One of the most important parts of being a cybersecurity professional is knowing how to ask the right questions, says CISO Aaron Katz. Aaron started his career as a consultant, and says that's where he honed his question skills. He thinks all aspiring cybersecurity pros should start out with consulting gigs – you learn the business side and what questions to ask, plus get a feel for cybersecurity as a whole, rather than just one tool or product. He and Gene talk about this career path, plus his journey to CISO, why hiring managers are not good at finding cybersecurity candidates, and more.Aaron Katz on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pendraggon87/
In this episode, we speak with Aaron Katz, Co-Founder and CEO of ClickHouse. ClickHouse is an open-source database management system which allows users to generate analytical reports using SQL queries in real-time. Its technology works 100-1000x faster than traditional database management systems, and processes hundreds of millions to over a billion rows and tens of gigabytes of data per server per second. Before founding ClickHouse, Aaron helped grow salesforce.com between 2002 - 2014 from a private, 200 employee startup, to a $200 billion market leader. He was also part of the team that took Elastic public and drove revenue from $5 million to $500 million. I am your host RJ Lumba. We hope you enjoy the show. Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. But sometimes we talk to filmmakers! About filmmakers! Today we talk to up-and-coming writer/director Andrew Adams whose debut feature American Meltdown is making a robust festival run as we speak! He joins us to spearhead our first incarnation of “The First Frame:” a B-Side segment in which we examine the first films of legendary filmmakers. The three pictures we focus on today are My Best Friend's Birthday by Quentin Tarantino, Sour Grapes by Larry David, and Barking Dogs Never Bite by Bong Joon-ho. We discuss our love for these three masters, the seeds of their genius in each of their debuts (as well as each piece's shortcomings), and the strange connection between all three of them. We also dive into the burgeoning “No-Budget Era” of indie filmmaking and what it means for the future. There's talk of Jerry Seinfeld's upcoming Pop-Tarts movie Unfrosted, the making of Tarantino's seminal Reservoir Dogs, and the immediate impressiveness of Bong Joon-ho's films. Additional things that come up include the underrated indie noir Cold Weather by Aaron Katz, the great debut book from George Orwell, Down and Out in Paris and London, and how Craig Bierko turned down the role of Chandler on Friends. We've been using it since 2019 in a single server setup with billions of rows. No problems at all. And query speeds that seem unreal compared to MySQL and pg.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=26316401 Also wanted to share my overall positive experience with Clickhouse.UPSIDES* started a 3-node cluster using the official Docker images super quickly* ingested billions of rows super fast* great compression (of course, depends on your data's characteristics)* features like https://clickhouse.tech/docs/en/engines/table-engines/merget... are amazing to see* ODBC support. I initially said "Who uses that??", but we used it to connect PostgreSQL and so we can keep the non-timeseries data in PostgreSQL but still access PostgreSQL tables in Clickhouse (!)* you can go the other way too: read Clickhouse from PostgreSQL (see https://github.com/Percona-Lab/clickhousedb_fdw, although we didn't try this)* PRs welcome, and quickly reviewed. (We improved the ODBC UUID support)* code quality is pretty high.DOWNSIDES* limited JOIN capabilities, which is expected from a timeseries-oriented database like Clickhouse. It's almost impossible to implement JOINs at this kind of scale. The philosophy is "If it won't be fast as scale, we don't support it"* not-quite-standard SQL syntax, but they've been improving it* limited DELETE support, which is also expected from this kind of database, but rarely used in the kinds of environments that CH usually runs in (how often do people delete data from ElasticSearch?)It's really an impressive piece of engineering. Hats off to the Yandex crew.moreI'd like to add an upside which is:Totally great and simple on a single node.I looked at a bunch of analytical databases and had a lot that started with "so here's a basic 10 node cluster". Clickhouse installed and worked instantly with decent but not "big" data with no hassle. A hundred million rows with lots of heavy text blobs and a lot of columns, that kind of thing. Happily dealt with triple nested joins over that, and with billions of entries in arrays on those columns didn't bat an eye.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=29098637 This has been my experience with ClickHouse as well...that is, you can basically close your eyes while writing the schema and still maintain to get extremely impressive performance. That being said, ClickHouse also has a ton of clever levers you can pull to squeeze out better performance and compression which aren't used by default, such as using Delta/DoubleDelta CODECs with LZ4/ZSTD compression, etc. Not to mention, MATERIALIZED VIEWs and/or the relatively newer feature MergeTree Projections[1]
ClickHouse, the lightning-fast open source OLAP database, was initially released in 2016 as an open source project out of Yandex, the Russian search giant. In 2021, Aaron Katz helped form a group to spin it out of Yandex as an independent company, dedicated to the development + commercialization of the open source project. In this conversation with Tristan and Julia, Aaron gets into why he believes open source, independent software companies are the future. And of course, this conversation wouldn't be complete without a riff on the classic "one database to rule all workloads" thread. Ron is a classically trained violinist turned guitar player and singer-songwriter born in Connecticut. At the young age of 10, Ron joined his first orchestra and chamber groups where he got a good foundation by playing Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, and more which have informed his writing style. At 16, Ron started playing acoustic sets at