In the 1970s and 80s, the quiet towns of Weeki Wachee, Florida, and Watsonville, California, became the unlikely settings for a horrifying series of crimes. The story begins with Billy Mansfield, Jr., a convicted serial killer currently serving multiple life sentences, whose crimes shocked the nation. But Billy wasn't alone; his father, William Mansfield Sr., a convicted child molester, and brother, Gary Mansfield, were also deeply entangled in the family's dark history. The crimes discussed in this episode raise chilling questions about the full extent of their horrific actions as we explore the twisted family dynamics and shocking discoveries. This episode concludes with an exclusive interview with Warren Skeels, the director of the upcoming film The Man In The White Van, based upon Mansfield, Jr's crimes and premiering December 13th, 2024.If you are interested in bonus content for our show or in getting some Coffee and Cases swag, please consider joining Patreon. Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this podcast episode, we talk about the new 2025 Indian Scout lineup. It has been revamped for 2025. For some background information, the Indian Scout is a motorcycle built by the Indian Motorcycle Company from 1920 to 1949. It rivaled the Chief as Indian's most important model. The 101 Scout, made from 1928 to 1931, has been called the best motorcycle Indian ever made. A second line of Scouts, with heavier frames, was introduced in 1932 alongside the Standard Scout, which replaced the 101 Scout and shared its frame with the Chief and the Four. The small-displacement Scout and the Sport Scout, introduced in 1934, were continued until the end of civilian production in 1942. We and other Allied forces used military versions of both models during World War II. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE The 2025 Indian Scout is built around an all-new 1250cc SpeedPlus engine, which gets its name from the PowerPlus engine and what's shared between the two units. The new engine produces a claimed 105 horsepower and 82 lb-ft of torque, except on 101 models, where an extra six horsepower is available through different tuning. The torque curve is long and flat, starting around 3000 rpm and continuing past peak horsepower at 7250, tapering off as it reaches the rev limiter at 8500 rpm. Over previous models, average fuel mileage is improved for an additional claimed 20 miles per tank, largely thanks to a one-tooth larger drive sprocket. In the city of Weeki Wachee, Florida, live mermaids perform daily shows in an underwater theater. The city was founded in 1947 as a roadside attraction and has been home to mermaids ever since. In addition to the daily shows, the city also offers mermaid classes for those interested in learning the craft. Weeki Wachee was a city located in Hernando County, Florida, with a total population of just 12 people. While the city may be no more, the Weeki Wachee Preserve and the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, are still running strong. Drawing in people from all over the United States. As Weeki Wachee Springs is one of those old Florida tourist attractions, that many visited from the 1940s through the 1960s. Because it includes water rides, animal shows, manatee watching, and of course, their most famous attraction, the one that literally built the small city, the Mermaids of Weeki Wachee.[FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/SouthernOddPodINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SouthernOddPodJARED'S TWITTER: www.twitter.com/jared_ordisJARED'S INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/jared.ordisORDIS STUDIOS PODCAST NETWORK & WEBSITE: www.ordisstudios.com[ADDITONAL INFORMATION]Questions or Business Inquiry, Email Us @ ordisstudios@gmail.comResearched was used for this episode of Southern Oddities, and we couldn't have made it possible without the journalism and dedication from these awesome sources of information: Roadside America [Tip 307] Roadside America [Story 2068] Visit Florida [Weeki Wachee Mermaid Show] Roadtrippers [Weeki Wachee Springs Mermaids] Florida Backroads Travel [Weeki Wachee Springs] Florida State Parks [Weeki Wachee] Wikipedia [Weeki Wachee, FL]"Southern Oddities" is created & produced by Jared Ordis, an Ordis Studios production. Today we are going to give you a deep dive into not only Billy Mansfield Jr, a man convicted of murdering and assaulting at least five women in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but we’ll also look into the violent and criminal pasts of his father and brother. These crimes were committed almost 50 years ago, but a discovery on the Mansfield property in Weeki Wachee, Florida, has led to new questions about the scope of Billy’s murders and who was really involved. Students at Florida State University who made a mockery of social distancing when they return for the fall semester, are now finding out their football coach has COVID-19. Party on, Seminoles … Also, on today’s Sunrise: — The state health department reports 2,500 new cases of coronavirus … that’s a total of almost 684,000 infections in Florida since the start of the pandemic. The state also reported nine more fatalities from COVID –… raising the death toll to 13,459. The Governor rarely mentions COVID casualties; he’d rather talk about non-human metrics like positivity rates or emergency department admissions. We are back with Season 2! You asked for more mermaid stories and mermaid legends, so that is what we are bringing to you! Mermaid historians, mermaid legends, mermaid books and mermaid authors! Of course, we will also be introducing you to real mermaids from time to time, but we’ll be focusing most on mermaid stories. In this episode, we come full