Years ago I had some straw bales I'd used initially as fall décor that ended up in my chicken coop. The bales were used partially as a wind break all winter and partially as a roost. Well, chickens do what chickens do when they roost and by the spring of the following year those straw bales were full of nitrogen-rich chicken poop and starting to fall apart. So, I moved the out of the coop, watered the down really well for about a week, and planted a bunch of plants into them. This was my first introduction to straw bale gardening and it worked wonderfully! The nitrogen from the chicken manure had kickstarted the decomposition process of the straw, providing essential nutrients for the microbes that do that work, and the decomp of the straw inside the bale created a fertile growing medium. I expanded the gardens quite a bit after that, as you all know, and haven't worked with straw bales as a growing medium since. But this year, that changes. I've got a new spot I'm putting together behind my greenhouse with eight planter boxes already in place, but there's also a fence at the back of that space I want to both cover and use as a trellis. I don't want something permanent against that fence so I'm jumping back into straw bale gardening. Today on Just Grow Something we'll talk about how to use straw bales as a growing container and medium. I don't have naturally conditioned bales this year, so we'll talk about the process I'll need to go through to get those bales ready. I'll also cover the benefits of gardening in bales, what to watch out for, what plants do well with this method, and how to maintain them. By the end of the episode I think you'll be convinced that straw bales are an effective way to increase the growing space in your garden without needing a permanent solution. Let's dig in! If you're planning to put in new fruit trees, bushes, or canes in your garden the best time of year, generally, is spring. We want the soil to warm up enough that the roots of the plants will begin to seek out water and nutrients as soon as placed in the ground with as little transplant shock as possible. But, if we have existing fruit trees, bushes, or canes then any maintenance on those trees should be done before the soil begins to really warm up and the plants come out of dormancy. This is usual sometime between late fall and early spring, which means most of the northern hemisphere is primed for these tasks right now. Today on Just Grow Something, we're going to talk about those tasks and how to tackle them: pruning, fertilizing, and moving your established plants if it's necessary to do so. This is one of those tasks that can scratch the itch for getting out into the garden when maybe it's still too early to really be planting much and they're tasks that are important for us to get the best yield possible from those plants. My Link Tree can be found at: https://linktr.ee/CauseofDeathpod Today, we're going to talk about whipworm. I chose this particular parasite because my dog, Sweet Pea was diagnosed with it a few weeks ago despite having worm meds every month. We'll begin this story, as usual, with etiology and pathology. Whipworm is a parasitic roundworm. Its scientific name is Trichuris trichiura, it's phylum is Nematoda, Class Enoplea, Domain Eukaryota. It's in the Family Trichuridae, Genus Trichuris and Kingdom Animalia. The body of the worm is shaped like a whip with a long, thick handle-like structure at one end, the anus, that tapers off to a thin whip-like structure at the other end. It's this end that attaches to the cecum, but we'll get to that. For those of you who love my dog, she's a special guest on this episode. She's talking about her experience with whipworm. And her birthday party. This month we're talking a lot about seed starting and we can't talk about starting seeds without talking about heat and light. Seeds sprout more quickly and efficiently when they've got the correct soil temperatures and the easiest way to do this is with a seedling heat mat. It's not a requirement, though, so we'll also talk about some ways you can up the ante on the soil temperatures during seed starting without a heat mat. Once those seeds do sprout and you're nurturing those little seedlings the correct light can make all the difference, and usually even the sunniest window in your house just isn't going to cut it. That means we need do a little investing in some lights to help our seedlings along. Today on Just Grow Something we'll explore soil heating options and various types of grow lights, including the most economical and even tabletop solutions. Let's dig in! *Question of the Month: “What is your most successful crop and why?” This could be a specific variety of something that outproduces all the others, the plant that you love the most, or the crop that grows fantastically well for you without fail every single year. I met Ben Whatley officially in 2020, just as the Covid Pandemic was ramping up, and, as a farmer, Ben was reserving time at the commercial kitchen I used for my jam business, and was asked to help rent out, so we talked - and he was SO cool. So much to share, and so much knowledge and passion for caring for the earth he was responsible for. I felt that instantly, and he was one of my first thoughts when starting this podcast, because he is so open about a lot of things.Let me tell you I learned a LOT in this conversation! I had no idea how much Ben would share, and how cool of a story he had! Languages, car breaking down, crop failure, but also tons of great wins - he's had some of his employees for years! They have a great attitude toward crap weather. He has 2 cutie baby kids (I found out about # 2 just before recording - he's 11 weeks old!), and a beautiful life partner, and supportive family. So many things inspire me about Ben and his farming practices - I'll let him tell them