Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
Before 'Ghosts' become 'Ancestors' with Shalini Masih, PhD (Worcestershire, UK)

“All of this together shaped how I began to think about mind, not as something to be mastered, but as a landscape of the unspoken whether it was ghosts or griefs or desires that were hard to relinquish. I saw that the ghost was not always an ‘other'. It was often intimate, tied to lost ones, sometimes to unmet desires, to unbearable longings, but in some ways possession was an attempt to keep close what was slipping away. The ghost doesn't just haunt, it feels as if it wants something, and we just have to learn to develop ears to listen to what it wants.”  Episode Description: We acknowledge Loewald's concept of 'ghosts becoming ancestors' and consider the similarities and differences with those who hold 'ghosts' to be literal. Shalini shares with us her journey to open herself to the uncertainty and ambiguity of these externalized entities while appreciating both their cultural and intrapsychic sources. We learn of her family's involvement with exorcisms, especially her grandmother's "fearless warmth" and "empathy that saw beyond the terror of the ghosts." She considers the many facets of mind that are represented by 'ghosts' and the essential value of approaching them as guides to the "landscape of the unspoken." Shalini describes a long term engagement that she had with an individual who "taught me to receive the inchoate and horrific...to contain the brokenness and not interpret it away.. and to appreciate the glimpses of beauty in the most grotesque parts of self."   Our Guest: Shalini Masih, a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and writer, grew up in India amidst priests and healers, witnessing spirit possession and exorcism. Now based in Worcestershire, UK, she holds a Master's degree in Psychoanalytic Studies from Tavistock & Portman, London, and a PhD from the University of Delhi. Mentored by psychoanalysts Michael Eigen and Sudhir Kakar, she's an award-winning scholar of the American Psychological Association. She has taught and supervised psychoanalytic psychotherapists in Ambedkar University, Delhi and in Birkbeck, University of London. Her acclaimed paper, 'Devil! Forbidden Intimacy: Marrying the 'Other' with Ashis Roy, PhD (Kolkata, India)

“The amount of guilt and the sense of alienation that people feel when they fall in love with someone who is ‘outside', and the struggle that they have to undergo to explain that choice which they fully don't understand themselves, is a very deep conflict that my work tries to capture. The title of my book is ‘Intimacy in Alienation', and alienation is something that is really very pregnant in the identities of these individuals who feel like aliens to their own community because their community cannot imagine why are they seeing the other as something positive but not as how the community wants them to see. So there's a big gap that often gets deeper and it widens and it really forecloses any conversation and imagination.” Episode Description: We begin with considering the nature of 'malignant othering' that Ashis describes in parts of the Hindu-Muslim interface in India. His thesis is that transcending the binary into a 'third' is essential in the "quest for newer foundations defining Hindu and Muslim identities that are freed from historically entrenched definitions." He describes the challenges faced by each community that lacks the imagination of what is positive in the other. We discuss the importance of family support for interfaith couples and how often that is lacking. He describes 'love-jihad' where the autonomous agency of the partners is, through the eyes of fundamentalism, reduced to stereotypes of oppressor-oppressed. Ashis describes his research methodology which borrows from the psychoanalytic method in its recognition of transference and repetition. He closes by sharing with us the impact on him of the riots of 2002 and behind that the latent presence of the atrocities of the 1947 Partition. He bemoans "the erosion of the narratives of harmony" and sees his work as his effort at healing.   Our Guest: Ashis Roy (PhD) is a Psychoanalyst at the Delhi Chapter of the Indian Psychoanalytic  Society ( IPA London). He works with adults and couples. For more than a decade he was on the Faculty at the Centre of Psychotherapy and Clinical Research, Ambedkar University, where he participated in institution building, taught psychoanalysis, and trained students to become Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists.  He is a faculty at CAPA (China-American Psychoanalytic Alliance) and is interested in exploring Asian and South Asian cultures using psychoanalysis. He hosts podcasts on the New Books Network and works with psychoanalysts across the globe. In this episode of our podcast Eyeway Conversations, George Abraham engages in a captivating discussion with Sandeep Singh, an assistant professor specializing in English literature at Ambedkar University in New Delhi. Sandeep's journey began in Mumbai, where he was born and raised. His educational path faced a delayed start due to ignorance and a lack of proper guidance. It was during this time that an ophthalmologist's advice led him to Happy Home and School for the Blind, a pivotal move that set the stage for Sandeep's educational journey. Inspiration struck Sandeep in the form of Akhtar Hussain, his senior, who played a significant role in shaping his English-speaking skills. Akhtar advised him to listen to the BBC and English cricket commentary on the radio, igniting Sandeep's passion for the language. After his formative years, Sandeep graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. His academic pursuits continued as he completed his Masters and M.Phil from JNU in New Delhi. It was during his time pursuing his Masters that he met Karuna, who would later become his wife. Married for a decade now, the couple is blessed with an 8-year-old daughter. Sandeep's professional journey took him to St. Stephen's College in Delhi, where he taught for 3.5 years before transitioning to his current role as an Assistant Professor at Ambedkar University. Beyond academia, Sandeep's interests span a wide spectrum. He finds joy in reading, traveling, music, exploring different cuisines, and nurturing friendships. In this Eyeway Conversations podcast episode, George Abraham engages in a captivating discussion with Sandeep Singh, an assistant professor specializing in English literature at Ambedkar University in New Delhi. Originating from Thane, Sandeep completed his post-graduation and MPhil at JNU in New Delhi. Sandeep found inspiration in Akhtar Hussain, his senior, who significantly influenced his English-speaking skills. His initial years saw Sandeep at home until he joined Happy Home and School for the Blind. Facing a lack of educational support in the '80s, Sandeep's parents encountered