Today, I sit down with Tom McMillan and discuss his most recent book: The Year That Made America: From Rebellion to Independence, 1775-1776.This gripping account reveals the precarious path to American independence through a series of pivotal dates that history has nearly forgotten. While July 4th claims the glory, the actual vote for independence came on July 2nd—and even that historic moment almost didn't happen. From January's publication of Common Sense to December's darkest hours of the Revolution, McMillan reconstructs the dramatic months when rebellious colonies transformed into a new nation.Through meticulous research and compelling storytelling, the book reveals:How the pivotal events of May 15, June 7, and July 2 shaped America's destinyWhy Congress's bold January declaration triggered a chain of unstoppable eventsThe behind-the-scenes feud between Adams and Jefferson on their views of government after independence was wonHow the Declaration's influence extended from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address to modern timesThis timely narrative strips away the myths to expose the raw political courage that launched a revolution. From heated Congressional debates to the dangerous aftermath of declaring independence, McMillan delivers a fresh perspective on America's founding that resonates powerfully with today's political challenges.Buy The Book

Didn't think there was a Gettysburg connection to the Battle of Fort McHenry besides that of the fort's commender? Well, you'll be surprised when you find out just how connected Fort McHenry was to Gettysburg.    Our Flag Was Still There details the improbable two-hundred-year journey of the original Star-Spangled Banner -- from Fort McHenry in 1814, when Francis Scott Key first saw it, to the Smithsonian in 2023 -- and the enduring family who defended, kept, hid, and ultimately donated the most famous flag in American history. Francis Scott Key saw the original Star-Spangled Banner flying over Baltimore's Fort McHenry on September 14, 1814, following a twenty-five-hour bombardment by the British Navy, inspiring him to write the words to our national anthem. Torn and tattered over the years, reduced in size to appease souvenir-hunters, stuffed away in a New York City vault for the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the flag's mere existence after two hundred years is an improbable story of dedication, perseverance, patriotism, angst, inner-family squabbles, and, yes, more than a little luck. For this unlikely feat, we have the Armistead family to thank -- led by Lieutenant Colonel George Armistead, commander of Fort McHenry, who took it home after the battle in clear defiance of U.S. Army regulations. It is only because of that quiet indiscretion that the flag survives to this day. Armistead's descendants kept and protected their family heirloom for ninety years. The flag's first photo was not taken until 1873, almost sixty years after Key saw it waving, and most Americans did not even know of its existence until Armistead's grandson loaned it to the Smithsonian in 1907. Tom McMillan tells a story as no one has before. Digging deep into the archives of Fort McHenry and the Smithsonian, accessing never-before-published letters and documents, and presenting rare photos from the private collections of Armistead descendants and other sources, McMillan follows the flag on an often-perilous journey through three centuries. Our Flag Was Still There provides new insight into an intriguing period of U.S. history, offering a "story behind the story" account of one of the country's most treasured relics.

Author and historian Tom McMillan joins Tim to talk about his book called, “Our Flag Was Still There – The Star Spangled Banner that Survived the British and 200 Years. And the Armistead Family who saved it.”  Tom is the author of four books centered on stories related to 9/11 and Flight 93; two books about key figures in the Gettysburg battle during the Civil War; and now his latest book that tells the story behind the story of the most famous flag in American history. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Our_Flag_Was_Still_There_auphonic.mp3 If you're a regular listener to the Shaping Opinion podcast, you may remember an interview we did before with Tom McMillan. We had a great conversation with him in March of 2019. That was our 58th episode. If you're keeping track, this one is our 294th episode. In that earlier episode, Tom told us about five local boys from Gettysburg who came back to fight in an epic battle in their hometown. Today, we're going to talk with Tom about a different chapter in American history. The events surrounding the War of 1812, a famous battle at Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor, the story behind our National Anthem, and an American family that preserved one of the most sacred artifacts in our nation's history. One that now rests in the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. But there's more to Tom than just history, and it's worth knowing that up front. Tom started his career as a sports writer. He then became a hockey executive until his retirement. But long before he retired, he started his transition into author and historian. How does something like that happen? About the Book Our Flag Was Still There details the improbable two-hundred-year journey of the original Star-Spangled Banner—from Fort McHenry in 1814, when Francis Scott Key first saw it, to the Smithsonian in 2023—and the enduring family who defended, kept, hid, and ultimately donated the most famous flag in American history. In a war of brother versus brother, theirs has become the most famous broken friendship: Union general Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate general Lewis Armistead. Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels (1974) and the movie Gettysburg (1993), based on the novel, presented a close friendship sundered by war, but history reveals something different from the legend that holds up Hancock and Armistead as sentimental symbols of a nation torn apart. In this deeply researched book, Tom McMillan sets the record straight. Even if their relationship wasn't as close as the legend has it, Hancock and Armistead knew each other well before the Civil War. Armistead was seven years older, but in a small prewar army where everyone seemed to know everyone else, Hancock and Armistead crossed paths at a fort in Indian Territory before the Mexican War and then served together in California, becoming friends—and they emotionally parted ways when the Civil War broke out. Their lives wouldn't intersect again until Gettysburg, when they faced each other during Pickett's Charge. Armistead died of his wounds at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863; Hancock went on to be the Democratic nominee for president in 1880, losing to James Garfield. Tom McMillan, a lifelong student of the Civil War, has served on the board of trustees of Pittsburgh's Heinz History Center, the board of directors of the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial, and the marketing committee of the Gettysburg Foundation. If we don't we'll die!'  A key statement from a passenger on Flight 93 prior to the commercial airliner slamming into a field outside Shanksville, PA.  Many overlooked this important quote when the black box transcript of Flight 93 was released.  Why was it so intriguing to historian Tom McMillan?  We all know the name ‘Todd Beamer.'  But, were there other heroes on Flight 93 and who was believed to have lead the charge and how does a former Monroeville resident factor in?  On this edition of ‘Kevin Battle Goes One-on-One With:' I thought I'd take a slightly different approach.  This Saturday marks 20 years since the Islamist attacks on the United States on September 11th, 2001. I distinctly remember where I was when I first heard of a plane crashing into One World Trade Center.  What about you?   Historian Tom McMillan was Vice President of the Pittsburgh Penguins on that day.  He is now recognized around the world as an expert on Flight 93 - the airliner that slammed into a field outside of Shanksville, PA.  How did that happen?  Interestingly, his book ‘Flight 93: The Story, The Aftermath and the Legacy of American Courage on 9/11' is the quintessential guide of that terror attack, the hijacking, and ensuing struggle. Thank you for listening to ‘Kevin Battle Goes One-On-One With: Flight 93 and Expert Tom McMillan.'