over these 2 episodes, but one of my favorite things if their dedication to use less plastic - and that they have Anna, who loves trying out recipes with the produce and sharing (we'll talk about it in the 2nd episode), but also how the farmers in Maine all share info and help each other out with new ideas and tips to get past hurdles - for instance, this past summer's deluge of rain...So many topics discussed - don't miss out!If you want to learn more about Whatley Farm's practices and sign up for their newsletter for recipes, etc, check out https://whatleyfarm.com/Their Facebook Page is here: https://www.facebook.com/whatleyfarmAnd Instagram is here: https://www.instagram.com/whatleyfarm/Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. If you're planning to grow flowers alongside your vegetables this year, there may be some additional steps you'll need to take when getting those started. Most annual flowers are started in ways very similar to our annual vegetable plants. But some flowers are trickier to start, especially perennials. And some can't easily be started from seed and need to be propagated using other methods. Today on Just Grow Something we're going to talk about the easiest flowers to start from seed and those “special” flower seeds, the ones that need a little more time and attention than our standard annuals. Shoot, This moment has been a long time coming for me, and I couldn't be more happy to share this with you all - I'm such a big fan of Sonya Parenti - Miss Love Terra on Instagram, and her hard work to educate people and ask for mindfulness when purchasing cheap clothing, to be wary of its journey and consequences. I think I pride myself in being somewhat of a 'system bucker,' and fashion in general is not my thing (if you see me in pics I'm usually wearing a flannel shirt and jeans), so I enjoy this poking at the fashion worlf maybe a little more than I should...These are Sonya's own words from my guest form:"I'm full of enthusiasm about joining this podcast because, as an experienced professional in the fashion industry, I have a deep knowledge about the industry's complexities and challenges. I believe that transforming the fashion business is crucial in our collective efforts to address global warming. This podcast, hosted by Amy, serves as a powerful platform to have meaningful conversations and inspire change in ourselves and others. By joining forces, we can boost our impact, educating and motivating listeners to make choices that favour ethical and sustainable fashion. My goal is to use this opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future, sharing insights and strategies that can guide us towards a greener, more responsible fashion industry."And I just LOVED this (my fave question on the guest form) "The message I want listeners to take away is an understanding of the impact of collective actions on the environment. The quote 'RELAX IT'S JUST ONE CHEAP T-SHIRT', SAID 8 BILLION PEOPLE, highlights that while individual choices may seem small, when multiplied across billions of people, they have a huge impact on society and the environment. It's a call to be more conscious of our buying decisions, understanding that our demand for cheap, fast fashion contributes to unsustainable practices, environmental degradation, and poor labor conditions. The key takeaway for listeners is that people have the power to change big issues with our small daily choices."Really, Sonya doesn't need me to add anything to this at all. Please listen for the full conversation! Here is Sonya's website to learn more about her work: htSupport the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. Soil blocking is a seed starting technique that uses small blocks of soil or seed starting mix. There are no containers, no small plastic cells, just the soil itself. The benefit of soil blocking is, of course, you're not keeping a bunch of plastic containers around to start your seeds in, but also there is no chance for the roots of the seedlings to become bound by a container. The plants roots will reach the edge of the soil block and simply stop growing until the block is planted, the roots come into contact with more soil, and can take off growing again. This reduces the transplant shock. Today on Just Grow Something I brought back our flower farmer friend, Kathy Gormandy, to talk about how she uses soil blocking on her farm. We also talk about her new retail space, the importance of locally grown florals, and more. It's a conversation that has me taking a second look at trying soil blocking again this year. Let's dig in. Welcome back to Part 2 of Mara Mennicken's conversation- we get a little bit deep, and it is fun to see so much passion from Mara - and it's much more than chocolate alone. Mara talks about social sustainability, and if you're trying to imagine what that's like in your head, just listen here - it's at the beginning of this segment, and it's SO good.I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?"Put your dollar where your heart is! *This conversation was long, but I couldn't bare to take anything out, so I split it into 2 weeks, so make sure to listen next week for the wrap up!