Common annoying d&d players and how to deal with them WarmupIntroUpcoming One-shot on the 25th Meat Justin The Player DM: This is me when I play. Deal with this player by sitting them down and saying that they are a really great DM. Stress that you are the DM and that you'd like to challenge them to be an even better player which means good give and take with the other players. The Distracted Distraction I hate these. These are the players that enjoy the game but they also seem to get distracted a lot and either end up sharing videos with other players during the game and or have side conversations. So annoying. I think the best thing to do with these players is to help everyone understand the rules of the table. The Waffler These are the players that say, “I walk through the door,” and then you say, “Right as you do,” they interrupt and say I don't walk through the door. They might be afraid of the consequences and might not feel ready. With this player, I think you have to be firm and say that you said you walked through the door so you do. If they argue then you might need to have another conversation with them outside of normal playing hours. *** All of these can be prevented by establishing the rules of the relationship before you start playing. After playing, I believe that having a conversation with the individual in question can help improve. If it doesn't, steps might have to be taken to make sure the group is having fun. TannerThe Protagonist They think their character is a two-dimensional hero who should always make the main decisions. They are the serious character, while everyone else is a joke who should follow along. To deal with them, try to encourage team play. Encourage them to be the hero who helps them. Also, make a campaign or one-shot with a distinctly silly setting and premise. They need to be taught that it is okay to be silly from time to time. The Tryhard They aren't here to fail rolls, or to lose at all. They are rules lawyers when it benefits them, and rule slobs when it doesn't. They mostly care about succeeding and being awesome and getting their way through any means necessary. Hold them accountable for rules. Also, when they do fail a roll, have the outcome being humorous, or not distinctly negative. Teach them that losing is not a bad thing. Mentioned in this episode: Death Roll Gaming Discount Hey there listener. We all know the intense discomfort one feels when bringing dice to a D&D session only to have them spill out of your bag and fly all over the table. Someday people may be gods – all powerful entities able to control the physics of virtual worlds and the functionalities of NPCs. We might even give NPCs free will, a soul, or immortality – who knows what else? In this episode we have fun thinking about some of the moral choices that would come with being a video game god. --------------------------- Our guest, Dr Richard A. Bartle, is Honorary Professor of Computer Game Design at the University of Essex, UK. He is best known for having co-written in 1978 the first virtual world, MUD, the progenitor of the $30bn Massively-Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game industry. His 1996 Player Types model has seen widespread adoption by MMO developers and the games industry in general. His 2003 book, Designing Virtual Worlds, is the standard text on the subject, and he's an influential writer on all aspects of MMO design and development. In 2010, he was the first recipient of the prestigious Game Developers' Conference Online Game Legend award. --------------------------- JOIN THE ETHICS AND VIDEO GAMES COMMUNITY: - Follow/like/share us on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube - Explore our website and check out our Video Games Ethics Resources Center: https://ethicsandvideogames.com - If you're game to lend us your financial support, we'd love to have it and can definitely use it! Why are video games so important to boys? That's the question a listener sent in response to our recent call for questions. The listener who asked that question just happens to be Jen's brother -- and another one of their brothers happens to be a video game designer, so we got them all together to explore the role of video games in boys' lives. "I remember feeling so ticked when things went wrong when I was playing," says Doc Wondra, a dad of 3 who grew up gaming on the Atari, ColecoVision and Nintendo systems. "I felt cheated by the video game and was just mad at everything in that moment and felt a little bit out of control." He even admits to tossing a controller or two. Of course, now that he's a father, he's annoyed and somewhat baffled by such behavior in his 9-year-old son. "He doesn't just get upset," Doc says. "He gets upset and then shares that 'upsetness' with whoever's nearby." Sound familiar? Greg Wondra (Jen & Doc's brother and a video game designer and dad of 3) says boys' emotional reactions to video games result, in part, from their experience of the flow state. A person is in flow when they are deeply immersed in an activity. "Games are designed to -- and excel at -- keeping you in flow," Greg says. "I think part of the reason boys get very frustrated is that they get busted out of the flow state." Video games also meet a lot of boys' psychological needs: for achievement, creativity, exploration, and