It's Mutual Aid March for our third episode of 2025! We sit down with friends out of West Virginia who tell us about their super cool project known as "The Holler House," where they are reclaiming culture and crafting space that serves as a portal for community from birth to death and all that comes in between. Our conversation explores the idea that almost everybody (including you--yes, you!) is already doing mutual aid in one form or another, they just don't call it that necessarily. And we talk about the key ingredient of mutual aid magic: human relationships, with all their messiness and vulnerability. You can support this podcast at www.ko-fi.com/rednecksrising; for all the places you can find us, check out our linktree. If you want to share your story on the show, get in touch with us at rednecksrising@gmail.com.To stay in touch with today's guests and support their work at the Holler House, contact them at hollerhouse@proton.me.For more on Mutual Aid Disaster Relief, check out their website: mutualaiddisasterrelief.org.

Chelsea sits down with our friend Alice to vent about the social infrastructure that was already failing prior to the catastrophe caused by the storm, and which was almost entirely wiped out by the storm's impact. Alice shares the government's recently announced plan to surface mine the French Broad River in order to restore access to I-40 as soon as possible, and we roast the American dependency on personal motor vehicles. You can support this podcast at www.ko-fi.com/rednecksrising; for all the places you can find us, check out our linktree. If you want to share your story on the show, get in touch with us at rednecksrising@gmail.comREFERENCES FOR TODAY'S SHOW:Britannica: Hurricane HeleneUSA Today: Helene was one of the deadliest storms in recent history. This episode kicks off 2025 by continuing to explore the saga of the Cop Nation, a continuation of the conversation that was catalyzed in episode 33 on Cop City in Atlanta. In this episode, we shift our focus North to Hershey, Pennsylvania -- the so called "sweetest place on Earth" -- where nearly $400 MILLION is being spent to develop another military-grade police training facility. In this conversation, co-produced by our good friend T over at @appalachianantifascists on instagram, we talk with Lina from the movement to Stop Cop City in Hershey, PA. What happens when the very land we live on exposes the multigenerational trauma being experienced at the hands of white supremacist state violence? What is it called when peaceful protestors are murdered by law enforcement to protect state interests? How do we respond when even the most “progressive” politicians end up bought out by the very entities they claim to stand against? We had to jump through hoops to get this episode to publish for listening -- multiple digital transfers, various friends helping with editing, files mysteriously corrupting. It was worth every second and every helping hand -- in this episode, we hear from powerful organizers and faith leaders on the frontlines of the Stop Cop City movement: Reverand Keyanna Jones Moore, Minister Matthew Johnson, musician River-Michael, and the mother of the late activist known as Tortuguita, Belkis Terán. They share with us a 101 introduction to what's happening in so-called "Cop City" in Atlanta (as just one of many such training facilities in 47 states across the United States of America) and we explore the state's strategy that combinescreating more poverty by divesting from communities and unraveling safety net programs;criminalizing poverty with "crack downs" on homelessness, substance use and addiction, etc. and;increased militarization of law enforcement*TRIGGER WARNING - this episode contains dialogue related to historic racial trauma, police brutality, state violence, and mental health. Starting off April on the right foot: no fools here, just Chelsea and Tiara sitting down for what was supposed to be a primer on the situation in Palestine, but turned into a conversation that had to go on for two whole days and six hours of content. This is the first of the episodes that came from that content, and in this episode, we get to know Tiara better as a fresh face to cohost the podcast with us. She tells us about the grief that compelled her to stand in at a direct action in solidarity with Palestinians in October, and how that vulnerability in sharing her grief has transformed the lives and hearts of her own family members. We do our best to pull on the threads that are woven between Appalachia and occupied Palestine, and touch on the importance of paying attention, holding space, and reciprocity. We start to dig into the geopolitical history of the land and its people that led to the current genocide, but we cover that much more in depth in next week's episode.*TRIGGER WARNING - this episode contains dialogue related to genocide, settler colonialism, white supremacy, anti-semitism, and violence against human beings (including children)*You can support this podcast at www.ko-fi.com/rednecksrising; for all the places you can find us, check out our linktree. If you want to share your story on the show, get in touch with us at rednecksrising@gmail.comRESOURCES & FURTHER READING:'Jihad' is not a dirty wordWhat Does 'Jihad' Really Mean to Muslims? What does the term 'jihad' mean?PBS Resources for Teaching about IslamWere Israelis Detained on Sept. 11 Spies?More on Israel and 9/11 ConnectionsFalse Flag A series of CIA memos describes how Israeli Mossad agents posed as American spies to recruit members of the terrorist organization Jundallah to fight their covert war against IranPEOPLE TO FOLLOW ON THE GROUND:Motaz Azaiza Saleh AljafarawiIsmail Al DahdouhBisan OwdaWael Al DadouhPlestia Alaqad

Joey and Chelsea jam on a vision for food systems that support our communities, reduce waste, and are rooted in shared community building and relationships: transformative, regenerative, sustainable models that contradict capitalism by nature. We surface the concept of radical self-reliance among our communities, and how fresh food offers so many options for ways to act in alignment with revolution. And, because of who we are here at Rednecks Rising, we talk about how critical trauma-informed approaches are to counter-organizing against the recruitment tactics of fascist groups.---More information & further reading from today's conversation:1) LEAP: Local Environmental Agriculture Project - https://www.leapforlocalfood.org/2) Harvest Collective - https://www.thc.coop/)3) Agrarian trust - https://www.agrariantrust.org/blog/cultivating-resiliency-in-roanoke-virginia/4) Appalachian Sustainable Development, West Virginia HIVE - https://wvhive.com/5) Anarcho-syndicalism: https://libcom.org/article/what-anarcho-syndicalism6) Anarcho-syndicalism continued: https://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/rudolf-rocker-anarchosyndicalism---To support this podcast or find us on social media, check out http://linktr.ee/rednecksrising

TW: This week's episode discusses violent events. Listener caution/discretion is advised. In today's episode, I thought I would explore the history of Labor Day, given that the holiday in the USA is approaching. Little did I know, I would end up in yet another rabbit hole of events related to May Day (AKA International Worker's Day) and the USA's intentional suppression of worker organizing all through the end of the 19th century. In this episode, we explore beyond the boundaries of Appalachia and find even more interconnections between the fate of the poor and working class. All in all, we look at the Great Railroad Strikes, the Haymarket Riot, and the government's official recognition of Labor Day in the late 1890s.(Spoiler alert: LABOR DAY WAS ADOPTED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO INTERNATIONAL WORKER'S DAY TO UNDERMINE TRULY REVOLUTIONARY ORGANIZING EFFORTS !!!!!)Sources for today's episode:1) Reneau, K. We bond on our shared goal of our podcasts to amplify the various stories and voices of our region, and we talk about how we got started on our podcasting ventures. It wouldn't be a Rednecks Rising episode if we didn't dunk on the generalizations portraying Appalachia as a monolithic region, and as an added touch this time around we also touch on spiritual grounding and guidance under late-stage capitalism. What about navigating political identities under the two-party for-profit electoral system? Yup! We talk about that too, and of course, so much more. Please excuse the broadband issues that interfered with some parts of the audio in this interview.
