Doug speaks with Karen Grosz, also known as the "Monday Videos Lady" for her enthusiastic weekly motivational videos. Karen shares her journey from being shy to becoming a successful team building expert and author. She also discusses the importance of goal setting, authenticity, and embracing life's opportunities. KEY TAKEAWAYS Setting and sharing goals is crucial for success. Tell individuals and groups about your goals to find support and accountability. Authenticity is key to personal and professional growth. Karen found more success when she embraced her natural grey hair and true self. Protecting and nurturing your energy is essential. Karen maintains her enthusiasm through good sleep, nutrition, and surrounding herself with positive people. Collaborative art can be a powerful tool for team building, fostering communication and shared pride in accomplishments. Changing your mindset from being miserable to cheerful can dramatically improve your life and relationships. It's never too late to pursue new goals or try new things. Karen did stand-up comedy for the first time recently, proving age is just a number. Young people often want to learn from those with experience. Don't be afraid to share your wisdom and lessons learned. During times of transition, we have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves and become the person we want to be. BEST MOMENTS "You only hurt yourself in the kitchen until you decide to stop hurting yourself in the kitchen." "You have one life and you get to make the choice. And we need you there, whatever you're good at." "Share your goal. When you figure out what it is and you really want it, you have to tell individuals and you have to tell rooms full of people because there is somebody out there who is going to help you make it come true." "You're not too old. And it's not too late. You just have to start whatever the goal is that you want to achieve." "When you are scared of going for your goal, when you're scared of making that choice, that change in your life, when you're scared of going from morose to the happy, you just have to remember that that thing you're scared of is not a bear. It is a cow." Owen called in from the banks of Lake Oahe outside of Pierre, South Dakota where he and Ziek had just finished doing some pre-fishing for the 50th South Dakota Governor's Cup Walleye Tournament. This is a fascinating podcast as Owen goes into great detail about how he and Ziek overcame one of the toughest Walleye Bites that the Gov Cup has seen in a very long time! You will learn how Owen and Ziek were able to somehow get into seventh place with just three fish at the end of Day One of the tournament. Then you will hear about the discussion that Own and Ziek had that night. They decided to throw caution and their original plan to the wind and head to…. Well, you will have to listen to the podcast to find out where they went and how they went from being in 7th place and almost 18 pounds behind the leaders to winning the whole thing! What were they using on the end of their lines to pull that off? How many fish did they have to catch to get to get that magic 5? What was their final winning weight? When you listen you will learn the answers to those questions and many others. Plus, you will also learn about Owen's career as young professional fisherman on the National Walleye Tour! This was a VERY interesting part of the podcast as well since we rarely get to learn about tournaments outside of Montana. The National Walleye Tour takes Owen all across the country including the Great Lakes and even as far east as New York. Owen even gave some advice for other young men and women that might want to give the National Walleye Tour a try! Owen is only 20 years old but he is wise way beyond his years when it comes to fishing. Jamelle Bouie then joins as he dives right into the Supreme Court's crisis of legitimacy, with half of the justices under fire for some form of corruption, while the Chief Justice refuses to recognize the system of checks and balances, walking through why Democratic leadership is refusing to even contemplate Court reform due to severe fears of backlash, despite it being a fight against unpopular institution full of unpopular people pursuing unpopular policies while under a corruption scandal. Next, they dive into the departure of Tucker Carlson from Fox News and whether it will genuinely have an impact on the company's fascist indoctrination, before wrapping up with an assessment of a 2024 Democratic primary. Tim Heidecker then calls in to teach Sam a thing or two about what real journalism looks like. Jessica Wahl Turner is the Executive Director of the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (ORR), America's leading coalition of outdoor recreation trade associations and organizations. Currently, the ORR is comprised of 31 national association members that serve more than 100,000 outdoor-related businesses, which is an amazing feat considering that the organization is less than three years old. Jessica and her team bring together all sectors of the outdoor economy to harness the industry's collective power and advance issues related to conservation, outdoor access, public lands infrastructure, and much more. Whether she's in the halls of Congress or the wide-open spaces of the American West, Jessica is a devoted, effective advocate for the outdoor industry. - This conversation is part of the Montana Governor's Office of Outdoor Recreation's "Business of Outdoor Recreation Summit"—a gathering of some of the most notable names in the outdoor recreation sector. Because of COVID, this year's summit has gone virtual, but the need for collaboration and idea-sharing among industry experts has never been greater. The Outdoor Recreation Roundtable is a case study in focusing on common goals, putting aside petty differences, and overcoming challenges with new and innovative approaches. So I was thrilled to get a chance to learn exactly how Jessica has gone about leading her organization during these changing times. - Jessica and I connected on Zoom and had a fun, educational, and wide-ranging conversation about all aspects of the outdoor economy. We started by chatting about the history of ORR and precisely what the organization does. We also discussed the Great American Outdoors Act and how this landmark legislation will positively affect the outdoor industry. We talked about COVID's effect on the outdoor economy and how ORR is working to support outdoor businesses during these unprecedented times. We also talked about how the outdoor economy contributes to rural and urban areas and how all aspects of the outdoor economy are interconnected. We also spend some time talking about Jessica's educational and professional backgrounds, and what makes her so uniquely qualified for her current role. And as usual, we discuss favorite books, favorite outdoor adventures, and she offers some wise parting words. - This was a wonderful conversation, and I hope you enjoy. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock claims that he will “fiercely defend the Second Amendment rights of our citizens.” But it's pretty clear the governor doesn't understand the Second Amendment, and he doesn't mean what he says. He vetoed a bill that would have ended state cooperation with the enforcement of any future federal gun laws. And his reason for issuing the veto makes it pretty clear he is either ignorant of the Constitution and the law, or a liar.
