Canterbury city centre has been closed off after a fire broke out at an abandoned former department store. Firefighters have been working through the night at the site of the old Debenhams – one person has been treated for smoke inhalation. Also in today's podcast, you can hear from a man who was fined for driving on a street where traffic is banned during term time even though the school was on holiday. He says he drove down the road in Chatham when the school was on half-term break and was shocked when he received the fine in the post. Two secondary schools could be closed by the government and reopened under new bosses after damning Ofsted inspections pushed them both into special measures. The sites were rated inadequate and have now been issued “termination warning notices”.Plans to turn an abandoned nightclub into flats have been scrapped as developers claim the housing market “isn't particularly strong”.Bosses in Ashford had given the green light for the transformation of the old Liquid site into housing, but it's been confirmed that's no longer happening. And a work is well underway to transform a former Kent gaol into a bustling cafe. It's all part of the £10.5 million renovation of Dover's Maison Dieu – you can hear from one of the coordinators about what it will all look like when it's finished.

Developer Merritt Lancaster, a co-founder of Bridger Properties, participated in a panel on the economic health of Marietta Square. Lancaster focused on why his company viewed the square as a profitable investment and what residents wanted. According to an online survey, residents wanted more food and beverage businesses in the area. Lancaster said attracting new restaurants and bars would keep dollars in the Square. However, a resident warned that Marietta is not the same as Roswell or Woodstock, and its local restaurants and shops are what make it special. Lancaster's firm has faced controversy since September when it hiked rents or declined to renew leases for storefronts on Church Street. The city of Acworth announced the permanent closure of the School Street railroad crossing downtown due to frequent collisions between vehicles and trains since 2018. The city has been unsuccessful in identifying alternate crossing locations to supplement the closure. The incidents have cost the police and public works departments money and resources, and the recent collision rendered the south cross arm inoperable. The city attributed the frequent issues to the railroad's track raising, leading to trucks and trailers getting stuck. The closure aims to prevent a potential public health event from train derailments carrying hazardous materials through the community. Virgil Woods, a crossing guard for Cobb Schools in Georgia, has been recognized as the 2022 Outstanding Crossing Guard of the Year for the West GA Safe Routes to School region. Woods has been serving as a crossing guard since 2018 and was praised for his dedication to students and their safety, often being the first person students see in the morning and the last one they see in the afternoon. Woods was awarded the title after being nominated by several students, parents, and staff who praised his warm demeanor and dedication to ensuring the safety of the students he serves. This is the fourth time a Cobb Schools Crossing Guard has won the award since 2019. The Development Authority of Cobb County has passed a bond inducement resolution to provide tax incentives to a public charter school, Northwest Classical Academy, located in Kennesaw, Georgia. The state-commissioned charter school has requested $30 million in tax-exempt bonds, most of which will be used to purchase the 35-acre property it currently leases and pursue renovations and expansion. The school is open to all Georgia students, but a majority of its students come from Cobb County. The Hillsdale College's Barney Charter School Initiative-affiliated school has about 640 students in grades K-8, with plans to expand to 950 students across grades K-12. A Wheeler high school grad had a big performance to put the Celtics up 3-1 in their playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks. Here Allatoona got a pair of superior pitching performances from Drew Fields and Ethan Sutton to shut down the Raiders 3-0 and 10-2 in the opening round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs. In Game 1, Fields needed only 75 pitches to throw a complete game, three-hit shutout while striking out five. Allatoona scored two runs in the first and one in the second, but were held to only four hits in the game. Sam Tomczak had a hit and the only RBI. In Game 2, Sutton pitched 5⅔ innings, allowed four hits and struck out seven. Ethan Crawley was 2-for-4 with a home run and drove in four. Paul Cruz went 4-for-5 with a triple and drove in three. Greyson Coker finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, Tomczak had two hits and an RBI and Anthony Planeta added two hits. Allatoona will travel to Blessed Trinity for a second round series, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday. About 99% of educators in Cobb County schools plan to return for the upcoming school year, an increase from last year's 98%. This high retention rate is attributed to Cobb's reputation as one of the top places to work in Georgia and the nation. Nearly 1,500 professionals attended Cobb's recent job fair at Truist Park, coming from as far away as California. Cobb Schools has also partnered with the University of West Georgia to offer advanced degrees to educators at no cost through Georgia's BEST, with about 4,000 expressing interest. Cobb Schools is hosting another job fair on June 8, primarily focused on filling classified support positions but with teaching positions also available.