Christian Parenti, Professor of Economics at John Jay College, City University of New York and author of Radical Hamilton: Economic Lessons from a Misunderstood Founder (Verso, 2020), returns to the show with a searing analysis of the US political scene and various international theatres. Kicking off with an evaluation of the Trump v2.0 administration, Parenti reviews some of Trump's pre-presidential promises, from the Jeffrey Epstein file dump that was vastly redacted to Trump's enthralment with the Israeli lobby. Delving into the Israeli lobby, deeply entrenched within the US government, Parenti notes that this “lobby” is much more than simply monetary, and suggests that it is much more entrenched within the US political system. Parenti also develops a deeper examination of the war in Ukraine and the “demonology” of Russia within legacy media that has taken up the Cold War era model of anti-Communism by eliding the fact that some of Ukraine's oblasts (Donetsk and Luhansk) are still occupied by Ukrainian Nazis. Observing how the domestic pressure upon Putin is coming from the Communists and the far-right parties, both highly critical of Putn's longstanding abandonment of the Russian people who have been militarily occupied by Ukrainian forces wearing swastikas, Parentis evidences the machinations within the US proxy war against Russia from its provisions of munitions to Ukraine to the Ukrainian government's banning the Russian language in 2019 and Law 5371 which denies unionisation, exempting workers in companies with fewer than 250 employees from the coverage of collective agreements. Parenti also discusses the situation of free speech in the United States that is currently being eroded, specifically regarding any criticism of both the Israeli government and Zionism, as he explores the broader questions of academic freedom and anti-war sentiment within American universities where today the managerial class of university administrators within these institutions outnumbers faculty while itinerant workers with PhDs, the adjunct class, provide approximately 78% of all university teaching.
Read Christian's work here: https://catalyst-journal.com/2024/06/the-cargo-cult-of-woke The Cargo Cult of Woke Introduction: Eight years ago, the term "woke" was popularized in mainstream culture through Childish Gambino's hit song, where it signaled an awareness of social injustices, particularly those perpetuated by systemic racism. “Stay woke” meant staying alert to the potential dangers posed by institutional powers. However, in recent years, "woke" has undergone a significant transformation, morphing from a call to consciousness into a shorthand for a new kind of political correctness—one that gives off a radical sheen, but is without true class politics. In his latest article for *Catalyst Magazine*, "The Cargo Cult of Woke," Christian Parenti examines how this shift in meaning reflects broader cultural and political changes. Parenti argues that what we now call "woke" culture is less about genuine social change and more akin to a "cargo cult"—a symbolic performance of radicalism that ultimately serves to reinforce the status quo rather than challenge it. As Parenti writes, “Woke politics is not the politics of emancipation; it is the politics of submission, disguised as resistance.” Thank you guys again for taking the time to check this out. Anti-communism is an ideology that opposes any effort to make radical social change. Clearly, we need to challenge it. But there's more than one way of doing so. This week we are hoping a government conspiracy hasn't gotten involved in Scully's pregnancy again while we discuss “Per Manum”! We're talking how we can no longer ignore the fact that Scully is pregnant no matter how hard we try, wonder where Mulder kept Scully's ova this entire time (hopefully not his freezer next to the ice cream), note that Scully and Doggett's icy-blue eyes are too scary when combined, how Scully would love to reproduce asexually if she could, and how Doggett needs a big net to catch Mulder. We laugh at Scully's intense commitment to not letting Doggett know a single personal thing about her, how Dr. Parenti's name as an OBGYN is a little on the nose, shake our heads at Scully and Skinner being mean girls to Doggett, and pause the podcast when we see a mouse in our house. Shoot, This moment has been a long time coming for me, and I couldn't be more happy to share this with you all - I'm such a big fan of Sonya Parenti - Miss Love Terra on Instagram, and her hard work to educate people and ask for mindfulness when purchasing cheap clothing, to be wary of its journey and consequences. I think I pride myself in being somewhat of a 'system bucker,' and fashion in general is not my thing (if you see me in pics I'm usually wearing a flannel shirt and jeans), so I enjoy this poking at the fashion worlf maybe a little more than I should...These are Sonya's own words from my guest form:"I'm full of enthusiasm about joining this podcast because, as an experienced professional in the fashion industry, I have a deep knowledge about the industry's complexities and challenges. I believe that transforming the fashion business is crucial in our collective efforts to address global warming. This podcast, hosted by Amy, serves as a powerful platform to have meaningful conversations and inspire change in ourselves and others. By joining forces, we can boost our impact, educating and motivating listeners to make choices that favour ethical and sustainable fashion. My goal is to use this opportunity to contribute to a more sustainable future, sharing insights and strategies that can guide us towards a greener, more responsible fashion industry."And I just LOVED this (my fave question on the guest form) "The message I want listeners to take away is an understanding of the impact of collective actions on the environment. The quote 'RELAX IT'S JUST ONE CHEAP T-SHIRT', SAID 8 BILLION PEOPLE, highlights that while individual choices may seem small, when multiplied across billions of people, they have a huge impact on society and the environment. It's a call to be more conscious of our buying decisions, understanding that our demand for cheap, fast fashion contributes to unsustainable practices, environmental degradation, and poor labor conditions. The key takeaway for listeners is that people have the power to change big issues with our small daily choices."Really, Sonya doesn't need me to add anything to this at all. Rabadam Ching!! The Cannabis series has come to its final chapter, what was meant as a shortstory became a book. And as you can see from the ep-cover I've madly let go of any restraints. We are going after them, the anti-hemp Hitlerists of America! This is a thread description. First we make some final comments about Butler and the Marines. Who paid the veterans, was it a false flag, what was the purpose and why did Smedley become pen pal with Edgar Hoover? We look to Gramsci and his writings on the Gendarme Night-watchman state for answers. Then we establish some ground