Říkáme si: když ještě trochu přidám, zvládnu to. Pracujeme více a spíme méně, v kanceláři problémy řešíme a doma neustále nějaké vytváříme, chodíme na čím dál více schůzek a chybíme u čím dál více rodinných večeří a posezení s přáteli. Skončíme s nevyužitým potenciálem, nižším příjmem a dalšími ztrátami. Stres a šílená pracovní doba nám už nedrtí zdraví ani osobní život, nesplněné profesní sny a ambice nám ale mohou úplně stejně zdrtit duši. Existuje ještě nějaké jiné řešení? Je možné mít čas na kariéru, vztahy, a dokonce i sami na sebe? Možné to je a přesně o tom je tato kniha: jak vyhrát v práci a zároveň uspět v osobním životě. Řekli o knize: „Výjimečná kniha plná inspirace i praktických rad. Zkušenosti, o které se s námi Michael s Megan dělí, získali během mnoha let práce jako jedni z nejvyhledávanějších profesionálních koučů v Americe. Dvojitou výhru vřele doporučuji!“ — CHRIS McCHESNEY, autor bestsellerů, výkonný ředitel společnosti FranklinCovey „Dosáhnout úspěchu neznamená obětovat osobní život a naplněný osobní život není podmíněný obětováním úspěchu. Váš pracovní tým i rodina vám tisíckrát poděkují.“ — EMILY BALCETIS, autorka knihy Clearer, Closer, Better, docentka psychologie působící na univerzitě NYU „Michael Hyatt a Megan Hyatt Miller vynalezli systém transformace vlastní výkonnosti i vztahů. Srdce muže „Dvojitá výhra je čtení, které vám změní život.“ — PATRICK LENCIONI, výkonný ředitel a zakladatel The Table Group, autor bestsellerů 5 příčin selhávání týmů a Výhoda Autor: Megan Hyatt Miller, Michael Hyatt Typ knihy: audiokniha, e-kniha, tištěná kniha Překlad: Anna Petráková Vazba: pevná vazba Délka audioknihy: 4:58 h Počet stránek knihy: 208 Původní název: Win at Work and Succeed at Life Audioknihu Nadčasový produkt si můžete koupit v nejlepším obchodě s audioknihami Audiolibrix. Why leaders need to rethink resilience We chat with Bruce Daisley, author of Fortitude, workplace culture expert, and podcaster We're thrilled to open season 7 with a brilliant conversation with Bruce Daisley. Many of you will know Bruce as the author of Fortitude: The Myth of Resilience and the Secrets of Inner Strength (out now in paperback) and his previous book The Joy of Work. Bruce is a workplace culture expert and the host of the legendary podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat. In Fortitude Bruce challenges the myths we've all heard about resilience, and asks if they're really achieving their desired effect. Organisations invest time and money in resilience training. Schools aim to increase children's resilience. Yet the data shows that these interventions aren't always successful. Why is resilience seen as an individual, rather than a collective responsibility? How can leaders really help their teams develop inner strength? Are we doing it right? In this episode, Bruce explains why we need to flip the concept of resilience on its head and focus on the power of building communities in and outside the workplace. Fortitude is an especially timely read as he also discusses the impact of trauma and how we can help the people around us heal. This is a vital leadership skill given the events of the last 3 years. A huge thank you to Bruce for sharing his insights into what leaders need to do differently. Twitter has been hitting the headlines over the past week following Elon Musk's purchase of the social media giant for $44 Billion. The world's richest man closed his blockbuster purchase of the social media service, propelling Twitter into a new era. While fans of Musk, a self-described "free speech absolutist", look forward to a future of more expansive dialogue, critics suggest that Musk wants to open the platform up to all - including controversial personalities such as Former President Trump and Kayne West. They also question the impact of Musk's new content moderation council. Musk's team wasted no time terminating the employment of some of the most senior figures at Twitter. Other employees have shared their concerns about what lies ahead and how Twitter's focus and company culture could change; creating a work environment similar to Tesla. Over the weekend, The New York Times reported that Mr Musk had approved big job cuts across Twitter's workforce. The newspaper said the cuts would take place before workers were due to receive grants of shares in the company as part of their pay deals. This has been denied by Elon Musk and his team. One former Twitter leader has been particularly active in the media over the past few days. Bruce Daisley, former VP at Twitter and author of Eat Sleep Work Repeat: 30 Hacks For Bringing Joy To Your Job has appeared on the Times Radio, Channel 4 News and LBC to offer his take on the purchase of Twitter and what it could mean for Twitter employees. A key figure at Twitter between 2012 and 2020, Bruce was Twitter's most senior employee outside of the United States, in his role of Vice President across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. He joined the company in 2012 having previously led YouTube UK.Earlier this month, Bill Banham sat down with Bruce to record an episode of the HRchat podcast. Among other topics, Bruce shared his thoughts on the implications of social media platforms getting too influential and what can happen if they go unchecked. Questions For Bruce Include:What are some of the factors you believe define a company's culture?Does hybrid work dilute a company's culture?"The growing demand that "we need some resilience training" has led to a surge in the number of wellbeing organisations offering it. But as I spent two years writing a book on resilience, I was struck by the number of times people told me that the resilience course they were sent on did nothing for them." How and why can resilience training fail?Tell us why you wrote your latest book, Fortitude: Unpicking the Myth of Resilience (August 2022).How can employees achieve a sense of control through simple mind exe

