We remember liking 2009's Whiteout starring Kate Beckinsale. Apparently, we don't know what we are talking about since it is sitting at Rotten Tomatoes with 7%, That's not a typo, it's at 7%, So what are we missing? We remember it had a good cast, a great lead, an interesting story, and an awesome backdrop. Join us, Ana and Jimmy, as we traverse the sub-zero escapades of "Whiteout" with Kate Beckinsale, whose US Marshal character doesn't let a little frostbite interfere with her impeccable style. With wit sharper than the Antarctic wind, we riff on the movie's logic-defying moments, from Beckinsale's pristine appearance to the baffling choice to exclude shower scenes in an environment that's anything but tropical. Beyond the giggles, we take a genuine look at the film's noteworthy cast, including Tom Skerritt and Alex O'Loughlin, and the unique challenges of life at an Antarctic outpost, all while comparing the film to other isolation horror flicks.Have you ever wondered why a film can leave critics and audiences ice cold? We ponder the same as we sift through the frosty critical reception of "Whiteout," juxtaposing it with audience reviews that run the gamut from icy disdain to less-than-warm praise. Stick around as we carve through the movie's layers, starting with a Russian plane crash and segueing into Deputy US Marshal Kerry Stetco's backstory. We analyze the plot's snowy slips and slides and chuckle at the clichéd flashbacks that are supposed to chill our spines but instead raise our eyebrows. Don't forget to zip up your parka as we scrutinize the climax's improbable twists, musing over diamond smuggling schemes and murder mysteries that are more slippery than they appear. As we wrap up our frosty film discussion, we consider the pros and cons of adding "Whiteout" to your watchlist. Is it a diamond in the rough or just ice masquerading as a gem? Sure, we may regret not renting over buying, but there's a certain charm to a thriller that chugs along like a snowmobile in need of a tune-up. Whether you think the movie is a blizzard of excitement or more like a drizzle of doldrums, we invite you to button up your coat and join the debate. Find out if "Whiteout" will leave you with the chills—or if it will just leave you out in the cold.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

Can a "messy" movie also be "great"? Adam Sandler's career leading up to "Click," in 2006, was a defined by slapstick comedies made for teens, with only occasional dabblings in more "serious" fare ("Spanglish" and "Punch-Drunk Love"). "Click," however, tried to do both: be dumb fun, and make the audience feel something real. In this episode, Mike and Brian argue over whether or not that risk paid off; they talk expectations vs. reality, as well as the role marketing plays in molding a movie's identity. A remake of the film Total Recall (1990), author Philip K. Dick's classic Sci-Fi short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale returns to the big screen starring Colin Farrell, Bryan Cranston, and Kate Beckinsale, and directed by Underworld's Len Wiseman. The planet has been decimated by chemical war in the late 21st century, leaving only two nations -- the United Federation of Britain and the Colony. Douglas Quaid (Farrell) is a factory worker with a stable job and a loving wife (Beckinsale), but upon learning that a company named Rekall could grant him the memory of the ultimate espionage adventure, he decides to take a virtual vacation. But in the midst of having the new memories implanted, something goes haywire. He's branded a spy, the authorities close in, and he quickly flees for his life. Later, Quaid discovers that his life and memories were implanted. He joins forces with rebel soldier Melina (Jessica Biel) on a mission to track down Matthias (Bill Nighy), the head of a resistance movement that's been labeled a terrorist organization by the tyrannical Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston). Cohaagen seeks to control the entire free world. The harder Quaid fights to defeat him, the clearer it becomes that his memory had been altered long before he walked into Rekall.