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Patagonia Museum was granted 501c (3) status by the IRS in 2007. The Patagonia Museum has two immediate goals: (1) maintaining the 1914 Grammar School as the facility in Patagonia for a museum and (2) preserving and restoring the historic territorial one-room Lochiel Schoolhouse. The Lochiel Schoolhouse was built prior to 1905. Research continues to search for an exact date of construction. The Lochiel/La Noria School District was in place in the 1890s and may have originated as far back as the 1880s. Again research continues to search for the exact dates of origination. The schoolhouse was last utilized in the school year 1972-1973. Years of neglect and vandalism followed. In September 2010, The Patagonia Museum and the Patagonia Elementary School entered into a lease agreement allowing The Patagonia Museum to preserve the school site for educational and historic purposes. In January 2011, The Patagonia Museum received a grant from the Patagonia Regional Community Foundation to provide arborist services and building weatherization. Since then, numerous grants and volunteer hours have benefited the Lochiel Schoolhouse. Restoration work on the Lochiel Schoolhouse was completed in the spring of 2022. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loren-alberts/message

Transport Minister Michael Wood plans to give councils the power to ban cars on roads at certain times and remove kerbside parking in favour of cycleways and bus lanes - without prior consultation. Wood also wants councils to restrict traffic outside schools to encourage parents and children to walk and cycle - improving exercise safety. But the minister has assured parents who drive their children to school that they have nothing to worry about and will still be able to drop them off nearby. The proposals come from the "Reshaping Streets" report, devised to help councils and Auckland Transport (AT) quickly make widespread changes to streets to support public transport, cycling, walking and people-friendly spaces. Transport Minister Michael Wood. Photo / Alex Burton Wood said the changes will also help meet the country's climate change emission reduction targets and make roads safer for all users. National Party transport spokesman Simeon Brown described "Reshaping Streets" as a radical proposal that revealed Labour's deeply ingrained anti-car ideology. Under the proposals, as drafted, councils would have the power to "prohibit or restrict the use of motor vehicles, or one or more classes of motor vehicles, on the roadway". They will also be allowed to pilot street changes for up to two years without consulting with impacted people, businesses and communities beforehand. Councils will have to give the public a reasonable opportunity to provide feedback during the trial and can modify the pilot. Before the pilot ends, councils need to decide whether to make any or all of the piloted changes permanent. Another proposal allows councils to "filter" traffic on roads by installing bollards or planter boxes. This will stop cars and/or other vehicles using roads in favour of pedestrians, cyclists and people on scooters and skateboards. Wood's proposal to get more parents and children out of cars and walking or cycling to school is called "School Streets" and follows similar changes in the United Kingdom and Canada. It would restrict traffic at or near a school during drop-off and pick-up times. Councils will also have the power to create a "School Street" or set one up as part of a pilot, but Wood said he expected councils will work with schools when making changes. The combined changes go beyond AT's controversial new parking strategy to remove kerbside parking for cycleways, which has been pushed back until after the local body election in October after failing to get public support and for some further consultation. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff trashed the first version that gave AT unfettered power to remove parking as "totally arrogant" and anti-democratic. Goff said the "Reshaping Streets" proposals will not undermine the democratic process and said it allows for greater flexibility around consultation. "Local authorities would be able to modify a pilot while it is underway in response to feedback, leading to improved outcomes for streetscape upgrades that better meet the needs of local communities," he said. Auckland Mayor Phil Goff. Photo / Dean Purcell AT, which is responsible for any new roading powers, would be working with Auckland Council to prepare a joint submission on the proposals, a spokesman said. "We're not in a position to give an AT perspective until we have finalised our submission with the council," said the spokesman, adding AT had not formally advocated for any of the proposals. He said the revised version of the draft parking strategy will be the overarching strategy guiding the management of on-street parking in Auckland. Simon Douglas, general manager of motoring affairs for the Automobile Association, said there were some sensible technical adjustments in Wood's proposals, such as changes around bus shelters, making it easier to create pedestrian malls and community