Cheri Christensen was born in Enumclaw Washington, a small rural town of horse, dairy and cattle ranches at the foot of Mt. Rainier. Cheri's grandfather was a cattle rancher there and he was a big influence on her choice of subject matter today.   Cheri studied oil painting and drawing intensely for three years with Ron Lukas, a protege of Sergei Bongart, who taught in the tradition of the Russian Impressionists. Cheri concentrates on seeing and conveying the effects of color and light on form. The first painting she submitted to a competition was included in a prestigious exhibition at the Charles Emma Frye Art Museum in Seattle, Washington, and the first painting to include farm animals received the Beatrice Jackson Memorial award for Best Traditional Landscape in the Allied Artists of America 1995 show.  Currently, Cheri is represented at several galleries, McLarry Fine Art in Santa Fe N.M., InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg Texas, Eisenhauer Gallery on Martha's Vineyard, and Roby King Gallery on Bainbridge Island, WA. Cheri has been featured in several magazines such as American Art Collector, Western Art Collector, and Southwest Art Magazine. She currently has 5 videos available through Liliedahl Video Productions, "Straight Ahead," "Highlight," "Keeping an Eye Out," " Bushwork & Backlight" and her new video "The Color of White" where she demonstrates both her brush and palette knife techniques. She is also featured in the books, "Art Journey, New Mexico," and "Finding your Visual Voice. A Painter's Guide to Developing an Artistic Style." She currently resides in Texas.  " I am inspired by the simple everyday interaction of the animals in their environment: the way the light dances across the form, the harmony of color relationships and the shapes of light and shadow. I prefer early-morning light or late afternoon settings, with extreme back-lighting. My focus is on the farm animals, their character and the use of color, light and texture to convey a mood. On this week's show we give a brief lesson on American Antitrust law and how it applies to Hollywood. We also review the SofaBaton X1S Universal Remote. Is it a Harmony Replacement? We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: New YouTube TV Customers Can Get Can Get NFL Sunday Ticket For Just $179 a Year Disney Bundle Cuts Hulu Churn Nearly in Half (Charts of the Day) | Next TV Brad Pitt's Formula 1 Film Gets June 2025 Release Date From Apple Sony Pictures Buys Alamo Drafthouse Other: Only 100 cinemas can show 'Inside Out 2' as Pixar intended The HDR Superchannel Stop the FOMO SofaBaton X1S Review We have been searching for a Harmony Replacement since they discontinued what we felt was the best “consumer grade” remote on the market. We reviewed the SofaBaton X1 last november and felt it came close to being the Harmony Replacement. It worked but it still had some rough edges. Well, SofaBaton is back with the X1S ($189.99).  The X1S has enhanced performance and compatibility compared to the X1. The X1S boasts features like “Raise to Wake” and supports a vast array of devices, over 500,000 across IR, Bluetooth, and WiFi  thanks to its use of the “cloud code library”.  There is even a Smart SofaBaton App, that allows you to manage devices, personalize buttons and activities.  The X1S makes use of a hub that offers 360 degree control, 40 foot infrared range, and has support for IR blasters for devices in different rooms or in cabinets.  There is also support for hands free control with Alexa and Google Assistant, personalized macro buttons, and API integration allows for third parties to further expand on the X1S' capabilities. The X1S also has backlit buttons, and a 45 day battery. The full feature list is below: Features: SofaBaton X1S Universal Remote:  Enhanced performance and compatibility over X1  Supports 500,000+ devices (IR, Bluetooth, WiFi)  Includes powerful cloud code library Smart SofaBaton App:   Device management and customization   Favorite channel organization   Remote tracking and phone backup control Effortless OneClick Activities:   Initiates predefined device settings with one command   Example: "Music Time" activity for automated device control Powerful Hub:   360degree control   40foot infrared range   2 IR blasters for signal coverage   Can be hidden in cabinet Voice Control with Alexa and Google Assistant Personalized Macro Buttons:   Customizable key functions   Create sequences for complex operations API Integration:   Integration with other applications   Personalized control through simple configurations Highlight Design:   Raise To Wake function   Backlight buttons   Rechargeable battery lasting up to 45 days   Thumb scroll wheel for quick device switching Setup: The setup process started out intuitive, but it required additional effort and time to fine tune the configuration. The Harmony had some configuration issues too but the X1S was a little more cumbersome. Once you grasp the app's workflow you can work through the issues. The app provides a step by step guide to help you quickly connect your devices. Like other remotes you can personalize buttons and set up macros for specific functions allowing you to customize the remote to suit your preferences. It took me 90 minutes to get my system (AppleTV, Oppo UHD Player, SONY TV, and Yamaha Receiver) up and running. Like the Harmony, once you have added your devices you then create activities. Then you test and then you tweak and you finally get it dialed in. One oddity was how the remote dealt with power. It has a concept of the steady state of the power setting for each device, which I thought was odd. So our tip is just say that your devices are always powered off. Then go into the startup settings and add the power on command for your devices. Do the opposite for the shutdown settings. This caused me at least 30 minutes of grief in setting it up. But once the setup was done the remote worked flawlessly!  Performance: The SofaBaton X1S remote's build quality is top notch! And battery life is as advertised. The display is simple, clean and nothing fancy. I had to add delays between some commands for some activities to respond properly. The scroll wheel on the X1S is tighter and smoother than the X1, providing a more precise user experience. The inclusion of a USB C charging port allows usage while charging which is a nice added touch. Syncing commands from the phone to the remote takes a long  time which can be annoying while making tweaks to dial in the exact commands you want. But once it's set up you no longer have to worry about this.  Also, the battery charging level is only visible from the main screen. It would be nice if you could see it from any screen.  We have used the remote for over a week and the family approves. No missed commands, easy to use. I still like my Harmony a little better but I am confident that the Sofabaton will improve with better configuration software and become the replacement to the Harmony we have all been wanting! Pros: Pleasing design and buttons with solid tactile response. Backlit buttons are great for dark rooms. The IR blaster sends signals omnidirectional. Handy "find the remote" button. Cons: The setup process proved challenging, particularly concerning the power settings. An unusual default configuration involved separate power on and power off buttons for each device, such as my receiver and TV.  No Direct Number input No Dock for charging. Plugging in a cable is cumbersome Sync times are too slow The remote does not emit IR commands.