*Mara Mennicken and I met on a podcasting Facebook page and it took me a fraction of a second reading about her sustainable chocolate business to know I had to have her on the podcast to tell me all about it!Mara is from Germany, but came to British Columbia as part of a school exchange program, and knew she wanted to be there. She's done very well for herself, it seems! Her thoughts on sustainability are a little more broad than some people's, and I'm totally here for it. Her company is sustainable, but more than just physical, like packaging and product, but social sustainability is very important to her, and she'll explain how and why. And speaking of important, I ask the question below to everyone in my guest form, and I just loved her answer:Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?"Put your dollar where your heart is! Every dollar spent is a mini investment in the people and their mission who are behind the product or service- Buying local, organic, or from social enterprises makes an impact!"And to that, I'll just say AMEN! I approached Tessa Terry on Facebook when I saw her post about her RV renovation business Alchemy RV Renovations because I was so intrigued - then I followed her on Instagram - oh my gosh, if you're on Instagram, you need to follow her! These RVs are 100% renovated and made brand new on the inside, and she shines them up on the outside, too! They go from basic , and possibly used and run down, to roomy and luxurious when Tessa is done with them!Tessa has been in this business for about 2 years - TWO YEARS. She is booked up this year already! She has had several requests to renovate RVs in Australia! She just has a real gift for small space design that is unmatched. Wait til you hear her tell her story - if you're listening only, I bet you can imagine my face in your head when she talks about her HS graduation... Tessa is married, is a mom of 2, and grew up in a family that bought 'fixer-upper' houses, and her parents have had a lampshade business for about 30 years, so she totally gets the value of working with your hands. A quote from her website: "When I was little, I used to say “If men could go to the moon, this stuff on earth is cake” - Nothing is impossible, sometimes it just needs a new floor plan." She has designed her own life, and she's giving RVs and other rigs a new life, which is so cool. Here's Tessa's instagram to follow: https://www.instagram.com/alchemyrvrenovations/And her website: https://www.alchemyrvrenovations.com/Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. I am so thrilled to share this conversation with you guys - I have wanted to have Hannah Semler on the podcast since the beginning! I'm a big fan of FarmDrop - I'm both a customer and a vendor, and I love having the ability to try items from several different local farmers that are bringing their product practically to me! Hannah will say it better, so I'll leave her to it.Hannah also hosted a podcast called What is American Food, because she is so passionate about the origins - AND she was working with a food waste rescue group as well. She also started a FarmDrop delivery program for Seniors who are homebound, so they, too can be nourished by our skilled farmers. Listen to the episode for more about all of this, and why Farmdrop is so important to her!Hannah and her trusty sidekick Barley travel the state of Maine together, making sure things are organized and operating smoothly when customers come to pick up their goods. There are several dropoff/pickup Hubs throughout the state, and trying to get the vendors' products spread to other hubs than the one closest to them can't be easy! You're going to love Hannah - I can't imagine not loving her passion for what she does! Call to Action: I'd love to share this episode wide, and see if we can get some interest in other areas of the country for FarmDrop! Do you know of an area lacking a farmers market, or are you interested in being a FarmDrop vendor? The reach is WIDE with these products!FarmDrop website is here - check out all the options available at different locations, and see how cool it would be to start your own or be part of one! Reach out to Hannah with inquiries about FarmDrop! https://farmdrop.us/Farmdrop is on Instagram and Facebook as @farmdropusSupport the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. I know I keep saying that this episode is SO good, but I really feel like it is - and this conversation is no different - I had such a great time talking to Jen Joray of Eastern River Farm - I loved hearing their process of going from city dwellers to farmers, because I feel like it's a dream of many - at least mine, but I have a feeling that others are feeling it, too. So this can be somewhat of a 'blueprint' of a path - or an example of how it can be done - and successfully! They are teaching their daughters all the aspects of the farm, and have them assist with as much as possible. The farm business is mainly wedding flowers - did you see that coming? You may want to consider after listening to Jen talk about them!Jen and her husband were doing their best to provide for their 2 daughters as teachers in Massachusetts when her Chemist husband one day came home and said " I think I need to be a farmer." And so they made that happen. But the journey wasn't instant, which is helpful - she documents it well, for anyone wanting to follow their lead...Jen is an educator through and through, and has done SO much research into soil amendments and animal husbandry and planting and what plants work well, and ALL the farmy subjects, and, educator that she is, would absolutely LOVE to have to opportunity to share the info and experience that she's gained - seriously! Reach out to me, or reach out to her with any questions, and if she doesn't know the answer, she'll want to learn, and will find the answer for you! Please check out https://www.easternriverfarm.com and/or on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/easternriverfarm/or Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Easternriverfarm/to see and learn more. This is the last episode of 2023 - thank you so much for listening! I was recently a guest on Brenda Simmons' podcast Be You: Your Story Your Purpose, and getting to know Brenda was such a nice time, and we really bonded over so many things, so we decided to continue the conversation over here. Brenda has so many things to talk about, like growing up close to her grandparents and learning from them, and the internships she did at school, how she's feeding her