Thirteen thousand children and counting....and as you heard on our hiatus announcement, at home, moms are losing their kids, too, to the continued shock of the community. Why are we so shocked? Are we untouchable, above grief and trials from Allah? No, He's promised them to us, and we pray to pass all those tests. Ameen. One of the moms who came on before is our beloved teammate, Saira Sufi, who even recently moved us to tears at our gala when she shared the story of her son, Hadi. She is our role model, who embodies beautiful patience and imaan while facing what we can only imagine is lifelong grief. Despite losses that we would describe as "crushing," she crushed them, and instead has built a legacy for Hadi that will make those of us who never met him, truly regretful. This may be a triggering episode for anyone who has suffered immense loss and grief, so maybe listen in a group so you can support each other through this episode. Remember to pray for our sisters and families abroad who are waking up every day to the wrenching reality of an unalived child or relative. Their grief is so tragic because it was 100% manmade and 100% avoidable. Also, let's never forget to support medical research and to join minority blood registries in case we can ever help another family avoid illness and loss. This episode is for every mom, sibling, and family who's ever experienced the loss of a child, and we pray for their continued healing and reward with Allah SWT. I welcome my guest, Saira Sufi, to take a deep dive into the discussion of how one of her twin son's diagnoses of a rare bone marrow disorder, Aplastic Anemia led her and her remaining son to become staunch advocates for bone marrow donations. Recruiting bone marrow donors of racial minorities is important, because finding bone marrow matches for minorities and mixed race individuals is especially hard. This is why Saira works hard to raise awareness and to recruit as many people to be bone marrow donors as possible. This episode is a testament to the fortitude of a family in memory of a very special young boy.To find out more about being a bone marrow donor please visit the following website and consider being a donor yourself. Having spent most of her youth in and out of hospital, taking on, and beating, Aplastic Anemia (a life-threatening autoimmune disease), Haylee Kalani had the chance to experience life in a new light. An auto-immune disorder where one's good cells would attack one another, from ages 8-13 Haylee became familiar with feelings of being lost, confused, insecure, and overweight during her most impressionable years. Haylee leaned into her love of creativity and that snowballed into discovering that she had the opportunity to be an Audio Engineer at a recording studio in Seattle WA (Robert Lang Studios). This is where she first found her ability and calling to help other people transform into the most creative, productive, connected version of themselves. Haylee strives to help people successfully impact others with their gifts. She now runs a successful coaching practice and focuses on life meditation, fitness, and play to keep one grounded and true to themselves.

But today, thanks to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, the support and comfort from his former high school principal as well as dozens of Bloodworks Northwest blood donors he'll never know, Mack is able to tell his story of survival. And as we discover on this edition of "Bloodworks 101," Mack Bell had to come face-to-face with something we're all adjusting to - more than a year of social distancing. Part of Mack's story is the fact that as an African-American, the deck literally is stacked against him in his effort to find a suitable match as he fought Aplastic Anemia. Retrospective histologic analyses of bone biopsies and of post mortem samples from normal persons of different age groups, and of bone biopsies of age- and sex-matched groups of patients with primary osteoporosis and aplastic anemia show characteristic age dependent as well as pathologic changes including atrophy of osseous trabeculae and of hematopoiesis, and changes in the sinusoidal and arterial capillary compartments. These results indicate the possible role of a microvascular defect in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and aplastic anemia.
