Health care wasn't expected to be a major theme for this year's elections. But as President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump secured their respective party nominations this week, the future of both Medicare and the Affordable Care Act appears to be up for debate. Meanwhile, the cyberattack of the UnitedHealth Group subsidiary Change Healthcare continues to do damage to the companies' finances with no quick end in sight. Margot Sanger-Katz of The New York Times, Anna Edney of Bloomberg News, and Joanne Kenen of Johns Hopkins University and Politico Magazine join KFF Health News' Julie Rovner to discuss these issues and more. Also this week, Rovner interviews Kelly Henning of Bloomberg Philanthropies about a new, four-part documentary series on the history of public health, “The Invisible Shield.” Plus, for “extra credit” the panelists suggest health policy stories they read this week that they think you should read, too. Julie Rovner: The Washington Post's “Navy Demoted Ronny Jackson After Probe Into White House Behavior,” by Dan Diamond and Alex Horton.Joanne Kenen: The Atlantic's “Frigid Offices Might Be Killing Women's Productivity,” by Olga Khazan.Margot Sanger-Katz: Stat's “Rigid Rules at Methadone Clinics Are Jeopardizing Patients' Path to Recover From Opioid Addiction,” by Lev Facher.Anna Edney: Scientific American's “How Hospitals Are Going Green Under Biden's Climate Legislation,” by Ariel Wittenberg and E&E News. Two men lied about being veterans. The judge's sentence: Wear signs saying "I am a liar"", The Washington Post (27 de agosto de 2019).

On Washington Post Live's “First Look,” associate editor Jonathan Capehart speaks with The Post's Alex Horton, Hugh Hewitt and Ruth Marcus about leaked material regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, Jack Smith's probe of Donald Trump and the Texas abortion pill. Conversation recorded on Friday, April 14, 2023.
The photos of top-secret Pentagon documents first started appearing online on Discord, a chat platform popular with gamers. But where did they come from? And just how many military secrets do they contain? Read more:Last week, reports surfaced that a trove of classified documents was leaked on a number of social media platforms. The documents cover worldwide intelligence briefings, assessments of Ukraine's defense capabilities, and the highly classified methods the United States uses to collect information. But were these documents real? U.S. officials who spoke to The Washington Post said that some of the materials did not appear forged. Still, some documents appeared to be manipulated, including data from the Ukraine war that suggested Russian casualties were not as high as reported.Today on the show, national security reporter Alex Horton walks through the origin of the leaked documents, how the Justice Department is investigating these revelations, and what consequences these could have for the war in Ukraine, and the rest of the world.
In another installment of “Questions and Questionable Answers” with host Aaron Witt, Aaron and co-host Alex Horton review questions sent in by listeners. This time, the guys answer questions like “should everyone start on a shovel before becoming an operator?”, “where does manufacturing fit into the Dirt World?” and “is it valuable to go to college for construction management?” They also discuss Aaron's foolproof plan to track books he wants to read. It's uh... pretty simple. Thanks as always to our listeners and especially those who send in questions! Keep ‘em coming, friends. Last week, hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton laid out the plans for Aaron's trip to Germany with Chase Lyons, a Director/Videographer at BuildWitt. Those guys are now back stateside and they uh… got into some stuff over there. Aaron lays out their time at the bauma trade show, a construction and mining machinery trade fair held every three years in Munich. It's the largest tradeshow in the world, but the guys got to spend a lot of time meeting folks in the Dirt World and seeing some badass machines. Keep an eye out for the vlog on Aaron's YouTube channel. This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron shares his experiences in a MASSIVE underground salt mine, the joys of watching a crew work a marble quarry, and riding in an “elevator” on the end of a crane arm. — DirtWorld.com Let's build a BETTER DIRT WORLD Without the Dirt World, we wouldn't have food, clean water, electricity, roads, or shelter required for survival. Demand for the industry is growing, yet over 40% of our workforce will retire by 2031. We must add hundreds of thousands of people every year only to keep up... So let's fix that. What if society viewed our profession as noble? What if parents were proud when their kids declared they wanted to be in the Dirt World? What if a workforce shortage was no longer a worry? Now is the time for us all to work together to build a movement. We need to tell our