own family... we learned that we were both in Utah at the same time (I was only there for a year)!Brenda's podcast is fairly new, and she's doing so well with it - 2 episodes weekly! She has really great topics to encourage women/people to find their own story to share to help others. Here's the link to it: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thebeyoupodcastI just loved this and had to keep it - from the guest form: Is there a specific message you'd like listeners to come away with?"If you don't have a relationship with earth, you won't want to take care of it. Barbara Tibbetts and I met sort of by chance on Linkedin, when a friend (shout out to Ande Lyons!) tagged me in Barbara's post about the Sustainability event she hosted in Nantucket this summer, and we've been talking regularly ever since - we found that we have a lot in common; we're both trying to spread the word about sustainability and that we should all be making more of an effort...Here is a quote from her podcast guest form: "We can all make choices to live sustainably with the correct knowledge and make a difference for our health and the health and well being of our planet." Does that sound like someone that I'd want to hang out with, or what?Barbara has started developing a website - a resource, to search different ways of being sustainable - it's still in the works, and possibly always will be, but check out Living and Playing in a Sustainable world here: https://www.lapsnow.com/Barbara is currently focusing a lot of her energy learning about PFAS, and trying to repair some of the damage done during our non-stick everything phase. She's so passionate, and is doing some excellent work; listen for more in this episode! You can find Barbara on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/livandplay She's also on Linkedin here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/barbara-tibbetts-12a0326b/ And her Youtube channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Vd14AZwYV0oPbbI8O0XzASupport the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. This is my 2nd December - wow! This is a toughie, as I'm in a bit of a tender place these days, but most of this year has been pretty amazing, and I have so much to be grateful for - namely the incredible people I've had the honor of speaking with and learning from, and the great folks who keep the social media lively and a fun place to hang out - I love getting to know you all!The end of the year has taken a turn I hadn't expected, and I'll be making some changes of my own, but I don't intend to change much in terms of the podcast, BUT I do have some thoughts of things I'd like to incorporate, in light of my current life situation, starting with a Menopause Panel, to discuss this taboo subject that leaves us feeling broken and crazy (these are my words - it's possible that everyone doesn't feel this way, but they might) and just not knowing what is happening in their own body. I think this would be helpful for for anyone who interacts with people who are experiencing menopause, so don't think it's aimed at anyone specific. If you'd like to be on this panel, or add anything to be discussed, please be in touch with me. I'm feeling the need to be loud about this, and also bring to light other personal sustainability topics, so send me your ideas. The year isn't over yet! I've got some super interesting folks these last few weeks, and into the new year - don't miss out!Thank you for being with me this first full year of podcasting - I'm loving this so much!Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. Philomene Cauchois is just the most graceful, easy to be with person, and I could've spent hours talking with her. Philomene has her own podcast called Une Touche de Créativité Pour Tout Changer (A Touch of Creativity to Change Everything), to help people to find creative, fun ways to reduce waste and to just tread lighter in the world, and I'm here for it! She's been updating her own website to be ready for this episode to air, knowing that my listeners are mainly English speaking, and she's prepared some really wonderful things, including some of her favorite, regularly used recipes to share! Philomene is practically zero waste, even with 2 sons and a spouse, she makes almost everything, or buys from neighbors or local farms, she repurposes, gardens, homeschools, and really focuses on being light with her footprint. Kathryn Garland is a super energetic mom, spouse and newer homesteader who is so real, and in the best way - I love how she lays it out. I also LOVE that she's in British Columbia. Literally on my tiny bucket list of 2 places I need to go someday! She shares a great message of start where you are and expand as you can, which is so simple, yet really works for everything, right? So profound. At least for me. Kathryn shares their beginning story, which is only about a year and a half, and how insanely quickly they scaled up (she's not an "ease in" type of person), and how that's working. She's also about to release her podcast, called Homespun, which I'm SO excited for! She said November 20, so be on the lookout - I sure will be!We do touch on some of the harder parts of homesteading (animal death), so I want you to be aware if you're extra sensitive to that. I needed a second to compose myself, but it's part of the journey, and it happens and is important to be prepared for. This is part of Kathryn's Instagram Bio: " Home based living (food, education, homesteading, healing) Loving life and simple pleasures"I love that so much! Oh my gosh, this was such a fascinating conversation with Kathy Jentz! I learned so much about ground cover, talking about her new book that's out called Groundcover Revolution, and she also loves talking about Urban Gardening(her previous book is about this), since she lives just outside the city in Maryland, and her gorgeous cats - you know I love checking out everyones' cats (check out the YouTube video to see them all - they're huge and stunning!)