Send us a textEpisode Title: Riding Waves and Beats with Thes One (Christopher Portugal)In this episode of The Quivercast, we sit down with Thes One, aka Christopher Portugal @piecelock70, a multi-talented surfer, rapper, hip-hop artist, and record producer. Growing up in the vibrant yet gritty town of San Pedro, Thes was introduced to surfing by his uncle, igniting a lifelong passion for the ocean. At the same time, he discovered his love for music, which eventually led him to co-found the iconic rap group, People Under the Stairs. Surfing in San Pedro wasn't always easy—its localized breaks and colorful characters made for a challenging lineup, especially for outsiders. But this unique environment shaped Thes, leaving an indelible mark on both his surfing and his music. While his music career took center stage for much of his early adult life, the ocean never stopped calling. Thes eventually returned to his hometown, rekindling his relationship with surfing and finding balance between his two passions. Now, whether he's on tour or traveling the globe, he makes time to chase waves and soak in the stoke of surf culture. Tune in as Thes shares his journey of navigating the intersections of music, surf, and creativity, and how these passions continue to shape his life today.Support the showBUY THE ENDLESS SUMMER BOX SET HERE!If you like the QuiverCast here are some ways to help us keep going! This one was a long time coming, my PUTS tribute podcast. At the end of January we lost a hip hop great and a talent we'll never be able to replace. Thes One and Double K of PUTS had a career spanning from the 90's till their final album in 2019. Their style of mixing humor with classic jazz breaks, unique / memorable loops and lyrical ability made for a discography that in my opinion is hard to rival or top. We'll miss you Mike Turner aka Double K. It will be a regret i'll always carry not seeing the PUTS in concert (I hate crowds but I should have still gone). I hope I did them proud with this one.

People Under the Stairs have rested their LA caps on the mantle, retiring with the legacy of two underdogs dedicated to hip-hop’s essence, prevailing no matter who hated on them. For Thes One, the chip of notoriety remains, but so does the fighting spirit; every pretty memory’s tied to a long montage of hard work. In this episode, Thes One taps in with Michael for an insightful dive into the gritty details of making and breaking independent rap careers, accompanied by reflections on the seminal PUTS album O.S.T.

Art of Sampling #2 with Thes One on Nas's "Illmatic" (1994)

The Album: Nas Illmatic (1994) In our first episode from our four-part Art of Sampling series, we focused on one of the classic sources of samples from the mid-80s: the James Brown anthology, In the Jungle Groove. For #2, we wanted to turn our attention to an album whose use of samples helped influences sampling culture and for that, we went with a giant celebrating its 25th anniversary this year: Nas's debut album, Illmatic. So much has been said about this LP over the years, we shouldn’t need to make a case for it but here’s the short version: it’s not simply considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time but it’s universally lauded as one of the greatest debut albums in any genre, least of all given the intense hype around Nas leading up to it. Befitting that anticipation, Illmatic drew, really for the first time, a Dream Team-esque assemblage of some of New York’s finest producers including Q-Tip, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor and L.E.S. Their production decisions, including the samples that powered their now iconic tracks, marked one peak in hip-hop’s golden era of sample-based production. To help us break all this down, we invited one of Los Angeles’s finest: Thes One, half of People Under the Stairs (and composer of our theme song!) While Thes generally doesn’t like talking about other producers’ work, as a 16 year old hip-hop head hyped for Illmatic when it dropped in ’94, Thes brought his insights as both a producer and fan, and we touched on everything from the use of nostalgia in sample choices, how Nas’s flow worked with different beats, and why DJ Premier’s “bubba chip” drum programming was a game changer. We kick things off by catching up with Thes on the new new with him and partner in crime Double K - such as the new PUTS album that they’re in the midst of releasing, what it’s like to put out music in 2016 and how part 2 of said new album was an extremely difficult one to complete. For you history buffs out there, we step in the wayback machine and talk about PUTS being a pioneer in releasing music in a high fidelity format in 2011, the struggles faced learning the game in the early day and how all of these experiences have shaped a much different attitude today compared to a 20-year old Thes One. Somehow we get into an intriguing conversation on artists turning to crowd funding and why it’s not an option for PUTS, as well as a continuance of an extremely interesting conversation we had with Methuzalah last week regarding the allegations surrounding the Universal Zulu Nation’s Afrika Bambaataa. There are tons more goodies inside folks - what do you say to a WORLDWIDE, EXCLUSIVE ANNOUNCEMENT from Thes himself - and how about the FULL story on Thes’ appearance on The Price Is Right to boot?! Don’t hesitate ya'll - tune in, turn up, cop something @ www.puts.band and remember we ALWAYS bring you that #smithsonian #grade! // @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud // #hiphop #rap #dj #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #SANPEDRO #LOSANGELES #WORLDWIDE Recorded live June 6, 2016 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #itunes #podcast #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud twitter/IG: @jondoeatl @southernvangard @cappuccinomeeks