The secrets of better workplace cultures - simple everyday practices to improve how we all work together, which will lead to greater team and individual happiness and performance. In episode two of Better@Work, we welcome Bruce Daisley as our second guest for a super informative and wide-ranging chat. I am a big big fan of Bruce, and his podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat. Bruce is a best-selling author who spent 12 years running Twitter in Europe and was at YouTube before that. Bruce is a respected thought leader on what makes works good and what makes work matter, and his book The Joy of Work has been bible for me. I chat with Bruce about how to keep our audiences engaged with crafting presentations that are attention grabbing, fresh, new, and current and realising that no-one cares anywhere as much of you, and how bringing entertainment to an audience is a must!!! Bruce and I unpack his fascination with what makes work good, touching on anti-work movement sub-cultures. Bruce shares the secrets of good workplace culture and how making many small shifts creates a momentum of change. He cautions not to presume that just because you can understand it, you can do it. And brings to life how he and his teams tackled burnout culture and weekend emails habits. We laugh about the common act of ego when we know the science of the diminishing returns of long work hours, but delude ourselves that those rules don't apply to us We marvel at how only 13% of Australian workers are engaged with their jobs, while the US is at 30% and for French workers it's only 3%! We then discuss the biggest determinant of being engaged at work is whether or not you have a friend at work, and how stress levels are lower in workplaces where a shared identity and a sense of belonging are strong. We cover research by Wharton's Sigal Barsade, demonstrating “companionate love” in the workplace is vital to employee morale, teamwork and customer satisfaction, and is proven to make work better and also drive better results. Bruce makes a best book recommendation, The Good Jobs Strategy by Zeynep Ton. We laugh about the “Mill owner” trap we can fall into and the illusion that high productivity correlates to big hours, when focus on outputs is what really matters. We also cover Bruce's Framework: Recharge I Sync I Buzz We wrap up on the power of humour to create togetherness, bonding and collective safety, “Crisp Thursday”, the Jewish concept of Simcha or Shared Joy. Also, that resilience is a toxic myth, Bruce's new book Fortitude, Unlocking the Secrets of Inner Strength and Bruce's best ever career advice on how not to overdo it. Can't Even can be ordered nowAHP's original article in BuzzfeedAHP's newsletter is hereLast year Anne Helen Petersen’s Buzzfeed article about burnout became a viral sensation, spawning a seemingly never-ending wave of ‘Year of Burnout’ headlines. Petersen’s writing triggered such recognition because she rooted it in the ordinary, in everyday experiences that were instantly relatable. She evoked her own life where industrious professional productivity (as a writer) was combined with a weary inability to get things done in her private life. She initially thought there was something wrong with her. Googling for other people relating their aversion to getting sh!t done domestically, bills sitting unpaid, registrations unfiled, postal votes uncast, chores uncompleted. She realised it wasn’t personal, it was systematic. The way we were living was driving us to a constant feeling of being emotionally & physically spent.Relatedly, it was sad to read of the passing of David Graeber this week. As an academic he was an unexpected icon of progressive politics but more than anything he was someone who invited us to revisit our preconceived ideas about how society functioned. Graeber had mused in his book ‘Bullshit Jobs’, wondering what had happened to the 15-hour week that in 1930 John Maynard Keynes had predicted by the end of the 20th century. He wondered whether it was indeed possible but societally we might have to reorganise the world of work to achieve it. Insurgent thinking for many, but there are echoes of this conjecture in Petersen’s book. Some of her thoughts might find resonance with frazzled younger workers wondering why they won’t be free of their student loans until 2045 and looking at house prices simmering away at 10 times their salary.AHP reminds us that despite a whole genre of self-improvement literature that tells us that our personal actions can resolve burnout - or that, come on slouch, you need to be grittier, we need to point the finger at the actions of our firms, not ourselves. Ultimately she suggests that our casual acceptance of the way we’re working is having a toll on our psyche that can’t be easily unspun by productivity hacks and meditation apps. As Taylor Lorenz notes on the jacket, the book “is a compelling exploration of… how an entire generation has been set up to fail”.Sign up for the Eat Sleep Work Repeat newsletter here. How does a lunch break spark a burst of productivity? Can a team’s performance be improved simply by moving the location of the coffee maker? Why are meetings so often a waste of time, and how can a walking meeting actually get decisions made? As an executive with decades of management experience at top Silicon Valley companies including YouTube, Google, and Twitter, Bruce Daisley has given a lot of thought to what makes a workforce productive and what factors can improve the workplace to benefit a company’s employees, customers, and bottom line. In his debut book, he shares what he’s discovered, offering practical, often counterintuitive, insights and solutions for reinvigorating work to give us more meaning, productivity, and joy at the office. A Gallup survey of global workers revealed shocking