Brian worries to Stella about access into the field for Thursday's ploughing match at Home Farm. The Bull will be handling the catering. Brian's entered Stella for the ‘Ladies Cup', a term she objects to, competing against Ruth. But Stella isn't keen on promoting such an outdated farming practice. Later at Brookfield, Stella catches up with Ruth and repeats her stance on ploughing and use of the word ‘Ladies'. Ruth's more sanguine about it and shows Stella an article online about pioneering ploughwomen in the fifties. Stella thinks the pictures look amazing and loves Ruth's idea of dressing up in vintage clothing on the day of the match. Alice appears unexpectedly at Little Grange to get Emma to sign a permission form for Keira's riding. Flustered Emma does so, then confesses how angry and disappointed she is with George, before breaking down. Sympathetic Alice – drawing on techniques that helped her through addiction - suggests a coping mechanism. Then she tells Emma about Chris writing to her when she was in Rehab, with news about Martha and local gossip. Perhaps Emma could write to George about Apple Day? Alice has already promised Keira that she's going. After clearing access into the field Brian has lunch with Alice at The Bull. She tells him about seeing Emma, though Brian can't understand why she bothered. But for Alice, reaching out to the Grundys feels like part of her recovery. Besides, she knows what it's like being separated from your child and feeling it's your fault. Brian has to admit, Alice is a better woman than he is.

At Grange Farm, Ed and Will discuss plans for Apple Day. Various attractions and stalls are allocated to different family members, but when Emma comes in she's less than enthusiastic – will anyone even turn up? But later she tells Clarrie she'll help out, for Poppy's sake. Clarrie reckons they've still got friends in the village who'll come – and believes George would be for it too. With Fallon leaving they've had a crisis meeting at Bridge Farm. Helen and Pat remain relatively calm, but Natasha catastrophises. She can't believe Fallon's making the right choice, abandoning them for a “nowhere place” like the EV Charging Station. Natasha admits to feeling hurt by Fallon's decision. Helen sympathises with her, but apart from looking for a new manager doesn't think there's much they can do. Finding a replacement will be hard, Natasha reckons. Worse, Fallon will be in direct competition with them. Helen thinks the Bridge Farm brand will see them through, but Natasha's not giving up, hoping she can persuade Fallon to change her mind.Henry is helping Pat in the goat pen and confesses he misses George. Henry still thinks George is alright, despite what he's done. Pat reassures him, it's not bad to think that - and she doesn't regret writing a reference for George. Pat feels she had to put her conscience first, despite the ructions it's caused in the family. Henry agrees with her. Pat then talks about putting a meat buck in with the nannies to produce quality goats for meat production. Henry thinks it's a fantastic idea and definitely wants to help.

Chelsea and Fallon are working at The Tearoom, with Adam and Natasha lending a hand. To Chelsea's annoyance Natasha then asks her to train Adam to use the coffee machine. Later, Chelsea helps Adam source bunting and decorations for the school Halloween disco he's helping Ian organise. At the end of the day Chelsea admits how awkward she found it working with Adam. He sensed it, but reckons his shifts in the Tearoom shouldn't happen too often in future.Kirsty comes across a pensive Clarrie at Bridge Farm and confides how strapped for cash Rewilding Ambridge is, especially after losing a wealthy potential sponsor last week. Clarrie admits how much she's missing George – and how awkward it is talking to Fallon. Kirsty takes Clarrie's hand and promises to support her as they enter The Tearoom. Kirsty accepts Adam's offer of a chai latte he's been working on, while Clarrie tentatively exchanges pleasantries and then invites Fallon and Harrison to the Apple Day event next week. Fallon says she's busy then and Clarrie leaves. However, Fallon follows Clarrie out to say she appreciates the invitation and Clarrie's kind words, but she really would find going to Apple Day too much right now.Adam tells Chelsea he still can't forgive the Grundys for what George did and its repercussions, but Chelsea points out how wretched George felt about it too. Then Fallon surprises them both with the news that she's been selected to run one of the units at the EV Station, before heading off to hand in her notice to Natasha.