Have you ever been in a photoshoot and felt something was off, but you couldn't quite figure it out? Most of the time, it's because of one big reason – light. But instead of tackling light, our tendency is usually to start fussing with props and backdrops and composition, thinking that is the problem when actually sometimes all it needs is a tiny tweak in the light. But here's the deal – to tweak the light, we've got to know what to tweak. We've got to understand light. In this week's podcast, I'm sharing all about one of the most dynamic lighting direction for food photography – Side Backlight.Yep, this kid of lighting is my absolute personal favourite and I share all the reasons why it is so powerful. In this episode I also talk about where this light might not be the best fit because that is part of understanding light. Not just where it works but also where it doesn't so that not only can we create this awesome light, but also know what to do if we get stuck. The lighting techniques for food photography are not the same as other forms of photography. A solid grasp of lighting in food photography not only streamlines our photoshoot workflow but also propels our skills forward. Understanding various lighting techniques allows us to harness the unique strengths of each type of light, tailoring them to create the mood we want and make the food hero look like a million bucks.Infact, it is the #1 skill every food photographer needs - a good grip on lighting techniques & the ability to troubleshoot when needed.  I personally think that side back light is a superhero, it is mine atleast & once you begin to use it, I'm certain this lighting style will totally wow you.Don't be at the mercy of available light. Create light the way you want and take your photography to the next-level. Read more at https://myfoodlens.com Follow Dyutima on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dyutima_myfoodlens/Show notes available https://myfoodlens.com/86-side-back-light-when-to-use-avoid-it-in-food-photography/Download free resourcesThe 5 steps to visual storytelling https://myfoodlens.ck.page/b0ea86cef6The 10-step photoshoot https://myfoodlens.com/the-10-step-photoshoot-guide/Write that pitch https://myfoodlens.ck.page/writethatpitch

