Althea's Crome is an Indiana based fiber artist who has chosen a very niche art form to express her artistic ideas and challenge her own skills as a technician. Crome is a micro-knitter and has been developing her techniques for over 20 years. Using very fine silk threads and needles that she makes herself from surgical stainless steel, she can achieve a gauge of 80 stitches per inch. With so many stitches to the inch, Crome has been able to achieve incredible details in a minute scale. Her tiny pieces of knitting are intended as stand alone, sculptural pieces of art which she often refers to as “sweaterscapes.” Some of her pieces tell autobiographical stories, others are romantic pastoral scenes and many are inspired by the art and artists she admires. Crome's work has been featured around the world in shows, galleries, museums books and even on the silver screen in the movie Coraline.www.altheacrome.comwww.sofst.org

Crome Yellow, published in 1921 was Aldous Huxley's first novel. In it he satirizes the fads and fashions of the time. It is the witty story of a house party at ‘Crome' where there is a gathering of bright young things. We hear some of the history of the house from Henry Wimbush, its owner and self appointed historian; Apocalypse is prophesied, virginity is lost, and inspirational aphorisms are gained in a trance. Our hero, Denis, tries to capture it all in poetry and is disappointed in love. The author, Aldous Huxley, was born in 1894 and began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties; this was his first novel and established his literary reputation. In education, resources and time are scarce, yet the demand for performance is sky high. School leaders invest money and labour into improving their schools, navigating trade offs along the way. But what if one of the biggest improvements we could make to our schools was something we already do? What if enhancing teamwork so that school teams thrive, was actually the secret ingredient to success? The Power of Teams explores evidence from across sectors, including education, to find out what high-performing teams share, and how we can adapt the most effective teamwork strategies to the unique environment of a school. The book outlines a model of teamwork factors that contribute to truly thriving teams, with theory, research, tangible actions for school teams, and a range of expert voices who contribute their experience in case studies.Effective teamwork leads to purpose, belonging, trust, learning, and, ultimately, high performance. When we better understand the nuances of how teams can thrive, we discover the real Power of Teams.

A few months ago, Sam Crome, Deputy Head at St. Peter's Catholic School, delivered a talk for HEP's Big Idea on the 'power of teams'. The talk was powerful, inviting both leaders and members of teams think deeply about what is involved in becoming and maintaining a successful team. If you haven't yet seen the recording of it, I highly recommend you take a look before listening to this episode. In this episode of HEP Talks, I wanted to get deeper behind the concepts behind the 'power of teams' and discover what some of the most important traits of high-performing teams are, and why. I asked Sam questions about how to establish a sense of psychological safety in schools, why debriefing is important, and whether or not teams are humans' most important tool. This is part 2 of that interview, and we hope it will be useful for everyone who leads, creates, or partakes in team activities in schools. You can find part 1 earlier in our podcast feed Sam's Big Idea talk: https://vimeo.com/799081076 Sam's Blog: https://pocketwisdom.blog/author/samcrome1/

