Archie's case underlines the growing crisis over the lack of trust many ordinary people have in medical professionals. Nobody wants to go back to absolute deference to doctors, but is there an alternative to furious hostility and judges having to rule on care decisions? Doctors and patients also need to wrestle with a new participant in these vexed and fraught conflicts – the public, newly involved in these cases via social media and online campaigns. But is it helping to have activists turning these unique and tragic stories of deeply sick children into grist for the culture war mill? Twelve-year-old Archie Battersbee died on 7 August, after months of legal wrangling between doctors who believed he was brain dead and wished to end life support, and his family who resisted this. This tragic case has captured a lot of media attention, and in this episode we try to unpick some of the complicated medical and ethical challenges thrown up by the story. Why is it so much harder today than in the past to actually determine if a person has died? How can, and should, the courts overrule the wishes of a child's parents regarding medical treatment (or its withdrawal)? And can Christians be pro-life and anti-euthanasia, while still supporting the doctors' wish to allow Archie to die? It's Tuesday, August 9th, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Chinese Communists arrest Early Rain Covenant Church pastor The Chi-Coms are causing more trouble for the Early Rain Covenant Church, with another arrest of a pastor on August 2nd, reports China Aid. Preacher Wu Wuqing was taken from his home on a COVID-19 technicality. Pastor Wu has been arrested and harassed at least five times this year. Thus far, 200 members of the church have been arrested. Lead pastor Wang Yi is serving a nine-year sentence, and another elder is serving out a four-year sentence.   Pray for Early Rain Covenant Church during these hard times of persecution by the Chinese Communists. British High Court killed 12-year-old boy by withholding oxygen The British High Court made the decision to end the life of a 12-year-old lad named Archie Battersbee by removing palliative oxygen against his parents' wishes, He died at 12:15 on Saturday afternoon, reports The Telegraph.  The court also refused to allow him to die in a hospice situation. The ordeal began towards the beginning of June when his mother reported him to having possibly participated in a dangerous, foolish stunt referred to as “blackout.”  The Britain's socialist medical system oversaw Archie's medical care. Trump wins Conservative Political Action Conference poll The Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll taken over the weekend in Dallas has Donald Trump still at the top of the heap for the 2024 presidential race, reports the New York Post. Trump took 69% of the vote, and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis came in a distant second place with 24% of the vote.  FBI raids Trump's Mar-a-Lago Speaking of former President Trump, last night he said that his Florida Mar-a-Lago home is “under siege” and “occupied by a group of FBI agents,” reports the Epoch Times. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote, “These are dark times for our nation, as my beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.” Trump's lawyer, Christina Bobb, confirmed with CNN that the FBI seized documents from Mar-a-Lago. Biden's bill hires 87,000 new IRS agents Expect more tyranny in America. The U.S. Congress just approved another $80 billion to hire 87,000 IRS agents, in hopes of generating more tax money through tax audits and other means, reports CBN News. Listen to what Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas said from the floor of the Senate as he warned Americans of what is to come. CRUZ: “There are a lot of bad things in this bill. But few are worse than the proposal by Democrats in this bill to double the size of the IRS and create 87,000 new IRS agents. ... The House Ways and Means Committee, the minority, has put out an estimate that under this bill, there will be 1.2 million new audits per year, with over 700,000 of those new audits falling on taxpayers making $75,000 or less.” Biden's bill also raises taxes by $700 billion The massive boost to the IRS came as part of the Schumer-Manchin social spending and tax increase bill. It passed through the U.S. Senate by the narrow margin of 51-50 over the weekend. Vice President Kamala Harris cast the deciding vote. The bill increases taxes by $700 billion and spends another $400 billion on more health care subsidies and environmental programs. In a statement, Senator Cruz said, “This bill is a give-away to the Democrats' radical leftist base at the expense of middle-class Americans. It's a betrayal of President Biden's promise to not raise taxes on the middle class. Make no mistake – this bill will hurt America and hardworking Americans at a time when we can least afford it.” Biden's new taxes largest increase since 1968 According to the TaxFoundation, the Biden tax increase proposals are the largest the country has seen since 1968. The largest year to year federal expenditure increases since World War 2 occurred in 2020 under President Donald Trump, in 2008 under George W. Bush, and in 1975 under Richard Nixon. And the largest federal spending increases over the length of an administration occurred under Ronald Reagan with a 69% increase, Richard Nixon with a 60% increase, George W. Bush with a 58% increase, and Donald Trump with a 54% increase.  