Mariam sits down with Rona Roberts and Barbara Sutherland to discuss their work on Segregated Lexington. Segregated Lexington gathers primary sources and research to show how systemic racism in housing result in unequal life opportunities for Lexington's Black residents versus white residents. They speak on redlining in particular, as well as the effect of realtor steering in relation to home ownership. They talk about how, as white women, they can contribute to repair, and how it's important to understand our past to move forward together in the future. You can visit Segregated Lexington at https://www.segregatedlexington.com This podcast episode is produced in conjunction with the Library's Community Read of The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein (available for checkout) and the UnDesign the Redline exhibit at Central Library, available for viewing until November 17, 2023.
The development of many American cities has been profoundly shaped by “redlining,” a process dating to the 1930s of deliberately dividing urban areas primarily by race. Once a federal policy, redlining produced maps determining which areas of a city were considered “safe” for investment and growth, and which were not, with red lines drawn around those areas deemed to be unsuitable for lending. Redlining was a widely practiced means of ensuring a racially segmented city and placed minorities at a severe disadvantage when trying to obtain banking or insurance services. The effects of the practice led to spiraling urban decay in redlined neighborhoods and are still highly evident in cities like Columbus. Today, the advent of community land trusts, more equitable property tax appraisal practices, and the growth of minority-owned banks are attempting to address the consequences of redlining. Join CMC as we look at the impact of redlining in Columbus and new efforts to heal its deep divisions. The speakers are: Jordan A. Miller, Jr., Chairman & CEO, Adelphi Bank Danielle Sydnor, CEO, Rise Together Innovation Institute Nicole Sutton, Black Heritage Special Collections Librarian, Columbus Metropolitan Library Monica Moran, Deputy Chief of Staff, Franklin County Auditor's Office The host is Tracy Townsend, Anchor, Wake Up CBUS and Face the State, WBNS 10TV This forum was sponsored by COTA, The United Way of Central Ohio, and The Robert Weiler Company, and was supported by the Grange Insurance Audubon Center. The livestream was presented by The Center for Human Kindness at The Columbus Foundation and The Columbus Dispatch. It was recorded before a live audience in Columbus, Ohio on June 7, 2023. You can learn more about redlining in Columbus and how it has impacted Columbus' neighborhoods by visiting the “Undesign the Redline” interactive exhibit, on display in Columbus through December 31, 2023. Chenny Xia is an award-winning entrepreneur, designer, technologist, and CEO of Gotcare. After working within the healthcare industry and at multiple innovation consultancies for over a decade, Chenny realised that there needed to be changes made within the healthcare system to better support its workers. This lead to her co-founding Gotcare, a health tech company that is transforming in-home healthcare across Canada. “In order for us to help unburden people from the weight of the system, we need to change a part of the system and be very strategic about how we're intervening.” Chenny and her team are passionate about creating a more equitable healthcare system, and are dedicated to making that change one step at a time. Gotcare focuses on people first, providing personalised care to people they serve and livable wages to their care providers. Chenny invites us to examine the broader challenge we face as a society: our relationship with care and caregiving. Specifically, as a society, we don't value care work the same way we value revenue-generating work. We explore the shifts in caregiving, the impact of moving from relationship-based care model to a very transactional-based care model and the questions we can ask to bring care and relationship back into focus. In order to achieve her massive goals, Chenny breaks them down into smaller pieces. She speaks about the importance of believing in the core of what you do, how care plays a crucial part in bringing people together for change, turning past trauma into strength, and the importance of authentic leadership. Katie Swenson is a nationally recognized design leader, researcher, writer, and educator, and a Senior Principal at MASS Design Group. Katie and I explore how love can be a power to transform the world. Katie shares how she has learned to think about and practice designing with love, and how designers can use love to help dismantle systemic injustices. “Talking about Love gives us clarity. Love and abuse, or love and racism, or love and discrimination, fundamentally cannot coexist.” - Katie Swenson 2:10 Katie shares her earliest memories of architecture, and her path to becoming an architect, writer and community development expert. 