Ep. 83 Growing up, Hollie (like so many of us) constantly heard the message that she needed to be thinner, smarter, faster, prettier. She heard it from the media, family, school, friends. As a result she became obsessed with how she looked, what she ate, how much she exercised and so much more. To adapt to this backwards and unhealthy cultural norm, she adopted an “all or nothing” mindset; if she couldn't do something perfectly (eat, exercise, wear make up), then she wouldn't do it at all. And this lose-lose lifestyle left her feeling like a failure no matter what she did. The end result was that she didn't know how to listen to herself, she didn't understand what she needed or how important an aligned and holistic mindset is when building habits like good nutrition and essential movement. Everything began to change when she was diagnosed with PCOS (Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome) and told that her ‘dysfunctional body' would never be able to bring children into the world naturally. After riding a roller coaster of emotions and running through every thought possible, she knew that "there had to be a better way.” And she knew that the “better way” needed to start with listening to and learning to love her body. For years did the best she could, naturally conceived 2 beautiful children and built a life she thought was perfect. It wasn't until being “surprised” with a third child did she begin to commit to building the bio-unique lifestyle that her body, mind and soul needed. And now through her work as an educator, coach, mentor and guide she supports a flourishing community of women as they uncover their bio-unique lifestyle, create their own solid mind-body connection and learn how to enjoy a full happy life. Hajar's still not in the reading swing of things and only managed half of Crome Yellow, so she and Curtis decided to get on with an episode for the hell of it, and talk a bit about the last few months - what they've read, what they haven't read, and why Crome Yellow was a no-go for both of them! This is an apology episode for being SO behind, but we promise we'll be back reading and chatting again!!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-dabblers-book-club. Hosted on Acast. Since experts have been establishing such strong connections between the gut and the brain, it makes sense we wanted to have today's guest on our show! We're lucky enough to be joined by Hollie Chrome of Hollie Chrome Holistic Wellness. Hollie specializes in supporting women in feeling empowered about their Health and Wellness through creating and achieving their own unique Wellness Vision. Hollie works with many women who have felt like they were never successful in achieving their health goals, like they were in a continual cycle of starting over with their health and who felt like factors such as stress, lack of support and lack of nutritional knowledge were barriers to their success in achieving their definition of optimal health. Hollie's work is served by a strong foundation in the Mind-Body connection, and how this connection is critical to success in optimal and functional health. Hollie is a mother of 3 and when she isn't empowering women to finally achieve their Wellness Vision, she is sewing, hiking and creating healthy low-sugar treats. We need to nourish our minds through mindset practices, which we talk about all the time, but in addition, we need to nourish our bodies through nutrition and movement. Studies are being done on the gut-brain connection but it is still a relatively unknown topic. Even scientists and researchers do not fully understand the connection between them, but they have established that there is a very strong, scientific connection between our brains and our thought processes and what happens in the gut and vice versa. Today, Hollie is going to go over what is known about the gut-brain connection. How can we improve our gut health? What do we do that's damaging our gut health? And what can looking after our gut do for our mind? Find out on today's episode! As always, don't forget to find us on our website and join our Facebook group. Did you know that the seeds of 'Brave New World' were coming through in the authors head at least a decade before it was published? 'Crome Yellow' by Aldous Huxley is a satirical novel poking fun of the English 'gentry' and their associates. It is set in Crome Manor in the green heart of England and is told from a 3rd person omniscient narrator. The book is silly in its presentation of the eccentric characters but ironically contains some deep themes despite the comical façade.I summarised the book as follows. "There is absolutely no plot to speak of so the book relies on its wonderful characters to act as the driving force. They are totally outlandish but also entirely believable at the same time. It's mildly thought provoking in places but is definitely a light short read. This week we brought two experienced Chicago improvisers onto the podcast to talk about how to build believable, interesting and dynamic characters using improvisation. We talk about how to create a character right at home, and then we also made a "fake" comic book and thought about how each character could interact and have a relationship with other characters. We hope this information might become useful to some of our listeners! Thanks for listening! Please remember to subscribe for more episodes!
Filmmaker and producer Emma Crome specialises in adventure and documentary film production. Following an unexpected insight into the decline of Britain's wild spaces, Emma embarked on a long-term documentary project exploring the contemporary and precarious state of nature in the UK. Along the way she discovered the story of the father and son subjects of John MacDonald's book ‘The Last English Poachers', and set about tracking them down. In this episode we hear their tale, and that of Britain's shrinking pockets of wilderness.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. Season Four of British Society for Phenomenology Podcast concludes with one of the keynotes from our 2019 Annual Conference. Keith Crome is Principal Lecturer in Philosophy, and Education Lead for the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy, Manchester Metropolitan University; as well as the BSP Impact Director. ABSTRACT: While schooling is a serious business, and education requires discipline, we are often told by educationalists, and also by our students, to make learning fun. There is an obvious extrinsic justification for doing this. As John Dewey noted a century ago in Democracy and Education (1916), experience has shown that allowing pupils to play makes going to school a joy — or at least provides relief from the tedium and strain of regular school work — and management less of a burden. Nevertheless, the link between education and play, familiar to us all (who hasn’t learnt by playing?), is fundamental. The aim of this talk is to explore this connection and its implications for a radical conception of education. I will begin with the contention that the originary co-belonging of play and education has been obscured by the rise of homo faber and the animal laborans, and the attendant overpowering of homo ludens. I will argue that a failure to recognise this vitiates Dewey’s celebrated pragmatist account of education. I will attempt to suggest that it is possible to think beyond the horizon of Dewey’s work by following Eugen Fink in conceiving the phenomenon of play as a mode of activity irreducible to either praxis and poiesis. Such a conception permits us to return to and rethink the originary correspondence between education and play as it was recognised by the Ancient Greeks. BIO: Dr Keith Crome is Principal Lecturer in Philosophy and Education Lead for the Department of History, Politics and Philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University. He served as President of the British Society for Phenomenology from 2014 - 2018, and is currently a member of the editorial collective of the Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology and Impact Director for the society. He has published widely on 20th century French Philosophy and he is the author of Lyotard and Greek Thought (Palgrave, 2004) and co-editor of The Lyotard Reader and Guide (Edinburgh University Press, 2006). His current research focuses on the history of character. He is working with the Cooperative College on a project examining the role that character plays in ideas and practices of cooperation. This time we turn to Ancient Philosophy, and I discuss Plato with Dr Keith Crome. We speak about the pedagogical dimension of Plato's work, and focus specifically on Plato's Republic. Keith argues that to understand Plato, it is essential to understand Plato's account of education and how it relates to Socrates, the Sophists, the myth of the cave, the theory of forms, democratic politics as well as Plato's lesser known more playful side. Keith Crome is scholar of ancient philosophy, postmodernism and education. He is a philosophy lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan Univeristy. He is a specialist in the 20th Century thinker Jean Francois Lyotard, and has composed a monograph on this topic entitled Lyotard and the Greeks. You can find out more about Keith here.