street events. But he said AA would want to look closely at the proposal to pilot street changes for up to two years with no pre-consultation with people, businesses and communities who might be impacted. "We have seen recently in Wellington cycleway changes that involved the removal of parking has really concerned small local businesses and it got as far as proposing judicial challenges," Douglas said. Simeon Brown said councils will have significantly heightened powers to carve up streets at their own discretion. "This means less consultation with communities when it comes to creating cycleways, removing on-street car parks, installing speed bumps and reducing speed limits. National Party transport spokesman Simeon Brown. Photo / Mark Mitchell "Kiwis could also lose access to their street due to 'modal filters', which would effectively allow the banning of cars, or some types of cars, from some streets. Additionally, streets could even be used as playgrounds at certain times during the day. "These proposals are radical and take road users out of the picture," he said. Wood sees the proposals through a different lens, saying many streets do not allow people to live, shop and meet with friends and whānau safely and easily. "Some of the rules for managing streets are 50 years old and outdated. We're moving to update them to reflect people's needs and give communities new ways to be involved in changes that affect them," he said. Public consultation on the proposals runs for six week until September 19. Wood plans to have a new regulatory rule for the "Reshaping Streets" proposals in place by the end of the year and some changes to the Local Government Act coming to Parliament next year. - Bernard Orsman, NZ HeraldSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Harvey, had said earlier. A storm hadn't killed everyone aboard… Harvey himself had. (The Final Voyage of the Bluebelle) *** When a loved one passes away, we sometimes wish we could speak to them one last time. Some people report they received phone calls or voicemails they believe are from their deceased loved ones. Sometimes they come through as eerie otherworldly static, while other times the ghostly caller is able to communicate one last message. We'll share a few true stories from people who have received phone calls from the beyond. (Phone Calls From Beyond The Grave) *** If you buy a furnished home and move the furniture to clean the floor – and the furniture moves back on its own – you can be pretty sure you've just moved into a haunted house. That's exactly what one family in Rockford, Illinois found out. (A Haunting on School Street) *** One of the greatest monsters ever to be brought to the screen was The Mummy, portrayed by Boris Karloff. We have, of course, seen numerous recreations of the creature since the original Universal film, but still, the image is grotesque and frightening no matter the incarnation. To see a mummy in real-life is that much more shocking. But real fear… real terror… would be if you yourself were to be mummified… while still alive. (To Be Mummified Alive) *** And I'll end the episode with the story that I began it with – a short story by Louisa May Alcott called “Lost in a Pyramid”… or “The Mummy's Curse”. A story that went pretty much unnoticed when it was originally published in 1869, but has had somewhat become undead since 1998 when it was rediscovered and is now considered an influential example of early “mummy's curse” narratives.SOURCES AND ESSENTIAL WEB LINKS…“The Final Voyage of the Bluebelle” by Lucia for The Ghost In My Machine: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/23utyhja “Phone Calls From Beyond the Grave” by Amanda Ashley for Graveyard Shift: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/7bw36uh4 “A Haunting on School Street” by Kathi Kresol for Haunted Rockford: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/s3c76yeb “To Be Mummified Alive' by Bipin Dimri for Historic Mysteries: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/j89cukfe “The Mummy's Curse/Lost In a Pyramid” by Louisa May Alcott: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/pwd9h3cb Weird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library. Good morning, RVA! It’s 40 °F, and we might could see temperatures a few degrees warmer later this afternoon—but this is about what we’ve got. For the rest of this week, you can expect a bunch of days with highs in the 40s and 50s and lots sunshine. I think that sounds pretty good for the first week of December.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 1,893↗️ new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealth and 4↘️ new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 180↗️ new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 68, Henrico: 69, and Richmond: 43). Since this pandemic began, 464 people have died in the Richmond region. I feel like I haven’t written enough about coronavirus vaccines in this space, and that’s probably about to change—which is good news! The New York Times has put together a wonderful COVID-19 vaccine tracker that should give you all the information you need on each specific vaccine in development. The two we’ll most likely see in Richmond (and soon) are the Moderna and Pfizer candidates. Both companies have announced that they will apply for emergency use authorization, which, if approved by the FDA, would mean—boom!