A new film from Martin Scorsese is always an event, but THE IRISHMAN is one that, for many, won’t happen at a movie theatre. After a short theatrical run in select cities, Scorsese's latest - which reunites the director with Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, and adds Al Pacino to the mix - will show up on Netflix. Adam and Josh, fresh from their own theatrical screening, consider the film in the context of Scorsese's work, specifically his career-spanning gangster movies. Ash Is Purest White is the first Jia Zhangke film to release theatrically in India. First, let's just take a moment to celebrate that. The Chinese director is one of the world's most acclaimed storytellers. #MartinScorsese (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23MartinScorsese) described his cinema as ‘the finest, toughest, most vitally alive work in modern moviemaking.' Jia Zhangke's films are a precise record of the sweeping social and economic forces that have shaped China in the last few decades. His films, which combine realism with playfulness, have won awards at leading film festivals including Cannes and Berlin. Ash Is Purest White premiered at the #CannesFilmFestival (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23CannesFilmFestival) last year. Here's #AnupamaChopra (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%23AnupamaChopra) 's review.

Episode #32: This episode sees the return of Alan Mattli to the Podcast. He brings with him a gem: the German classic THE LOST ONE, about post-war Germany. It goes nicely with ASH IS PUREST WHITE.
We're going from online to on-crime this week as we take a look at acclaimed coming-of-age drama Eighth Grade and Jia Zhang-ke's epic Ash Is Purest White. Plus we welcome Bertie Gilbert who brings some insight into the world of YouTubers and filmmaking. Bo Burnham, a former YouTuber himself, has made an incredibly impressive directorial debut with Eighth Grade, a refreshingly sincere look at a teenage girl growing up in the digital age. Ash is Purest White is an epic, decades-spanning crime drama about a woman who, after being released from prison, goes in search of her gangster boyfriend who left her there years ago. For much of his career, Jia Zhangke’s films were officially banned in his home country, China. But through austere, realist movies like Still Life, Platform, and The World, Jia became one of the most celebrated directors on the international arthouse circuit. His latest film, Ash Is Purest White, appears at first to be a conventional mob epic, focused on a “gangster’s moll” character played magnificently by Zhao Tao. But with a story beginning in 2001 and spanning 17 years, the movie is just as much about the effects of the rapid growth of China’s economy on its society. The dramatic changes led some working-class Chinese to form criminal brotherhoods for support. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's a sampler platter of movies this week on Breakfast All Day, from indies to foreign films, great stuff to middling stuff. A very stuffy Alonso overcomes his allergies to join Christy in reviews of the all-star Netflix action thriller "Triple Frontier," the subtly powerful Chinese drama "Ash Is Purest White" (with a tour de force performance from Zhao Tao, above), the dull and safe post-World War II romance "The Aftermath" and the French film "Sorry Angel," about two men who fall in love in the midst of the AIDS epidemic. We also have a bit of movie news: the fallout from the college admissions scandal and how it's hurt Lori Loughlin's career (because any excuse to discuss Hallmark Channel movies is good for Alonso) and the announcement that James Gunn will once again direct the third "Guardians of the Galaxy."
Tyler and David discuss what they've been watching, including Cuba and the Cameraman, Nothing Bad Can Happen, Cold Pursuit, Ash Is Purest White, Fighting with My Family, Five Feet Apart, Breathless and Secret Sunshine.
