This week's scripture reading came from John 6:1-21. Tabgha, on the slopes of the Mount of Beatitudes just off the shores of the Sea of Galilee, is the site of several significant events in the life of Jesus. There stands a modern church, which protects the remains of a 4th-century AD mosaic that depicts the bread loaves and two fish that Jesus multiplied to feed the 5,000. Under the church's altar is a rock that is believed to be the rock on which Jesus laid the loaves and fish while blessing them. The special mosaic can be seen in the photo on the bulletin cover.

"WHERE'S THE 5th LOAF?" Kids Ministry Coffee Break 40: An ancient understanding of one of Jesus' miracles provides us with the awareness of the sacredness of our work as ministers. I spent a couple of weeks in Israel as a part of my seminary education some years back. That trip continues to bear fruit as I reflect upon what I saw as I stood in areas where people I've come to know of so well once walked, lived, and changed the world. One of those places was called Tabgha. You probably haven't heard of Tabgha, but you HAVE heard of what Tabgha is famous for—the feeding of the 5,000. The only miracle or sign of Jesus which is featured in all 4 Gospel accounts is the feeding of the 5,000. We could dive into a number of points from this story to unpack a plethora of meanings and symbols. Reclining, sitting in rows, shepherd language, king language, the symbol of bread, to feeding, among many others. BUT…I want to share something from the 4th century. Not too many years ago, they unearthed a church from the 4th century which stands upon the traditional site of the feeding miracle. The site is centered on a rock. This large rock is the traditional place where Jesus took the 5 loaves and 2 fish and blessed them before instructing the disciples to start giving food to the crowds. That rock emerges from the floor in the ancient church. The ancient church was eventually covered over by a newer church which you can go visit today. That more ancient church has remnants which have been uncovered and preserved. One of those remnants is a mosaic floor filled with images. The image of particular interest for our break is located just a few feet in front of the famous rock of blessing. The image features a basket with loaves of bread located between two fish. Now…the weird thing is…there are only 4 loaves in the basket. So…naturally…my question was… where is the 5th loaf? The mosaic revealed an ancient understanding of the story and Holy Communion. You see, the rock protrudes from the ground just below the altar. Upon the altar sits a cup and a loaf of bread. The ancient understanding of Tabgha is that we take of the one loaf of bread, understood as Jesus' body, as a continuation of that original miraculous meal. Jesus instructed the disciples to give the people something to eat. They, like us, struggled to understand how that was possible. Jesus blessed that humble food offering upon that blessed rock…and then gave them to the disciples to give to the people. They did give them to the people and, you know the story, everyone received enough and there were 12 baskets left over (another symbol for another time). Today, as the people of Tabgha tell the story, when we receive communion at church, we are receiving a continuation of that original miracle. And…as disciples…we are honored to share that meal with everyone around us. Jesus is still feeding us with everything we need…and enough for everyone else too (which is kind of what the baskets are all about) So…as you prepare yourself for ministry today As you plan the week As you study and pray and arrange for volunteers As you communicate As you await the arrival of students to receive what you have prepared, just know…that you are still sharing that original meal in the way you offer wisdom, care, guidance, love, acceptance, truth, and…food. You are a part of the 5th loaf. So take a deep breath and remember how sacred your work is. Remember what an honor it is to share with others. Go and feed them, friends…and enjoy every moment. Message brought to you be Rev. Joseph Sanford of Sanford Curriculum (Student ministry resources available on The Sunday School Store written by he and Lauren Sanford). Music by The Muse Maker

The warm water attracts Tilapia during the winter and early spring months. The Gospel of John includes a minor detail regarding this miraculous catch of "large" fish. John tells us there were "153 fish." Why include this detail? What is the significance of the number 153? A derrota virou vitória esfuziante. A tristeza se encantou com a surpresa empolgante. A lágrima ressuscitou alegria. A tumba estava vazia. Join us as we visit Tabgha, on shores of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Take in Hans Weichbrodt's message as our group senses the peaceful rolling waves and the beauty of the setting.  These are the recordings from our trips: Break Forth Journeys- Spiritual Journeys to the Lands of the Bible. These messages have been recorded right on site during our trips to the lands of the Bible. We’ll be bringing you messages right from Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece and beyond. Each episode will bring you right to the places where prophets, priests, kings, apostles and of course, our Messiah, Jesus walked. As the message unfolds you’ll hear the living sounds of the very environment around our speaker and you’ll be transported to the very place and time. The angel said to the women, “But go, tell His disciples — and Peter…” As you will hear in this PODCAST, kudos to Peter for allowing Mark to include this rather inglorious detail about this darkest hour of Peter’s storied life. If the trajectory of Peter’s faith journey was filled with ups and downs, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, here Peter hits rock bottom. What was the significance of the angel’s words to the women, “But go, tell His disciples — and Peter…”? More than you and I could ever imagine. An epic story of falling and rising, regret and redemption. You want to see redemption in real time, here it is. A story of hope and promise that you will not want to miss. Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. God bless you richly as you listen.