! She told me about saving lettuce seeds, which is something I've been wondering about for years, and taught me about lettuce seeds in general - GAME CHANGING stuff!!Kathy is a really busy lady! She's written 2 books, publishes the monthly Washington Gardener magazine (and award winning publication for Mid Atlantic growers!), and has for many years, is President of a number of flower clubs - OH, and she also has a podcast! Brekke (rhymes with Becky) Wagoner's message with Sustainable Prepping is a little different than others and I'm so here for it! She's talking about preparing for a disaster or emergency, and just having a little extra to fall back on, to ease your mind in times of stress. In her own words, "With global climate change impacting our weather to be more intense more often, having an emergency preparedness plan isn't just for doomsday preppers. It's common sense and will allow you to be confident in the midst of a crisis." Of course for me, growing up in the Mormon church, preparedness is taught, so I get it, and a lot of older generations may as well, but her aim is the younger generations, to teach that calm in the midst of crisis to the next generation as well. I was all in to hear that Candida Lange was thrifting for a business, and I couldn't wait to hear all about how that worked, but when we were talking, she opened up this WHOLE other beautiful can of worms that changed everything for me. I cannot wait for y'all to hear how much heart Dida has for supporting thrift stores and church/yard sales and why. She has the best comeback story I've heard in a very long time, if ever, and how she is using it to empower others and change the world, has changed me, and I hope it will you as well. Microgreens can be grown at any time of the year with very little in the way of equipment and it is super easy to get started. For many of us home gardeners, the season for salad greens can be short. And I don't know about you, but I still crave fresh greens in the wintertime. The easiest answer to supplementing our greens is to grow microgreens indoors. So, today on Just Grow Something we're getting started with growing microgreens; what supplies you need, which are the easiest ones for beginners to grow, and what you need to know about selecting seeds to use as microgreens. Let's dig in. Episode Resources and References: Check out the selection of microgreens from today's sponsor, True Leaf Market! Menopause... There's so much no one ever told me about this stage of life. In this week's episode of the Simple Doesn't Mean Easy podcast, host Michelle Visser opens up about her personal experience with menopause. She shares the symptoms and challenges she has faced over the years, which encompasses a lot more than hot flashes. From weight gain, to dry mouth, brain fog, irritability, tooth decay, and other things you have probably never associated with menopause, Michelle offers practical solutions she has found to personally help her in each area. Some might not come with surprise, like drinking plenty of water, eating real food, and exercising consistently. But other solutions might surprise you, from consuming adaptogens like ashwagandha and maca powder, to enjoying a specific tea blend and a specific healthy hot chocolate mix (links below). She also emphasizes the importance of managing stress levels and getting enough sleep. Michelle aims to provide helpful information and reassurance that you are not alone or "crazy" if you are going through some of these symptoms from menopause that most folks simply don't tell you. You guys, this is a big deal - for me, at least. I think that solar energy is such an easy way to harness energy - it's just a big investment... BUT - have you noticed the huge solar farms on the side of the road over the last several years? We're talking about those today! Tony Napolitano didn't say "I'm the CEO of Maine Community Solar," when he filled out my guest form, but I'm so glad it was him I got to talk to- he was so great, and has so much passion for his business. Maine Community Solar's job is mainly education, so they're ready for your questions! Their goal, and community solar in general, is to set up folks who don't have the means to have a full solar array, or don't own their home, to be able to enjoy the benefits of solar energy, and to engage more renewable energy in the regions. I'll let him tell you more - just listen in! I had a huge AHA here, and I am on fire right now! What did past generations know that modern society has forgotten? Our grandparents had the satisfaction of making do with what they had (even when it was nothing fancy) versus our modern idea of a new $1,000 phone every year and replacement appliances every few years.Follow the story of a boy named Thurman, who went to a 1-room schoolhouse & had to quit school in 9th grade to make sure his family could eat and worked multiple blue collar jobs to make sure his kids had a better life. And Dorothy, a grandmom who lived to be 98 and was still active, fearless, and connected to her large family right up until the end. What shaped Thurman and Dorothy's character? In this episode, we're diving into another difficult topic. This episode of the Simple Doesn't Mean Easy podcast focuses on Doing Things Scared... if we should, what it looks like, and some genuine results that I've seen along the way in my effort to make myself do things scared.I share stories from my own life about starting projects like gardening, raising chickens, making maple syrup, and more, even when I didn't feel fully prepared or knowledgeable.I want to encourage you to not over-prepare or overthink things, but to just dive in and learn as you go, even if it means making some mistakes along