Ever wondered what it's like to transition from academia to private industry? Dr Erica Crome has done just that. She shares her journey and lessons learned with us at Stories in Public Health!
My guest this week is Andy Crome, Senior Lecturer in Early Modern History at Manchester Metropolitan University. We learn that Andy grew up in St. Andrews and studied Theology and Ancient History at Lampeter. We talk about dialects, accents and early memories, including about the history of Lampeter and the people who embodied the place and gave it a sense of continuity. We find out about Andy’s work in early modern history and fandom and how it relates to ‘Dr. Who’, and the cross overs between these areas, as when Andy talks about 'Dr. Who' episodes set in early modern history. I ask Andy whether he would fancy being a consultant for 'Dr. Who', and whether there should be a 'Dr. Who' musical, and we talk about the mystique of the lost episodes. Andy mentions the Starbucks appearance in ‘Game of Thrones’, and the potential for something to go wrong during live theatre performances. Andy recalls his musical passions, including going to see Bon Jovi in concert. He talks about Manchester being a great city for live music and we discuss what the artists think about what academics are saying about them. For instance, Andy refers to the time when Mark E. Smith didn’t think there was value in what was being written about the music of The Fall. We find out how Andy entered academia and the guilt he feels around getting jobs that other academics haven’t been successful in obtaining. We discuss what being an academic is about and the need to do several different things well. Andy discusses how not all of his memories are positive and he reflects on the sadness in nostalgia around people that we have lost. In terms of whether we can be nostalgic about negative experiences, Andy talks about the desire in apocalyptic groups for martyrdom, as well as about the fear of endings and how the history of apocalypticism is about people who have been wrong in their predictions. Then, in the final part of the interview, we learn what Andy wanted to be as a teenager and whether he’d be surprised to learn what he is doing now, which includes research on ‘My Little Pony’ fandom, as well as about how things once dismissed as geeky and embarrassing are now considered very much a normal part of popular culture. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Andy Crome and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

The garden represents different states of a seizure. The pre-seizure area of the garden is calm and sedate with mainly green and white planting, including Acanthus mollis, used so often in Morris designs, and Valeriana officinalis, which was one of the first epilepsy drugs. An oak bench, tiled path and foreground garden are interrupted by dramatic, harsh and brown planting that represents a seizure. Beyond is the more vivid planting associated here with the possible heightening of the senses post seizure. Here orange spires of Eremurus, blue Aquilegia and white peonies flourish.
