Originally a graffiti writer, Eine started his career over 30 years ago, leaving his first tag all over London before developing his distinct typographic style. This week, Ben returns to the podcast to talk about everything from the state of the world today, the importance of body art, and the true power of graffiti and its transformative power. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lockdowns have helped and assisted in containing COVID, but they have come at the cost of our mental health in many ways. We are facing the prospect of a new pandemic, one of mental health issues. Graffiti is about writing your name on the side of an object, and making that name burn into the souls of all who see it. Inspiration comes from many sources, from travel to conversation. We never know when the spark of inspiration will arrive - sometimes it comes from the smallest interaction. There is an intense beauty in the mistaken. Mistakes are how any artform comes to evolve and become something transcendent. Ben Eine is one of the most successful street artists in the world and is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of graffiti letterforms. Originally a graffiti writer, Eine started his career over 30 years ago, leaving his first tag all over London before developing his distinct typographic style. Steven talks to Ben about the home of street art, and how it should be used as a tool to revitalise communities, how all street art is the art of "getting over", and why your passion should always be your driving force. KEY TAKEAWAYS Street art has the power to enliven a place, and empower communities. It should be used as a way of revitalising a place that needs colour. If you have passion, belief and self-motivation, then money and renown isn't that important in our quest to create. The governing bodies who control society are doing a bad job of inspiring and caring for us all. It is up to us to inject positivity and beauty into the world. Discipline gives us a sense of self-worth. Pursuits such as sport and art grant us ways to focus and connect with others, inspiring us to work harder on being the best versions of ourselves. BEST MOMENTS 'I believe that street art should be in poorer communities - where they need an injection of colour' 'Graffiti and street art is about the art of getting over. Brick Lane, in the heart of the East End of London, is often considered one of the most famous locations in the UK for graffiti and street art. Whilst international street artists aspire to paint on Brick Lane, it is kept fresh by local artists who change the graffiti on a weekly basis. Works can be found by famous street artists from around the world, including Phlegm, Ben Eine, Banksy, Noriaki, C215, ROA, Vhils and Shepard Fairey, to name just a few. One of the most popular works of street art in the area is that of ‘A Couple Hold Hands in the Street' on Princelet Street by local artist Stik. The piece, created in 2010, shows a woman in a niqab holding hands with a second stick figure and was voted the nation's 17th favourite artwork in a poll in 2017. One of the other long-standing pieces in the area is The Crane on Hanbury street which was created by Belgian street artist, ROA. The work was originally intended to be a heron but was changed to a crane after ROA learnt that they were sacred to the Bengali community, who make up a significant portion of the local population.

Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel, found underneath the platforms and tracks of Waterloo Station, is London's largest legal graffiti wall at 300-metres in length. The site gained fame after famed British street artist, Banksy, held a street art festival called Cans Festival (a play on The Cannes Film Festival) in the tunnel. Banksy had recognised the potential of the tunnel which had formerly been used as an access road for taxis to pick up passengers from the Eurostar. From the 3rd-5th May 2008, forty street artists from around the world - including Blek le Rat, Ben Eine, Sten & Lex and Vexta - transformed the grimy tunnel into a street art haven. Graffiti and street art are legally permitted in the tunnel meaning that artists can create works without fear of getting arrested by police. This ever-changing gallery now attracts street art tourists and graffiti enthusiasts from around the world and   arches adjacent to the tunnel were recently transformed into bars and restaurants. The site was even home to a temporary cinema, The Lambeth Palace, to celebrate the release of Banksy's documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop in 2010.

Tara Austin is a strategist and was recently the Chief Strategy Officer for Kindred in London. Many of us know her for her public speaking events, like her presentation at Nudgestock in June 2020, and the amazing work she did with Rory Sutherland, Sam Tatam, and Jez Groom at Ogilvy over many years. We discussed a project she did with Ogilvy Change referred to as the Babies in the Borough. On the heels of the London riots in 2011, Tara wanted to see how a paper she’d read a few years earlier might apply to reduce crime in England. With the help of a master street painter, Ben Eine, the team gathered photos of babies from locals in the neighborhood and had them rendered on the security doors of businesses. After the babies’ faces were added to the shop shutters, the city saw declines in theft, vandalism and public urination year-over-year. We also talked about Edward de Bono, his development of lateral thinking and the six thinking hats. De Bono’s work can help us improve our decision making, which is likely to lead to greater happiness in our lives, and that’s always a win. In this episode of Man Talk, I meet with Ben Eine (@einesigns) in Shoreditch, London. Ben is one of the most successful street artists in the world and is regarded as a pioneer in the exploration of graffiti letterforms. His distinctive letters spell words and phrases across walls from London to LA, Florence to Tokyo as he continues to use street art to engage the public. Our chat was actually in a pub as he took a break from finishing his piece on Old Street that spells ‘Stop Knife Crime'. We talk about his struggles with his mental health, which he openly admits are elevated by drugs and alcohol and go back to his teenage years. We discuss his coping mechanisms and counselling, and delve into the incredible work he does with charities. Using his art, he's helped multiple charities such as Movember and Shelter. This episode is sponsored by Mahabis, who produce footwear for time well spent. Underpinning their brand ethos is the core idea of ‘me time' and the importance of self-care, all of which plays a key part in fostering and maintaining a healthy and positive sense of wellbeing. A discount code is available in the show (for T&Cs visit mahabis.com/pages/terms-conditions). The show is produced in support of the Movember Foundation, a high-profile charity who are changing the face of men's health on a global scale and who fund life-changing mental health projects around the world.

This week, well another honour.. this guy’s throw up was in my manor of Kilburn and Edgeware Rd ever since I could read graffiti, and that was from young.. And when I started writing in 95 the, from what I thought was an SM throw up was amazing, unique, one-line greatness executed the same every time I studied it.. Knowing it had been in my vision since the 80’s, but you don’t really study then, its later on when you yourself paint, I knew to look at these tags / throws and really see the excellence and mastery of a tool and form of hieroglyph. It was that and Up’s throw ups that I really loved as a kid.. and did so for many years.. It was only in the mid two thousand I found out the SM throw up was Eine! It wasn’t an S with a M on top, it was Eine’s… I first met him outside Petros Paint Store in Brighton in 2000-2001 he put up a sticker with EINE in block letters repeated at 45 degrees, black on pink. I knew of him as a train painter, killer full colour wholecars.. I was obviously chuffed to meet him, but I wonder how much I would have geeked out had I known he was the throw up also. Watching what Eine did in the following years was crazy.. I think we all thought that. His transition into Art, street art wasn’t even a term then, doing things that we hadn’t seen done before, a name associated and placed in rooms and galleries that London writers hadn’t reached yet.. We get to hear about all of that, Ben brings us back to London in the 80’s and tells us about his early years and meeting like-minded others.. We talk about traveling, clubbing, train parties, painting and the beginning of his road into alphabet paintings on shutters, meeting Banksy and starting Pictures on Walls and everything that came after it, from learning to print on the job to having a painting given to President Obama.. Another great chat.. what a lucky guy I am… I visited Ben at his studio in South London and we talked whilst he painted a canvas.. it was dope.. I recorded it for you as always.. Go check him out at @einesigns on Instagram whilst you listen.. Enjoy.

Was machst du und womit verdienst du dein Geld? Will: Genau. Will: Genau.