the way. Will taking small steps and gradually gaining experience along the way eventually lead to achieving your dreams? Let's chat about this and more in this episode.Oh, and I start and end with two very different stories. Make sure you catch the final story at the end. Happy International Podcasting Day, everyone! To honor the incredible community that podcasting is, and the amazing small world that I apparently live in, I recorded a fun episode with my new podcasting friend Amy Lewis, who also lives in my town, and has a super awesome podcast called Pop Culture Retrospective, to honor her older sister, who she lost a few years ago. It's such a fun podcast, and I've wanted to be wanted to be a guest on her podcast since I started listening, so this was a dream! Amy is the best host, and knows SO many facts about pop culture! I remember our first real conversation - I had commented on a few of her episodes previously, but she commented on my episode about Springworks Farm in Lisbon Maine, and said one of her students worked there, and she was happy to learn more about it, and my brain was spinning in so many directions, thinking that this podcaster that I'd been following could be local--Amy quizzed me on 90s trivia, and 90s pees, I let you down, I'm so sorry. In my defense, I was attempting to appreciate country music in Utah, and working in the 90s, so not really in "the scene" (like I was in High School lol), but Amy didn't tell me I sucked...Please find Amy and Pop Culture Retrospective where you listen to podcasts - her website is here https://www.popcultureretrospective.com/She's also on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/popcultureretrospective/Amy is also an amazing photographer! I loved this conversation with Jennifer Stalley, whose life is just so interesting! Jennifer lives in California with her spouse and daughter, loves horses and gardening and works in marketing. She came to a stark realization during the Pandemic that sparked Meemzy Magic toys. She was purchasing sensory toys for her daughter who was very young during the Pandemic, since everyone was home all day, but still had to work - she decided she was able to make them herself, in a more sustainable way, that was every bit as entertaining, if not more so. She tells this story SO much better than I do, so listen in here! This conversation was so fun for me, as I am enjoying so much getting to know Stephanie Bolduc, whose dad is my cousin. They live in the UK, so I don't get to see them often, and I didn't know Stephanie really at all until this year! Stephanie is very involved in environmental issues, and she takes her footprint on the earth very seriously, but in the most gracious way. She has discovered foraging recently and really enjoys finding new uses and value in what we see outside. She is also learning about hot compost (I didn't know about it either, if you were thinking that), and lets us know what she's learning. Hear all about it in the episode!Stephanie went to school to work in theater (is it theatre in the UK?), and was creating costumes and theater sets, so she's super crafty and creative. Julia Goldstein is a real gem of a human, and I'm so glad we connected! Julia is an author in Washington state and lifelong learner who loves to explain complex subjects, who also is very passionate about sustainability, and she combines the two things to help us to get to the bottom of the mysteries of recycling and other areas - how awesome is that? She's written a few short books to explain recycling and composting, and she has a blog where she offers updated information on things she's currently excited about. If you subscribe to this blog when you check out her website, she offers a really great gift!In Julia's own words: "I believe that our society needs to change how we make all kinds of products, and individuals can influence businesses through our buying decisions. I can share the changes I have made in the past 5-10 years as I've learned more about packaging, composting, recycling, and similar topics."Here's Julia's website: https://juliagoldsteinauthor.com (don't forget to subscribe to her blog! Gosh, did I have a great time talking with Michael Andersen about living in his RV! Life is so much more than living in an RV, though, and that's where it got really interesting. I want to leave you with something to gain from listening, but know that Michael has quite the story, and is making the most of this time now. I'm hoping to get to meet him in person when he travels to Maine this fall!Michael is a website designer, and also created a website for his fellow Nomads, to help them find farmers' markets and good food, and to share great places to travel and see, as well as a way to connect with others. Check out https://travelinggatherings.com/I was so impressed with how much thought Michael had invested in this adventure, and how much his life has changed, living in a 180 square foot RV in the best ways - listen here for details! I was excited to get to talk with Liz McDade, because I'm a daydream crafter, but don't give myself time to learn to do new things. I had no idea who I was speaking with, though! Liz is no joke on the crafting and sustainability front! Check out this link of speaking events she's done! https://notraceshop.com/media/Liz is also SO easy to speak with, and I love that she is so real about perfection. She has a shop where you can buy some crafted low-waste items, but she is moving toward teaching these days, which is an extra gift, to learn and keep the skills you've learned!AND, for any old school TV fans out there, Liz and her brother have a podcast where they watch the TV show Columbo 1 episode at a time and talk about it - it's called Trench Coat, Cigar, Peugeot: Wandering with Columbo! Here's the link to listen to her podcast! https://trenchcoatcigar.libsyn.com/Liz's