Proverbs 28:2 explains this well. It says, “Because of the transgression of a land, many are its princes; But by a man of understanding and knowledge right will be prolonged.” Olivia Newton-John died Olivia Newton-John, the 1970s pop singer and movie star, has gone to meet her Maker at 73 years of age. Best known for her role in the 1978 film Grease, her most successful hit song, “Physical,” was banned on radio stations in the early 1980s for its scandalous lyrics.  Newton-John told Fox News she felt “a little embarrassed that it was banned,” but she said, “Compared to what I'm listening to on the radio now, it's more like a lullaby.” 1 John 2:17 explains what's happening here.  “The world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” Honus Wagner's baseball card sold for $7.25 million And finally, hardly anybody has ever heard of him, but he was a big baseball star in the early 1900s, on the order of Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb. Honus Wagner played for the Louisville Colonels and the Pittsburgh Pirates between 1897 and 1917.  His baseball card just sold for – get this -- $7.25 million, reports Fox Business. Not wanting his image associated with smoking products sold through the cards, Honus refused to allow the American Tobacco Company to use his image on the card sometime after 1909.   One of the first professional baseball players in America, Honus Wagner maintained a batting average of .328 throughout his career of 2,794 games.    Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Tuesday, August 9th, in the year of our Lord 2022. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Coming in at the bottom of the list was St. Louis, Missouri, which was named the most dangerous city in America. Milnes says it's hard to know why St. Louis is so dangerous, but one factor might be the fact that it's struggling economically. “The population has decreased over time rather than increased like the population of America and the GDP of the St. Louis metro area has grown slower than the overall country since 2001,” says Milnes. Great to have Caroline Farrow join us again to give us her honest appraisals on the talking points, news and media from the past week. Under the microscope this episode..... - The tragic case of Archie Battersbee - 10k + Canadian euthanasia killings in 2021 - Covid face masks 'devastating' bird populations - Tory Leadership Race: Is it all over for Rishi? - Loneliness is another cause of strokes and heart attacks say 'experts' - Polls show vaccine deaths outnumber Covid deaths in U.S. households - Alex Jones ordered to pay $45m in damages In 2010, frustrated by many of the media headlines and negative coverage of Catholicism, Caroline began a blog in defence of Catholic teaching and to reflect on UK current affairs and world events through the lens of a Catholic woman. What began as nothing more than personal musings designed to explain and propose controversial ethics and life issues to those who had struggled with them, or to de-bunk misleading narratives and headlines, soon mushroomed and popular posts would receive more than 30,000 unique visitors a day. Between 2011 and 2017, she was a member of the organisation Catholic Voices, set up to promote the defence of Catholic teaching in the public square and made numerous media interventions on their behalf and quickly became the 'go to' voice for media organisations looking to represent a female conservative Catholic point of view. Since 2013 Caroline has writes a weekly column for the Catholic Universe and has written for and featured in a number of other publications such as the Catholic Herald, the National Catholic Register, the Conservative Woman, Mercatornet, Crisis Magazine, LifeSiteNews and Church Militant. She used to write on Catholic culture at the now defunct Spectator Arts blog and has been featured in the Daily Mail, the Observer and the New Statesman. In 2013, Caroline was included as part of the first cohort of the BBC's '100 women' and she regularly features on BBC News, Sky News, ITV's Good Morning Britain, BBC Sunday Morning Live, the Big Questions and has made multiple appearances on Radio 4's flagship Today programme, Woman's Hour, the Moral Maze and the Sunday programme as well as featuring in one-off documentaries. Caroline also presented the coverage for March for Life UK for EWTN and has contributed to News Nightly and Celtic Connections. She also frequently contributes to Talk Radio, LBC and BBC local radio as well as BBC Radio Ulster, discussing matters pertaining to Catholicism, feminism and the challenges of motherhood and family life. Caroline has an eclectic career background. She began her professional life as a student accountant for a big 5 firm before succumbing to a desire for travel and adventure and became a member of cabin crew working both long and short-haul routes for internationally acclaimed airlines. Having got the travel bug out of her system, she returned to work within investment banking and private equity in the City of London until her first child was born. Caroline is currently the campaign director at CitizenGO, has 5 children of school-age, four girls and one boy and is married to a Catholic priest who converted from Anglicanism, a few years after they were married.