industry's story, further care for and train our existing workforce, and create clear pathways for people to join and succeed in the Dirt World. It's all possible, but only together, and time is of the essence. Help us secure the future of the Dirt World. Veterans Day is a holiday meant to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is also a day that has historically served as a platform for those outside of the community to offer their thoughts on service – whether sincere or platitudinous. On this episode of Fire Watch, we speak to many veterans – ones with unique, distinguished or important backgrounds – and ask them their thoughts on the day, what phrases like “thank you for your service" means to them and why it may mean different things to different veterans. In this episode you'll hear from a Navy pilot and son of one of the most influential veterans of our lifetimes, a Silver Star recipient who fought in one of the most infamous and deadly battles of the Afghan War, a Vietnam veteran who has covered military issues for decades, an Iraq War veteran and proud immigrant who defended the Capitol against rioters on January 6th 2021, a founding leader for Black veteran voices and equity across the country, and a Marine who was relieved of command after she said she took a stand against gender bias in the Corps. Appearing in this episode: Drew Lawrence, Jonathan Hill, Kate Germano, Jack McCain, Aquilino Gonell, Alex Horton, Daniele Anderson, Rebecca Kheel and Richard Sisk. Interviews edited for time and clarity.
Hey Reservos! This week we welcome our very good friend Alex Horton to help us discuss the Larry Clark and Harmony Korine's Kids! Listen as we breakdown this incredibly authentic and genuine look at how teenagers are in the real world of New York in 1995. Enjoy!
This week begins a new phase on Dirt Talk: Each Monday, we'll be releasing episodes with new formats, new guests, and new stories! This week on Dirt Talk, the OG Dirt Talk crew (Aaron Witt and Alex Horton) is here with a Q+A. The guys chat about “hidden gem” locations in the Dirt World, book recommendations for young people in the industry, and “chasing the dozer dream”. They also discuss the right time to specialize equipment, keeping morale up on a long slog of a job, and Aaron's “insistence” (read: demand) to always drive on road trips. Stay Dirty!
This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron Witt and Alex Horton are joined by Dirt World “Expert” Eric Jumper. Eric complains about not getting paid after working at BuildWitt for two years (editor's note: this is not true) before the guys address internet trolls who complain that every video Aaron posts doesn't show every step of every process, people putting RAM-NEK in the back of an excavator to warm it up in the cold months, and the time Eric brought 10 feet of sewer pipe into the BuildWitt office. Later, they answer questions about how Aaron should be approached in public, now that he's famous (editor's note: he absolutely hated this question), and how, after the People Problem, material shortages might be the Dirt World's next colossal problem. Stay Dirty!
This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron Witt and Alex Horton are back at it, catching up after another long stretch of travel for Aaron. The guys discuss the Appalachian Trail and the “time warp” of living on the road before diving into this week's topic: Interns. They discuss the value of skipping the unpaid internship and just getting out in the field and working. Then, they answer a question about the value of outward-facing branding and why it works for some companies to paint all of their equipment. Stay Dirty!
This week, we've got a special edition of Dirt Talk: host Aaron Witt and producer Alex Horton are joined by BuildWitt Co-President Dan Briscoe to discuss what's been going on lately on the business side of BuildWitt. Suppose you've been following along with the BuildWitt story for the last few months. In that case, you know that we've been working on rolling out BuildWitt Training, a software platform built for the Dirt World to address the “people problem”: how can our industry better attract, train, and retain our people? BuildWitt Training was built to make training content easily accessible and easily digestible. We've been building the software AND the content and partnering with industry experts to ensure the training content is valuable and first-class. Aaron and Dan discuss why it made sense to go this route as a business and why it's becoming a rallying cry throughout the industry to get other folks to step up to the plate and double down on training their people. There's a lot of good information here, whether you've been following BuildWitt for years OR you're new to the BuildWitt story and are just learning about everything the BuildWitt crew is working on. Remember that you can watch/listen to episodes on the BuildWitt app and on our Dirt Talk YouTube Channel. Stay Dirty!
