This week I speak with Sally Livingston. Sally was born in Miami, Florida, as Sally Snow White. Though the name is legitimate (named after her two grandmothers), she is fond of the fairy tale. She has been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, church ministry leader, and parent educator for almost 30 years and has worked with many people caught in the trap of believing they have to live out of what they were given or have experienced. She loves counseling, speaking, teaching, and helping people move to a place of freedom that only comes by accepting God's Truth about who they are and where they can go in life. Sally works to move people from where they are to where they want to be with grace and purpose. Sally and her husband, Scott – a retired Fire Captain – live in Florida and have three exceptional adult children, two amazing “children-in-law,” and two grandsons. You won't want to miss this inspiring conversation where we look back at Sally's childhood up to the present to find the beautiful story of God working through her life! In this special episode of the Aviatrix Book Review, I talk with Lieutenant Commander Ronaqua Russell about how she found her way into Coast Guard aviation, her participation in hurricane relief efforts as an HC144 pilot (I mistakenly introduce her as an HC130 pilot at the beginning but we clear that up later), the experience of receiving the Coast Guard Air Medal at Moton Field, home of the Tuskegee Airmen, and the role mentorship has played in her success as the fifth Black female pilot in the Coast Guard. Ronnie's story was highlighted in Ann McCallum Staats' middle grade biography collection HIGH FLYERS: FIFTEEN INSPIRING WOMEN AVIATORS AND ASTRONAUTS. You can listen to my interview with Ann in Season 2, Episode 18 Links to everything including the Literary Aviatrix Newsletter.
In this episode, we hear the amazing account of Case Thomas's decision to retire and the deliberate decision to live in the present each step of the way: from devoting 100% of his energy and focus to his job before terminal leave, the decision to use that period to truly rest, and to start his job search after he was in a retired status. Case's networking and job search may resonate with a lot of us: a general idea of what he wanted and the struggle to parlay his military experience into breaking into a non-attorney role in industry. He also talks about the danger in listening to everyone about things like resumes and one's LinkedIn Profile. Case now serves as the Vice President, Global Learning, Development & Performance in Austin, TX. His LinkedIn profile can be found at https://www.linkedin.com/in/casey-z-thomas.
