Few areas of the United States have as endured as long as Flushing, Queens, a neighborhood with almost over 375 years of history and an evolving cultural landscape that includes Quakers, trees, Hollywood films, world fairs, and new Asian immigration. In this special on-location episode of the Bowery Boys, Greg and special guest Kieran Gannon explore the epic history of Flushing through five specific locations -- the Bowne House, Kingsland Homestead (home of the Queens Historical Society), the Lewis Latimer House Museum, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park and a downtown dumpling restaurant named Old Captain's Dumplings.Built on the marshy banks of Flushing Creek, the original Dutch village of Flushing (or Vlissingen) was populated by English settlers, Quakers like John and Hannah Bownewhose home became one of America's first Quaker meeting places -- and the site of a religious struggle critical to the formation of the future United States.By the early 19th century, Flushing was better known for its tree and shrub nurseries which would introduce dozens of new plant species to North America. After the Civil War, Flushing became a weekend getaway and commuter town for the residents of western Long Island. The former civic center of town -- the 1862 Flushing Town Hall -- is still a vibrant performance venue today. The creation of the borough of Queens in 1898 brought surprising changes to Flushing -- from the arrival of the early silent-film industry to the development of new parks and highways (thanks to our old friend Robert Moses). But the most stunning transformation of all came after 1965 when American immigration quotas were eliminated and Flushing gained thousands of new residents from China, Taiwan, Korea, India, and other South Asian countries.
Governor Hochul has signed a new set of human trafficking bills into law during a visit to Flushing Queens. Meanwhile, David Jakubonis, the 44-year-old man who attacked former Republican gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin at a campaign event last year, has agreed to a plea deal. Finally, starting next week New York City will begin expanding its curbside composting program to Brooklyn, joining Queens, with the Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan to follow next year. Jessica Tisch, Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation joins us to talk about what this means for Brooklyn and the rest of the city.

Just came across an announcement that American Airlines Hangar 3-5 have been cleaned up at LaGuardia Airport That caught my eye as the notice also mentioned that the original AA domestic passenger facility at LGA Hangar 1 one of the most historically significant buildings on any airport anywhere had been demolished. Hangars 3 an 5 look OK in the style of the late 1930s and for sure have a lot of history. But to compare them in value historically with Hangar 1 is like trying to match up some pseudo paste with the Hope Diamond. This is the place that guaranteed that there would be a LaGuardia with airplanes in New York City in 1939. As the airport was building in 1938 at North Beach , Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia still needed an anchor tenant so he set aboutconvincing American Airlines founder CR Smith and the brilliant negotiator CR had just coaxed away from Braniff OM “Red” Red Mosier to move AA's entire corporate headquarters operation from Chicago to New York's new North Beach Airport Hangar1 in Flushing Queens. Mosier made the deal,New York City awarded American "pole position" in Hangar One at the new airport, and AA set up shop in New York City. LaGuardia emerged as the busiest airport in the world. . --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/geoffrey-arend/support

Read by Aja Monet and introduced by Jackie Wang. The teacher, poet, and revolutionary Assata Shakur was born in Flushing Queens. She became a socialist during her college years, and after a visit to the Oakland chapter of the Black Panthers, she joined the Party. Eventually Assata became head of the Harlem Panthers, and went on to join the Black Liberation Army—a loosely organized, underground offshoot of the Black Panthers, which advocated guerilla warfare against the US government. She became the target of federal surveillance for this work, and was arrested in 1973. She wrote “Women in Prison: How it is With Us” during this period, recounting the experiences of the women she was incarcerated with and the racism that led to their imprisonment—especially the criminalization of their survival and their willingness to defend themselves. “Women can never be free in a country that is not free. We can never be liberated in a country where the institutions that control our lives are oppressive. We can never be free while our men are oppressed. Or while the amerikan government and amerikan capitalism remain intact. But it is imperative to our struggle that we build a strong Black women's movement. It is imperative that we, as Black women, talk about the experiences that shaped us; that we assess our strengths and weaknesses and define our own history. It is imperative that we discuss positive ways to teach and socialize our children.” — Assata Shakur

SQR Podcast - The Community Podcast (Entertain - Educate - Encourage)
Royal Flush, ‘The governor of Queens’, honored SQR Podcast with a jewel-filled pow wow, one of our finest episodes yet. Flush settles in and shares of his ‘Black & Cuban connection’, his mom from Cuba and his dad from the hardcore streets. He speaks eloquently of that time and of being a provider from an early age, as his dad was always locked up. “Jail was his home, and when he was home to us he was on vacation”, the perspective Royal Flush had growing up. However, he clarifies the love and respect he has for his dad, who is serving a life sentence. “A Dad doesn’t have to be in your life physically. If he can talk to you, mentally and spiritually, just be on the phone with me, he can still make an impact”. Junior high was great, the street life was better; girls, drugs & guns. Royal flush holds nothing back, clearly expressing his mind set at that time and the negative influence of his role models. Flush shares the origin behind his iconic name, the many trips to Flushing Queens and his unique entry into the hip hop game. “Hip Hop never had to pay my bills; it was like a sport, it was fun for me.” He walks us through his connections to Mic Geronimo, Irv Gotti, French Montana, ODB, Big Pun and Big L to name a few. Flush not only entertains with never told stories from the past, he recaps the current state of Hip hop, the influence of Queens and his views on trap music. Listen as we navigate the colorful life of this 90’s rap icon, who continues to influence and impact hip hop today. www.sqrpodcast.com www.facebook.com/sqrpodcast https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCN2YWGURe_tTvQLiUDcuDGA https://www.instagram.com/sqrpodcast/

It's especially funny.

In 2013, history was made when PS244, a public school in Flushing Queens, NY shifted their school lunch program to fully vegetarian. With the help of today’s guest, Amie Hamlin and her organization, the Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF), PS244 continues to be a landmark accomplishment in the world of health and education. Schools and parents all over the country are using PS244’s story to help enact change in their local community. CHFS’s goal is to change the way schools feed kids by introducing plant-based foods and nutrition education in schools to educate the whole school community. It is federally mandated that all schools must have wellness policies and must have nutrition education goals but like so many, health can be a confusing and daunting subject matter. Many schools don’t have the manpower or time to research and create effective, sustainable programs. This is where CHSF can be of great service to schools. Available resources such as Wellness Wakeup Call, Nutrition Education Posters, Teachers and Nurses Make a Difference Handouts and a Hotline open to anyone looking to inspire change in their school district. CHSF makes it easy for schools to make big change and meet federal guidelines for a little bit of money. But this interview isn’t just about schools and it’s not just for parents. This podcast is for anyone looking to bring more health into their life. Amie is a wealth of information when it comes to plant-based nutrition and living a vegan lifestyle. We discuss the uprising of veganic farming, the power of big business, especially the dairy industry and the politics of food. She shares her compelling story of how she became plant-based and why it took 10 more years before she gave up dairy. Amie is so passionate about educating others on the big changes that we can make by taking very small steps. Amie shares generously throughout the podcast and from the time we spent with her in Ithaca, it’s just clear that she is living her purpose to serve and educate everyone who inquires. We are so grateful to have met such an inspired person who is living what she teaches. Amie is walking the walk and there is so much to learn from her.