10:30 Katie's shares her process of discovery. She unpacks what she meant when, in Design with Love, she said, “I naively thought that design could be the answer … it was my mistake to think that design by itself could solve a problem, without recognizing that it takes people, joining together and using many tools, including design, to support their community ... I realized this job didn’t require me to be an expert, it required me to be humble and a facilitator”. 12:00 Katie and I discuss parallels to the Hippocratic Oath in architecture, and how we design for the betterment of society. 13:40 Katie shares what shaped her understanding of architecture and design's role in “dismantling systemic injustice rather than contributing to its perpetuation," a passage from her book. She shared lessons from her seminar with April De Simone, Undesign the Redline, and discusses historic injustices in urban and rural areas. 20:00 Katie shares what she thinks we are currently getting right and getting wrong when it comes to designing to dismantle systemic injustice. 24:30 Katie shares what she sees as the role of love in design and why it is so important. Sharing definitions from Bell Hooks All About Love, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s studies on the Beloved Community as an achievable aim. 29:40 Katie shares the example of Franklin Square in Baltimore, Maryland from her book, Design with Love. She shares the stories of the community and what they created. 37:00 Katie shares a very different type of love story and her experience suddenly losing her fiancé in May 2017, and the book that came from that experience, In Bohemia. 40:00 Katie shares her final takeaways around how we design for connection. I hope this episode can inspire and empower you to use Love and Design as forces for positive change. Racially restrictive housing covenants were once common in Baltimore. Eventually, federal rules and regulations locked in even sharper barriers to mortgage loans and housing access. A traveling exhibit titled, “Undesign the Redline,” now at the Central Branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Library, uses maps and stories to show how explicit racism became structural. Facilitator Trent Hall tells us about the exhibit. He hopes visitors leave with a sense of purpose.

This program is in conjunction with Undesign the Redline, exhibited at Central Library November 1, 2019-January 31, 2020.Lawrence Lanahan is the author of The Lines Between Us: Two Families and a Quest to Cross Baltimore’s Racial Divide. In his deeply reported, revelatory story, Lanahan chronicles how the Baltimore region became so highly segregated and why its fault lines persist today. Writing from the Fair Housing Act to the death of Freddie Gray and beyond, Lanahan describes epic efforts to desegregate the Baltimore region and deconcentrate poverty in West Baltimore. As Baltimoreans “cross the lines” in the book, one theme emerges repeatedly: the struggle for self-determination. During the attempted revitalization of 1990s Sandtown, for example, and during the protests following Freddie Gray’s death, neighborhood leaders in West Baltimore worked the lines trying to ensure that their communities remained in control of their own destiny.Lawrence Lanahan will speak with three Baltimoreans whose lives and work have drawn them to this struggle. Sandtown resident Antoine Bennett is the founder of Men of Valuable Action, a leadership development program in West Baltimore. From 2007 to 2012, he was the co-director of New Song Urban Ministries, which worked closely with followers of the Christian Community Development movement who moved into West Baltimore to live in solidarity with the poor.Dayvon Love is the director of public policy for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, where he has worked for nearly a decade years to advance the public policy interests of Black people. As interest in West Baltimore intensified after the death of Freddie Gray, Love and other community leaders created Baltimore United for Change, a hub to connect people to grassroots activists with long histories in Baltimore communities. Love is the author of Worse Than Trump: The American Plantation and co-author with Lawrence Grandpre of The Black Book: Reflections from the Baltimore Grassroots.Audrey McFarlane is the Dean Julius Isaacson Professor of Law and associate dean of faculty research and development at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Redlining is the practice of denying a credit-worthy applicant a loan for housing in a certain neighborhood, even though the applicant may otherwise be eligible for the loan. Redlining on a racial basis has been held by the courts to be an illegal practice. What are the roots of redlining and what effects does it still have today? How can we begin to think about a solution to redlining’s impact? Howard County Library System hosts Undesign the Redline, an interactive exhibit, now through December 31. Christie Lassen, Director of Communications and Partnerships at Howard County Library System, tells us more about the history of redlining.