Helen's at Bridge Farm, dropping Jack off for Pat to take to school, when Neil arrives. He's taking a week off work at Berrow, but can't bear the idea of doing nothing, so offers to help out at Bridge Farm instead. Grateful Helen sends him off on a task just as Kirsty turns up. While Helen toasts bagels Kirsty bemoans how difficult it is trying to get a mortgage for Willow Farm. Helen then suggests Kirsty could either sell the Beechwood house or move in with Helen and the boys, at least temporarily, but Kirsty can't imagine ever living there again.Clarrie spots Neil working and threatens to tell Susan about his turn yesterday, if he doesn't make an appointment with the GP. Then Pat talks to Clarrie about the possibility of keeping goats for meat, in connection with a school project Henry's doing, before moving onto Apple Day. Overriding Clarrie's doubts about the Grundys holding such a public event Pat thinks it could be just what the family needs to bring them together. If Pat can get away she'd love to bring Jack, Henry, Nova and Seren along. Then Clarrie confides her concerns about Neil. Later, Pat encourages Neil to take a break and talks to Helen about the dangers, particularly for men, of keeping stressful feelings bottled up inside. When Helen seeks him out Neil confides how hard it's been for the family, coping with the fallout from George's actions and imprisonment. Helen mentions the benefits of counselling, only for Neil to gently but firmly resist the idea, before heading off.

Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets which are used to make many everyday items. However, tonnes of them end up being washed up on our beaches posing a threat to wildlife. Rachel finds out about the Great Nurdle Hunt, a campaign to highlight the issues microplastics cause. Mark visits Pitmedden Garden in Aberdeenshire and has a nosey around their orchards as they gear up to celebrate Apple Day this weekend. Avian Flu has caused the deaths of thousands of seabirds along our coastline. Last summer there was significant concern over the future of the world's largest colony of northern gannets on the Bass Rock. Rachel visits the Scottish Seabird Centre which looks out at the Bass Rock, to find out what the picture is now. Rachel meets two sisters involved in a project which finally hopes to shed new light on Equine grass sickness and what causes it. To tie in with World Rivers Day, The Rivers Trust is asking the public to record observations of rivers in the first Big River Watch. We chat live to James Hunt from the Tweed Foundation to hear how people can get involved and what information they are hoping to gather. As part of the Tall Ships Races earlier this summer, Maud Start spoke to the Peterson family onboard the Christiania, their retired rescue ship. We hear an excerpt from the Scotland Outdoors podcast where they tell her the history of the ship. Wind is not usually a good thing for outdoor activities however, land yachting is definitely the exception to that rule. Mark tries his hand at the speedy beach activity in St Andrews. Earlier this month the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches returned after an absence of three years. The event traces its roots to the historic riding of the boundaries of the city, which dates back to 1579. Stuart McFarlane went along to meet some of those taking part and capture some of the atmosphere. And Rachel is in Strathkinness in Fife visiting an iconic red phone box that has been given a new lease of life.

Hey there, my wise friends and welcome to Episode 39 of The Collective Wisdom Podcast. This week we're celebrating two very important national days. The first was yesterday, Monday the 18th of October, which is International Menopause Day. And I just like to say a huge thanks once again to Dr. Rebecca Lewis, who so kindly joined me back in Episode 35 and shared her immense wisdom about how to get informed and how to get access to the help you need to have a healthy menopause, including the balance app that was launched by the Newsome clinic, which really gives women the chance to track their symptoms and get the help they need. And this week also marks national Apple Day, Thursday the 21st of October is a very important day for celebrating orchards across the UK and to raise awareness of the environmental impact just to remind people of the importance of orchard fields, and nature to humanity in general. So to celebrate that I have two superstar guests with me this week, Vanessa Rigg, and Keyna Doran, who have together worked tirelessly to save and protect the over 100 year old World's End orchard in Chipping Camden. So find out all about the two of them, their story about orchards and why they matter so much.   Friends of Wolds End Orchard Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/SaveWoldsEnd/   Campden Edge Youth Arts Charity - https://www.facebook.com/SaveWoldsEnd/     Song My Best Friend's Girl by The Cars - https://open.spotify.com/track/1SRkKyJ2JjMZgyDWC30zKv?si=2cd8adfbbf2d49b2   Music Credo Mass in C Minor by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - https://open.spotify.com/track/0hneOtkiKbXm4oreUfWzaI?si=43ec56b767894b84   Wisdom: Get informed and be prepared before you go into battle.

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider upgrades of and migrations between Operating Systems. We may need to consider that the concept of an Operating System has changed and continues to evolve as computer technology matures. In the news, Apple Day told us about new MacBook Pros and AirPods (plus how people apparently aren't actually using Siri), and a kid accidentally shot himself immediately after assembling a 3D printed gun.