work with the history of the trust to end all trusts, the Guaranty. Tracing the steps of "the friends of Morgan" and American European banking developments after Napoleon brings about shady marijuana business in Japan and the Black Eagle Banner. We study the futility of various commissions to hold these so called Merchants of Death responsible. And ask if these white old mens sons prosecution work at the OSS might have had something to do with it. Which is hard to answer as they bought up the investigative press. Thus we resort to 30s and 40s analysis by the Comintern and also the Fourth International to create a definition of international fascism and its temporary solutions to overproduction. Piece by piece the interregnum of Natural vs Synthetic agriculture starts to take shape. I put Andrew Mellon on trial and look at the history of his nephew Anslinger as he went from a railroad snitch to a German speaking spy with mysterious ties to the Kaiser Wilhelm. When I finally dived down in to DOS documents and his personal files all became clear. I debunk the debunkers on the swindling of Hearst and cite Parenti. In a roundabout way the story of the MTA of 37 will explain the contemporary debacle in the Ukraine and paper straws as it will open wide the gate for what is to come i.e the GMO research of the Third Reich. This is just some of the nuggets, since never before has so many threads come together in a single episode. Massive thanks to all of you who has been with me on this journey! We've now heard Fustel de Coulanges' understanding of the disturbances in Ancient Rome as revolutions brought on by changes to their religious belief structure. We've considered Machiavelli's fawning historical interpretation of Rome, through Livy, as a people who were more virtuous than any other, and maintained that virtue by subjecting themselves to privation and hardship, and who fell into unrest when they strayed from virtue. And we've now heard Turchin's view, that the unrest of the Roman Republic was created by structural-demographic factors. Now, we hear the people's history of Ancient Rome, from Marxist-Leninist Michael Parenti, whose view I wanted to include because it was so different from any other in how he views Julius Caesar and his role in Roman history: as a reformer and liberator of the people, killed by an entrenched oligarchy who wished for nothing other than to hold on to their wealth. Parenti walks through the history of the Late Republic as a history of increasing excesses of the nobility, which was then challenged by people's tribunes and other attempts at reform. In all cases, the nobility put down the reformer, but Caesar was different because he was only assassinated after he'd managed to succeed, and to redistribute the land and the wealth. The legitimacy of the senate was forever shaken, for Caesar was forever the people's champion, and it was thus that it required a civil war afterwards, and only the man who most successfully presented himself as Caesar's heir was able to win and secure order once again - even if he was not revolutionary that Caesar was. Parenti attacks the view of the 'gentleman historians' of Great Britain, and throughout history, who have viewed Rome as a true republic, with democratic representation. Instead, Parenti makes the case that Rome was ruled by a closed-off patriciate who cared for nothing other than their own wealth, and were even willing to undermine the health and stability of their empire in order to extract more. Caesar was the incarnation of this popular uprising into one man, who was willing to break all of the limitations and decorum the nobility had put into place as a means of ensuring that nothing ever changed. Caesar, rather than a tyrannical villain who was justly killed by Brutus, the "noblest Roman of them all", Parenti portrays Caesar as a tragic hero, who was the only hope for saving the republic and achieving justice.

As Democrats censor Matt Taibbi over the Twitter Files, smear journalists Seymour Hersh and Jeff Gerth for reporting facts they don't like, bury coverage on the Ohio train derailment, and vote for censorship bills in the name of stopping Putin, Parenti recalls a time when it was the Left who were the defenders of the First Amendment. But now, as US leaders move deeper and darker into warmongering and censorship, lying to us at every turn to grow their power and wealth, Parenti instead asks: “When will the Left stand up to the deep state?” The most recent move by the rich and powerful is the bailout of Silicon Valley Bank. “This is triage,” Parenti explains. “This is a tourniquet on a shattered leg, and that has to happen. You cannot let the US financial system collapse and not bring down the rest of the economy.” But while he agrees that the bailout is necessary in the short run, Parenti explains that the collapse is the fault of the capitalist system itself. Hear his analysis on how to fix it. Plus, listen to the full interview on how the FBI intervened in the election, why liberal media is against free speech, and Christian and Aaron's debate on Trump's anti-war message. Every now and then I like to highlight the fact that all this China stuff was forcast way back in 2004 by Michael Parenti, who said that the unipolarist neoconservative ideology that had hijacked US foreign policy envisioned a massive strategic confrontation with Beijing. "The PNAC plan envisions a strategic confrontation with China, and a still greater permanent military presence in every corner of the world," Parenti wrote in his book Superpatriot. "The objective is not just power for its own sake but power to control the world's natural resources and markets, power to privatize and deregulate the economies of every nation in the world, and power to hoist upon the backs of peoples everywhere — including North America — the blessings of an untrammeled global 'free market.' The end goal is to ensure not merely the supremacy of global capitalism as such, but the supremacy of American global capitalism by preventing the emergence of any other potentially competing superpower." Green Dreamer: Sustainability and Regeneration From Ideas to Life
"The idea of the catastrophic convergence essentially looks at how climate change interacts with the pre-existing crises of the legacy of US imperialism and Cold War militarism and neoliberal economic restructuring." In this episode, we welcome Christian Parenti, a Professor of Economics at John Jay College, City University of New York. His undergraduate and graduate teaching, and research, focus on: American economic history, environmental history, and the history of capitalism; climate change and sustainable energy; as well as war, policing, and political violence. Some of the topics we explore in this conversation include what Parenti means by “big storms require big government”, viewing capital in part as social relations, various regional conflicts resulting from the "catastrophic convergence" of climate change, militarism and imperialism, and neoliberal economic restructuring, and more.
