Josh Howell, LEI President, talks about the relationship of problem-solving and daily management with Jill Miller, Manager for Global Learning and Development at MillerKnoll, a maker of office furniture, equipment, and home furnishings. Jill supports the development, use, and expansion of the MillerKnoll Performance System (MKPS), which she says is designed to meet customers' needs by engaging and developing people to daily surface and solve problems. “At its heart, it's really about building capability across the organization.” Josh and Jill describe their experiences with how an effective daily management system makes it easy and straightforward for organizations to know what problems they should be solving. “One of the most powerful things about MKPS is that it helps make problems visible every day, right where the work is happening,” says Jill. “So when people ask, ‘What problem do we need to solve?' the system actually helps answer that by revealing the problems that might otherwise go unnoticed. I think at that point, the problems are plentiful. There's no shortage of problems.” MKPS intentionally sets up both the system and culture to support daily problem-solving by: Designing work to clearly show abnormalities and make them visible in real time, Making it easy and safe for individuals to quickly highlight problems (people are not blamed or ignored), Providing a prompt, supportive reaction to an associate's call for help (an “andon call”), and Ensuring the problems that are surfaced actually get solved; team leaders (called “facilitators” at MillerKnoll) are developed to be skilled in practical problem-solving, identifying root causes, and eliminating problems in ways that keep them from recurring. The two also discuss the development of ongoing MKPS expertise within MillerKnoll: building capability in a way that is standardized so that MKPS is effectively executed in a consistent manner. This involves a partnership between the MKPS leadership team, operations leaders, and the human resources group that supports operations for selecting individuals to train (“students”), creating alignment based on behaviors and characteristics, and reflecting on the learning process and its effectiveness. Jill says students have called the development program “life changing” — who they are as a person, how they think, how they see their roles, how they interact with people, and how they approach their careers within the company.

"What does it take to build a thriving career when you're navigating multiple intersectional identities?" Dr. Janine Lee knows firsthand. As the Global Head of Learning at a Fortune 500 tech company, Dr. Lee has spent nearly 20 years breaking barriers while building an impressive multifaceted career. In this episode of Thriving in Intersectionality, she shares how being an American-born Chinese woman from Oakland shaped her leadership journey and why she believes your intersectional identity can become your greatest professional strength. The Power of Intersectional Identity Dr. Lee opens up about the unique challenges of being "American-born Chinese" – constantly fielding the question "Where are you really from?" despite being born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up in Oakland added another layer, requiring her to code-switch between different social circles and navigate assumptions about her background. Her advice? "Write down any of the biases or assumptions that come up when they think about your intersectionality and think about how you can use them as strengths." Dr. Lee demonstrates this by intentionally speaking up more to combat stereotypes about quiet Asian women, while leveraging her natural listening skills as leadership advantages. A Framework for Career Success Dr. Lee's approach to career development centers on three key elements: Find Your North Star: Create a personal mission statement and vision that guides all decisions. Dr. Lee's mission – "to inspire others to reach their full potential" – shows up in everything from her corporate role to her coaching practice. Focus on What, How, and Who: Master your skills (what), develop your unique delivery style (how), and build strong networks (who). This combination creates what Dr. Lee calls an "unstoppable" career foundation. Embrace Non-Linear Paths: Dr. Lee successfully juggles corporate leadership, executive coaching, teaching at UC Berkeley, speaking, and writing. Her secret? Aligning everything under the same mission umbrella. The Continuous Learning Advantage Dr. Lee earned both her MBA and doctorate while working full-time, often maintaining 14-15 hour days. Her groundbreaking dissertation on workplace belonging for Women of Color in Tech was featured in Harvard Business Review. Her message is clear: continuous learning isn't just about credentials – it's about combating career stagnation and staying aligned with your evolving goals. About Dr. Janine Lee Dr. Lee holds an MBA from UC Berkeley and an EdD from USC. She's a certified executive coach, LinkedIn Top Voice, and author of "Unstoppable: Rise of Female Global Leaders." Her course on "Leading DEI Change" is featured on LinkedIn Learning, and she's taught over 200 MBA students from 35+ countries. Dr. Kelly Tzoumis, professor emeritus at DePaul University and lecturer at Johns Hopkins, discusses virtual exchange programs that make global learning accessible to students with disabilities. These innovative approaches embed intercultural experiences directly into curriculum, overcoming barriers of cost and physical accessibility while building crucial competencies.