Host Aaron Witt introduced Justin Hoerner to co-host Alex Horton via email with the subject line “Young Buck @ a Start Up”. Of course, the wheels immediately began turning, knowing that if Aaron is pumped to have another young guy on the pod, his story is going to be pretty good. Folks, Justin did not disappoint. Justin Hoerner is an Assistant Project Manager (/precon manager/marketer/assistant super/recruiter/IT manager…) at Bruce Builders in Eldridge, IA, a small commercial GC that a co-worker started and Justin soon followed him to. Since the company is in the growth phase, Justin is seeing first-hand how to build the business and is already a well-rounded part of the Dirt World. He's also a young guy who readily admits he has a ton to learn, but is thankful for the multiple stops on his journey. This week on Dirt Talk, Aaron and Justin discuss the risks and rewards of leaving a comfortable position to join a start-up company. Later, they dig in to why self-development is so important (ESPECIALLY when you're young), lessons already learned, and why some people still think it's controversial to move straight into a construction job after high school. So there are a lot of fancy restaurants here in Nashville, the home to BuildWitt. But would you ever catch your podcast hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton in one? That's how this episode starts, but there's plenty more to talk about this week, too, like: *When developing, the workforce can feel at odds with the traditional tough-guy persona of the Dirt World. *Why that persona isn't doing us any favors. *How the construction industry should pump up how we invest in our workforce. *What kinds of companies make up the Dirt World anyway. Plus, Aaron and Alex tackle the age-old question of how small business owners can best navigate that first hire. What's next? Today on Post Reports, the GOP candidates spreading the so-called “big lie,” and how the Jan. 6 committee hopes to educate Americans about what really happened. Plus, the United States has sent weapons to Ukraine — but now the troops need tech support. Read more:J.R. Majewski marched to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and tweeted a photo with the caption: “It's going down on 1/6.” Last month, he won the Republican nomination in an Ohio congressional district along Lake Erie.A Washington Post analysis found that across the country, more than 100 GOP primary winners back Trump's false election claims. As many Americans are tuning in to watch the Jan. 6 committee hearings on Capitol Hill this week, where even the people closest to Trump are testifying that they tried to warn him his election fraud claims were false, The Post's Amy Gardner reports that it's almost become a prerequisite in GOP primaries to embrace Trump's election denialism. Also on the show: The U.S. has sent powerful antitank weapons, called Javelins, to Ukrainian troops on the front lines. But, as Alex Horton reports, the customer service on these weapons leaves something to be desired.

Eric Jumper is like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get. One thing that's true, however, is that it will be entertaining and educational. Though he's only 26, he's been working in the Dirt World for almost 10 years, and literally grew up in the dirt. As a 3rd generation dirt mover, having a deep love and insatiable curiosity for the Dirt World is in Eric's blood. And as a team member at BuildWitt for the last year, he's been all over the country meeting up with and learning from the folks that are literally building our country. In this week's episode, host Aaron Witt and producer Alex Horton are joined by Eric Jumper, a "Connoisseur of heavy equipment-related matters" here at BuildWitt. On Eric's second Dirt Talk episode, the guys talk equipment (of course), but they sprinkle in plenty of other topics. They dig into why Eric covered the floor of a machine with astroturf, why it was so cool to shoot photos of a machine that he used to operate at an old job, and how he recognizes more and more these days that his upbringing in the Dirt World is pretty unique. To check out Eric's equipment journey, follow him on IG at @eric_jumper. Don't forget you can watch or listen to Dirt Talk on the BuildWitt app! Anna Johnson is the founder and owner of AQUIP, "the first and only known independently female-owned vacuum truck and environmental products dealership in the United States." In the last few years, she's been burning up the interstates in the Southeast US, building her business from the ground up. Anna was kind enough to swing through Nashville and be a guest on Dirt Talk. In this week's episode, host Aaron Witt and co-host Alex Horton chat with Anna about how she got into the Dirt World, what exactly a vacuum truck is (and why she finds them fascinating), and what can be different or challenging about being a woman in the Dirt World. Super fun conversation until Aaron really had to pee. To connect with other people who listen to this show, use and search for the hashtag #betterdirtworld and join in on the conversation. Alex Horton of The Washington Post shares the details.