A little girl longs for romantic love but goes after it in quite the wrong way. The British celebrate Royal Oak Day on May 29 in honor of King Charles II’s birthday. Ten-year-old Poppy Marigold wears an oak apple round her neck because if a student doesn’t wear a costume they are to be pinched—in the bum. Poppy sits at lunch with Alastair Glover, Duncan MacGregor, and Fergus Laird. None of the boys say anything to her. She wants to pinch them in the bum for their bad attitudes. Inspired by the kiss in Sleeping Beauty, she imagines being kissed by her own prince. For weeks, Poppy was sure she was in love with each of the three adorable boys, and now was the time to finally be kissed. She decides that the large Oak Tree outside the School is about to help her get that first kiss. As Poppy pinches the boys’ bums, their teacher announces that the Heart of Oak Friendly Society Parade starts at three o’clock. This year Poppy plans to sneak up the Oak Tree and drop apples on Alastair, Duncan, and Fergus. More determined than ever, she remembers how wonderful love is supposed to be, according to Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince. So, when no one is looking, she stuffs her dress pockets and backpack with apples. Poppy thinks if she hits the boys in the head, they’ll pass out, and she can kiss them before they wake up. If one of them wakes when she’s kissing him, it will be true love, and everyone will know it. When Poppy finishes her Maypole, she slips out to the Oak Tree and positions herself on a sturdy tree branch where she has good aim at any of the boys. Her classmates walk out with their Maypoles, oak boughs, and flowers. They look so festive Poppy almost forgets her plan to drop the apples, but when she sees Alastair, she drops the first apple and hits his shoulder. She drops the second apple on Duncan. It hits him in the head, but it isn’t strong enough to knock him out. When she sees Fergus, she throws the apple so hard that it smacks him to the ground. She declares it’s true love. Poppy climbs down and the rest of the apples fall on everyone. As her teacher scolds her, she runs to Fergus, grabs him and kisses him. A few moments later, Fergus opens his eyes, looking so shocked and confused that he can hardly breathe. Yelling, Fergus gets up off the sidewalk and runs down the parade route as fast as he can. Poppy calls after him and runs to try to catch him, throwing apples from the sidewalk at his head, with good aim. After a few minutes, Fergus gives up, and makes Oak Apple Day history when he kisses Poppy.

This week for In Focus, Breifne headed north to the village of Rossinver to have a look at what The Organic Centre has to offer to Leitrim and the surrounding area. He sat down with General Manager Jan Melia and Marketing Officer Dervilla Keegan to find out more about the events, courses and attractions in the 19 acre site built between limestone hills and Lough Melvin. The Centre, which was the brainchild of Ron Alston, was developed to encourage organic production, the sustainable and ecological use of land, and to promote education and inclusion. They started with 6 weekend courses in 1995 and have worked hard to ensure that we stay up to date and offer people high quality information and training growing their offering to over 80 courses from single day to year long opportunities. We hear more about their individual days celebrating the seasonal produce that are grown on the site including Apple Day, Potato Day and specifically their upcoming Samhain at the Organic Centre event on 28th October from 12 noon to 4pm.

Saturday is Apple Day in Portobello’s Community Orchard. It’s one of only two special events held there each year, the other being the wassailing of the tress in January – we featured this last year. Apple Day is a relatively modern ‘tradition’ having started back in 1990 and can be celebrated throughout October. The objective was to remind people that there are many more apple varieties than they realise – and to point out that many of these are in danger of being lost. Porty Podcast Producer David Calder went to the orchard to find out more:

Groups do sometimes fall into financial difficulties. How do sections continue to deliver a good program while the group struggles? ----more----Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher | AnchorDownload episode: MP3 Podcast Topics Ken and Colin respond to a message from a listener, Barbara, whose Group is in a bit of a financial pickle: I'm a returning Scouter ( and now a Beaver contact scouter), and determined to not be a curmudgeon. 9 out of 10 youth in our Beaver Colony are brand new to our group; all new Scouters, except me. So much motivation and big hearts within our Scouter team, and a great bunch of spunky youth. I am only just realizing, to my dismay, that our group has been floundering financially for years and is below rock bottom. Group is (obviously) very unwilling to help finance our first camp and are being very difficult and evasive in communications. I have kept my brand new team ( except one) unaware of this problem, since it could destroy morale. Oh: another FIRST- first time this group has done Canadian Path in Beavers ( and we are actually loving it) This is probably not an uncommon situation, especially with smaller groups. If the group isn't being terribly communicative, or terribly supportive at all, then the next best thing to do is turn to the parents and be up front with them. Let them know that the group isn't really going to be able to help offset activity costs at this time, and maybe even survey them as to what they think a reasonable cost would be for a weekend-length camp. In particular, there are three dollar-value figures to capture here: The maximum out-of-pocket cost families are willing to pay for a weekend camp. The maximum out-of-pocket cost for a day event. The overall maximum amount of additional fees over the course of a year. So, for example: maybe families will be willing to pay $80 for a weekend camp, $30 for a day event, and not more than $200 in total for all activities per year. With that feedback, it will be easier to draw up plans for the year, to decide which activities are and aren't within reach. Beyond that, it becomes a question of looking for fundraising opportunities: popcorn sales, Apple Day, bottle drives, and other such things. Communication with the Scouting Council covering the area will also be important; Council may have information about additional fundraising options, or places to turn to for grants and donations.OPEN INVITATION: If your group has recovered from being in a similar financial situation, we'd love to have you on the podcast to tell us about how the group was able to turn the situation around. Shout-Outs For the second week in a row, Raul gets a shout-out. He left a comment on Facebook, thanking us for answering his question about the word “woggle” on-air: Ayer, cuando estaba acabando de correr, lo escuché y me encantó el "shout-out"...Escuché un mensaje que había enviado preguntando sobre como se escribía una palabra que había escuchado varias veces en el episodio 60... Ken muy amablemente me respondió.Pues bien, ayer me hizo mucha ilusión escuchar mi mensaje. Gracias, Ken Second, Eric — friend and occasional guest of the podcast, Scouter to the Northern Lights MedVents — sent us a message with a happy remembrance of a long-ago camp: Hey Ken and Colin, just catching up on some podcasts, and was listening to Episode 65. Colin commented that Scouts have been solving Escape Room puzzles for decades and it made me think back to one of the 100+ camps I attended as a Scout (100+11??) with the theme Spy Vs Spy. That night time wide game where patrols had to collect the parts of a spy message decoder (a simple circuit board, memory chip, battery, and rudimentary LCD numeric display) that when correctly assembled gave you the message 100+. After close to 20 some years in Scouting, NOTHING has come close to that amazing wide game puzzle... And, as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. If you're listening to us on Scouting Radio right now, let us know; reach out and get in touch. We'd love to hear from you. Adrian Goldberg travels around Birmingham meeting with fellow Brummies, all of whom have a special vision for the future of Birmingham's landscape. He begins on a huge piece of blank wasteland in the very heart of the city centre which is waiting to become the home of the Birmingham terminal for HS2. He's joined by Waheed Nazir from Birmingham City Council to consider how the anticipation of HS2 is already changing Birmingham's skyline as well the city's sense of its own future. Adrian joins the Birmingham Trees for Life team in a park on the far Eastern rim of the city. The team have coordinated the planting of over 70,000 trees in Birmingham over the past 10 years with many groups of children and volunteers. His next stop is to Britain's first retrofit zero carbon house, just 2 miles out of the city centre in Balsall Heath. Architect John Christophers has a special interest in Sustainable Architecture, and his recently built family home is an inspiring vision of how existing housing stock could be transformed to become carbon neutral homes. When an architectural critic from The Times visited this house he said: "I have seen the future, and it's in Birmingham". Adrian's next visit is to the Apple Day at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. This is the brain child of HR manager Antony Cobley who has led an initiative to plant orchards and gardens around the hospital grounds for patients and relatives to the hospital. Sutton Park is one of Europe's largest urban parks and is 9 miles to the north of the city centre. Here Adrian joins a group of Rangers and volunteers on a project to transform a dense wood of holly which hasn't been coppiced for over 200 years, to an open woodland of ancient oaks and newly planted rowan trees. Presented by Adrian Goldberg Produced by Rosie Boulton.

For thirty years, the arts and environment organisation Common Ground has used Dorset as a kind of laboratory for its work celebrating local distinctiveness, before rolling their projects out elsewhere around the UK. Helen Mark hears from Common Ground co-founder Sue Clifford why they began Apple Day events near her home in Shaftesbury, as a way of celebrating and protecting old apple orchards. Helen also meets the sculptor Peter Randall-Page who was commissioned to carve some small wayside sculptures along a footpath above Lulworth Cove, and the composer Karen Wimhurst reflects on Confluence, the three year music project she was involved in that celebrated the river Stour, from its source to the sea. But now that the Common Ground co-founders are retiring, Helen also meets Adrian Cooper, who's taken the helm, and is steering the organisation into new waters. Producer: Mark Smalley.
