This week we road test two vehicles with strong all-terrain credentials: the 2025 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Hybrid and the 2025 Lexus LX 700h. Co-host Chris Teague put the Toyota through its paces as winter finally turns to spring in Maine. Host Jack Nerad, accompanied by most of his immediate family, tested the luxury Lexus during a extended weekend in Texas. Both vehicles pair a hybrid powertrain with off-road-focused equipment, so there are interesting parallels between the two in addition to their obvious — and not-so-obvious differences. The Tacoma uses the i-FORCE MAX system, combining a turbocharged 2.4-liter engine and electric motor for a total output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. The TRD Pro's standard equipment includes part-time four-wheel drive, FOX QS3 adjustable shocks with rear remote reservoirs, and 33-inch Goodyear tires on 18-inch black alloy wheels. Unique to the TRD Pro, IsoDynamic Performance Seats use an air-over-oil shock system designed to reduce body movement on rough terrain. Exterior elements include a TRD grille, cat-back exhaust, and the exclusive Mudbath paint option. Inside, the Teagues got the benefit of the TRD Pro's 14-inch touchscreen with Toyota's latest multimedia system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and JBL audio. The truck had Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, offering adaptive cruise control, lane tracing assist, road sign recognition, and proactive driving assist with support features like trailer backup guidance and a digital rearview mirror. While the Teagues certainly didn't suffer, the Nerad family basked in the ultra-luxury of the 2025 Lexus LX 700h Overtrail. The full-size premium SUV combines hybrid performance, off-road functionality, and upscale features that set it apart from previous LX editions. Powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with a hybrid system that produces 457 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, it uses a 10-speed automatic transmission and offers full-time 4WD. While it offered a boulevard ride as we discovered on our way to and from Globe Life Field, the 700h Overtrail is loaded for bear on the off-road front. It includes Crawl Control, Active Height Control, and Multi-Terrain Select, plus 33-inch all-terrain tires, locking differentials, and a reinforced platform to support and waterproof the hybrid battery. Inside, the cabin offers massaging, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a wireless phone charger, and a cool box. As we did some house-hunting, we made extensive use of the 12.3-inch touchscreen with Lexus Interface, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cloud-based navigation, and head-up display. Of course, we'll offer even more detail in this episode. Our guest this week is Frank Hanley, Senior Director, Automotive Benchmarking at J.D. Power. In his interview with Host Jack Nerad, he'll be discussing a very important issue going forward — AI in cars, so look for that. We're certain you'll appreciate Frank's insight. Toyota's stalwart mid-size truck entered a new generation with the 2024 model year. Entering its fourth generation, Toyota's popular Tacoma didn't carry along its V6 but did add a hybrid to its portfolio. While the 3.5-liter V6 was replaced with a series of turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder options, the manual transmission stuck with Taco's order sheet. If you don't want to spring for the six-speed manual transmission, an eight-speed automatic is effectively standard. Of course, the top-flight TRD Pro carries on, but Toyota also expanded its Tacoma offerings with an overlanding-focused Trailhunter model.   Sitting across the lot from your would-be next pickup is Toyota's RAV4. The RAV4 entered its fifth generation in 2018 and saw a styling update only a few years ago. While it still might be approaching the end of its generational life, the RAV4 still manages to do what it's supposed to do: easily haul people and stuff. The perennial all-star on the sales charts, Toyota's RAV4 is spread through three powertrains, with a hybrid and plug-in hybrid available, as well as a traditional ICE powertrain. This ICE-only tester uses a 2.5-liter I4 to send 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. On this episode of Talking Cars with the Boss, host Wesley Wren chats with Natalie Neff about her time with the 2024 Toyota Tacoma and 2024 Toyota RAV4. The pair talk about the new Tacoma, Natalie's experience with it, and more. The pair also talk about the RAV4, its continued sales-chart dominance, and some minor gripes with the infotainment system. The two hosts also talk about Toyota's four-cylinder engine family, the departure of the Tacoma's V6, and more. As the Nerads discovered, the Sequoia had the goods to offer dual duty as both a serious off-roader and a practical family hauler. The third-generation Sequoia three-row SUV delivered luxurious comfort, impressive technology and exceptional convenience features. The twin-turbo V6 hybrid powertrain offers plenty of acceleration with 437 horsepower and a whopping 583 pound-feet of torque. Towing a big boat is child's play with an impressive 9,520-pound maximum towing capacity. For the stock-up stop at the big box store, the Sequoia offers a cavernous cargo area and an innovative multi-level cargo system. When it comes to all-terrain capability, the TRD Pro's part-time four-wheel-drive system includes a transfer case, controlled via a button on the center console, to select between 2WD, 4WD high and 4WD low. The multi-link rear and available air suspensions keep the vehicle in firm control. Nerad will recount more of his family's adventures as the road tests unroll. The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is the last of its generation, and all indications are it is going to be missed. This week, Host Jack Nerad got a special chance to say goodbye to the old and respected warrior as he took the wheel for the last time before an all-new 2025 model-year 4Runner arrives. While many are excited about the new 4Runner and its equally new turbocharged powerplant, a similar number seem wistful about the passing of the current generation SUV, which has proven itself tough as a month-old bag of jerky. Some of its toughness stems from its venerable normally aspirated V6 engine, which just seems to keep ticking and ticking no matter how old or what obstacles are thrown in its way. Nerad will tell us more about his last hurrah with the 4Runner in this episode. In our other road test this week, Co-Host Chris Teague will put the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek through its paces. While not as fully off-road capable as the 4Runner, it boasts some impressive off-road chops of its own. But it looks like they won't. In more positive news, BMW has just pulled the curtain away from its all-new 2025 X3 small SUV. We'll have the details and our reactions to its new look. It's been a very long time since Toyota has introduced an all-new Tacoma. At a special sneak preview on the big island of Hawaii, Toyota offered up a first look at the all-new (and it really is all-new) 2024 Tacoma. Here's your first look at TRD Pro, Limited, SR5 Sport and the new Trailhunter for those looking to overland. It will be available with two powertrains including the i-Force MAX hybrid. And Toyota has heard your requests for a better seating position. Sheldon Brown, the chief engineer offers up tons of information on what changes, and just as important, what doesn't.    Toyota provided transportation and lodging for this first look at the 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