—vaccines on the ground. NPR’s Sarah McCammon sat down with Governor Northam to talk about vaccine timelines and availability, and it sounds like the first round of vaccines will exist within the next two weeks, but will, of course, be extremely limited and reserved for hospital workers. Northam says Virginia will get 70,000 doses in this first round, which is not a ton of doses to spread around to eight million Virginians. Also, and only kind of related, I learned from reading this interview that the governor’s sense of smell still has not returned from his coronavirus infection.Yesterday, I was like “I guess we’ll just have to see what individual schools and school districts decide to do about winter sports.” Then, last night, I saw Tom Lappas from the Henrico Citizen report that Henrico County has canceled their school-sponsored winter sports. Also on schools, Jessica Nocera at the Richmond Times-Dispatch has a quick follow up on Chesterfield County’s decision to have students move back to virtual learning. Two items of note! First, while the County did see student and staff with positive cases of the coronavirus, “there is no substantial evidence of schools-related coronavirus transmission.” Second, this quote from Chesterfield School Board Chair Debbie Bailey gets it right, “The community needs to pick cocktails or schools. I mean because literally the community transmission rate is so high and that’s why we had to shut down our schools, not because our mitigation strategies were not successful.”On Thanksgiving Day, a driver ran through a red light at the intersection of Chamberlayne and Brookland Park Boulevard, hit two other vehicles, killing Karen Murphy and Kevin Hancock. The driver “was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening.” Chamberlayne is a dangerous, way-too-fast street, and, within the City, intersections along its length see frequent crashes. Just this year, according to the TREDS crash map, we’ve seen seven crashes at Westbrook Avenue, five at North Avenue, five at Walton Avenue, five at Westwood Avenue, five at Brookland Park Boulevard, six at Edge Hill Road, five at Graham Road, six at School Street, and seven at Bacon Street. Just compare the number of crashes along Chamberlayne to those along Brook—a much slower and safer street. As I keep saying in this space, when someone dies using our streets the Department of Public Works, the Richmond Police Department, and the newish Office of Equitable Transit and Mobility should get together, analyze what happened, and implement immediate, pop-up safety improvements. In my opinion, the easiest and cheapest thing to slow traffic down on Chamberlayne would be to convert a lane in either direction into a dedicated bus-only lane. The Governor’s Virginia Marijuana Legalization Work Group has released their report on how to go about legalizing in the Commonwealth. You can read the Governor’s press release here or the full, 482-page report here (PDF) (most of which is appendices, though). Of note from the much shorter Recommendations section (p. 7): a “social equity license category,” a push for local control (obviously), some shade thrown on allowing folks to grow their own plants, and a recommendation for higher taxes for higher THC doses. Honestly, this is a pretty good PDF for learning what other states are doing when it comes to legalizing, taxing, and regulating marijuana. I’ve saved it to my PDF library! Who knows what Virginia will end up doing, but I imagine it will be methodical and take a bunch of years. Related, according to Jack Jacobs at Richmond BizSense, Richmond’s first medical cannabis operator is now up and running in Manchester.Yesterday, the Capital Region Land Conservancy announced that they’d been gifted 13 acres of land on the City’s Southside along Grindall Creek that they’ll, in turn, transfer to the City for use as public open space. Since it’s the Land Conservancy’s entire deal, the new parkland will be protected under a conservation easement in perpetuity. This announcement fits well with the Mayor’s plan to get a park within a 10-minute walk of every Richmonder—especially Black and Brown folks. CRLC says “1,145 people live within a 10-minute walk of the property, of whom 71% are African American.”The Richmond and Henrico Health Districts will host another free COVID-19 testing event today from 10:00 AM—12:00 PM at the Eastern Henrico Health Department (1400 N. Laburnum Avenue). Did you travel over the long weekend? Did you get tested after you returned home? Should you probably go ahead and do that? This morning’s longreadPandemic-Proof Your HabitsI really enjoyed this piece about how important creating new routines during the pandemic can be for one’s mental health. I like that framing, too. We can find newroutines and traditions to celebrate and placate our lizard brains. Our brains are literally overburdened with all the uncertainty caused by the pandemic. Not only is there the seeming capriciousness of the virus, but we no longer have the routines that served as the familiar scaffolding of our lives. Things we had already figured out and relegated to the brain’s autopilot function — going to work, visiting the gym, taking the kids to school, meeting friends for dinner, grocery shopping — now require serious thought and risk analysis. As a result, we have less bandwidth available for higher order thinking: recognizing subtleties, resolving contradictions, developing creative ideas and even finding joy and meaning in life.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.