YouTube channel to learn how to craft a more sustainable life: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnIjx8fXbc5vJmchPJqkUwQLiz's Instagram page is here: https://www.instagram.com/no_trace_shop/And her website is here: https://notraceshop.com/Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. Liz Shipton's story is a fascinating one; she's a musician and author, and her partner is a sailing instructor, so they bought a boat and are spending 3-5 YEARS sailing the world. So far they're almost 2 years in, and she's published several books out of a 9 book series. Oh, and they have their dog Ayloy, with them, too (sorry I called her Loki - that's the boat's name)!Liz's books are based loosely on their adventures, and also on climate change; which she'll talk about how that's affecting this adventure... Book one is called Salt, and is available on Amazon/Kindle, found here: https://www.amazon.com/Salt-Spicy-Dystopian-Fantasy-Thalassic-ebook/dp/B0BZN2K9F9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=Z1E06B18BOO1&keywords=liz+shipton+salt&qid=1691151408&sprefix=liz+shipton%2Caps%2C131&sr=8-1I love stories like Liz's, because her love of the earth and the beauty that surrounds her also motivates to take better care of it. (There is a method I'm working toward). Wow, this was an eye opening conversation for me! I realized that my expectation of food sustainability is very childish (child-like?), thinking that just growing good food and making sure that everyone can eat is all we need to know. Ben Adolph and Beth Robertson-Martin are the Co-Founders of Merge Impact, and they are crunching data to assist farmers in this food system "situation" that we're in, and thank goodness for that! There is really so much more to growing food on a large scale, and what growers have been doing for many years is not nurturing the earth, so Merge Impact is encouraging change to heal the earth, to provide more nutrient dense food for everyone, and to create biodiversity. Listen here to hear them say it better than I can!I was also happily corrected with Beth's answer and Ben's agreement about what sustainability means to them, and I agree wholeheartedly!SO much great info shared - listen in to this great conversation here!** NOTE TO FARMERS: Please check this out - this is a FREE service to farmers of all sizes!**Check out Merge Impact's website to learn more: https://mergeimpact.com/ Here is the company's Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/merge-impact/ Here is Ben's Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ben-adolph-b7737586/ Here is Beth's Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/beth-robertson-martin-a692b94/ Support the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. I realize this is not the topic we're used to hearing about on this podcast, but it's a necessary one, and I'm happy to support it. Veronica Life and I met virtually at Podfest Global in April, when she talked about domestic violence and stole everyone's heart. The Numospect folks that I've been working with for the last year were also affected, and every Friday on their live show (1:30-2:30pm EST on all socials) they have Veronica on to talk about domestic violence, to make it a less taboo subject, because people need to not feel alone in their experiences. Veronica shares some sobering numbers, as well as her own story, and why we need to make this a priority. What I've been most struck by is her goal to change a person's experience from shame, and leave them feeling JOY and hope. There's a lot of work to get there, but I'm inspired by the work that is happening with The Purple it Up for Domestic Violence Awareness people. There are many ways to help support this organization! From money donations, to purchasing merch (the shirts are unbelievably comfy!), to offering services or home space for victims, taking the Purple it up Challenge to sharing the message, to being a friend and supporting those who need it.I'm inspired by the work that Veronica and her team do daily, and want to support them in any way that I can, like featuring a podcast episode on domestic violence. I have taken the pledge to not drop the ball on domestic violence awareness - will you join me?Here's a link to their website: http://www.purpleitup.org/Purpleitup%20Our%20Events.htmlHere's a promo video for Purple It Up! https://youtu.be/9qfUs2gOTfASupport the showPlease follow Grounded In Maine podcast on Instagram here , or on Facebook hereYouTube channel link is here You can DM me there, post, or email me at amysgardenjam@gmail.com. Lyme disease can cause a range of symptoms, including fever, rash, joint pain, and fatigue, even arthritis, heart problems, and neurological issues. In the last two episodes, we spoke to Devon Dionne, Adrienne Nolan-Smith, and Robin Shirley who all used varying combinations of nutrition, detoxification, and alternative medicine to heal their Lyme disease. In this episode, you will hear Dr. Stephan Cabral give a listener advice on her Lyme disease. Then we chat with Aimee Valpone, who shares her harrowing story of overcoming Lyme and how changing her diet and learning how to detox saved her life when she was at death's door. Dr. Stephen Cabral is a board-certified Naturopath, Ayurvedic, Functional Medicine and Integrative Health Practitioner. He is the founder, creator and teacher of the Integrative Health Practitioner Institute. In today's episode Dr. Cabral answer's a listener question about Lyme, Sibo and the FODMAP diet. Then we will hear from Amie Valpone and her journey to heal. For years, Aimee suffered from various ailments, including Lyme disease and PCOS, and conventional medicine failed to provide a diagnosis. Doctors treated her symptoms with pill after pill, but nothing seemed to work. Even when she was lying in a hospital bed with morphine dripping into her arm, her HR