• Virtual exchange goes beyond video calls—students are prepared to interact across cultures before meeting peers• Less than 10% of students can afford traditional study abroad, making virtual exchange a more inclusive alternative • Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide framework for global learning beyond just environmental topics• Students develop empathy when working across language barriers with international peers• Generational shifts in disability language reflect changing views of disability as identity• Research shows virtual exchanges improve student mental health through developing resilience• Students with disabilities demonstrate extraordinary capabilities when given appropriate accommodations• Disclosure remains a major challenge in higher education—less than half of disabled students formally identify• Creative accommodations should involve the learner as an active partner in finding solutions• As world polarization increases, virtual exchange becomes even more vital for intercultural understandingFind Dr. Tzoumis's book "Global Learning and the SDGs Through Virtual Exchange" through Springer Nature Press, with a follow-up focused on discipline-specific applications coming soon.Support the showFollow axschat on social media.Bluesky:Antonio https://bsky.app/profile/akwyz.com Debra https://bsky.app/profile/debraruh.bsky.social Neil https://bsky.app/profile/neilmilliken.bsky.social axschat https://bsky.app/profile/axschat.bsky.social LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/antoniovieirasantos/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/axschat/Vimeohttps://vimeo.com/akwyzhttps://twitter.com/axschathttps://twitter.com/AkwyZhttps://twitter.com/neilmillikenhttps://twitter.com/debraruh

The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
In a wide-ranging and thought-provoking conversation, Pia Rebello Britto, Global Director of Education and Adolescent Development at UNICEF, unpacks the sobering reality of education in the face of accelerating climate change and systemic inequality. Drawing on her extensive global experience and UNICEF's latest report, "Learning Interrupted: Global snapshot of climate-related school disruptions in 2024", she provides a clear-eyed analysis of the intersecting crises that threaten the educational futures of hundreds of millions of children worldwide. At the heart of the discussion is an alarming statistic: in 2024 alone, climate-related disruptions affected a staggering 250 million children. Across 85 countries, extreme weather—floods, heatwaves, storms, and air pollution—upended school calendars, damaged infrastructure, and derailed learning. Yet climate is only one part of the broader learning crisis. Britto highlights three distinct yet interconnected challenges: children being denied access to school altogether; those enrolled but receiving substandard education; and those whose education is interrupted by crises. Each of these systemic failures contributes to the shocking global reality that 7 in 10 ten-year-olds cannot read a simple sentence. Despite the scale of the challenge, Britto remains deeply committed to transformative solutions. She calls for immediate investment in climate-smart learning environments—resilient, adaptive infrastructure designed to withstand future shocks. Central to these reforms is the recognition that teachers are the keystone of educational quality. Britto makes a compelling case for a global reboot of teacher preparation and professional development, describing it as one of the most efficient and scalable pathways to improving learning outcomes. At the same time, she warns against the seductive appeal of “shiny” EdTech solutions that lack evidence of impact. Effective integration of technology must be grounded in pedagogy, not novelty. She also highlights two often overlooked groups: girls and children with disabilities. Both face compounded barriers to education, and despite advances in assistive technology, inclusive learning remains vastly under-prioritized. It is here, Britto suggests, that funders and innovators could make some of the most catalytic interventions. For philanthropists, policymakers, and advocates, Britto offers a clear call to action: do your homework, invest in what works, advocate vocally for education as a fundamental right, and act locally as well as globally. Her vision is pragmatic yet optimistic. Education, she reminds us, is not merely a public service—it is a social contract. It is the most powerful instrument we have to unlock potential, and shape a sustainable future. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. Send us a textI feel very fortunate to release today's episode as I had a chance to sit down on Zoom with the brilliant Stef Okamoto, who is currently the Director of Manager Excellence for Service Now, a fast growing American software company based in Santa Clara, California. Before moving to ServiceNow, Stef had a distinguished career at Microsoft for 23 years, serving the organisation in her last 7 years as the Leader of Management Excellence in Global Learning and Development. Having worked directly under former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmar and current CEO Satya Nadalla, Stef experienced two drastically different leadership styles, one that was strongly based on control and compliance and fear under Ballmar to a much more human-centred, empowering approach rooted in high support, trust, autonomy and deep learning under Satya Nadalla. Based on these