On today's episode of Architectette we welcome Chrissie Davis.  Chrissie is a general contractor and founder of San Jose based, Incorage. She partners with developers, subcontractors, and the larger development community to build multi-family and mixed-use housing across the Bay Area. In this episode, we also explore her previous role as President of CORE Builders, where she led the company to triple its business, making it the 25th largest general contractor in Silicon Valley and the “best residential contractor to work for with under 50 employees” in 2023. As President, Chrissie was proud of cultivating a diverse team, comprised of 50% women and 75% people of color, and aims to create a similar environment of success and inclusion as she expands Incorage. We talk about: - Chrissie's career as a general contractor and how she grew from Assistant Project Manager to President. - Chrissie elaborates on her strategies for growth including system implementation, market expansion, and business development that helped CORE Builders grow from $30 million to $100 million in revenue. - We next talk about how the lack of diversity and representation of women leadership of general contracting firms in the Bay Area influenced her to start her own company.  - We hear about Chrissie's passion for affordable housing, landing Incorage's first project, managing her routine and workload as a solopreneur, and the power of gratitude, journaling, and Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In.  Links: Connect with Chrissie on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrissie-davis-general-contractor/ Books mentioned on the podcast: Architectette Bookshop Architectette Podcast Website: www.architectette.com Connect with the pod on LinkedIn, Instagram (@architectette), and TikTok (@architectette) Exclusive Content on our Newsletter: www.architectette.com Support the podcast on Patreon: https://patreon.com/Architectette?utm_medium=clipboard_copy&utm_source=copyLink&utm_campaign=creatorshare_creator&utm_content=join_link Music by AlexGrohl from Pixabay.

Host Aaron Witt introduced Justin Hoerner to co-host Alex Horton via email with the subject line “Young Buck @ a Start Up”. Of course, the wheels immediately began turning, knowing that if Aaron is pumped to have another young guy on the pod, his story is going to be pretty good. Folks, Justin did not disappoint. Justin Hoerner is an Assistant Project Manager (/precon manager/marketer/assistant super/recruiter/IT manager…) at Bruce Builders in Eldridge, IA, a small commercial GC that a co-worker started and Justin soon followed him to. Since the company is in the growth phase, Justin is seeing first-hand how to build the business and is already a well-rounded part of the Dirt World. He's also a young guy who readily admits he has a ton to learn, but is thankful for the multiple stops on his journey.  This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron and Justin discuss the risks and rewards of leaving a comfortable position to join a start-up company. Later, they dig in to why self-development is so important (ESPECIALLY when you're young), lessons already learned, and why some people still think it's controversial to move straight into a construction job after high school. Don't forget you can watch or listen to Dirt Talk on the BuildWitt app! You can learn more about it at buildwitt.com/buildwitt-app. To connect with other people who listen to this show, use and search for the hashtag #betterdirtworld and join in on the conversation.

Damen Shipyards Uses Matterport Digital Twins to Accelerate Workflow and Enhance the Customer Experience Global shipbuilding giant incorporates digital twins to improve connection between company designers and customers, improving approval workflow, construction precision, and customer satisfaction SUNNYVALE, California, Tuesday, March 22, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world, today announced that Damen Shipyards Group (“Damen”), a Dutch-owned shipbuilding company with operations in 120 countries and delivering 175 vessels annually, has adopted Matterport digital twins to facilitate remote collaboration for internal and external stakeholders. With access to Matterport's rich, dimensionally accurate data, Damen has applied an innovative approach to drive customer satisfaction. “When we discovered Matterport, we quickly realized the power of the digital twin to unlock collaboration and engagement with our designers and our customers,” said Jan-Jaap Eits, Assistant Project Manager at Damen Shipyards. “Today, we use Matterport to allow our customers to remotely review and inspect every compartment and detail of a vessel within a 3D space. Internally, our design and engineering teams have access to detailed measurements and layouts to further enable them to work more efficiently and avoid costly and time-consuming site visits.” Across its Workboat Division, including its major shipyards in China, Turkey and Vietnam, Damen uses Matterport Pro2 3D cameras to capture digital twins of its vessels. With access to a 3D space in the planning stage, customers can examine the layout and placement of equipment and request modifications if desired. Once a design is finalized, Damen shares its digital twin internally with their service department, enabling them to gain a better understanding of the vessel when it is completed and delivered. In addition, the Measurement Mode capability within a Matterport digital twin allows Damen's design and engineering personnel to verify measurements down to the centimeter, including room layouts and the placement of everything from windows and doors to hardware and equipment, all without conducting a site visit. --- Matterport media release continues in the We Get Around Network Forum (www.WGANForum.com) https://forum.we-get-around.com/topic/16586/page/1/damen-shipyards-uses-matterport-digital-twins-to-accelerate-workflow/