Author and historian Tom McMillan joins Tim to talk about the Civil War history of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and why it still matters in the 21st Century. If the outcome were different, there could be up to five different countries between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. https://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Gettysburg_-_Why_It_Still_Matters_auphonic.mp3   The American Civil War started in 1861 with the southern states forming the Confederacy and the decision to secede from the United States. The Confederacy won its share of battles as the Union appeared to struggle with strategy, decision-making and leadership By the summer of 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to try to capitalize on a eries of Confederate victories and win the war on Northern soil. His goal was to force President Lincoln to negotiate for a quick peace. His route was the Shenandoah Valley, which provided cover for his army, as the union army followed in pursuit. The Confederate force entered Pennsylvania in mid-June, and by the end of the month, it had reached the Susquehanna River near Harrisburg. Federal and Confederate forces would collide at the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on the morning of July 1st. In that first day, the Confederates pushed the Union Army to the west and north of Gettysburg, but could not take some strategic hills that preserved the high ground for the Federals. On the second day, reinforcements arrived for both armies. General Lee decided to attack the growing Union Army, which occupied strong positions in the heights. He paid particular attention to the right and left sides of the Federals, trying to outflank them. But the day ended with no significant change in ground occupation. On the third day, which was July 3rd, the Confederates attacked the Union center at a place known as Cemetery Ridge. This is known as Pickett’s Charge, named after Confederate General George Picket who led the attack. On that day, the Confederates would reach their furthest point in the North during the war. Historians refer to this battle as the time when the Confederates reached High Tide, before retreating south. The battle of Gettysburg was a defeat for Lee and the Confederate Army, but it would be two more years of fighting before the Civil War would come to an end. By the end of the battle of Gettysburg, there were heavy casualties on both sides. Roughly 51,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured, or listed as missing. In my own research on the topic, one person described it best. He said that’s 51,000 unique stories, combined with the stories of those who survived or where affected in some way by the Battle of Gettysburg. This is the site of the Wentz House on the Gettysburg battlefield as it looks today. Notice the remnants of its foundation in the left corner. The fighting at Gettysburg has inspired countless books, movies, documentaries and many journal and news articles. The town of Gettysburg remains one of the most popular Civil War destinations for historians, history buffs and tourist. In this episode, Tom and Tim talk about the Battle of Gettysburg and its impact on a small cross-section of people who were there and how their stories still resonate today. The passengers of United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 have earned their rightful place among the pantheon of American heroes. Flight 93 provides a riveting narrative based on interviews, oral histories, transcripts, recordings, personal tours of the crash site, and voluminous trial evidence made public only in recent years. There also is plenty of chilling new detail for readers who think they know the story of the flight. Utilizing research tools that were not available in the years immediately after the crash, the book offers the most complete account of what actually took place aboard United 93 – from its delayed takeoff at Newark International Airport to the moment it plunged upside-down at 563 miles per hour into an open field in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Tom McMillan has spent a lifetime in media and communications: as a newspaper sports writer, radio talk-show host, and for the past 17 years as Vice President of Communications for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League. He’s written on deadline, interviewed superstars, traveled the world, grilled guests on radio shows, issued official statements, developed social media strategy, counseled millionaire owners and faced withering questions from TV reporters about his organization’s controversial bankruptcy case. For three years he served as the Penguins’ VP of Marketing in addition to VP of Communications. He is also a volunteer at the Flight 93 National Memorial, where he helps to orient visitors to the crash site.
