Yoga teacher Jenni Rawlings and Exercise Science professor Travis Pollen are joined by special guest Alec Blenis to discuss what yogis should know about cardio.Alec Blenis is a hybrid athlete, strength and conditioning coach, and science nerd. He holds a B.S. in physics from Georgia Tech and is a former professional obstacle course racer and ultrarunner (he's completed over 50 ultras.) Alec is also the current world record holder in Murph, a CrossFit workout we discuss in the show. What is HIIT (high intensity interval training)? Can yoga be considered a form of cardio? How can we measure our own personal level of cardiovascular fitness?Which is a better predictor of mortality risk: cardiovascular fitness level or strength? How well do cardio activities, strength training, and yoga improve bone density? Is there an optimal dosage of cardiovascular stimulus beyond which it's diminishing returns? Can cardio interfere with strength gains? (a.k.a. the interference effect)Which should you do first (in a single exercise session): strength training or cardio? What about strength training and yoga?Is light cardio a helpful form of recovery after strength training? Is “active recovery” helpful or important? What are good tips for people who practice yoga and strength train to start bringing cardio into their movement repertoire? What's the minimum effective dosage of cardio?…And much more!Resources mentioned in this episode:Follow and learn from Alec on InstagramTrain with Alex in his Sex & Zombies programJenni's email newsletterStrength for Yoga Remote Group Training – ongoing, interactive monthly strength program for yogis designed by Jenni & TravisOnline yoga class library & yoga anatomy workshops with JenniStrength for Yoga email newsletterTo find out more about Travis Pollen: website / InstagramMusic used with generous permission from Dischord A Cappella.Support the show**Become a supporter of the Yoga Meets Movement Science podcast – starting at $3/month!

This week we have Alec Blenis back for round two. If you didn't catch his first episode back in August, it's one of our most popular and definitely worth going back for. Alec has a really unique background ranging from Georgia Tech physics grad to former professional Spartan Racer and competitive ultramarathoner to Murph world record holder. Lately he's becoming a bigger and bigger voice in the fitness social media world with his emphasis on hybrid training, antifragile approach to movement, and willingness to take on big problems in the space. In this conversation we cover a lot of ground. We start with how to ask better questions (Alec is a master of the Instagram Q&A) and then we dive into interference effect, how people misinterpret the concept of progressive overload, and more. You can find Alec on Instragram @alecblenis where he has tons of great content, and he also offers paid programming and coaching. He's also currently running a side bend challenge if you have what it takes to compete!
In this episode we dive into coaching and training strategies for the hybrid athlete. We debunk some myths around the interference effect and provide a framework for how to think about hybrid training. Alec is a brilliant coach and athlete. Lunges are a fundamental movement for strengthening muscles from your waist down. Yet because they appear easier to perform than they actually are, many people do too many too soon and end up discouraged or with lower-back or knee injuries. Alec Blenis, CPT, CSCS, explains why this move is a staple in strength and conditioning programs and how to add lunges into your routine in a safe and beneficial way. On this week's episode of CP Radio, Kyle & Matt are joined by Alec Blenis! Alec is a former endurance athlete & Obstacle Course Racer, having been a part of the Spartan Race Pro Team. As he progressed, he developed an interest in powerlifting and physique training, leading him down the path of hybrid training and his position as a coach with Complete Human Performance. For more on Alec, check him out on Instagram.
Alec Blenis is a lot of things: Georgia Tech physics grad, former professional Spartan Racer and competitive ultramarathoner, current Murph world record holder, Instagram Q&A master, and coach at Complete Human Performance. With a background like that, it makes sense that he specializes in coaching people who also want to do a lot of things. Specifically, he coaches people who are looking to pursue "concurrent training," with goals spanning both strength and endurance simultaneously. The relevance of this for tactical professionals is obvious, so we brought him on to have a conversation about how he approaches this kind of training as both an athlete and a coach.
Hello and welcome to The Progress Theory where we discuss how to implement scientific principles to optimise human performance. In this episode, we have Hybrid coach and athlete Alec Blenis. It's easier to understand programming for strength and endurance sports individually, but hybrid programming is more complex and that's what makes it so exciting. But what are the best hybrid programming recommendations? In this episode, Alec discusses his journey into Hybrid training, his current goals and what he has learnt along the way. We also discuss key themes such as how to dissect your hybrid goals so you know what to programme and how to balance your strength and endurance training But before we get to the show I want to thank our sponsors, who the show would not be possible without. I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to my production partner, KULT Media. KULT Media has been instrumental in the development & success of the progress theory. They have created brand guides, comprehensive podcast strategies, enhanced the podcast production, developed custom workflows for me and edited & mixed all of the video, audio and social media content. Thank you to HMN24 – fuelling human potential and optimising everyday human performance and well-being. First of all – HMN24 is not a sports supplement company. I've seen sport supplements be used as a method to improve performance in the gym and at a certain sport. However, these supplements, like a pre-workout, are often used on top of a lifestyle which does not provide the foundation needed for optimal performance. There's no point taking pre-workout supplements if your sleep, hydration, and nutrition is an unstructured mess. I'm convinced that a large percentage of injuries are often caused, not because training was poor, but because a poor lifestyle foundation increased the athlete's susceptibility to injury. Sports supplements are often used to plaster the cracks in poor lifestyle habits, which only causes more future problems. And this is where HMN24 is different. The product range at HMN24 not only helps improve your foundation; it optimises it. The HMN24 products are designed to fit around your circadian rhythms, from the moment you wake up, to key moments in the day when you need optimal focus, to getting the best sleep at night, there's a product to optimise each phase of the day. I can't recommend enough the “live on form' pack, consisting of the products Rise, flow and pre-sleep. Rise is for the morning and is my absolute favourite. It tastes amazing. Rise contains caffeine for increased morning alertness (though not a huge amount of caffeine, which is sooo much better for avoiding gastro-intestinal distress), electrolytes from coconut and watermelon powder to increase hydration after the previous night's sleep, and B-vitamins, to ensure you ready to win the morning. I'm not a fan of long-winded morning routines. I wake up, have my Rise with ice, and get straight to writing, and I've seen such an improvement in getting into deep work. By the time 2pm comes around the effects of caffeine from Rise has worn off, but I don't want to take more caffeine because that's going to interrupt getting to sleep later on. This is where Flow is perfect. It's a caffeine-free nootropic, perfect for improving alertness and concentration during that mid-afternoon slump. And finally, I take pre-sleep just before bed, which is a comprehensive night-time complex, formulated to help support well-being and fortify the body against the fatigue...
