizes vitamins, minerals, standardized herbal extracts, fatty acids, and phenols. The formula was designed by Chervin with the intention to deliver optimal results (use code BEN to save 15%). We all as humans are valuable! You have value, I have value…even those we have differing opinions from have value. Our tribalistic society has us now dehumanizing and devaluing people that we have different ideas and opinions from. We are all individuals with individual thoughts, feelings, and experiences. WE ARE NOT BORG! We are all individual points of attention, traveling and gaining experiences all vastly different from one another, and that has value. It's been three years since the last season of Netflix's Stranger Things. Now with the 4th season upon us it must be time for a new mix - Stranger Synths 2022. Similar to previous version of Stranger Synths, this takes the retro vibe of the show's soundtrack and collects tracks that sound like they would fit perfectly in the TV series. I wasn't planning on doing a mix this time around until I stumbled on the opening track Cybernaut by Jonny Fallout. The track can be found on a compilation from Triplicate Records called "Protozoa." As soon as I heard the track I was hit with a great Stranger Things vibe so I knew I had to gather more tracks and put together another mix. I ended up going back to Triplicate Records three more times for this mix, using tracks from Hverheij, BVSMV, and Willebrant. Check the links below for these artists' album and bandcamp pages. It's been a while, but I'm back for at least a few episodes to talk about enteric protozoans - single celled critters that live in the guts, and may or may not be a problem. First things first- Coccidia. I managed to get a little long winded here talking about these guys and options for treating them when you may have a problem.