department contacted her to say they thought she was bluffing, because she was blogging. This was the moment when Aimee decided that if she survived, she would dedicate her life to helping others. And that's exactly what she did. As Aimee began detoxing, many emotional issues surfaced, including the trauma from years of looking for someone to diagnose her, not being believed, and searching for answers. She started to detox her entire life, including holistic practices such as cranial sacral therapy and energy healing. Aimee shares her story on her blog to help others heal themselves. She guides them through health tests, including one that checks for the MTHFR gene, without which the body cannot properly detoxify. She emphasizes that high toxicity is one of the main reasons the body gets ill. This is where detoxing is incredibly powerful because it essentially gets the bad stuff out of your body. Eating organic foods helps the body cope with the bombardment of toxins. If you're interested in learning more about Aimee's journey and the power of detoxing, be sure to check out her book, Eating Clean: The 21-Day Plan to Detox, Fight Inflammation, and Reset Your Body. Robin was diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and chronic Lyme disease when she was just 11 years old. She suffered from painful joints, inflammation, rashes, fatigue, fevers. The heavy medication she was prescribed caused digestive problems, nausea and hair loss. The drugs also suppressed Robin's immune system, causing frequent infections and affecting all parts of her life. At just 23, Robin's life looked set towards pain and disability. However, now 27, she's healthy, free from pharmaceuticals and running the company of her dreams. The journey to health wasn't simple—at the time, childhood autoimmune disorders weren't common and doctors were unsure what to do. Robin's family was into healthy living and tried many different therapies to alleviate her symptoms – from juicing to acupressure to consultations with healers. But nothing worked. “We weren't doing the right things,” says Robin. She soon realized there was a definite link between her illness and the foods she ate; wanting to commit to a healthy holistic life, she left college to study at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Within a few months of starting at the Institute, Robin was giving cookery lessons, which soon evolved into one-on-one sessions and weekend yoga retreats. She was helping others whilst also helping herself. “The career and my health happened simultaneously,” she says, reflecting on how coaching others keeps her committed to a healthy lifestyle. Determined to get better, she started by giving her immune system what it was craving, what it needed to function optimally. She included plenty of antimicrobial and antibacterial foods, such as herbs and spices, in her diet, in combination with other holistic treatments like aromatherapy. Although this helped her to feel better, the real turning point in her health was when she was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease and began a Lyme-specific treatment protocol. Changing her diet and taking herbs from the Cowden protocol got Robin back on track with her health, but she still struggled with fatigue and depression. When she started detoxing her body from heavy metals, her body healed and her health improved dramatically. Where she once found it hard to walk up a flight of stairs, Robin can now work 12 hour days, go out afterwards and still feel full of energy. She talks us through heavy metal chelation, the key issues to watch out for and how to detox safely. Thank You to Our Sponsors! Let's talk about Lyme disease. It's a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected tick and it's pretty prevalent in the US with over 300,000 cases reported each year. But here's the thing, conventional medicine usually only treats the symptoms of Lyme disease with antibiotics, which can have negative side effects and don't address the root cause of the disease. That's where functional medicine comes in. It offers an alternative approach to treating Lyme disease that focuses on supporting the body's natural healing processes. Functional medicine practitioners use a variety of tools and techniques to identify the underlying factors contributing to a patient's Lyme disease, such as genetic predispositions, environmental toxins, and nutritional deficiencies. That's why today I am bringing you some of the most inspiring stories of people who have healed themselves of lyme disease through functional medicine testing, nutrition, detoxification and alternative medicine. This is the Lyme series: This is the series to listen to or send a loved one who is suffering with Lyme and has exhausted all other options. There is hope. You can heal. First up, we roll a clip from episode 199 with Devon Dionne. Devon's wellness journey dates back to her late 20's. Despite being a dancer and appearing slim and healthy, she had a disordered relationship with food, and was pre-diabetic and pre-menopausal: her blood sugar and hormones were completely out of balance. And, she was suffering from Lyme disease. Through a combination of Gyrotonic training, holistic anti-aging strategies and nutrition, Devon completely healed her Lyme disease, balanced her hormones and now feels healthier than ever. Then we're throwing it back to episode 247 with Adrienne Nolan-Smith. Adrienne was diagnosed with Lyme disease at just 11 years old. Back then, doctors didn't know much about Lyme, how to recognize it, much less, how to treat it. Antibiotics weren't working, but Adrienne did not give up. She went on a route to heal herself and between a whole foods diet, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, alternative medicine and more Adrienne healed her body from Lyme disease. Thank You to Our Sponsors!