circle and also go back to the beginning. You may remember that in the first two episodes of Season 1, host Laura von Holt told you all about her time at mermaid camp at the world famous Weeki Wachee Springs! If you haven’t listened to those episodes yet, you should! While Laura was at mermaid camp last year, she became very enamored of Vicki Smith, a legendary siren who still performs at Weeki Wachee at age 78. When she returned to mermaid camp in 2018, she was lucky enough to be paired with Vicki, as well as her mermaid friend, Alison (who you met in S1 E1). In 2017, Vicki celebrated her 60th anniversary of swimming at Weeki Wachee. Vicki performed as a Weeki Wachee mermaid from 1957-1961, beginning just days after her high school graduation. Now, she is part of the elite group of “Legendary Sirens” women in their 50s, 60s and 70s who perform monthly at Weeki Wachee Springs. Vicki invited Laura and Alison back to her home to watch the sunset and drink wine on her deck overlooking the crystal clear Weeki Wachee River. Vicki showed them her personal scrapbook and took them through her many memories of performing at Weeki Wachee in the 1950s and 60s. For over 70 years, Weeki Wachee mermaids have trained each other in underwater ballet using underwater air hoses so they can perform dozens of feet underwater. It’s a unique tradition handed down from woman to woman, and a trained eye can see the differences from each teacher & when they began their instruction. Vicki allowed Laura to record her while we looked through the scrapbook, drank wine, and listened to the radio. She talked about about the changes she’s seen in the park, the show, and what it’s like to perform at age 17 and age 78. It’s a long interview, kind of like an oral history, but well worth your time. Some of the mermaids that Vicki swam with are still with us, and some are now gone. But if you settle in with this episode, you’ll feel like you are right there, suspended in time, swimming right along with the Legendary Sirens of Weeki Wachee. In its 70-year history, Weeki Wachee Springs has featured over 1,000 mermaid performers. Host Laura von Holt, fresh from Sirens of the Deep mermaid camp, talks mermaid-to-mermaid with real Weeki Wachee mermaids about the long tradition of their underwater performances, what it’s like to train to breathe off an air hose, the celebrities they’ve swum with, like Elvis Presley and Jimmy Buffett, and the typical workday in the life of a mermaid. Yes, mermaid camp is a thing! Lured by the promise of learning “real mermaid responsibilities,” our host Laura von Holt attended Sirens of the Deep Mermaid Camp at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park in Florida, and she’s here to tell you the whole story! Laura learned how to wear a mermaid tail, how to swim and dance like a real Weeki Wachee mermaid, and she discovered some amazing mermaid secrets from her teachers, the Legendary Sirens of Weeki Wachee. Laura also interviewed her fellow mermaid campers, and got the inside scoop on what it’s like to be life-long mermaid from Mermaid Becky and Mermaid Vicky, who’s still performing at age 77! As if that wasn’t exciting enough, a photographer from Vogue Magazine was following them around the whole time! We reached our goal on day 1, but we welcome your continued contributions to keep the show going strong! The Drunken Odyssey Deeply Recommends When I complained that Britney Spears was in Esquire back in the early paleolithic days of 2004, I confess I didn't dwell sufficiently on what Chuck Klosteman's article said about her cognitive dissonance, although his words were competing with Britney Spears's anatomy at the time. On May 14th, 1988, Atlantic Records held a 40th Anniversary Concert during which, in my infallible opinion, and it pained me to say this, Debbie Gibson outplayed Led Zeppelin. Want to disagree? Watch the footage: Debbie Gibson Led Zeppelin For the record, Jason Bonham was drumming, although I don't this Hindenburg of a performance can be blamed on him. According to a Times profile, Alice Munro is retiring. According to The Guardian, Neil Gaiman is writing a new Sandman series.

This is a special American Road TripTalk due to both the subject and the guest. Weeki Wachee Springs, is a natural wonder in northwest Florida where “mermaids” have performed under water for millions of visitors since it opened shortly after WWII. Right now the very existence of this extraordinary attraction is in danger. Like every state in the union, Florida is trying to save money by cutting costs and state services. Weeki Wachee became a Florida state park in 2008 and has been extremely successful since then. However the state of Florida is threatening to privatize services at the park which would threaten the quality of services currently being offered. Our guest, Barbara Wynns, became a mermaid at the historic park many years ago but still performs regularly as one of the “retired” mermaids. She is passionate about saving Weeki Watchee from the changes that the state of Florida wants to make.

I'm back! (Again...) Join the Bleepin' Wife and I as we take in one of Florida's Historical Attractiona, Weeki Wachee Springs. Lately the park's fate has been up in the air, so now is the time to take it all in. Both the Bleepin' Wife and I highly recommend taking the drive from Central Florida over to the Coast to enjoy the wonderful experience that they offer. This episode is a little bit different from the norm, because it involves a combination of storytelling and attraction audio, yet not the audio that you'd expect to hear... Have fun! Edit - I slipped and said that the News reported that Florida was in exploratory talks about making Weeki Wachee a National Park when I meant to say State Park.