socialization. So, if you're worried that your boy is spending too much time gaming, consider his psychological needs. Is your son engaged in other activities that fill some of his needs? Can you give your son more freedom and autonomy in the real world? "There's not many places today where kids feel successful," Doc says. Helping kids find and experience success in other areas of their lives may decrease their reliance on video games. In this episode, Jen, Janet, Doc & Greg discuss: Boys' emotional reactions to video games How boys' developmental level affects their interaction with video games Handling screen time transitions Setting screen time & video game boundaries How to use principles of game design in your parenting Understanding how video game "pain points" are designed to motivate behavior Responding to boys' requests for in-game purchases The link between video gaming & boys' social status Video games as an expression of self Bartle's 4 primary gamer types How video games meet boys' needs Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Video Games & Boys (w special guest Greg Wondra) -- ON BOYS episode Video Game Design - A Career for Boys (also featuring Greg) -- ON BOYS episode Video Game Addiction -- ON BOYS episode Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi -- book mentioned by Greg Bartle's Player Types for Gamification -- International Design Foundation article (discussed at 30:35) The Bartle Test of Gamer Psychology -- online test to determine you (or your son's) gamer "type" Dads Speak on Father's Day -- ON BOYS episode (featuring Doc Wondra) Video game design courses by Greg -- a great opportunity for boys to learn HOW to build games Unreal Engine: Intro to Game Design Unreal Engine: Create an Arcade Classic! Hey Storytellers,In today's episode, we will cover how to scale the challenge rating of your encounters (up or down) depending on the players around your table. Check out our newest book - Human NPC's: 84 Complete NPC's for 5th edition to use in your RPG in minutes: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TCKRZTM/ Check out our first book - 19 RPG Adventures for Game Masters to Run in any TTRPG: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08NQ38H2KLet's face it, if you have a min/max player and they are in their element (like killing one monster) then you need to move the challenge rating of that monster up (maybe 2 or 3 levels).Or you have a player trying a new type of character and they aren't using half of their good abilities yet. Well, then you may need to move the challenge rating down for them.Sometimes, you have both of these players (and others) at your table so what do you do?Listen to find out.

In an ancient tome — the 4th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide — WotC broke down what it considered to be the eight main types of players and gave DMs tips on how to handle them. Understanding who your players are, what they want and why they play can be a big help in DMing them. At the same time, how much should a DM have to adjust their game to fit different kinds of players? In this episode, we revisit the eight player types to talk about whether the advice still applies, how we relate to different types of players (sometimes poorly), and strategies to bring out the best in your party and yourself. 2:00 Understanding different types of players — a 4E lessons today's DMs should learn 4:00 The 8 player types according to 4E: Actor, Explorer, Instigator, Power Gamer, Slayer, Storyteller, Thinker and Watcher 7:00 Casting different player types into the right roles 10:00 How we handle Actors and Explorers 16:00 Engaging Watchers and Storytellers 18:00 Instigators starting trouble we still talk about decades later 20:00 Helping players understand their power to impact an RPG game 22:00 How we engage or don't engage with different player types (Thorin does not put on a show) 23:00 Philosophies in encounter building 25:00 Is the DM more (most?) responsible for everyone's fun? 27:00 Monster wrangling for Slayers and Power Gamers 30:00 To what extent do we influence PC character selection and party roles? 35:00 Pitching you campaign to players (shout out to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtH1SP1grxo (Matt Colville)) 41:00 Is it the DM's job to adjust to the players, or should they adjust to you? 44:00 Specific strategies we use to interact with different player types 52:00 Curse of Strahd: What to do when even the module designer tones down the encounter 57:00 What your encounters teach the players: Should they be brave or scared in your game word? 1:04:00 Fun with secret Lovecraftian monsters 1:06:00 Getting players to accept and embrace the consequences of their actions 1:09:00 How different groups and circumstances impact DM style, players types and game expectations 1:13:00 It's important to also play as a PC 1:16:00 Final thoughts: The DM is a player, too Support this podcast

In this episode we dive into two specific player types from Robin's Law, The Specialist and The Power Gamer. We look at what makes these two types tick and how they meld together well. How do you challenge these players to break some of their habits and try out different character types? How do you manage these players in your game? These are just a couple of questions we look to answer in today's episode.