experiences, Stef learned how she did NOT want to lead, but rather, how she could take action to become the very best leader possible and to do so with courage, vulnerability, and authenticity, but at the same time, not let these things get in the way of holding those who she led to the highest standards possible. During this time, she learned that it's still necessary to be tough on people, but to do so with compassion, by providing them with a sense of high support in order for them achieve their true potential and to also help them find deep meaning in their work and a genuine sense of contribution to the organization. Stef's wisdom and work ethic stems directly from early days in her life. As an elite athlete who not only played in the junior Olympics as a softball player, she also received an academic scholarship to play volleyball in college. It was through these experiences that she developed a resilient mindset that allowed her to be fiercely independent in order to show what she was truly capable of achieving in life. In our episode, we discussed, in detail, how she's been able to stay deeply connected to her core values in life even through turbulent, challenging times and how she was able to overcome a harsh, negative inner critic in a way that helped her to construct an empowering personal narrative that ultimately gave her the self-confidence needed to take bold risks and to speak her genuine truth with respect and courage in order to truly find her place in such a competitive work environment. As you'll hear in this episode, Stef is deeply passionate about the work she does and when I think of her story I think of a quote from Oprah Winfrey which is this: When thinking about Stef, there's no doubt, she's found her calling and continues to shine brightly in a world that needs courageous leaders to stand up and take action to bring out the very best in others. Stef and I would love to hear your thoughts and what resonated the most with you in regards to our conversation. So, please share any thoughts on social media, as well, if you know someone who would benefit from tuning into our episode, please share the link with them. This is a rebroadcast. The episode originally ran in March 2020. Jacob Hess, Carrie Skarda, Kyle Anderson, and Ty Mansfield are the authors of The Power of Stillness: Mindful Living for Latter-day Saints. In this interview they discuss where mindfulness and meditation fit into the gospel and how we can better approach our service and our practices with the balance of mindfulness. Jacob Hess, PhD, is a clinical psychologist and a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) instructor trained through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Carrie Skarda, PsyD, is a psychologist in private practice. She has provided individual and couples therapy with particular interest in attachment trauma and mindfulness, and has studied and practiced mindfulness and formal meditation for over ten years. Kyle Anderson, PhD, is a professor of Chinese and Asian Studies, currently an administrator in Global Learning, International Partnerships and Initiatives at Clemson University, and came to mindfulness meditation through his studies in Asian literature. Ty Mansfield, PhD, is a practicing marriage and family therapist, an adjunct instructor in Religious Education at Brigham Young University, and is in the process of certification with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach in their Mindfulness Meditation Teacher training program. Kimball The Council for Sustainable Healing Transcript coming soon Get 14-day access to the Core Leader Library Highlights 5:40 Jacob was exposed to meditation in graduate school and began to see where it fit into the gospel tradition 7:00 Backgrounds of the authors 9:00 Definitions of mindfulness and what it means to Christians and to Latter-day Saints: compassionate presence in the moment 11:10 Christ was meditative and present in the moment 12:25 Being busy vs. mindfulness 14:00 Looking for words in our own tradition: reverence, peace, stillness, pondering 15:45 Advice for a busy leader: Christ had a practice of punctuating his doing with non-doing; the rhythm of action and pausing is already built in to our practices 19:40 It's not the gospel that people struggle with, but an impoverished experience of it 20:55 David O. McKay quote: “I think we pay too little attention to the value of meditation, a principle of devotion. In our worship there are two elements: One is spiritual communion arising from our own meditation; the other, instruction from others, particularly from those who have authority to guide and instruct us. Of the two, the more profitable introspectively is meditation. Meditation is the language of the soul.” 22:10 Example in a ward council: not praying as a to-do, but sitting with the Savior 23:30 Clarity and priority come through pausing between action 24:25 Centering the attention on the inspiration in the moment and not on the calendar: Am I interruptable? 26:20 The Savior was interruptable in his task at hand and could pivot to what was most needful in the moment 28:35 The Savior was willing to build in his time with His Father, the foundation of His work 29:35 We can meditate on the person in front of us by giving them our full attention in that moment 31:30 The order in which the Savior did what he did: communion with the Father, surrounding himself in community, then going out to minister 33:45 C.S. Lewis (in Mere Christianity): “It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind.”

