276 Finding Your Niche Living in an age that is so polarized it is more important than ever to care for the communities we are a part of. Like the squirrel that stores a nut that sprouts into a sapling, it's up to us and our agency to make a change not just for our community but for ourselves as well, because even a small change is still a change and all niches in our environment need to be filled. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Hauson Le discuss how the division within our communities can be changed through our actions and by maintaining a hopeful impact, despite how frightening and anxiety-inducing challenging such adversity can be. Highlights Doing what you want even if you face adversity. Trying something new and unknown can sometimes lead to the best paths. Just focus on being happy and on what matters to you. Quotes “My mom raised me always saying “Just focus on being happy, it's not about the money. Just be happy, that is all I want for you, I'm proud of you if you're happy.” and you know you can get into a bunch of psychology and that, but I just focused on fulfillment. That was the first thing I did. For me a career is all about fulfillment, and how do I be fulfillment throughout this journey.” “We need to be able to imagine alternative outcomes and futures that can happen even when everything looks dark, even when everything looks bleak.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, What are your predictions for the future now? Are they positive? Is there something you need to change so that they become positive? And what are the two steps you can take tomorrow to change it so that your prediction shifts? And, as always, thank you for listening. About Hauson Community empowerment through expanded agency is the thread that guides and connects Hauson's experiences. He internalized his identity as a servant leader by creating leadership development opportunities for California State University Fullerton's Leadership Scholar Program. His passion for service led him to AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community serving nonprofits that help community leaders align their cultural values, identity, and leadership. As a professional futurist trained at the University of Houston's M.S in Foresight Program, Hauson empowers leaders to embrace change by exploring new possibilities that ignite action today. His desire to expand foresight impact to larger communities created pathways to the world of local government as SGR's Strategic Foresight Manager where he conducts foresight research, facilitates workshops, and speaks on emerging issues and insights. Connect with Hauson on his Instagram, LinkedIn, and Email! Be sure to check out his website Futures Literacy! About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Job Interview Storytelling Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

On this special intensely focused new episode of Light ‘Em Up we drill deep and focus the light of the truth on Asian Hate Crimes and the fear that has gripped the AAPI communities across our nation. On February 27th in only 120 minutes 7 New York Asian women (all members of the AAPI community) were attacked. The FBI defines hate crimes as “criminal offense[s] against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender's bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, ethnicity, gender, or gender identity.”These are not random attacks – they are targeted and intentional.Brutal hate crimes have resulted in the deaths of 4 New Yorkers recently.A 62-year-old grandmother, GuiYing Ma, was brutally attacked with a large rock while sweeping the sidewalk in the Corona neighborhood of Queens, NY in November, 2021. So severely beaten, she laid in a coma from late until dying on February 22, 2022.On January 15, 2022 a homeless man in an unprovoked attack shoved Michelle Alyssa Go, 40, to her death in front of a Times Square subway train. Go was hit by the train and then run over. On February 13, 2022 Christina Yuna Lee, 35, was stabbed 40 times and left to bleed to death on the floor of her apartment bathroom by an attacker who pushed in the door after following her home. The individual arrested for this heinous crime has a lengthy prior criminal history having been arrested 7 times in the past 7 years and suffers from a history of mental illness.Yao Pan Ma, a Chinese immigrant, was beaten to death as he collected cans in East Harlem in April of 2021 – he died of his injuries on New Year's Eve, 2021.On Tuesday March 16, 2021, Robert Long was accused of shooting 8 people to death, 6 of whom were of Asian descent, in Cherokee County and Atlanta, GA.Aggression and hatred towards people of Asian descent is nothing new in the United States. America has a past deeply rooted in fear, hate, and violence. A dark cloud of hatred has cast its shadowy grip over America. If you really want to track the genesis of hatred directed against Asians and Asian-Americans, it can be traced all the way back to the Page Act, in 1875. The Immigration Act of 1882, also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act, provided for the exclusion from the United States of ALL persons from China – which wasn't repealed until 1943 - to the internment of Japanese, many of which were U.S. Citizens from 1942-45.Light ‘Em Up has uncovered that in 16 major cities across the country, anti-Asian hate crimes had more than doubled between 2019 and 2020.After each incident, Asian-American