coffee shops and soon formed the band, Material Force. On today's episode, I'm joined by Zain Jan, he's best known as the founder & CEO of Better Earth. We have the opportunity to learn about Zain's journey and how he grew two 8-figure companies by 24. Zain came from an immigrant family, raised outside Boston. His parents both worked significant hours and he barely got to see them. All throughout school, Zain was constantly tested for learning disabilities or behavioral issues. His dislike of public schooling reflected on his poor grades. Zain did end up going to college more so for making connections and not to study. With great self-awareness, Zain realized college wasn't for him and dropped out to pursue business. He was recruited by Aaron Katz to work at Bright Planet Solar and eventually got recruited by Solar City and built the larges sales office at 20. From there, Zain co-founded Better Earth and the rest was history. From his collaborations with filmmakers like Aaron Katz, Alex Ross Perry, Chad Hartigan, and Brett Haley, music composer Keegan DeWitt has offering some of the most varied, melodic, soulful, simple, bold, yet organic film music — it’s impossible to imagine these movies without him. On this episode we talk how he initially got into film music as a writer/filmmaker/actor helping out friends, the similarities of collaboration strategies for both composers and editors, temp scores, and how his best work comes from producers and directors who realize how “significant” a score can change a film. Keegan’s newest score, All the Bright Places, which he called him and director Haley’s best work together, premieres on Netflix this Friday, February 28. Permalink

Cold Weather is a mumblecore crime thriller, if it is indeed possible to conceive of such a thing, which it must be, because Cold Weather is one. Gentle, leisurely, and with a close focus on character relationships and foibles, it's a pleasant and surprisingly engrossing film, more evidence of the reliability of MUBI's curation. Never has a brother-sister amateur detective duo been so laid back. José has issues with the ending, Mike has an issue with the crime story, but neither takes issue with the film's strength: its characters' relationships. Whether between adversarial brother and sister, amicable exes, or newly bonding buddies, these are smartly observed and efficiently rendered, and the film relishes moments such as a familial debate over who gets to drive, and a detour in which a character hopes that taking up pipe smoking will allow him to think like Sherlock Holmes. With the exception of some self-consciously 'art filmy' shot choices, the film is well directed by Aaron Katz, who maintains a precise and agreeably unhurried tone throughout, and earns characterful performances from his cast. José also remarks upon the cinematography, some later scenes shot during dusk capturing Portland's natural light and industrial landscape beautifully. It's the least interesting of the three films we've recently explored on MUBI (the other two being O Fantasma and Border), but this low-key indie is lovely to spend time with, and worth a glance. Recorded on 31st July 2019.

For those that don't know, or remember, Percy Hill were a band out of New Hampshire who met in 1991 at University studying jazz. They would in fact become part of that neo-jamband 2.0 scene of the 90s, and continued to tour through the oughts. They sort of fell out of the scene for a bit, but came back with some appearances in 2016 and have recently recorded at least one new song Great White Shark, which we totally dig. They do have plans to record more and tour a bit. We sat down with three members of Percy Hill recently, Aaron Katz, Yahuba Garcia and Joe Farrell. Our conversation started when I asked what prompted getting back in the studio to record "Great White Shark". You can follow their story at percyhillmusic.com a site which is being renovated. This year's slate of unique films on the festival circuits are works defined by individuals. Some follow how they define themselves to others—romantically or otherwise—while others follow their relationship to work, the state, and to their own being. Performers of dynamic and unique range create compelling faces and bodies to follow through spaces both familiar and alien, traversing time through aesthetic choices. Colin Marshall talks to Aaron Katz, director of such films as Dance Party USA, Quiet City, and the new Cold Weather. Continuing his established tradition of examining the sphere of urban twentysomethings who aren't quite sure how their lives got to this point or where they're going next with a strikingly aestheticizing gaze, Katz incorporates a near-Sherlock Holmesian plot into his latest film. His central characters, a Portland ice-factory worker, his DJ buddy, and his sister, find themselves embroiled in a forbiddingly seedy mystery when a girl goes missing and it falls to them to find her.
Cyrus is the latest film from Jay and Mark Duplass, a is a comedy-drama about a lonely divorcee (John C. Reilly) who finally meets the woman of his dreams (Marisa Tomei), only to discover that she has an over-protective son (Jonah Hill). After breaking through on the US festival scene with low-budget films such as The Puffy Chair (2005) and Baghead (2008), the Duplass Brothers quickly became associated with the term ‘mumblecore’. It was a loose phrase used to describe a certain kind of US indie movie, often focusing on introspective twenty-somethings and shot on tiny budgets using documentary-style techniques. Directors such as Andrew Bujalski, Lynn Shelton, Aaron Katz and Joe Swanberg all had the label applied to their films, which stood out from the increasingly expensive indie scene of the early and mid-2000s. Since then, the genre has arguably been absorbed into the mainstream with Greenberg – the Ben Stiller comedy featuring mumblecore regular Greta Gerwig – and now Cyrus, which sees the Duplass Brothers take their style of filmmaking to the division of a major studio (Fox Searchlight). I recently spoke with Jay Duplass in London about the new film, what the term mumblecore means to him now and the transition from ultra-low budget indies to the studio system.File Download (0:00 min / 7 MB)
