Welcome to HALO Talks! In this episode, host Pete Moore sits down with Tom Morrissey, founder of Solo Health Collective and a seasoned veteran in the health insurance world, to unpack the complex—and often misunderstood—landscape of healthcare for self-employed professionals. With a career spanning decades at Cigna and deep experience serving everyone from major corporations to solo entrepreneurs, Tom shares how he's dedicated his life to helping small business owners and solopreneurs access quality, affordable health coverage. Despite his success in the large-account space, Tom noticed an unmet need: Small and mid-sized businesses were often overlooked by health insurers and weren't given access to innovative cost-saving or health improvement solutions that benefited the bigger corporations. If you're a personal trainer, group ex instructor, wellness coach, massage therapist, or any professional running your own business, this conversation is a game changer. Tom explains the differences between HMO and PPO plans, why traditional ACA ("Affordable Care Act") options can fall short for the self-employed, and how his company's unique group plan model is designed to deliver robust coverage (including preventive care and nationwide access) with transparent pricing and minimal out-of-pocket surprises. Plus, hear about partnerships with organizations like the Freelancers Union, and learn how innovative features like HSAs can work for you—even covering perks like fitness classes. On the healthcare issues facing entrepreneurs, Morrissey states, "We saw the growth. It depends on who you listen to, but estimates are that there'll be 90M solo business, owners by 2028. I want to say there's about 60M now. The guys and gals that own these businesses . . . I think, especially when they're young and healthy, are the ones that get screwed the most in healthcare. You know? All they really have access to is ACA plans." Key themes discussed Challenges of health insurance for solopreneurs and self-employed. Differences between PPO and HMO health plans. Underwriting and rate-setting for solo business owners. Preventive care coverage and HSA/HSA usage changes. Brand trust versus new insurance providers like Solo Health Collective. Partnerships with organizations such as Freelancers Union. Long-term cost sustainability for healthier insurance collectives. A few key takeaways: 1. Solo Health Plans Are Filling a Major Gap: Morrissey explains how traditional health insurance often overlooks solopreneurs and small business owners, especially in the HALO space. His company, Healthy Business Group via Solo Health Collective, is designed specifically to provide comprehensive PPO health plans to solo business owners—offering an alternative with more flexibility and better coverage than typical limited-network ACA and HMO options. 2. Key Plan Advantages-PPO Access and Maximum Out-of-Pocket Clarity: Unlike many ACA or HMO plans that limit provider networks and access, Solo Health Collective offers nationwide PPO plans, granting members broader access to healthcare providers. They also have a straightforward approach: After the deductible is met, there's no coinsurance—meaning your deductible is the absolute maximum you'll pay out-of-pocket for covered expenses (with all preventative care covered in full and not applied to the deductible). 3. Plans Are Designed for Solo Business Owners With Medical Underwriting: To qualify, you must have an EIN (Employer Identification Number) and be a business owner without employees. Members go through a quick, five-question medical underwriting process, which allows the plan to provide tailored age, and location-based rates—often significantly less expensive than standard individual policies, especially for young, healthy professionals. 4. HSAs and Innovative Usage for Wellness Are Embraced: The plan supports health savings accounts (HSAs), and Tom shared how, thanks to evolving IRS guidelines and technology, people can now use HSA funds for things like fitness classes and certain wellness purchases, expanding the value of pre-tax health dollars and encouraging preventive care and healthy lifestyles. 5. Long-Term Value and Stability Solo Health Collective is built on a self-insured, level-funded model supported by robust reinsurance (Odyssey A+ rated.) This allows the collective to stabilize costs and potentially keep renewal increases lower than the industry average—especially as it pools healthier, proactive members like those in the wellness and fitness industries. The long-term goal is to create a sustainable, affordable health insurance solution specifically for entrepreneurs who have historically been underserved. The amateur filling an 82,000-capacity stadium before returning to the day job on Monday morning is one of the sources of pride among GAA folk. But how long will players be content to train as professionals and generate tens of millions in gate receipts and commercial revenue and go unpaid - while all around them are earning money? Perhaps not long if you go by what Limerick hurler Tom Morrissey wrote in the Irish Times at the weekend.Everybody on All-Ireland final days, he says, from management teams to media to food vendors and security staff are professional. But the main actors are doing it for nothing but the honour of representing their county and a modest grant payment.Morrissey cites a recent GPA-commissioned report which claims intercounty players generate €591 million annually for the economy and support more than 4,000 jobs but are out-of-pocket by an average of €4,500 each year. The players union says this issue must be addressed urgently - which effectively means that the taxpayer has to make up the shortfall through grants and tax breaks. Is this fair to the exchequer, or should the GAA use their revenue to compensate players? But if that happens are we in a world of open professionalism, as opposed to the more covert kind which has existed for decades?Gav and Sinead get into the details of the debate and try to work out the best Irish solution for this most Irish of problems.Gav wonders if the GPA has gone full Flann