groups and elected officials have come out in force demanding more be done to address violence against members of their community. Will it take more policing or better social programs to seriously address this crisis? An injustice anywhere is an injustice everywhere. We all should be deeply concerned. We'd like to thank our friends at Feedspot, as recently we were honored by being ranked #10 in their most recent poll out of the 40 Best Criminal Justice Podcasts. Studying and living in a beautiful place with friends from all around the world is not something everyone gets to experience. In this episode, Clayton Kramp (‘15) and Alaina Headrick (‘15) reminisce about their time at Cranbrook Schools. They reflect on the arts, the grounds, and the magical experiences they shared with each other and their friends. Hear about what makes the school and its community so special, and how their time there taught them to appreciate life and those around them.About the Guests:Clayton Kramp is a Software Engineer & AAPI ERG Leader at Maxar. His work centers on helping track satellite imagery over Tanzania, checking the rainforest, and he is currently using his technical and programming skills in helping the environment. He recently joined as a leader in the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) community in their company. Clayton received his M.S. in Computer Science and B.S. in Computational and Applied Mathematics from Colorado School of Mines. Alaina Headrick is a Biomedical Engineer at Bio-rad. She's keen on seeking to combine her passion for biology, innovation, and collaboration to promote wellness and serve her community. She's particularly interested in Systems Engineering, focusing on the interfaces between departments and technologies and understanding how to tailor systems and testing protocols to meet product design requirements for the health and wellness industry.Reach Them At:Clayton on LinkedIn and IGJoin Clayton's Class in UdemyAlaina on LinkedIn and IGSelected Quotes:Remembering the Extraordinary Gardens and Learning About NatureAlaina [00:03:08]: I remember walking around the grounds in the first grade. Just being blown away like this little kid on this giant campus, with all the art and everything, and all the flowers. I still love flowers, gardens, and things like that. So I remember the sunken garden by the Cranbrook House. It was just like a magical place to me in my mind at that time… Even the bog garden by the Cranbrook House with all the turtles and frogs. I remember going there with my classes and learning about all different species while looking at those ponds and things like that. It was just, a really cool place to learn about the world, with all this nature, and everything around you. So, that's great. A very good place to be a little kid, too.The English Program at Cranbrook Clayton [00:04:42] The English program at Cranbrook was the most brutal thing I ever experienced. It was so hard and every essay I wrote got destroyed to pieces, and you know, red everywhere. At the time, I was very unappreciative… Retrospectively thinking about it, it was probably everything I needed. In terms of getting up to speed, and really learning how to write good essays and things like that. That was a great way to kick-start and prep myself for everything else.Magical Performances Alaina [00:06:22] We worked so hard, but it was so fun. It was a close-knit group of people. Our concerts felt like a magical experience. You know, we were able to perform in Christ Church, which has incredible acoustics. And Paige Hall and the Cranbrook dining hall, just being able to be in such amazing spaces, creating art that we all really, really worked hard on. I remember we sang this piece, Dark Night of the Soul, and we sang it with the men's choir, the women's choir, and also a smaller chamber orchestra in Christ Church. It was a 45-minute piece. That was my first time ever doing a piece with the orchestra. It was so powerful. I remember people were crying during it, people stood up. It just was incredible to create something like that and do it with such a group of people that I loved, in a beautiful space. That led me to keep doing that kind of stuff. I was in a symphony chorus in college and then still am now.Finding Community at CranbrookClayton [00:09: 53]: So growing up, I spent a year in a school or, maybe as short as three months, or as long as three years. And, I was always the new student in all of these different schools that I went to. It was always difficult to make real, lasting bonds and friendships, in the sense that I was always new. It was difficult to have long-lasting relationships ‘cause I was only there for a few years. Where Cranbrook was different for me was that it was the first school that I spent four years in, which is very long in my experience. And I was not the only new student. All the boarders were completely new to the school. So, we were able to make this new bond altogether, kind of starting fresh.Advice to Current Students: Cherish and Relish Your Time at CranbrookAlaina [00:20:05]: I think just remembering what a masterpiece you're going to every day. You, literally, as a student there, you're going to one of the most renowned art pieces in the world. Being able to separate yourself from all the stress and all the anxiety of getting into college and all the tasks and everything like that. Just sit and be grateful and appreciate this beautiful world that you're in.