The military could lose 10s of thousands of active duty members because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The Washington Post's Alex Horton sat down with Inside Sources about what is going on, why the top brass wants a mandate, and what other problems the military may have to deal with if they lose that many people. Boyd also discusses the principle of why hyper focusing on one problem can blind you to others. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week on the Monday edition of Dirt Talk, hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton talk about the upcoming BuildWitt company meeting in Nashville and equipment training. Dan MacArthur is the COO of Berg Construction, an excavation/site work contractor based in Morgantown, PA. They have five specialized divisions, and Dan has had his hand in all of them over the years: commercial, waste management, residential/special projects, paving/concrete, and golf courses. Dan was kind enough to hop on a call with the DT guys and talk dirt and a whole mess of other things. This week, host Aaron Witt (with co-host Alex Horton) chatted with Dan about why Berg still does small residential projects, why the leadership team at Berg works so well together, and the importance of being direct. Check out Berg's website at bergconst.com or follow along on IG @bergconst. Check out Aaron's episode with Ford Berg here. Bryan Peters has spent his entire career around heavy equipment, so when he decided to start his company AdvanceTrac Equipment, he knew that even though he wanted to get into helping companies optimize their heavy iron fleets, he knew he'd want to do things differently. Though he admitted that he has "audacious goals" for where he wants to go, he's also fully present in the current grind of building a business. Bryan made a pit stop in Nashville on his way to Indiana to pick up a trailer (a good example of the nature of the equipment market) and was gracious enough to sit down with Dirt Talk hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton. The guys talked all kinds of iron, the Dirt World "scene" in Texas, and why the internet is more important than ever for EVERY industry. On this week's episode of Dirt Talk, the DT guys keep it in the BuildWitt family: our guest is none other than BuildWitt Creative President Laurie SantaLucia. This week, hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton chat with Laurie about the kinds of learning and understanding it takes to work in the Dirt World, why it's important to be transparent and open with the people that we work with in the Dirt World before we expect them to be open with us, and what she's learned so far that is just effin' cool. It's always fun to have the experts on Dirt Talk - not only do co-hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton learn about the guest, they learn an extraordinary amount in general. And on episode 90 of Dirt Talk, the guys definitely learn tons from Johnathan More. Johnathan is the Chairperson & CEO of Starr Peak Mining Ltd, a Canadian-based company focused on exploratory mining and land acquisition. Johnathan also now lives in Aaron's hometown (Scottsdale, AZ) and sends one of his kids to Aaron's old school. Aaron and Johnathan get into the nitty-gritty of acquiring land in order to start drilling, why there are so many mining companies in Canada, and what the land development process looks like to start a mine. Thanks to Johnathan More and Starr Peak Mining Ltd! To connect with other people who listen to this show, use and search for the hashtag #betterdirtworld and join in on the conversation. Dirt Talk had our very first guest in the Dirt Talk Studios this week, which is very exciting. He's also arguably our youngest guest to date. This week, our guest is Dylan Taylor, a 20-year-old laborer and construction management student from MN. Dylan is a pretty special guy for a lot of reasons: he's already worked 2 summers as a laborer for Duininck Inc., he just started a 2-year college program for construction management, and he's traveled and meet with people all over the industry to make connections and learn from those more experienced than him. In episode 87 of Dirt Talk, hosts Aaron Witt and Alex Horton have a conversation with Dylan about what it's like to get into the industry at a young age, important advice he's already received, using doubt from others as fuel for your own internal fire, and how he's figuring out how to run equipment with only one hand. To follow along with his story, you can follow him on IG @1armedtrades or on LinkedIn. This week in Congress, top military officials are testifying on what went wrong in the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan. Will anyone in the government be held accountable? Read more:Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and U.S. Central Command chief Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie are on Capitol Hill testifying in front of the Senate and House Armed Services committees on the fall of Kabul and the disastrous U.S. exit from Afghanistan. As lawmakers press for answers, Alex Horton reports on whether this hearing will result in accountability for the years of government missteps in handling the end of America's longest war.