Welcome to the latest episode of iQor's CX Labs Digitally Irresistible podcast where we delve into the world of organizational development with Mark Monaghan, vice president of organizational development at iQor. Mark shares insights on the components of organizational development, as well as heartwarming examples of employees whose careers have been positively impacted by iQor's leadership training and development programs. Investing in employee growth and development through training and mentoring transforms the employee experience, driving a rewarding workplace culture, ongoing employee career growth, and excellent customer experiences. Tune in to learn how iQor elevates employee training and mentoring to improve performance and customer satisfaction by cultivating the next generation of leaders to create smile-worthy CX. Career Advancement Through Organizational Development Mark Monaghan's career in human resources began about 25 years ago as chief HR officer for another company. He joined iQor about 12 years ago as vice president of corporate training, working with his team to help develop frontline leaders through initiatives such as iQor's PeaQ Performance Qoaching and sQholars programs. When the department evolved into the Global Learning and Development Department a few years ago, Mark became vice president of organizational development with a focus on career pathing and learning to boost performance and leadership opportunities for iQor's global workforce. He and his team spearheaded more coaching and mentoring opportunities for future leaders through additional learning initiatives such as the iLead Program with a leadership competency model focused on tasks and responsibilities connected to individual roles. The Building Blocks of Development The heart of iQor's organizational development strategy lies in its leadership competency model, which categorizes employees based on their leadership roles and provides specific competencies aligned to each level, from leading oneself to leading a team to leading a department to leading a vision. Each category has five Lominger Competencies aligned to it. For instance, leading a team involves developing direct reports as one of the competencies. The organizational development department has mapped learning to each competency. This model forms the backbone of various programs and workshops orchestrated to support employee growth and development. One of the flagship initiatives is the sQholars Program, which aims to groom entry-level employees for higher leadership roles within iQor. This program has been instrumental in nurturing talent like Cheyenne, a success story from the financial services vertical. Starting as a sQholar in 2019, Cheyenne progressed from agent to assistant manager in the operations department by embracing iQor's servant leadership model. Another successful financial services sQholar is Michelle, who strengthened her communications and coaching skills to become an assistant manager in operations thanks to the guidance and support she received. Another notable initiative, the LevelUp Program, prepares supervisors for higher managerial positions and equips them with skills and competencies to thrive in leadership roles. Interactive LevelUp training sessions empower employees to engage effectively and learn proactively. LevelUp participant Jovi's promotion to assistant manager stands as a testament to the department's commitment to nurturing internal talent and preparing them for leadership roles. The PeaQ Performance Qoaching Workshop focuses on empowering supervisors to identify critical behaviors and coach their teams effectively, contributing to overall performance improvement. These programs, along with others like learning compliance and employee evaluation support, are all part of the larger global learning department and reflect iQor's commitment to nurturing and developing its talent pool. No matter which program employees participate in, iQor's commitment to award-winning training and organizational development has built career paths that have supported the journeys of many iQor employees from agents to senior managers and senior vice presidents. A Client-Centric Approach Key to the success of organizational development at iQor is a client-centric approach, which prioritizes collaboration with clients to gain valuable insights and feedback. By understanding clients' specific needs and challenges, organizational development can tailor programs to align with the client's values while upholding iQor's organizational values. The transparent and collaborative partnership between iQor and its clients fosters customization, ensuring that learning programs meet the unique needs of clients while enhancing the skills and capabilities of employees. This collaborative approach exemplifies iQor's commitment to delivering irresistible customer experiences through empowered and skilled employees. Customization Is the Future of Organizational Development Looking ahead, the future of organizational development at iQor is poised for innovation and growth. Mark expresses excitement about securely leveraging AI to enhance coaching and mentorship programs, envisioning a personalized learning experience that meets employees at their individual needs. This forward-thinking approach aligns with the evolving nature of organizational development, emphasizing adaptability and individualized support. The integration of AI to support coaching and employee development reflects iQor's commitment to staying at the forefront of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies. By harnessing AI's capabilities, the organizational development department aims to further enhance the effectiveness and impact of its initiatives, contributing to employee growth. Growing Leaders From Within The organizational development department at iQor stands as a beacon of transformation and growth, driving the career trajectories of employees through innovative programs, collaborative partnerships with clients, and a forward-looking approach to employee development and engagement. It empowers employees to deliver exceptional customer experiences, setting a high standard for excellence and making iQor a Great Place to Work®. The stories of Cheyenne, Michelle, Jovi, and many others exemplify the profound impact of a supportive culture, showcasing the potential for individual growth and advancement. As iQor looks to the future, a commitment to personalized, AI-enhanced programs signals a promising direction for employee development and empowerment. With a focus on continuous learning, collaboration, and adaptability, organizational development at iQor shapes the careers of employees and makes iQor a leader in talent development and customer experience delivery that creates smiles. With the ever-increasing challenge of climate change, educationalists are having to respond in a form that moves beyond a sense of eco-anxiety and hopelessness. This lecture aims to address this by proposing a pedagogy of hope as the means to engage learners of all ages in demonstrating that change is possible through social engagement and promoting a sense of global citizenship. Inspired by the thinking of the Brazilian educationalist, Paulo Freire, Professor Bourn will outline that a sense of hope needs to link to social and environmental justice. He will refer to his recently published edited volume on this theme including examples from research and practice in the UK and elsewhere in the world. About the speaker: Professor Douglas Bourn is Director of the Development Education Research Centre at UCL. Among his recently published books are Understanding Global Skills for 21st Century Professions (2018) and Education for Social Change (2022) and editing Bloomsbury Handbook for Global Education and Learning (2020), Research in Global Learning (2023) and with Massimiliano Tarozzi, Pedagogy of Hope for Global Social Justice (2024).
