This post is part of a sequence on LLM psychology TL;DR We introduce our perspective on a top-down approach for exploring the cognition of LLMs by studying their behavior, which we refer to as LLM psychology. In this post we take the mental stance of treating LLMs as "alien minds," comparing and contrasting their study with the study of animal cognition. We do this both to learn from past researchers who attempted to understand non-human cognition, as well as to highlight how much the study of LLMs is radically different from the study of biological intelligences. Specifically, we advocate for a symbiotic relationship between field work and experimental psychology, as well as cautioning implicit anthropomorphism in experiment design. The goal is to build models of LLM cognition which help us to both better explain their behavior, as well as to become less confused about how they relate to risks from advanced AI. Introduction When we endeavor to predict and understand the behaviors of Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT4, we might presume that this requires breaking open the black box, and forming a reductive explanation of their internal mechanics. This kind of research is typified by approaches like mechanistic interpretability, which tries to directly understand how neural networks work by breaking open the black box and taking a look inside. While mechanistic interpretability offers insightful bottom-up analyses of LLMs, we're still lacking a more holistic top-down approach to studying LLM cognition. If interpretability is analogous to the "neuroscience of AI," aiming to understand the mechanics of artificial minds by understanding their internals, this post tries to approach the study of AI from a psychological stance.[1] What we are calling LLM psychology is an alternate, top-down approach which involves forming abstract models of LLM cognition by examining their behaviors. Like traditional psychology research, the ambition extends beyond merely cataloging behavior, to inferring hidden variables, and piecing together a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms, in order to elucidate why the system behaves as it does. We take the stance that LLMs are akin to alien minds - distinct from the notion of them being only stochastic parrots. We posit that they possess a highly complex internal cognition, encompassing representations of the world and mental concepts, which transcend mere stochastic regurgitation of training data. This cognition, while derived from human-generated content, is fundamentally alien to our understanding. This post compiles some high-level considerations for what successful LLM psychology research might entail, alongside broader discussions on the historical study of non-human cognition. In particular, we argue for maintaining a balance between experimental and field work, taking advantage of the differences between LLMs and biological intelligences, and designing experiments which are carefully tailored to LLMs as their own unique class of mind. Experiments vs Field Study One place to draw inspiration from is the study of animal behavior and cognition. While it is likely that animal minds are much more similar to our own than that of an artificial intelligence (at least mechanically), the history of the study of non-human intelligence, the evolution of the methodologies it developed, and the challenges it had to tackle can provide inspiration for investigating AI systems. El ordenador está conectado al sistema nervioso del hibernado, pudiendo controlar sus inputs sensoriales (con inputs falsos), se entiende que para estimular los cerebros y que no se deterioren durante la hibernación debido a la prolongada deprivación sensorial. Es matrix total, es un tipo de realidad virtual. En el “duermevela”, antes de entrar en las realidades suministradas por el ordenador, Kemmings ve lucecitas y colores. Es como las alucinaciones hipnagógicas (o hipnopómpicas, nunca recuerdo cuáles eran). Poder pasar ese tiempo sumergido en recuerdos suena como un plan genial: aunque cuántos en realidad podríamos superar esa prueba? Es realmente el caso de Kemmings una excepción porque ya es muy neurótico de casa? Cuantos tenemos recuerdos que nos harían volver locos? Si no puedes vivir en tus recuerdos mal plan, mala vida habrás tenido, no? Así que es un triste razonamiento el de Dick. Es gracioso cómo el robot a veces tiene que acabar haciendo de psicoanalista (como cuando se manifiesta como una voz al Kemmings infantil pre-trauma o como robot-médico en el hotel, o… como Martine? :) aunque no quiere. Por cierto otra referencia muy reciente el capítulo de Black Mirror Especial de Navidad (2016 creo), contiene eternidades virtuales en un instante. En la Guía del autoestopista de la Galaxia se habla de un personaje inmortal que tuvo que afrontar vivir eternamente y la congoja/aburrimiento que genera, pero que se le fue dando bastante bien; lo tenía casi todo controlado y lo hubiera conseguido (no enloquecer y llegar al final del cosmos) de no ser por las tardes de domingo. Genial, siempre me acuerdo. Bueno, al grano, comentar el tema de la culpa y la exploración psicológica. En este caso empezamos situándonos en lo que debería ser un buen recuerdo. Pero si ese recuerdo es de una relación terminada, de lo que te arrepientes, no puede tornarse en algo horrible? Y si esa realidad virtual es generada por el subconsciente, no puede volverse en tu contra, empezar a desmoronarse, empezar a atacarte.? En este sentido Dick estuvo incluso suave con el protagonista. Otra referencia de Black Mirror; la tercera temporada, el capítulo en el que prueban un dispositivo de realidad virtual que genera videojuegos de terror en base a tus propios miedos. O yo que sé, el "cortador de césped" mismo, peliculouner. Vuelvo al tema: parece que más bien Kemmings es un rayado y con él no funciona el truco porque viene “tarado” así que de ese primer recuerdo vamos hacia atrás como corresponde a una evaluación psicológica/psicoanalítica. El robot retrocede a su infancia buscando una zona de confort en los recuerdos previa a convertirse en un rayado (llámalo neurótico o como quieras) pero en realidad de esa manera está explorando el trauma Además, mola mucho que si basan la experiencia de tu memoria en tu subconsciente (y no en una falsedad impuesta, o sea lo consciente) lo oscuro va a emerger. Y mola también que las intervenciones del ordenador en el pasado agudizan el trauma (después de aparecer como una voz/Dios ante el niño Kemmings, cuando vuelve a recordar la escena de la casa con Martine, Kemmings está peor, porque Dios le vió cometer un pecado). El trauma aparece, toda la historia del gato, y de ahí surge el tema de la Culpa;:el desequilibrio que genera. El relato no incide mucho sobre ello, pero… esta culpa que impacta tanto sobre Kemmings.. se debe a su predisposición? Al evento en concreto (es circunstancial)? O.. se debe a la madre? Sólo se dice una línea, pero cuando Kemmings-niño va a ver a su madre esta no le hace acaso, se encuentra absorta en el “holovisor”. Muy interesante aquí el tema de lo importante que son los estilos de los padres/madre a la hora de generar diferentes tipos de apego en los niños que van a determinar si son más extrovertidos, retrotraídos, capaces de lidiar con la frustración, neuróticos,… Estos son todos lo semispoilers que traigo porque estoy un poco seco últimamente. La otra canción se llama "Deja vù", ya sólo por eso está justificado, del disco homónimo de Crosby Still Nash & Young, una joya brutal donde está también la canción cursi de cuando están en la casa y que para mí es la canción que mejor representa esa idea de anuncio de Ikea o de Seguros Ocaso "pareja pintando la casa con la que se acaban de hipotecar" mejor que la de.. “A house,.. in the middle of teh Street” mítica. George LoBuono is a journalist and researcher into the underside of U.S. history. In 1995 he began researching aliens and alien related programs. He has authored a book titled - Alien Mind: The Thought and Behavior of Extraterrestrials. Using information obtained from contactees LoBuono has tried to understand how aliens think and feel, and has shared his findings in his new book.