WOA has two celebrations to cover in this week's episode, with Waves' very own Matt "The Man" Moore celebrating his 34th birthday and Backlight Productions celebrating 10 years! The Executive Director of Backlight Productions, Melissa Smith, joins us and shares how Backlight has been offering opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to engage with the performing arts for 10 years now. This year they're putting on their biggest production yet, "Cinderella", with over 100 individuals performing and only half the time they usually have to put the show together. Matt talks about his own work on Cinderella as a dancer with 5 dance numbers throughout the play. Melissa and Matt have worked together on various shows for a while now and swap stories with WOA on their time together. Here to share her own memories with Matt, Waves Early Learning Program Director Gina Wilson joins the episode and tells us about her favorite birthday memory with Matt. Gina's son Eric Wilson has also been a part of Backlight Productions and speaks on how Backlight brought out an entirely new side of Eric after he joined the production company. Enjoy listening to Matt, Melissa, and Gina chat about their favorite memories together and how Backlight Productions has empowered the community of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cinderella's first performance will be held on Oct. 22. Most K-12 schools offer support staff and specialized education classes for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. But when those kids graduate, what's next? Often, it falls on the parents to figure it out. If they don't have the resources to hire a caretaker, or time to provide full-time care themselves, navigating this transition into adulthood can be really challenging. And that's just care. What about finding opportunities for joy? Today, we'll hear from a few young adults living with disabilities and parents in Middle Tennessee. And a policy liaison from Tennessee Disability Coalition will round up some of the resources that are available in our region. Plus, we'll visit a rehearsal for Backlight Productions' upcoming rendition of "Beauty and the Beast," featuring nearly 50 actors with disabilities. The performance runs May 27 and 28 at the Nashville Children's Theater. Guests: Clay Booker, Franklin High student in the Transition program, has autism and ADHD Barry Booker, father of two sons with autism Dave Krikac, father, founder of Our Thrift Store, regional VP of Adult Services at Health Connect America Melissa Smith, executive director, Backlight Productions Fernanda Aguilar, young adult with special abilities, Backlight student, employee at Full Circle at Brentwood's YMCA Jeff Strand, coordinator of government and external affairs at Tennessee Disability Coalition Produced by Andrea Tudhope.

#53 - Backlight: When to use & avoid it in food photography

Ever been stuck during a photoshoot? You know something is not working, but can't put your finger on it. Well, more than 90% of the time, it is the same darn reason that gets us stuck. It is the troublemaker but also the knight in shining armor.Which means, it is the devil but can be the hero - depending on how we deal with it.You know what I'm talking about  - That one reason that gets us stuck, is light.90% of the time we get stuck because the light does not work as magically as we want it to. And instead of focussing on it, we start replacing the props, backdrops, the composition and totally underestimate that all it might actually need is just a slight tweaking of the light. But to tweak the light, we need to have an understanding of light.Lighting in food photography is different from portrait, product, landscape and even architectural photography. That's why, in this week's episode I'm sharing with you one of the most powerful lighting techniques in food photography - Backlight.  Unlike other lighting directions, backlight is a tad bit tricky. I call it Mr. Hyde. …. Because it can be evil and vicious but it can also skyrocket our photo from good to Wow… as long as we can use it to our advantage. In this episode I'm sharing how to read backlight, when to use and when to avoid it ….so that you can not only create backlight but also quickly identify the problem if you get stuck.  Having a grip on lighting in food photography not only helps to save time during a photoshoot but also propels our skills forward. Knowing different lighting techniques enables us to tap into the power of each light type and use it in a way that works perfectly for the mood and food we are working with.Back light is one of the most powerful lights to work with but it needs to be understood, adjusted and sometimes even tamed. It is aptly fitted for the title of “troublemaker” but also “knight in shining armor” – depending on how well we can work with it.Don't be at the mercy of the light available to you. Work with backlight like a Pro and take your photography to the next level. Read more at https://myfoodlens.com Follow Dyutima on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dyutima_myfoodlens/Show notes available at https://myfoodlens.com/53-backlight-when-to-use-avoid-it-in-food-photography/

Another day, another part we can't get! This week we're on the hunt for a replacement for the FAN5333 (https://www.digikey.com/short/bc3jrj8w), a constant-current, 24V boost converter that we use for our TFT displays with big back lights like the 4.3" touchscreen (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1591). These displays often have 6 or 7 white LEDs in series, and sometimes multiple strands of them! That means boosting 3.3V or 5V up to 22VDC with 50 to 100mA of current. That's a lot of power! Let's find a good alternative at Digi-Key so we can keep making display breakouts that folks love - ideally one that is drop-in compatible with the FAN5333 or at least one with minimal design changes required.
