We went to our biggest anime convention yet and what better way to celebrate than having our longest Con-versations episode yet. This time, Austin and Tori review Otakon 2024 which was held in Washington, DC from August 2-4th, 2024. This episode would have been out earlier, but between life stuff and us recording for over three and a half hours, it was a lot to get through. Totally worth it though, if you ask me, due in large part to our very special guests, Coop and Maddy! Coop you may know from their work at Discotek Media, Anime News Network, AnimEigo, J-Novel Club, and their own podcast, Dude, You Remember Macross? and Maddy you may have heard appear on shows like Giant Robot FM and Chatty AF: The Anime Feminist Podcast. Yes, this episode is very late. Life sometimes gets in the way of getting this show done. Nevertheless, there's quite a bit to talk about as we are in the "pre-Anime Expo" buildup, namely some big moves from Science SARU and GKIDS, a good amount of manga and light novel synopsis reading, a deep dive on Netflix's anime data, and the (hopefully) permanent financial demise of GAINAX. All of that, and so much more to come both in this show and in the coming weeks. Call it the prelude to the madness in LA. P.S. the Attack on Titan discussion episode that was promised last year? Watching spring training games is this weird exercise in determining whether any given player will be anything, or maybe they're just taking a spot to give others a rest. Or maybe they're younger folks with real promise. Or maybe they just had a particularly good game that day. This episode, we're talking about Nozomu Mochitsuki (author) and Gilse's (illustrator) Tearmoon Empire published by J-Novel Club. Tearmoon Empire credits: Translator: David TengEditors: Samantha J. The lesson of Toonami turning 25 is that, in 2022, people will yell over everything they do, be it for the good or bad or indifferent. But that's where this show comes in, to lay out a grounded overview of what to expect from the block in the future, be it for the good or bad or indifferent. And along with that lengthy discussion, there are more details over the Crunchyroll-Funimation whatever-it-is and what to (not) expect going forward, information regarding the Toei hack, more details on a perplexing 3DCG film, and above all else Discotek is here to show that they are still absolutely wild with their pickups and restorations. As many should come to expect, by now. Apologies for this show being late, things have been busy. Stay tuned for a make-good in the coming days. Some of the biggest acquisitions including the return of series like Shaman King from Kodansha USA, as well as Slayers from J-Novel Club, both of which we were so excited about that we just HAD to pull in Vlord into to room for a bit to talk about! We also take a deep dive into the latest thoroughly researched analysis from Comics Beat, as well as report on some other unfortunate events happening in the general comics industry, including but not limited to the exposure of Warren Ellis. Truthfully, this episode became much more bloated then we initially planned for, which is why we will saving the rest of our news for next week, along with some thoughts on the latest simulpubs and even some titles from the newest line of Irodori Comics! 2019 marks the centennial anniversary of the Yuri genre, celebrating 100 years of girls in love challenging the expectations placed upon them by patriarchal definitions of love and gender. To commemorate the legacy of the genre and the stories that’ve been told, we interviewed Erica Friedman, a Yuri historian and tastemaker who has been at the center of the fandom for over two decades. Erica is the founder of Yuricon, an organization dedicated to uniting the community through fan events and scholarship, and has written extensively on Yuri on her blog Okazu, which has reached its 4000th post after over 16 years! Erica’s planning an incredible number of events to celebrate 100 Years of Yuri with the community, including numerous convention appearances and a Yuri pilgrimage in Japan in the fall, all leading up to the release of her comprehensive book on Yuri set to come out in 2020! We chat with Erica about the work she’s done growing a proactive community around Yuri, the history of the genre and its fan culture, the influence of digital comics in helping newer creators and more untraditional stories to get published, and how we’ve reached a point where these stories can be spread more widely thanks to the efforts of trailblazers who fought to create a space for those who came after them to work in and expand. Like the pun in Okazu’s namesake, we hope our interview serves as an appetizer before you enjoy the full buffet of information out there about yuri and the works themselves! Our conversation with Erica is the first of an entire month of interviews with manga industry professionals about their work and fandom. Up next will be our interview with Joey Weiser, the award-winning comic book artist and creator of the Mermin series, who joins us to discuss his new book Ghost Hog (available NOW!) and the influence that manga and japanese culture have had on his work. Manga Mavericks EP. 86: 100 Years of Yuri with Erica Friedman

We’ll be releasing the interview this coming Friday, but you can listen to the episode early by becoming a $2 Patron on our Patreon! We’re also offering a ton of other content to our Patrons, including a monthly Patron Bonus Pod, Show Notes, Bloopers, Unreleased Podcasts and more! Last week we sadly lost two influential mangaka whose works have become cultural institutions. Kazuhiko Kato, more popularly known by his pen name Monkey Punch, and Kazuo Koike have both passed away due to pneumonia. It’s bittersweet that Koike’s final tweets were reminiscing on his friend and rival, as both of their iconic series competed for popularity in Weekly Manga Action over nearly 50 years ago. His very last internet words were “I’m really going to miss him,” and we at Manga Mavericks feel the same about both creators. Lupin the Third is a franchise we both adore and one that has endured and entertained generations. Many of Koike’s works, including Lone