Sorry everyone, we suck! Yeah we missed our normal pod day but hey we got er done. Matt and Mike are both very busy, especially Mike preparing to add to his brood. Today the guys chat about an Amazon Original, Jolt starring Kate Beckinsale and Stanley Tucci. Not action murder movie topics include westerns, Arizona Rattlers lose, and Y: The Last Man. Have you ever wondered what would happen if you mixed Jon Wick with Crank and tossed in some Kate Beckinsale, wonder no more! That film is here and it's called Jolt. This flick is not going to win any awards but it sure is a ton of fun. Fast action, vibrant colors, a great cast, and a decent story, what else do you want? Beckinsale plays a character that can't control her anger, subsequently leading her to self-inflicted shock therapy until she meets the man of her dreams. He is murdered by his boss and it is all out revenge for the rest of the film.  Mike and Matt both agree this is well worth the watch if you are into action or revenge movies. Mike awards Jolt a modest 2.5 out of 5 Reels. Matt rates the film a full reel higher with 3.5 out of 5 Reels. Next week Mike and Matt return to the theaters to catch Clint Eastwood's latest Cry Macho. Hopefully we will record on time next week too. "The Gentleman" - The Blade Dive, Episode 9. Charles Beckinsale, an incredibly humble individual, yet one of the most influential leaders and talented masterminds of the industry who, worth noting, is truly in it for the right reasons! Beckinsale joins us to discuss what it's like growing up in Australia, his career as a professional Snowboarder as well as how those skills transitioned over to the successes he has seen in Snow Industry management and operations today.A world renowned Terrain Park builder and business owner, Charles Beckinsale came from humble beginnings - Growing up on the coast of Australia. As a young grom, along with his Mum and sister, Beckinsale moved to a small country town (now the ‘place to be' for the Snow industry in Australia) - Jindabyne, New South Wales. Quickly familiarizing himself with his new ‘Snowy Mountains' playground and obtaining his setup through swap meets and discount sales, Beckinsale was equipped ...and he hit the slopes as any first timer would, absolutely frothing. Beckinsale continued to pursue his interest in Snowboarding, investing time around those that were associated with the Terrain Park program at Thredbo Resort. With his scope of interest expanding, Charles Beckinsale was keen to get behind the sticks and delve into Snowcat operations, whilst still riding pro. Beckinsale earned an opportunity to grow his skill set, venturing across the pond to operate at Squaw Valley, California, USA, ironically before even getting the opportunity in Australia and from there, the rest is history. Beckinsale was and continues to be instrumental in putting Australian Snowboarding and Terrain Parks on the map, managing and evolving programs such as Thredbo Resort and Perisher, Snowy Mountains, NSW, Australia.Highs don't come without lows and Charles Beckinsale discusses the dramatic side of the industry - the operator social circles and the need to surround yourself with like minded positive people. Beckinsale opens up about the risks of starting “The Stomping Grounds”, the time and tolls it took and quite frankly... how much he has sacrificed to be where he is, today. In true ‘Charles Beckinsale' form, Beckinsale would be the first person to tell you that none of his successes came without the help from others and credits people like Torstein Horgmo, Jason “NINJA” Isaacs, Brandon Dodds and others, as some of his biggest supporters. A husband and father, Beckinsale views time by his family's side as precious and it's rare that his family does not join him as he travels the globe. This episode is full of laughs, yet the blade does dive deep into being true to oneself and not sacrificing authenticity, operator pay, time management and various other, often shied away from, topics. Enjoy...  and if you're in the machine, go ahead and TURN THE VOLUME UP!Follow us on:https://www.instagram.com/thebladedive/https://www.facebook.com/thebladedive

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, Conor and Dan dish on our movie crushes. More specifically, the movie crush from Dan's life as a young cinephile: Kate Beckinsale. The B-Sides in the pipeline are: Laurel Canyon, Tiptoes, Nothing but the Truth, Whiteout, and Everybody's Fine. The sheer diversity of these five pictures cannot be overstated. Beckinsale, while known by most Americans for her role in the Underworld franchise, comes from a comedy lineage in the U.K., the daughter of sitcom legend Richard Beckinsale. Soon enough, period pieces like Much Ado About Nothing gave way to Hollywood dramas like Brokedown Palace and indie spotlights like The Last Days of Disco for Kate Beckinsale. And then...Pearl Harbor! All of these B-Sides are what happened after the Michael Bay epic and the spark-plug start that was Underworld. We discuss how exactly Tiptoes got made, Beckinsale's refreshing honesty in interviews, the sad failure of Nothing but the Truth (a take on the Judith Miller/Valerie Plame Affair) and the brilliance of late-period, understated Robert De Niro. She also won the title role in the widely admired British mini-series adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma and particular notice for her performance in John Schlesinger’s version of the Emma update, Cold Comfort Farm. “It was from Cold Comfort Farm that I thought Kate would be perfect for the Charlotte character in The Last Days of Disco,” Stillman says, “and her role in the Schlesinger film was essentially Austen-derived. It was the first time I wrote a part with a particular actor in mind. The Last Days of Disco would be Kate’s first American role, winning her the London Film Critics’ “Best Supporting Actress” award, and leading to stardom in America in a series of notable films including Michael Bay’s epic Pearl Harbor, the hit romantic comedy Serendipity opposite John Cusack, and the ensemble drama, Laurel Canyon, with Christian Bale and Frances McDormand. Then began her remarkable run as the iconic action hero ‘Selene’ in the Underworld series for which she has recently completed the shoot for a fifth installment, focusing its story on the next generation of Vampires and Lycans and the war that continues to wage between the two species. Her additional film credits include her early British film Shooting Fish, Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator, Contraband, Total Recall, Everybody’s Fine, the thriller Vacancy, Click, Jonathan Kaplan’s Brokedown Palace, Van Helsing, Absolutely Anything, and the independent dramas Nothing But The Truth, Stonehearst Asylum, The Face of an Angel, Snow Angels, and Fragments (aka Winged Creatures). Beckinsale’s television appearances include playing in One Against the Wind for Hallmark Films. On the stage, Beckinsale has appeared in ‘Clocks & Whistles’, ‘Sweetheart’, and the National Theatre’s touring production of ‘The Seagull.’ Beckinsale, who was born and raised in London before going on to Oxford, has for some years been based in Los Angeles.