There has always been a problem with racism and othering towards the AAPI community here in the United States, but there has been a massive uptick in the number of incidents involving hate crimes and attacks since the beginning of COVID. Many of these individuals being targeted are Americans, born and raised in this country. How did we get to this point of having so much hate towards our brothers and sisters in our communities? And why are people pointing the COVID-finger at them?On this episode of The GoGedders Podcast, Richie is joined by three Milwaukee community members to have a candid conversation about the Anti-Asian movement that has swept the country during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are joined by: Erik Kennedy, a returning GoGedder who is a community leader at Advocate Aurora; Alexa Alfaro, co-founder of Meat on the Street; and Shary Tran, who works for Amazon as the Executive Program Manager Diversity and Inclusion. Erik, Alexa, and Shary are all also members of the AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islanders) Coalition of Wisconsin and have been named among Wisconsin's most influential Asians. Together, we dig into and expose these issues. Listen to the full podcast to find out how you can help be an ally to the AAPI community.

“We don't need to feel guilty for our privilege, but we need to use it to help others." Natalie Carnoy Welcome back to Dive Right In with Jackie and Hannah! This week, we wanted to do a deep dive into the ways in which the pandemic has affected so many aspects of society that often go unnoticed. We start off by talking about the recent Atlanta shooting which targeted the AAPI (Asian American, Pacific Islander) community. The unjust treatment of the AAPI community has directly been correlated to Former President Trump's perpetuation of Xenophobic rhetoric following his proclamation blaming COVID-19 on the Asian community. Seeing how unfair and unjust this is, we wanted to talk about our responsibility as allies to stand up against Xenophobia and work to #EndAsianHate. We also talk about gun control and the importance of speaking up for more understanding, love, and community. Shifting our perspective, we define our terms to gear up for a conversation with Natalie Carnoy on Food Insecurity and how that has become more prevalent during the pandemic. During the discussion with Natalie, we talk about what a Food Desert is and who it disproportionately affects. We look into SNAP and WIC benefits and also learn about what we can do to address the issue. We want to encourage everyone to take a moment to reflect on your situation and educate yourself on ways to help. As always, we hope you enjoy the episode, and stay safe! The month of May is AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) Heritage Month! In celebration of AAPI heritage month, I will be featuring powerful Asian voices in our community throughout this month! First up is ALICE, a Korean American R&B/Pop singer breaking stereotypes in the American music industry. Her goal is to help elevate the portrayal and views of Asians in America by being a powerful and vocal influence in the media. She's been interviewed with Teen Vogue, sang guide vocals for a YG entertainment artist, and won the CCM songwriting competition in South Korea. I first met ALICE in Boston when she was attending Berklee College of Music and she's one of the most confident people I know, but in this episode, she opens up about feeling limited and unwanted in the American music industry for being Asian, being bullied and dealing with racism growing up, and through it all, learning to find confidence and self-worth in who she is, and not on what other people say and think about her. This is a refreshing, powerful episode that would give a lot of inspiration for those with big dreams who want to break stereotypes! EP 21 Do Not Limit Your Dreams to Asian Stereotypes with ALICE QUESTIONS ASKED What was the transition like for you moving from Boston to LA to pursue your dream to be a singer?