We also discuss future collaborations with rising Philly heavyweight Jakk Frost, his hopes of working with Kanye West again and much more! Rapper Big Pooh has every reason to be proud. His new album Dirty Pretty Things and self-owned record label are causing a buzz rarely seen outside wasp nests, so it was a true honour to talk with the man himself. Expect the unexpected as Pooh breaks down the creation of his new opus, 9th Wonder, Phonte, his forthcoming colabs and his future work.     More than ever before, Consequence is on demand. With a new project entitled Curb Certified on the horizon and a new-found passion in growing his own business with his label Bandcamp Records, Cons is on his own spaceship right now. In this interview the ever optimistic and ambitious Consequence talks the creation of Curb Certified and its recent leaks, plans of working with DJ Premier, Jay Dilla, hardships of his past, Don't Quit Your Day Job and it's relevance with today’s political climate plus more. Statik Selektah joins us in busy form to discuss his new production for Eminem, to be featured on Eminem's forthcoming collaborative effort with Obie Trice. Forever working, Statik tells of his plans to make an album in a day with Bun B, as well as his reaction of some people to his latest compilation Population Control. We take time to discuss Nas' new album, a project that Statik has a firm hand in, as well as his hopes to work on future Slaughterhouse material. A rapid update. Blacastan is a master and builder, crafting some of Hip Hop' strongest architecture, so it was a pleasure to build with the workhorse about his new project; Master Builder 2, which is scheduled for release early 2012.  We also talk his recent accomplishments such as his recent induction into the Demigodz, landing a spot on Violence Begets Violence, forthcoming collaborations wth AOTP and Celph Titled, performing, his grass roots grind and more before being joined by Jus Allah and Virtuoso for an update on their new projects and a fatal three way acapella. Essential listening! The People Under The Stairs are back, joining us in the form of one half of the group's Thes-One to hold a detailed discussion on their fantastic album Highlighter. Rated as one of the most consistently innovative groups to emerge from L.A., Thes-One talks us through the creation of Highlighter and identifies the reasons behind choosing to record it at multiple hand-picked studios in Los Angeles. In addition to the aesthetics of this, we also talk sampling, artwork, longevity, touring and more in an definitive highlight interview. Eligh and Amplive step into the studio for a candid therapy session and discussion regarding their forthcoming release Therapy At 3. We discuss the origins of the album and the aesthetics of its creation, Eligh's writing process, the therapy of touring versus the therapy of recording, being therapists of each others work together in the process of communication, creative approaches and more. In addition, we talk the future of both Eligh and Amp-Live, which will include a tour in support of Therapy At 3, a potential collaborative project between Grouch, Eligh and Zion-I and a new Livin' Legends album next year! Hasan Salaam nobly enters the show filled with anticipation for his forthcoming release Music Is My Weapon, available Dec 6th. We discuss the importance of this new project, with all of the proceeds being actively used to fund the building of a school, clean water well, and medical clinic in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa. YOU must support this justified cause HERE and watch Hasan's excellent new music video for the single 1911 HERE In addition to a frank discussion regarding these efforts to provide change to a country that remains one of the poorest and least politically stable in the world, we find time to discuss the new range of producers Hasan is working with including The Snowgoons and CWR's long-time affiliate Cross Bone T J-Zone dramatically leaps onto the show live from a car journey to discuss his brand new book Root For The Villain, available to purchase HERE .Far from a comfortable, cozy documentation of a glamorous Rap Life, this piece of brutally frank and at times, painfully truthful literature is an essential read. We take time to discuss the creation of the book, J-Zone's musings regarding future musical output, Heavy D's sad passing and a mutual celebration of Too Much Trouble's mass murdering midget, Bar-None. As live as it gets. Ho.   AND THAT'S NOT ALL! BONUS PODCAST-ONLY FOOTAGE An accomplished Moka Only swings through the studio just hours before his debut show in London, offering a detailed exploration behind the making of his latest set Crickets, as well as revealing new forthcoming music with Madchild. As one of the most enegetic shows in the past few, trouble-filled, months Mista Montana (in controversial form) and Menace deliver an action-packed 4 hours of broadcasting, deciding which Conspiracy-related guests would be suited to the 2009 Conspiracy Big Brother House. Listeners join in and at one point a heavily-wounded fox wanders into the studio with a a photo of Coolio chewing a wasp, in its aching jaw and passes it casually to Menace who then reacts by instantly dancing like a stinging-nettle covered epileptic to the sounds of Crystal Waters' 90s classic, "Gypsy Women", even though the said song wasn't even playing. Supernatural! WHAT A SHOW IT WAS THIS WEEK!! If you haven't downloaded any of our shows before - this one is the perfect place to start! SHAKE THE TWEETER!