Welcome back, intrepid explorers! We've come a long way together, and it feels like a good place to begin wrapping up this leg of our journey. We've spent a lot of time over the past year chasing down a myriad of "wonderful human beings", seen new friendships bloom, and learned far more than we ever could have hoped for along the way. A long voyage like this deserves time for respite and reflection, so this will be our final episode for this season of Reality Quest. While we can't make any promises as to what the next creative endeavor will be for us, one thing is certain; this won't be our last foray together. We're hoping you read the title for this episode and anticipate that this will be a more freeform discourse than usual. You'll just have to listen and see where all the Christopher Columbus shade is coming from. We've both had a lot on our minds over the past few weeks after tying up all those loose ends on our deep dive into XR intimacy and porn. By the end of this recording, we'll lay down a veritable smorgasbord of tasty tangents. We wade through the speculative worlds of interactive storytelling and gameplay, the colorful humans in the loop of every virtual creation, and share a healthy dose of reflection on our learnings thus far. We hope you'll enjoy listening to this final dialogue as much as we enjoyed making it. If you manage to finish this episode and are still hungry for more, keep an eye out for bonus content we'll be releasing soon. What is this and why it matters The reasons people come to play - why we should be able to recognize them, and what to do with this info. Your own motivations can change between sessions. Roger Caillois “Man, Play and Games” (1961) Agon, Alea, Mimesis, Ilinx; Paidia vs. Ludus Models of roleplaying game theory The list (18:30) The "what I like" glossary Agon (20:00) - Enjoying winning against another person at the table. Alea (21:50) - The fun of taking a big risk, the tension that comes with it, and the release of the tension. Catharsis (24:40) - The feeling of release following an intense or overwhelming experience. Asabiyyah (27:00) - The enjoyment of working as a team toward a shared goal. Closure (28:55) - The satisfaction of having a story arc come to its conclusion. Expression (30:20) - The enjoyment of being creative at the table. Fiero (33:20) - The feeling of triumph, of facing a challenge and defeating it. Humour (38:05) - The enjoyment of making people laugh. Kairosis (39:15) - The feeling of fulfilment when a character's story arc is complete. Kenosis (43:00) - Satisfaction from being deeply engaged with, and attached to, your character. Kinesis (42:15) - The enjoyment of having physical stuff that you get to touch and move. Ludus (45:55) - The enjoyment of using rules. Naches (49:10) - The enjoyment of seeing someone whom you have taught or were responsible for go on to do well. Paida (51:35) - Freewheeling fun, enjoying the ability to act in unstructured ways, without constraints. Schadenfreude (54:45) - The enjoyment of seeing other people fall. Sociability (56:00) - Enjoying the company of others. Venting (58:45) - Working out your frustrations, channeling your emotions into a harmless activity. Agency (59:55) - The desire to feel like you have control over things, that you are able to affect change. Accumulation (1:00:45) - The desire to catch them all. Think you've found a new motivation? Let's discuss it. How to use this (1:02:05) Should players have a “motivations player sheet” that help us match players together? Probably not. Each of us might have some general likes and dislikes, but they can certainly change between games. When something is troubling you in a game, this information can help you understand why you're not enjoying the game as you should, to know what to focus on, what might need changing. Matching the Players to the Game (episode 29) A good introspection tool, not necessarily a good filtering tool. Avoid trying to use these as a way of defining “what kind of player I am”. This is not what I am, it's the things that I like - in the context of a specific game, with specific people. Summary (1:09:25) Quantic Foundry - The Science of Gamer Motivation
Richard Bartle is best known for having co-written in 1978 the first virtual world, MUD (Multi-user dungeon), and for his 1996 Player Types model (killers, socializers, achievers, and explorers) which has seen widespread adoption by the MMO industry. His 2003 book, Designing Virtual Worlds, is the standard text on the subject, and he is an influential writer on all aspects of MMO design and development. In 2010, he was the first recipient of the prestigious GDCOnline Game Legend award.
The game monopoly in my house not only ended with a fight, but began with one. You see, each of my family members had to get the right metal marker to symbolize them and the adventure they were about to take into corporate financing and scandals. It is a ridiculous way to start a game. Or is it? Thinking back, these symbols might have represented more than we thought. They might have just embodied the type of player we see ourselves as. This idea of what type of player we are is not only found in the starting pieces of monopoly, but in hardcore game design. This episode, Sean and I dig deep into the Bartle Test and the gamer profile. Learn to see how this gamer personality test can help you create balanced teams, more efficient workflows, and an overall better classroom environment. At very least, it is going to give you something to think about. Enjoy!
In this episode, Robert and Erik discuss the contentious subject of metagaming. We define metagaming as "The use of knowledge from outside a game's universe to gain an advantage inside of a game's universe." We talk about what it is, how it can help or hurt a gaming experience, ways of stopping or curbing metagaming, horror stories, and donuts. Here are links to the various people and products we mention. We did a lot of intellectualizing and thus, didn't mention a lot of people or products.