Toyota has just announced their 2024 Tacoma available in SR, SR5, TRD Pro, and the much-anticipated Trailhunter packages. The list of capabilities is impressive, including 33" tires, factory lift, OME suspension, ARB bumper, integrated compressor, 2,400 watt inverter, and even a front swaybar disconnect. There are now three motor options, with torque as high as 465 lb-ft. An all-new Sequoia doesn't come around all that often. The third generation has a few surprises. For starters, it packs a hybrid powertrain with a 10-speed transmission. The Toyota Tacoma dominates the mid-size truck world, and it's off-road-ready TRD Pro models likely play a big role in the truck's appeal. Of course, not everyone wants to, or can, spring for the top-of-the-line off-roading model, but still wants some factory off-road chops. The team at Toyota now off a solution for this discerning customer: the Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition. Based on the SR5 Tacoma, this off-road-focused variant is limited to only 4x4 models. The Trail Edition adds front and rear suspension lifts to give you some extra clearance, standard rear locker and more capable wheels and tires. The wheels are bronze 16-inch units wrapped in Goodyear all-terrain rubber. Powering this Tacoma is a standard 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 that sends 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque through a standard six-speed transmission. 2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD PRO Review by John Rush

Because there's a new Tundra pickup, it only makes sense that Toyota is rolling out an all-new Sequoia. The 2023 model replaces the second-generation that's as old as its namesake. And it's a hybrid now! The only powertrain is the i-Force Max twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor sandwiched in between it and the 10-speed transmission. With 3-rows it'll carry up to eight adults (though word is the 2nd row does not slide fore and after and headroom in the 3rd row is reduced). The back row of the new Sequoia features a sliding feature so there's a choice of more cargo room or maximum legroom. There are five trim levels including the new top-dog Capstone model plus an off-road oriented TRD Pro. Tom Voelk gives you a preview of the large roomy SUV that shares its architecture with Tundra, Land Cruiser and Lexus LX 600. No pricing or fuel economy ratings have been announced yet.

While unibody crossovers are taking over the auto industry, the body-on-frame SUV of yore is getting harder to find. That said, Toyota's 4Runner has been since the 1980s and has stuck to its objective of being a capable off-roader. This fifth-generation 4Runner is on the older side of new vehicles, with it hitting the street in 2010. Even though that means the 4Runner's replacement is probably coming sooner than later, the 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro gives you all the capabilities of a body-on-frame SUV without some of the drawbacks. Unlike the more open-air-friendly Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco, the 4Runner is strictly an enclosed machine, and the TRD Pro variant gives it some serious off-road chops. Powering this 4Runner is a 4.0-liter V6 that makes 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque. What pushes the ZR2 above the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro? How much better is the Soul EV over the Chevrolet Bolt? The pair answer these questions, and more, on this week's episode.