O'Brien in their request for more money to preserve their amateur status. Just do away with the pretence of amateurism, which is long since dead, he says.Sinead fears a Pandora's Box if payments to players are regularised and argues that all-powerful county managers making unsustainable demands on amateur players need to be brought into line. Also, in the name of economic impact reports - of the which the GPA is the latest purveyor - Gav calculates the considerable value to the Irish economy of this podcast.Get in touch with the show: email gavincooney@the42.ie and sinead@thejournal.ieThis week's episode of The 42FM is brought to you by An Post Money. Interview by Kris PetersFollowing two previous albums - their self titled in 2012 and The Answer in 2018 - New York City rock outfit Killcode found themselves in the unenviable position of being one of the many bands in the massive potential category but still lacking that knockout blow to elevate them further. That opportunity came knocking when Killcode released their third album Life, Death Rock N' Roll in January of this year, cementing their growing reputation and, if anything, enhancing it even further.Written before and during COVID, Life, Death, Rock N' Roll is an album made up of songs about life's ups and downs and is bursting at the seams with hard rock classics coupled with deeply personal numbers that show the more human side of the band.Frontman Tom Morrissey joined HEAVY recently to talk about the new album and the rise of Killcode."With this album we weren't really going for anything specifically, as we never really do" he explained. "We just write naturally and whatever comes naturally we go with. We definitely explored more sonically on this album. It's a little more mature. We used some different instrumentation - some piano - but overall in general I think the songwriting is a touch more mature, but it's still straight ahead rock and roll. High energy. You have your rockers, your ballads, some introspective songs, some personal songs and some drinking songs (laughs)." In the full interview, Tom talks more about the sonic direction of the album, how Killcode has grown musically with each release, the early reception to the album, coming up with inspiration during COVID, doing live-stream concerts and other promotional tools during that period, their cover of You Can't Stop Rock & Roll by Twisted Sister and why they chose that song, the formation of Killcode, their early vision and how it has changed since, touring plans and more.

Nowadays, every company is pretty much a technology company, and as such, they all should have some understanding of quality assurance (QA). Also, an understanding of information security would be nice. The question is, how and where do these two worlds collide? And, is that security world AppSec or DevSecOps? Or is it something completely different? The QA role often approaches testing an application through user stories and use cases, working toward verifying that it does everything it is supposed to do. On the other hand, an application security team often comes to the situation from a different perspective; they try to get the system to do something it is not supposed to do, going beyond the user interface and breaking free from documented user scenarios. While these two perspectives may differ significantly, there is still a ton of shared vision for reaching the end goal: rooting out as many bugs as they can to deliver the best possible product. They also share some common challenges as they try to connect and work with the line-of-business owners, architects, IT, operations, and engineering teams. With this in mind, what, specifically, are the synergies, and how can these two teams help each other succeed? Should they be working together, or does it make sense for them to remain separate?Tune in to this episode with guests: Tom Morrissey (a long-time QA and engineering director) and Cassio Goldschmidt (a very active application security expert and OWASP leader) reach back to the past to help us understand how QA has evolved and what lessons the application security professionals can learn from their history.GuestsTom Morrissey, Director of Software EngineeringCassio Goldschmidt, Sr. Director & CISO at ServiceTitan | OWASP Chapter Leader (@CassioGold on Twitter)This Episode's SponsorsImperva: https://itspm.ag/imperva277117988Archer: https://itspm.ag/rsaarchwebEdgescan: https://itspm.ag/itspegwebResourcesLearn more about OWASP: https://owasp.org/ (@owasp on Twitter)To see and hear more Redefining Security content on ITSPmagazine, visit:https://www.itspmagazine.com/redefining-securityAre you interested in sponsoring an ITSPmagazine Channel?https://www.itspmagazine.com/podcast-series-sponsorships

The country's in dire straits indeed, even when not listening to Dire Straits, and it's clear that only two men are literarily capable of breaking down the situation and empowering the masses with knowledge bullets to fell their foes, and those men are ... second-or-maybe-third-tier action protag dude Steven Segal and his pal (?) Tom Morrissey, who wasn't in any movies with DMX. For this roughest of rides, only one man could show up and help us through the deep thickets of paranoid dog-whistling about a version of the Deep State (sic) that lurks just beyond every border, and also in our nation's capital, and also in TV stations and we could go on like this for some time, but luckily (?) Messers. Segal and Morrissey have gone ahead and gone on like that for us, and that man? Why, it's Jeb Lund! Somehow, we make it through a couple hundred pages of magnificently clunky prose, pseudo-positive stereotypes bashing against horrifyingly offensive ones, head shots, manly banter that's torture to read, snake-heavy torture scenes, and more glancingly mentioned right-wing conspiracy theories than was probably healthy. But it's all fun, we promise. So if you're ready to step into the shadows and enter a state that's most deep, please: join us. Keep in touch with Jeb's work here, and listen to his rad podcast, which just may soon feature a guest spot from some fellas you know, here!