Wolf and Cub, are absolute classics, and his legacy and influence on the medium can be seen through the numerous talents he helped nurture like Rumiko Takahashi and Tetsuo Hara, among many others. Both creators’ influence extend beyond manga, having even influence film directors abroad like Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino through film adaptations of their works. So while we mourn their passing, we also find solace that their life’s work and legacy will continue to live on. Though we’d like to spend more time eulogizing them, there’s been a lot of other news in the manga world we need to talk about. There’re new series, new licenses, and exciting opportunities for aspiring mangaka to break-in to the industry! Plus, we’ve got two new Jump Starts to talk about! Or, rather, “Manga Plus Starts” since they’re exclusive to that service. Did Heart Gear and Spy x Family soote our broken hearts, or are they series we’d rather exclude from the Manga Plus family? Listen in and find out! Look forward to next week’s podcast where we answer all your We Never Learn Q&As AND make an exciting announcement! What could it be? You’ll have to listen and see! For this episode of Manga Mavericks, the part of Sid will played by both Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi, as Sid had this thing called “school” to focus on until he is finally finished with that and is ready to get back to slaving away at all the unfinished podcasts he still has to edit. Anyway, while Sid is off on his own ventures, Colton takes care of the show this week and covers the news with the help of Shonen Sunday fanatic, Bomber D Rufi (@kiirobon), as they talk about the usual new upcoming manga serials, licenses and live action films! Some highlights include a list of the biggest first printings from the biggest manga publishers within the last year, Viz Media licensing of Dragon Ball: That Time I Was Reincarnated as Yamcha, as well as some new info about Hiro Mashima’s upcoming new series! Afterwards, Maxy Barnard (@MaxyTheBee) from Friendship! Effort! Victory!, joins the show to discuss and dissect Takamagahara from Jyuuzou Kawai. Another prematurely ending Shonen Jump manga that ran simultaneously in English and Japanese via Viz Media before the era of Jump Starts! Colton and Maxy discuss how they feel about the series in relation to its many unexplored ideas and themes that were shadowed by both some less than stellar storytelling and various production issues behind the scenes. Next episode, we’ll be discussing our thoughts on Viz’s latest round of Jump Starts, as well two recent one shots from both Hiroshi Shiibashi (Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan) and Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro (Toriko). Sid’s Note: As of this post I am hopefully finished with the bulk of my academic obligations. I had hoped to never miss an episode, but alas it was an unavoidable inevitability considering my workload this semester. Sadly, the last few weeks have been highly traumatic and stressful, but hopefully this ordeal is all over with and I can return to the podcast unburdened. I must extend a huge thanks to the wonderful Maxy Barnard and Bomber D Rufi for covering for me this week. They are always a delight to listen to, and I’m looking forward to personally talking with them again in future shows. BIG NEWS! Because our Kenta Shinohara podcasts were delayed we didn’t get around to covering a lot of important news from the past couple months. To remedy that, we decided to record a big news-focused podcast to get everyone up to speed! …This was a big bad idea. We accumulated nearly twelve pages worth of news, tallying to over one hundred stories in total! To make matters worse, we began recording late at night after I was already exhausted from drawing for nearly 20 hours that day. Thanks to a spotty internet connection, we ended up needing two recording sessions and over four hours of rough audio to cover everything we wanted to. Needless to say, recording this was a tiring process. You can definitely hear the exhaustion in my voice by the end of this podcast, alongside Colton’s groans of impatience. Though frankly, listening back to this episode I did most of the talking, so it’s kinda funny that Colton was more vocally upset by the experience. ^^, Regardless of how frustrating the process was, this was a necessary podcast to make. Discussing manga news is the reason this show originally came into being, and doing a purely news-focused episode brings us nostalgically back to the roots of our early episodes. Did we go a little overboard in the mountain of content we attempted to surmount? Perhaps. But hopefully you’ll find this podcast as valuable as we found these stories important to discuss. From lists to licenses, endings to sequels, controversies to scandals, and adaptations to anime this podcast is jam-packed with all the stories you need to know to understand where the manga industry is at as of Spring 2018! Rounding off our My Hero Academia podcast trilogy is this long-awaited Q&A special! We received so many questions for our Manga Fight we couldn't possibly use them all, so we organized this special episode to answer them! Both Jeff Ruberg and Doctor return to give their takes on your questions, and what results is the realization that all podcasters are evil, Stain is best girl, Mineta should make a Spirit Bomb out of sticky balls, and lots of lucrative ideas for ScrewAttack! Before we get to all that we have to cover the news first, but because Colton abandoned the podcast to go to Anime St. Louis to buy cigarettes, I had to find another co-host for the week. Thankfully, that scumbag VLordGTZ just happened to be in the room so I pulled him over, sat him down, and forced him to talk about the latest happenings in the manga industry for fourty-five minutes. We discuss how confusing Yu-Gi-Oh! is now, dance on Fairy Tail's grave, and speculate on the Attack on Titan/Madagascar crossover that is totally definitely going to happen one day. We close off talking about a list of japanese readers' favorite Shonen Jump mangaka. Did MHA's Kohei Horikoshi make the list? Listen and find out!