We've finally tracked down the person who was around for the very very beginnings of BuildWitt (other than Aaron Witt)... introducing Mr. Kevin McCawley, who used to ride around the American Southwest and take photos with Aaron as they would shoot photos of any job site they could find. Now, Kevin is a med school student at the University of Michigan, but he was kind enough to sit down and help tell some behind-the-scenes stories of the birth of "BuildWitt" as we know it. Co-host Alex Horton joins Aaron and Kevin to recount the winding road of how "BuildWitt" as a brand came to be. Whether you've been following the BuildWitt story for years now or this is your first introduction, this episode is chock full of never-before-shared stories of the early wins and failures. Aaron also tells the story of how Kevin got roasted on social media for posing for a photo in front of some heavy machinery with Sperry's Boat Shoes. This week, we are launching our podcast review contest! For the entire month of September, we'll be doing a drawing of all submissions each week to win $100 to the BuildWitt store, but we will send a discount code out to each person that submits a review. To submit for the drawing(s): Please leave a review for Dirt Talk on Apple Podcasts Screenshot your submitted review and email it to DirtTalk@BuildWitt.com Look forward to hearing from our Dirt World (and Dirt World loving) folks. According to the Urban Institute, the median wealth for a White family is $171,000. For a Black family, it’s $17,000. That’s a ten-fold difference in median wealth. As we know, home ownership is a key driver to building wealth. It’s part of the American dream. Recent data suggests that White families are almost 25% more likely to own a home than Black and Hispanic families. Economic Inequality is a really broad topic with a number historical factors, including colonization, slavery, redlining and tax policy. This episode focuses on two primary drivers of wealth: homeownership and entrepreneurship. Dr. Frank catches up with Carlos Contreras from Homewise, Alex Horton from International District Economic Development, and Queneesha Myers from Q’s Cakes and Sweets Boutique to talk discuss these important issues and how each of them is building a path towards economic justice.

This week, Bombshell bids farewell to summer with our final distributed ops episode, closing out what has been a nice, quiet August (ha. ha). Afghanistan is, as usual, still a thing, but this time President Trump - or his teleprompter - actually gave us some thoughts on the matter. We lament waking up to a nuclear test in North Korea and the latest chapters in the Kenyan election and China-India border disputes, and drill down on how everything became about readiness and readiness became about everything: the Seventh Fleet, the Army, DACA, you name it. Finally, we give our take on John Kelly's efforts at discipline in the West Wing and the continuing parade of White House departures, as well as views on Back to School reading and "book dates" with your partner. Readings: "Why India did not Win the Standoff with China," M. Taylor Fravel, War on the Rocks "Welcome to the H-Bomb Club, North Korea," Ankit Panda and Vipin Narang, War on the Rocks "Xi says BRICS nations should stand up against protectionism," Lousie Watt, AP "Deadly Navy accidents in the Pacific raise questions over a force stretched too thin," Alex Horton and Thomas Gibbons-Neff, Washington Post "How the U.S. Navy's Fleet has been on a collision course for years," by David Larter, Defense News "U.S. Army Unprepared to Deal with Russia in Europe," Wesley Morgan, Politico "Analysis: Could Trump’s Transgender Military Ban Actually Become Policy?"