news: only 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs. This means that burn out and unhappiness at work are a reality for the vast majority of workers. Managers—and employees themselves—can make work better. Eat Sleep Work Repeat shows them how, offering more than two dozen research-backed, user-friendly strategies, including: Go to Lunch (it makes you less tired over the weekend) Suggest a Tea Break (it increases team cohesiveness and productivity) Conduct a Pre-Mortem (foreseeing possible issues can prevent problems and creates a spirit of curiosity) Bio: Bruce Daisley is host of top business podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat; was Twitter’s most senior employee outside of the US in his role of vice president across Europe, Middle East, and Africa; and before that he ran YouTube UK at Google. We continue our run of legendary authors with Twitter’s former head of Europe Operations, Bruce Daisley. He’s got a new book out called Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat, He’s also got a great podcast of the same name! This conversation is fun as we talk about some of his “30 hacks” for more joy at work. Expect a lot of laughter, conversations about digital relationships, walking meetings, Chinese Sci-Fi and a lot more. Also, pay close attention to our discussion about why you should turn off notifications on your phone! London To California The conversation with a lot of laughter from the two. They touched on topics such as living in London, how Europeans adjust when they visit the US and the culinary fusion of European dishes. You might also relate to the two who kept on adding movies in their “to watch list” but have never even started watching any on the list. Bruce also shared how he loved buying books, but never actually find time reading them. This is also the inspiration why he wrote the book Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat. Twitter EU Bruce shares when he joined Twitter, he never expected he would face a great challenge. Initially, Twitter was rated as one of the best places to work for. Bruce also shared how he loved buying books, but never actually find time reading them. This is also the inspiration why he wrote the book Eat, Sleep, Work, Repeat. Bruce Daisley has spent his career working in media and technology companies, like YouTube, Google and Emap. His last venture in corporate leadership was as VP EMEA (translated: King of Europe). Along the way he became obsessed with making our jobs better, and how often we get it wrong. Eat Sleep Work Repeat (called The Joy of Work in the UK) is his attempt to escape the bad opinions that leaders bring to work culture – and to replace them with evidence and facts thus creating a more humane workplace. Twitter’s ex head of EMEA, Bruce Daisley, joins Alberto Lidji to discuss succinct messaging on climate crisis; workplace culture; and insights from the ‘Joy of Work’ & ‘Eat Sleep Work Repeat’. A spontaneous conversation full of energy and insight. We start by hearing how Bruce has recently left Twitter to explore a future that is quite the opposite of highly prescriptive. His passion for the environment shines through early on. We hear how he was involved with Greenpeace at the age of 15 and how tackling the climate crisis is a key focus for him as he explores how best to leverage his skills post-Twitter. We also gain insight into his 8 years at Twitter, growing operations in Europe from zero to £500m. His three focus areas were: (1) the reputation of Twitter; (2) growing the audience; and (3) ensuring growth in advertising revenue. If you get the first two right, the third naturally follows. Messaging is key and Bruce’s skills on this front are well honed. He notes that there is a need for more clarity in the message being projected by those seeking to tackle the climate crisis. It is important to tell the story in a more succinct way. Bruce is unequivocal that social media has given a voice to the voiceless and that it is a force for good. On the question of what makes content go 'viral', he notes that on twitter it is generally because someone is highlighting something that isn’t about them but, rather, is more about the wider world. It was during Bruce’s time at Twitter, that he launched his podcast: Eat Sleep Work Repeat, which subsequently yielded a book by the same name in the US – in the UK market the book is called the Joy of Work. He explores what is it that makes some companies attractive places to work in and others less so. There’s an old truism when it comes to management: manage people in the way that you’d like to be managed. However, the sad truth is that a lot of people forget that. On the topic of excessive use of emails: yes, it can be very frustrating. Likewise, too many meetings, open plan office settings, 200 daily emails and more can lead to overload. However, there is much value in face-to-face human interaction between team members; working remotely isn't the panacea many would expect. We hear some interesting research and anecdotes on this. Bruce’s key takeaway: small acts of kindness matter. He strongly believes that if you can make someone’s life happier and better at school, at work, or wherever you might be, then that transforms one person’s life and it can be incredibly powerful. Bruce Daisley, author and podcaster, stops by to talk about his upcoming book Eat Sleep Work Repeat. While serving as a senior executive at Twitter and Google, Daisley became fascinated with how we create happiness at work. He noticed there was a lot of science around it, but that the research wasn't making its way down to the people who commuted into offices each and every day. So he left the corporate world and started his podcast (which later inspired the book) as a way to help workers discover the ingredients that go into building a happy, fulfilling work environment.