criticism from relatives. However, it was a specialist at Banaji Eye Hospital who suggested specialized schooling, initially met with resistance from his parents. Eventually, they acknowledged the importance of Sandeep's independence, leading to his enrollment in a school for the visually impaired. Despite starting his academic journey later than usual, Sandeep ambitiously pursued an MPhil and made a significant move to Delhi for his post-graduation, ultimately paving the illustrious path to his teaching career at St. Stephen's in Delhi. Married for a decade and blessed with a daughter, Sandeep's love story with his wife began during their post-graduation and culminated in marriage. The Union budget 2021 claimed a 137 percent increase in health and well being. However, the Union health budget still remains at about 0.34% of GDP – a slight increase from 0.31% last year’s budget estimate. The biggest scheme introduced in the past few years is the Ayushman Bharat scheme. In February 2020, the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman slashed the budget from Rs 6,400 crore to Rs 3,314 crore for the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. Also known as Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY), this scheme was rolled out to cover a population of about 50 crores. However, this scheme though has been underutilised and has not made health more accessible to people. With the unprecedented COVID-19 situation globally, India is also struggling with the health-related human resources of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. And, it’s important to understand the economic approach to handling the inequalities in the healthcare sector in the country. Earlier this month, the Union Education Ministry told a parliamentary panel that the plan to serve breakfast to students in government schools had to be shelved as the Finance Ministry had refused to sanction the Rs. 4,000 crore the programme needs. The refusal comes at a time when the country is facing a malnutrition crisis -- data from the latest National Family Health Survey shows an increase in stunting, in 13 of the 22 States and Union Territories that were covered. As this was 2019 data, experts believe that food insecurity during the pandemic could have worsened, especially with the immense disruption in services such as the mid-day meals, as well as due to economic distress. Where does India stand on addressing malnutrition? Have government schemes such as the flagship programme to address malnutrition, POSHAN Abhiyaan, worked? What have been the efforts made during the pandemic, and what more needs to be done to address a problem that not only affects children, but has long-lasting consequences upon the health and wellbeing of the nation? The Union budget 2021 claimed a 137 percent increase in health and well being. However, the Union health budget still remains at about 0.34% of GDP – a slight increase from 0.31% last year's budget estimate. With the unprecedented COVID-19 situation globally, India is also struggling with health care workers like doctors, nurses and other staff. And, it's important to understand the economic approach to handling the inequalities in the healthcare sector in the country. Educate, Agitate, Organise. This was the motto of the Indian scholar BR Ambedkar who led an extraordinary life of activism and achievement. It put him in conflict with many other political forces in his native country, such as the Indian National Congress and Mahatma Gandhi. In India itself, Ambedkar's legacy is widely respected but in other countries he is not so well known. And yet, Ambedkar was not only a leading intellectual of his day, brilliant orator, lawyer, successful politician and an unmatched champion of those suffering the harshest discrimination: he was also someone who rose from a Dalit background to being put in charge of writing the first constitution of independent India. The Dalits are the lowest of the low in the Indian social hierarchy, often considered as being below the lowest caste. To tell Ambedkar's story Rajan Datar is joined by three distinguished Ambedkar scholars: Sunil Khilnani, professor of politics and history at Ashoka University and author of Incarnations: India in Fifty Lives; Valerian Rodrigues, emeritus professor of political studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University and first Ambedkar chair at Ambedkar University, both in New Delhi, and author of The Essential Writings of B.R. Ambedkar; and Ananya Vajpeyi, associate professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in New Delhi and author of Righteous Republic: The Political Foundations of Modern India. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation of hunger in the country. A short survey conducted by the Right to Food Campaign titled ‘The Hunger Watch” reveals that people continue to have depressed incomes worsening their nutritional food intake. The survey conducted in September by the Right to Food Campaign tracked the situation of hunger amongst 4000 people from vulnerable and marginalised communities in 11 states across the country. For about one in four respondents, the income in September-October was half of what it was before lockdown. Over two-thirds say nutritional quality has worsened and quantity has reduced (in September-October) compared to pre-lockdown.  In this episode of The Suno India Show, Kunika Balhotra, Research & Communications Officer for Suno India reached out to Dipa Sinha Assistant Professor at Ambedkar University, New Delhi and a Convener of Right To Food Campaign to understand more about the Right to Food Campaign's Hunger Watch survey and the situation of hunger in the country during the COVID19 pandemic. In this episode, Dr Happymon Jacob discusses the colonial origins and the post-colonial evolution of the Sedition law with Anushka Singh (Author, Sedition in Liberal Democracies & Assistant Professor, Ambedkar University of Delhi). 150 Years since the imposition of Sedition Law in colonial India, the discussion probes whether these Laws are used to stifle free speech and political opposition in contemporary India. The discussion brings out the contrast between the popular conceptions of ‘sedition' in the country and the higher Judiciary's views on the same. The discussion also explores how the Sedition Law eventually made it to the Constitution despite most Constituent Assembly members viewing it as a repressive Colonial Law. The author argues that while the conviction rate is negligible when it comes to those charged under the controversial law, the process itself is the punishment. NOTE: The Kerala case referred to in the interview where the Director General of Police had issued guidelines for registering FIRs under section 124A in 2016 was in the wake of a sedition case filed against writer Kamal Chavara and not Thirumurgan Gandhi. Gandhi was also charged for sedition in Tamil Nadu, not Kerala.