Thanks to our latest Patreon patron, we were tasked with taking a look at one of the most baffling films of the early '00s, Tiptoes. Not only does the film star a veritable whos who of know famous and award-winning actors the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Gary Oldman, Peter Dinklage, and Patricia Arquette, but it also attempts to tackle a serious topic: dwarfism. McConaughey stars as Steve, a normal man from a family of dwarfs who knocks up his girlfriend, played by Kate Beckinsale, only to be unable to come to terms with the fact their child may be a dwarf. It's a bizarre, tonally inconsistent film that has to be seen to be believed. Chris and Eric discuss the film, Gary Oldman as a dwarf, and why it's seemingly gone under the radar for so long.As always, you can follow Chris Stachiw at @KultureStach, Eric Kniss at @tychomagnetics and Kulture Shocked at @KultureShocked. Every once in a while you encounter a movie that quite literally boggles the mind and brings forth emotions like anger, rage, and befuddlement.  Tiptoes (2003) is one of those movies.  The gang inducts this Oldman, McConaughey, Beckinsale stinker into The Pantheon of Utter Shit.  We try to answer the big question of what bet did these award winning actors lose that forced them to star in this shit bomb. Movie News! Michael Keaton rumored to star as "Vulture" in new Spider Man Reboot. Tiptoes - Key Points How did this movie get made?  Seriously, how in the hell did this movie 1. attain actors with very distinguished careers and 2. attain the funding for it. The studio tried to dress up this movie with a trailer that reframes it as a "Romantic Comedy" yet it still is a very unbalanced and offensive drama. This was one of the crap roles that Peter Dinklage referred to in a recent commencement address. Oh and you really can only watch this movie drunk to get past the plot holes the size of the grand canyon. Actual lines of dialogue from the film Rolfe: "Little People Shit." Carol: "So you had a circle jerk with a bunch of little people? I would have loved to see that." Steven: "I need new chromosomes!!" **Punches wall** This is quite literally black face with little people   Gary Oldman is a fantastic actor but this portrayal of a little person is just down right offensive. It is extremely difficult to watch the performance and take anything Oldman says seriously due to the fact that he is pretending to be a little person. This is another example of white washing in Hollywood.  Look at Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's and the modern film, Gods of Egypt; putting name recognition above character/story. That question takes center stage in a lively new episode of the podcast, in which Peter travels to Toronto, Canada to talk movies with critic and writer Calum Marsh. Calum traces his cinephilia to his VHS and DVD days in suburban England, eventually developing via the influence of rigorous Jonathan Rosenbaum, and then swinging to an attempt to understand how film criticism can work more similarly to the great literary critics. They talk the beauty of Blackhat and the Kim's Video generation, but most of all they discuss prose and its function in describing a visual medium. They then top it off with a look at Whit Stillman's wondrous nostalgia critique, The Last Days of Disco, using Stillman's own novelization of his work as an examination of the different worlds of cinema and literature. 0:00-1:53 Opening2:37-9:38 Establishing Shots - Gems from UCLA's Festival of Preservation10:23-59:27 Deep Focus - Calum Marsh1:00:04-1:02:16 Mubi Sponsorship - Travel Plans and Broken Specs1:03:43 -1:26:57 Double Exposure - The Last Days of Disco (Whit Stillman)1:27:01-1:28:58 Close / Outtake

Schwarzenegger vs Farrell, Stone vs Beckinsale, Cox vs Cranston, a little mutant puppet man vs Bill Nighy-- we stack the new 2012 version of Total Recall against a fresh viewing of the original 1990 film. Does the original hold up? Does the remake match or even exceed its predecessor?  Why have they never made a version of Total Recall that doesn't star a cast member of Breaking Bad? How badly do you feel for that guy Quaid uses as a human shield? What happened to Mars? Seriously, did someone making the new Total Recall just space out, fuck up, and forget that the movie is supposed to be about going to Mars? Ah, forget it, I'll be in the car... MUSIC: This week’s featured artist is Rival Boys Also, if you haven't seen any of Schwarzenegger's commentary/oversimplified description on the Total Recall DVD-- you haven't lived.