75% of Americans say the worst aspect of their job is their boss. In fact, Daniel Kahneman found that interacting with a boss was the second least favorite activity of our day (just ahead of commuting!). In this episode, Bruce Daisley talks through the key traits good bosses share and the bad habits bosses need to shake. Bruce Daisley was Twitter's European Vice President until he quit in early 2020 because he wanted to join the fight against climate change. He shares his amazing life story which took him from a Birmingham council house to the pinnacle of social media, and reflects both on his best-selling book "The Joy Of Work" and successful podcast "Eat Sleep Work Repeat." There's also the crucial question of "what next..."?
Only 8% of us in the UK feel engaged by our jobs and the majority of us say we’re say we feel burned out in our roles. The modern workplace is actually less productive and more stressful than before. So what’s the solution? In this episode best selling author and podcast award winner Bruce Daisley talks through the optimal amount of hours to work per week, the science behind taking a lunch break and the differences between a productive and unproductive office. Bruce Daisley is a former Twitter VP and bestselling author of the forthcoming book, Eat Sleep Work Repeat: 30 Hacks for Bringing Joy to Your Job, which comes out February 25th. Bruce also has experience working for Google and YouTube. There are some statistics that show that only 13% of employees are engaged in their jobs. Why is that? Bruce says it is because, “If you have a look at status, higher power is dis-inhibiting. What I mean by that is if you watch people who are bosses, people who are presidents, people who are high status individuals, they generally are unencumbered by this sort of self-consciousness that the rest of us fail. And the correlate of that, the flip side of that is that lack of status is inhibiting, meaning that when we have no position in the hierarchy, when we are junior, when our opinions are told that they don't matter, it means that we repress how we feel. And you observe this more and more, countries that have strong hierarchy generally find that their workers are less engaged, because when they've got less input into decisions, when they've got less contribution to make, they generally think, "I can't get anything done here." So they're gonna repress their emotions. And so you observe this, one of the most hierarchical countries in the world is France, and worker engagement is one of the lowest, 3% of French workers describe themselves as job. I mean, it's a number so low that it makes you go back and check the methodology. But it's the same methodology they use around the world, and yeah workplace engagement is really low, we feel like we're bowing to our bosses.” So how do we fix the problem? When it comes to fixing workplace culture there is the big picture, which means changing the policies the company has in place such as flexible working arrangements. But there is also the little picture--simple changes that individuals can make to improve day to day work. Bruce gave some examples of some of the simpler things that we can implement right away to make work better. One thing is walking meetings, where instead of sitting down in a one on one meeting people can take a walk around the building inside or outside while meeting. This can break up the routine, allow people to get up and move around, and it may even produce more creative ideas. Another example he talked about was moving the coffee machine or the water cooler because of the research that shows face-to-face conversation empowers workplace productivity. If there are teams who don’t normally interact moving the coffee or water can spark those conversations to start. “I think the reason why the book has ended up being the best selling business book of the year in the UK, is because these changes are so simple, that anyone can stage their own intervention. They can say, Actually, we could do two of these things next week.” What you will learn: What it's like to work at Twitter Why are so many people not happy with their jobs Who is responsible for your happiness at work? Simple things that can be implemented to improve productivity and happiness What happens if your managers just shut all your ideas down? In this episode Bruce shares his insights and tips into how we can all fall in love with our job again. What I particularly like about Bruce's approach is that he wants to empower individuals within organisations to take action rather than wait for their employers to tell them how they are going to make their working life better. Talking to Bruce was fascinating and he shares important lessons on how to enjoy our work more, whether we are employed or work for ourselves.
