Welcome to Following Films, the podcast where we go beyond the screen to bring you conversations with some of the most unique voices in cinema today. I'm your host, Chris Maynard.Today, we're diving into Last Breath — the sleeper hit that no one saw coming. Directed by Alex Parkinson, this gripping thriller tells the true story of a commercial diver who becomes trapped 100 meters below the surface of the North Sea with only five minutes of oxygen — and no chance of immediate rescue. It's a harrowing, edge-of-your-seat survival story that's as emotional as it is intense. With masterful direction, stunning underwater cinematography, and a narrative that keeps you hooked from start to finish, Last Breath quickly built momentum through word of mouth and has become one of the most talked-about films of the year.I had the chance to sit down with Alex to talk about how he brought this incredible true story to life, the technical challenges of filming under extreme conditions, and what it was like turning real-life events into cinematic suspense.Stick around — this is a conversation you won't want to miss.
This week on BEHIND THE LENS we're going from the Old West down into the deep blue, or not so blue, sea, discussing two wonderful films with two terrific filmmakers – LAST BREATH and GUNSLINGERS. First up, take a listen to my exclusive interview with director ALEX PARKINSON talking about LAST BREATH. Currently in theatres, LAST BREATH is a heart-pounding film that follows seasoned deep-sea divers as they battle the raging elements to rescue their crewmate trapped hundreds of feet below the ocean's surface. Based on a true story of events that occurred in 2012, as well as Alex's 2019 documentary on the incident, LAST BREATH is an electrifying story about teamwork, resilience, and a race against time to do the impossible. Then it's time to hear from writer, director, and editor BRIAN SKIBA talking about his new film, the rootin' tootin' western GUNSLINGERS. Talk about a fun film! Action packed, lots of shootouts, a hanging, a solid story with amazing cast, cinematic in scope thanks to widescreen scenes, and it's got Nicolas "Fucking" Cage(!!!!!) in another one of his unique, show stopping, and indelible roles. I always enjoy speaking with Brian, especially when it comes to westerns and he has outdone himself with GUNSLINGERS. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Season 23! Episode 251! Long-time listeners: thanks for sticking with us. New listeners: welcome! We've got a lot to offer you. This episode is about “Last Breath”, the based-on-a-true-story film currently in theaters. My guest is Alex Parkinson, who directed both the feature film and the documentary which inspired the movie. First-time director stories! Check. Exploring the transition from documentary to film! Check. Is Woody Harrelson's performance a realistic take on the person he's portraying? Well, maybe we don't tackle that last question. But we're serving up an entertaining discussion, nonetheless. If you've read this far, you probably don't need additional help finding the episode, but tell your friends! Thank you, from Below the Line.

The Last Breath is based on the unbelievable true story of a diving accident. Kenny speaks with movie Director Alex Parkinson and Producer David Brooks to better understand the thought process behind the movie. Both Guests are co-writers of the 2025 movie, and give an inside look at some of the behind-the-scenes challenges and obstacles. Spoiler Alert: This is an early review and discussion of plot points and questions about the Last Breath. If you haven't seen the movie yet, I'd definitely recommend it!Our interview discusses how actors Fin Cole, Simu Liu and Woody Harrelson were able to capture the true emotion of being trapped in a dangerous rescue mission deep underwater. This movie has a realistic, visceral feel to it. Aside from a little (visually stunning) creative license, it follows the real story of Chris Lemons, the commercial saturation diver who got stranded in a heavy dive suit on the seafloor of the North Sea. If that wasn't enough, it was during a storm, and at night. We got to discuss the set pieces, where it was filmed, and the challenges the producer and directors faced, and ultimately overcame. They also discussed how much scuba training the actors had to undergo, the screening process, and how they handled being underwater during filming. Finally, we discuss the ending, the theories on how he was able to survive, and the strength to get back out there and dive. It's a movie about human survival, the life of a commercial deep saturation diver, and the drive to return to work after going through such a harrowing life-or-death situation.Finn Cole stars as Chris Lemons, Woody Harrelson as Duncan Allock, and Simon Liu as Dave Yuasa.Directed by Alex Parkinson (co-writer)Produced by David Brooks (co-writer)https://www.focusfeatures.com/last-breath/—Kenny Dyal is the host of The Scuba Diving Podcast:TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@kenny_dyalInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/sweetwater_scubaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/realkennydyalLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/kennydyalX: https://twitter.com/RealKennyDyalwww.sweetwaterscuba.com
