Last month Spanish-language broadcaster, Univision, launched two interactive/social TV apps: the "Conecta" app, which is designed to enhance its music-based reality show, "La Banda"; and the "UniNovelas" app, which is targeted at viewers of its popular "telenovelas" (soap operas). Ellen Jovin is a grammar freak, the creator of the website "Words & Worlds of New York," and a founder and principal of Syntaxis, a communication skills training firm based in New York City. She has a B.A. in German from Harvard and an M.A. in comparative literature from UCLA. Ellen can often be found walking or running around the city doing language lessons on her phone, a long-term habit that ultimately led to her joining the accomplished English polyglots Richard Simcott and Alex Rawlings to organize the first Polyglot Conference ever in North America.On October 10 and 11, hundreds of sometimes shockingly multilingual people will descend on the SVA Theatre in Manhattan for two days of language talks and linguistic camaraderie.