Engineering Success interviews Michelle Richardson a Senior Project Manager at Property Alliance Group. Having always known that she wanted to work in construction Michelle started out life wanting to be an Architect. Whilst studying for her BA(Hons) in Architecture she soon realised that she was much better placed for a career in Project Management having realised her organisational and communication skills were stronger than her creative design skills. Having completed her degree in Architecture she embarked on studying part-time for a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management after securing her first role as an Assistant Project Manager with a consultancy firm in Leeds. Over the past 18 years Michelle has worked for a number of large international consultancies firms including Arcadis, Mace and Deloitte in the Project Management teams. In addition to this Michelle has worked as an Operations Director for a small construction company and is now a Senior Project Manager with a large property developer in Manchester and is responsible for over £150m of construction works in and around Manchester. Having worked for client, contractor and consultancy, Michelle has an excellent understanding of the design and construction process throughout the lifecycle of a project and an acute understanding of how to interpret the client's needs. Michelle's leadership style is to work together in partnership, in open and honest relationships with a focus on developing the team. Her aim is to ensure that she delivers all projects on time, on or below budget with zero health and safety accidents or incidents in order to build successful trusted client relationships.

Nostalgia Interviews with Chris Deacy

Silvia Rasca was the first international student to be elected President of the Students’ Union at Canterbury Christ Church University and has recently joined the staff at the University of Kent where she is an Assistant Project Manager for the Integrated Student Frontline Services Project. In this fascinating interview, Silvia talks about her journey to Canterbury from Romania and the political turmoil in her native country in the late 1980s, when she was born, and the impact it had on her and her family in the years that followed. Silvia reflects on how she has applied the goals and values instilled in her by her family to her new home, where Silvia discusses the importance of challenging and pushing barriers. Silvia talks about keeping a diary and she explains why she tries not to have any regrets in life. Her grandparents are a particular inspiration for her, and Silvia tells us the secret of why her grandparents’ chickens had to be spoken to in Hungarian. Her father was a professional volleyball player and Silvia talks about how she used to accompany him to matches. We learn about the type of music that her parents disapproved of her listening to, and she confesses to once having taped over her father’s beloved Pink Floyd cassette tape with Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl’. Silvia talks about the role that production and scriptwriting played in her degree and why she enjoyed standing in front of a class as it exposed herself to vulnerable situations which enabled her to ‘rise to the occasion’. The interview concludes with some candid reflections on the role of activism in her native Romania and we learn whether Silvia is a looking back or a looking forward type of person. Please note: Opinions expressed are solely those of Chris Deacy and Silvia Rasca and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the University of Kent.

Since 2002, a major organization in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, has supported an archaeological dig on the former grounds of a house called “New Place.” New Place was one of the biggest houses in Stratford when Shakespeare was a boy. Once he became a wealthy and famous playwright, he bought it. When he wasn’t in London, he lived there with his family until his death, 19 years later, in 1616. The dig has revealed some tantalizing clues about how the Shakespeare family lived their lives – what they ate, how they cooked what they ate, and – as you’ll hear – how they worked and played. Kevin Colls is Archaeological Project Manager at the Centre of Archaeology at Staffordshire University in Stoke-on-Trent. Nic Fulcher of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust is the Assistant Project Manager at New Place. They were interviewed by Neva Grant. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series.