In this Episode I speak to Bruce Daisley, the Head of Twitter in Europe, Middle East and Africa about work place happiness and culture. Work Place Happiness and culture is super interesting to me and I've spent a lot of time trying to understand the space. The most exciting resource to learn about this in my view is a podcast called Eat Sleep Work Repeat. Its run by the Head of Twitter in Europe, Bruce Daisley. Bruce has worked for years at epic culture companies, Google, YouTube and Twitter which has given him great experience in this space. Bruce has also been fortunate enough to interview people behind cultures at companies like Innocent Smoothies, Netflix, Twitter as well as authors like Dan Pink and nurosicentists, doctors etc. I think his experience and these interviews have given Bruce an unmatched practical view of what works in this space and so I'm delighted to be kicking off this podcast with this video. Thanks so much for taking the time. I thought it a really good place to start would be to get a little bit of your background, and what your current role is, and how you came to be in your current role. Yeah, so let's start from today, so I work at Twitter now; I’ve worked at Twitter for the last six years. I run Europe Middle East and Africa for Twitter. Prior to that, I worked for Google, so I worked really helping to build the YouTube business from scratch cross the UK and so I’ve probably spent the last 10 years in those two tech firms. Before that, I worked in various different jobs, largely in digital but across traditional publishers and traditional radio companies, so I guess from where I am today, I've spent quite a while in digital but the last 10 years specifically, just in pure-play digital. BizcommunityAwesome. One of the things which I picked up over the last year is your amazing podcast – I’m not just saying that, it really is quite something. I'm in the process of building a business, and one of the things which is so clear to me as how getting your culture right has so much impact. So, for those who don't know, Eat, Sleep Work Repeat is definitely worth checking out. Do you want to tell me how you came to start that podcast and what your combination of interests is? So obviously, you have a bit of a radio background, and working and such ‘amazing culture’ businesses, but I'd love to hear your journey to start. The interesting thing for me, the way I got into it, was that I was always complimented, whether it was by my teammate YouTube or by the team here at Twitter. People always come to me and say ‘Wow, there’s such a good buzz to these teams, such good energy’. And so, that led me to make the mistake of thinking that I was an expert. I think it's fair to say, and I say this quite often, but I don't think there's any easy jobs anymore, so I don't think there are any jobs where people go to work and they think ‘Wow, that was that was a breeze,’ and then they go home at the end of the day with no stresses or anxieties. But about a year-and-a-half ago, I found myself in this situation where I was thinking, ‘People around me don't seem to be as happy as they used to be,’ and I actually challenged myself and thought, ‘You’ve told yourself you're good at culture, but you don't know what you're doing!’ So I found myself looking for a book on it and searching Amazon for a book on work culture, and I couldn't find anything that seemed suitable. So it was a big logistical jump, but from there, I decided to do a podcast on it and I think specifically, I’ll give you an example: I spent the last week thinking a lot about the research about creativity, and the interesting thing is that if you look into the research on creativity, there’s a lot of evidence for what situations provoke creativity. There’s some wonderful work by a lot of very prominent female researchers, like Alice Isen, Teresa Amabile, and Barbara Fredrickson.
Bruce runs Twitter for the whole of Europe, the Middle East and Asia, as well as hosting the iTunes chart-topping podcast Eat Sleep Work Repeat. Lauren interviews Bruce on what he’s learned in his time heading up Twitter, before that at YouTube and the academic proof he’s come across about what really boosts productivity, and he shares his thoughts on the new rules of work.

It was an honour to speak to Bruce Daisley, Head of Twitter in Europe and podcast host of ‘Eat Sleep Work Repeat’. Not only did he give me hints and tips on podcasting but he revealed that he doesn’t have a master plan and thinks that most of the discussions around ‘success’ are not for him. He started interviewing me at some point and we reflected a lot on habits, work culture and how hard work, persistency and reasoning always pays off. As my first face to face podcast, you will notice a lot more interaction and a lot more fun! Feel free to reach out to Bruce (I recommend subscribing to his podcast) on LinkedIn, but give him a reason to connect. @brucedaisley