In the studio this time around is a battle of the off-roaders, the 2020 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro and the 2020 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. We have some differing opinions. Also, we have the Nissan Altima AWD, Ram EcoDiesel and the Honda CR-V Black Edition that's exclusive to Canada. 

The Toyota Tacoma pickup truck has been around in some form or another since 1995, and it's been the best-selling midsize pickup for 13 years running. But as America's smaller truck segment heats up with newcomers like the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator, the Tacoma can't just rest on its laurels.Thankfully, the Tacoma receives a number of updates for 2020. And while they don't radically shake up the Tacoma's formula, these new-for-2020 niceties make the midsize truck easier to live with than ever before.First and foremost, the Tacoma gets a small but necessary tech upgrade. Base SR models use a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, but all other Tacomas get an 8-inch head unit, all of which finally support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Amazon Alexa. The rest of the multimedia system carries over without any major updates.Elsewhere in the cabin, the 2020 Tacoma gets a power driver's seat on all trims but the base SR. You might not think that's a big deal, but people have been asking for this for ages.The Tacoma's biggest updates are actually found outside, where most models get a new grille and headlight design. The top-shelf TRD Pro, however, retains its older grille with big "Toyota" badging across the middle. That said, the TRD Pro gets new LED headlamps with sequential turn signals, which freshens up the otherwise-carryover front fascia. Around back, the Tacoma's taillights receive small design tweaks.The Tacoma TRD Pro adds a new Army Green color to its palette, and it definitely looks better dirty than clean. This is an assessment I can make with confidence, following three days of off-roading in the Tacoma TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road models, where these trucks took me from the rocks of Moab, Utah, to the gorgeous mountain passes of Ouray, Colorado.Both the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road Tacomas have Toyota's Multi-Terrain Select function, with options for Mud and Sand, Loose Rock, Rock and Dirt, Mogul and Rock. Out in Moab, it's the last of those modes that I use most, and it helps mitigate wheel spin pretty well on slick rocks, helping to give me as much traction as possible. In fact, I only find myself having to engage my rear differential lock a few times.These Tacoma models also come with a five-level Crawl Control system, which can keep the truck at a steady speed while off-roading. Unfortunately, the system is so loud in its action that I find myself turning it off after just a short while.Despite that newly adjustable driver's seat, it's still kind of hard to get a sense of where your wheels are in the Tacoma -- the long hood is the most prevalent thing I see out the windshield. The good news is, the TRD Pro and TRD Off-Road models get a new Multi-Terrain Monitor that displays a video of what's happening underneath the truck. The bad news, however, is that the video resolution is pretty terrible. A high-definition camera would be a huge help here.

We love the whole truck thing – Rugged, roomy, and built.   Not long ago, a customer called to tell us his Tundra had driven a million miles. He brought the truck in and our engineers pulled it apart bolt by bolt in order to learn just what a million miles looks like on the inside of a vehicle.   So, as we anticipate the roll-out of updates to the fall 2020 TRD Pro models – Tundra, Tacoma, 4Runner, and Sequoia – we thought it was time to celebrate the glories of the truck. We’ll talk to the people to engineer and build trucks, and we’ll hear the story of the greatest truck feat in Toyota history: the Shuttle Pull.   Because it’s never a question of cars or trucks. It’s always going to be cars and trucks. I mean, when asked cake or pie, isn’t the right answer cake and pie?   The People Who Build Trucks   Our first guest is Mike Sweers, the Executive Chief Engineer for the Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma and 4Runner vehicle programs at Toyota Motor North America, Research and Development (TMNA R&D). The role of the chief engineer is similar to that of the director of a movie. The chief engineer is responsible for the vision and the execution of a vehicle; he is the first owner, the target driver, and the ultimate gearhead of that model.   So, not surprisingly, Sweers is a sought-after truck and SUV guru at Toyota. Since 2017 he’s been in Japan helping to translate why we love trucks so much here in America – big, thundering trucks – and ensuring that we are designing and building the best and safest trucks for our customers.   Sweers is followed by Kevin Voelkel, the new President of TMMTX, which is Toyota’s truck plant in Texas. This is where every single Toyota truck is produced, for the entire world. There are 31 katashikis, or different variations, of trucks that come off the line, making it the highest variation of vehicles on a single line in North America.   Toyota Shuttle Pull   But the truck love doesn’t end there because we one more tale to tell: the story of the Tundra and the space shuttle.   In 2012 the California Science Center had a problem – and Toyotans love to solve problems. The space shuttle Endeavor was to be taken out of service and installed at the Center as part of its permanent exhibit.
